Absolutely loved this movie. One of my all time favorites, and definitely one of the most underrated horror films of modern time. The sequel not so much, it had script issues I think. This one affected me emotionally like a movie should. Now as a film student and studying this making of video, I can see just how much work went into doing it all. A lot to live up to. The movie turns 15 today! My first introduction to Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Alice Kriege, and Jodelle Ferland. Truly one of my favorite video game adaptations despite so many changes they made. The visuals are absolutely amazing nailing down the atmosphere of the haunted town, they get the camera angles, the gore is plentiful. They used a lot of the music from the games by Akira Yamouka. Director Christopher Gans manages to bring the style and appearance to life. Plus there is the feeling of isolation and dread. Although it does suffer from inane dialogue, silly plotting, and the essence of the source material is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Sean Bean's scenes are so jarring and slow things down they could've been cut out completely. At its core though it is a story about maternal love and adoption trauma. The movie cremates the conventional adoption narrative in cinema, drawing the nightmarescape of not only forming a bond with an adopted child, but sustaining it, and what that attempt to sustain it says about the adoptive parent. Mother is god in the eyes of a child but adoptees know religion is an opiate or a way to treat emotional pain.
It makes me so fucking sad that there was no true sequel to this masterpiece of a film. This is the BEST VIDEOGAME ADAPTATION FILM EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. The special effects were so visceral and perfect. The music was perfect. The set design was perfect. The atmosphere was straight out of the game. These people look exteremely fun to work with! And kudo's to the project managers and directors for being absolutely respectful towards the actors, but also the people behind the scenes who made this all possible. It makes me love this movie even more!
Yeah, you could tell the people behind the first film really cared about the source material and did their damnedest to be as spiritually faithful to it as possible while trying to its own thing too. If only all video game adaptations had such people behind them rather than studios who only care about throwing them out just to make money off the name like Revelations did.
@@HalfDemonInuyasha yeah they cared so much that they changed the protagonist, the fact that dahlia was the one that burned and wanted to use her daughter to bring a demon to the town. beside that (and more) bang up job!

This is what we want in horror films, terrifying slow moving monsters and a nightmare ambience, not the boring jumpscares and speed chases or action shooting gun from most of the recent films, even the recent horror games
That is dedication and care for film. You can feel that the movie was made with heart. Sure, there are certain inconsistencies with the movie and the game, but for me, an old Silent Hill fan, I really enjoyed the movie, visually stunning and intriguing.
I liked the "extra" that the mother searched Cheryl and Harry followed the trail in the "nomral World". With this style is the diffrent between hell and normal world more sensible than in the first SH.
I can really agree on Dahlia. In game she is two faced and transforms from guide/ally character of a bit demented old woman, to evil schemer. The only thing they did in the movie was to make her ruse not be ruse, and they've extracted her evil part into Christabella who was even more one dimension than in game Dahlia.
I think the best description is that scene of the little girl screaming silent hill while trying to pretend to sleep. She tried to act, tried to create a scary moment but just left everyone rolling their eyes, kinda chuckling and slow clapping while saying ok, I guess, good job..

it's funny how they are talking about "THE GAME" but the "red pyramid thing", the "nurses" and the "lying figure/armless guy" aren't in the first game but in the second one.
Yup. They kinda vaguely used the story of the first game coupled with the symbolism of the second game, which makes absolutely no sense at all! Btw, there ARE nurses at the hospital in the first game but they used James' nurses instead..
well, its not really a movie to the gae but rather a movie inspire by the game. Like a homage to the games in general. Also they had to appeal to the 'mainstream audience' as well, which is quite logical. I personally like this movie because of all the costumes they made!
I considered it an alternate universe cannon, where all the individual nightmarish constructs of Silent Hill through its dreamers have merged into one, collective hellscape :)
As for Red Pyramid, I consider him an avatar of Punishment projected into Silent Hill from the cop dude (sherrif? don't remember). I suspect he's fully aware of the plight of the damned souls, he did suggest many times they deserved what they got (he's not wrong lol) and he tried to conceal it from Sean Bean, so it makes sense he would manifest a monster as the mantle of his judgement
I legit thought alot of those things were CGI. Armless Man for instance, Grey Child, etc. Just found this out years later and now at 2am at night this just made my day.
I've read that Radha Mitchell and Christophe Gans did not have a nice relationship during filming, more like a love-hate relationship instead. He in fact was annoyed by Radha's acting methods and overall performance because she did not emerge well in the character and had to re-take too many scenes unlike other actors in the movie. She also initially rejected to be part of the movie but later accepted due to her previous film Miranda & Miranda doing poorly. Just spilling some tea and trivia.
It had to been about 2000 when I first was introduced to silent hill. I would cover my eyes any time my uncle played it on the playstation because I was scared. I had to be about 5 years old then. The first movie adaptation is a horror film classic.
Practical effects, a passion for the series among the producers and actors alike, beautiful. Generally not the greatest movie, but I still love it. The second movie, however, makes me want to gauge my eyes out and die.
1:48 I must say he had it rough. I bet who ever did his acting as that fugly armless monster must off gone through makeup for a very long time, and it must freaking hot in that outfit. Hope it only took a few tries for whoever played as him
They changed many things but it still delivered the feeling of Silent Hill, especially with the music. Best video game adaptation imo. The second movie was so bad that I almost left the cinema (others really did leave btw). You could tell that they had no idea what Silent Hill is about. It’s just a soulless and trashy slasher movie with boring characters and a stupid plot...
Couldnt they make Resident Evil movies with the same creepy atmosphere that Silent Hill movie had? Instead they had to make it another Hollywood action movie.
*Silent Hill* series offers still the best monster design for horror themed games and it works so well for the movie, too. i highly recomment _Silent HIll 3 Making of_ as well.
Haven’t seen it but watched some pyramid head scenes and pretty freaked out so thought I’d watch behind the scenes. Makes it a little less scary. Such talented people.
I love this film and I've watched it many, many times. It's an incredible feat how they made it and these behind the scenes are very cool. I only have one gripe and it would be Gans' reasoning behind switching out Harry for Rose. His reasons for how it could never work with the Harry character because a film is different from a game and that they absolutely had to rewrite this character for the screen is just plain old silly. But it doesn't take away from the fact that I love this film and it's one of my favorites of all time.
The fact that the monsters weren't CGI makes it even more terrifying
Exactly!

*Silent Hill* series offers still the best monster design for horror themed games and it works so well for the movie, too.
i highly recomment _Silent HIll 3 Making of_ as well.
Filmed just out of my hometown Toronto haha awesome I still live in the city great growing up here 😂
Haven’t seen it but watched some pyramid head scenes and pretty freaked out so thought I’d watch behind the scenes.
Very underated movie game adaptation. The critics know nothing
