This channel along with Isamu rats are by far the most helpful and practical free resources I’ve ever come across for rat care. Most of the others just repeat the same common knowledge. I love that she shares her experiences freely so that other peoples’ rats can have a better life.

Aw thanks! That's such a kind compliment. I try really hard to share more than the basics. 🥰

Do you have any tips for bonding with rats who aren’t particularly food-motivated? I have one pink eyed white Rex who isn’t especially skittish but I just can’t bribe him with treats like the others.

Some rats are like that. I've found my rats definitely have preferences and for the less food motivated baby food(meat flavored is a fav usually) on a spoon can often Work.
Deep ding on how long you have had them, I just grab them and handle. I usually only give a day or two to settle in. Then just handle like my resident rats.
Peaches isn't fond of handling but he will tolerate it for health checks, and to go to and from the playpen or a carrier or nebulizer.
He however does love cheerios so that helps
I've found that he really likes learning tricks and is quite smart so I do periodically do tricks with him

I love your set-ups and enrichments :) However (and if this is jut what it looks like on camera, feel free to correct me) the cages seem a bit small and quite low. Just because your rats are able to climb the platforms in the back doesn't mean that their needs in this department are met.

The cage is a bit shorter than some other cages but its large enough i can fit my whole self into it and definitely meets thier needs.
I choose to follow science as that has evidence to back itself up, where opinion is often based on what humans think our pets want. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's harmful. And those opinions change often. because pet standards change which every fad, and often do not take into account what rats actually need or what is species appropriate.
Rats are a ground dwelling animal. They naturally live in burrows in the ground. They are not arboreal like squirrels. But we see a huge push to move them to a nearly arboreal setup with tons if height and branches and mostly climbing within the pet community.
      However that isnt species appropriate.
I meet in the middle. Theres always platforms and toys or ropes to balance and climb on, but the shorter height is much safer for an animal whose climbing in the wild would be to grab eggs from bird nests in lower bushes, or through brush piles, and also cant see well or balance well enough to be safe very high up.
Some people may have the opinion that is too small. But that's all of is. Opinion. According to studies it is more than double the recommended floor space.
And more than tall enough they can climb on things.
They always have deep bedding to dig in, multiple chew and foraging toys, various sleeping options from baskets, hammocks, hides and sometimes more than one of any of these if not all of them, things to climb on, and plenty of floor space to run around on, forage and wrestle in, nesting material to manipulate, and other rats to play with.
This fully meets their needs and mine. 🥰
