I totally agree, Amazon needs to be more upfront with costs and this is another example of Amazon starting a program that's not flushed out. It makes the technician look bad like he's trying to scam customers when its Amazon that's giving false promises.
@EramSemperRecta it's good in some ways, but a unrealistic pipe dream in many others. There's no unfettered purist economic system that works today. Staying within the strict outlines of ideologies made decades and centuries ago is a recipe for failure in a modern world that couldn't have been imagined by the progenitors of the ideologies.
RyanTheReptile it still gets the point across. The fact you see it as an equivalent to a common favor as most people would for their friends, shows how easy it is and why it’s overpriced.

@@H0DLTHED0R I may not know the guy 100%, but given the nature of how the video was contructed, and how the video maker actually told us that he said (which yes I know is secondhand info, so not as reliable), we can conclude he is a good guy working for a crappy company. I see that ALL OVER in my real life, so why can't that be accurate for this video too? Sure, we don't KNOW, since a lot of the info was given by the video maker, but it's a VERY reasonable video and info. So, if the video maker was lying, he made it a VERY believable lie.
The guy did not work FOR Amazon. He worked for a 3rd party contractor who Amazon used to do the installs. The 3rd party company would get only a portion of that $81 - Amazon would get a piece of the $81 too. Factor in drive times and high cost of living and doing business in the Los Angeles area and the charge does not seem so unreasonable. How much is a professionals time worth? As a reference an auto mechanic charges $80 - $100 dollars an hour for labor. It seems from the video that the technician knew his job and that has value. All of that makes me think $200 was not so far out of line. The problem only lay in that Amazon advertised the price as $81.

"this motherboard already shipped with the BIOS required to run our Zen2 processor" That's the whole point of the MAX series @Bitwit. MSI themselves even state this in their marketing.....
Well, technically, no. Not the whole point, anyway. The primary reason for the MAX version is to include a bigger BIOS, that'll be able to support future BIOS updates. Not strictly for Zen2 out of the box compatibility. As the BIOS in the original board was lacking and MSI doubted whether it'd be able to support these upcoming updates.
Ram would be cheap to install bc it literally takes minutes but swapping motherboards is for all intents and purposes rebuilding the entire computer which takes 2 hours or more.

Like, understand the customers situation, figure out what's wrong, if there's an issue where giving a credit is the only thing you're capable of doing, then do so with XYZ dollar limit to the account. If you feel you need to do more, speak with your supervisor to have them authorize a larger credit. etc. I don't remember the exact wording, or how it works for what is most definitely an out-of-US call center he contacted. They estimate higher, because the techs know they run into issues like this. Cpu being compatible or not, needing a bios update... In your case it wasn't needed. The cable management, installing everything back in, dealing with your liquid cooling system.. other issues that may occur due to a fault in your other components that he wouldn't have been able to know about.. just a quick startup at the beginning isn't enough.. then a good tech after finishing everything, would do a thorough test to make sure everything runs good. I have built systems for people, drive to them.. waste gas and time, get there to find out that the RAM is faulty, or the power supply is dead, even from brand new. They factor all of this stuff into the price and THEN they deduct if it ends up being easier (like this tech did)

Yes, Amazon is trying to scam these local PC technicians. This tech spent 2 hours at Bitwit's house installing a motherboard and Amazon expected it to cost about $40 per hour. A professional company generally charges between $80-150 per hour on site depending on the local market. The $220 for 2 hours work is right on point with market rates.
Seems over charging is rampant in any niche repair industry. Like car mechanics, charge ya $200 to do brakes when they are only like $30 to buy and barely an hour of work.

I went on amazon and looked at a few motherboards and it looks like they don't offer that service anymore. Maybe it's only available in certain areas but I didn't see it on my end.
I used to be self-employed and would subcontract to fill my schedule, so I have a bit of insight on how this works. Typically when someone orders something with the expert installation option, the vendor will then go to a platform, like WorkMarket, and post the job for a flat fee for like half of what they charge to the consumer. It beats them having to hire on their own workforce in 60 different locations across the USA alone just to have good coverage. Even though I was subcontracting before Amazon offered that option for PC parts, I occasionally saw and took jobs from Staples or Best Buy because they do the same practice for their onsite guarantees for virus removals. Anyway, this is why it's a mixed bag, because if you got someone like me who was just using the platform to fill my schedule, then you were pretty lucky, because I do know quite a bit about computers. But there were some techs on the platform that would take any job they could as they were just starting out in the PC repair business, some having no experience or formal education. Rarely did you get well experienced techs through services like that, and even in my case I cherry picked jobs that I wanted A LOT, and left the cheap and undesirable ones especially if they were far away. One job in particular, I did a printer install for a local Dollar General (the "nationwide" tech company they contract through also posts jobs on WorkMarket and similar platforms). Even though it was a cheap job, I did it because it was literally half a mile from another job I had scheduled that day. I showed up and the manager was frantic because apparently they sent two other techs and neither of them could figure out. One little look and I could see that they hadn't even connected the cable (this was before Wifi printers were a thing). I connected the cable and the integrated POS system they used automatically detected it and set it up. So, yes, I got paid something like $30 to simply plug in a printer cable, because two other techs on the platform were too incompetent to figure it out.
I think the max for this case is 50 but I dont think you could get mad at them because they could get in trouble and anymore would have to be done by higher ups and not customer/home services

WTH. No kidding, at that price, at least he must know to build a fkn gaming PC perfectly!
Well, technically, no. Not the whole point, anyway. The primary reason for the MAX version is to include a bigger BIOS, that'll be able to support future BIOS updates. @@maverikk521 yeah, i mean i will say, as a former amazon CSA, he did the best he could, giving the return credit back. Putting the money back in Kyle's bank isn't something that (at least from my experience, i know Home Services, can have separate policies and capabilities) they are able to do, at least in the entry level capacity. But, on the subject of that training you mention, there are specific policies in place in order. But, the policies are still all the same company wide in those regards.
I know in the basic CSA department I was with that XYZ dollar limit was only like $10 or something low, and my manager was only capable of authorizing up to like the $50 or something like that after voicing my opinion and giving valid reasoning. As well as that reasoning and authorization all being marked and recirded on the customers account for when, why, and by whom, that credit, refund, replacment, etc was issued.
not sure how much I can really share, it was years back i worked with them, and I'm also not sure what i am probably still under NDA about even after leaving, but that's the best i can do... at least to speak on behalf of the side of Customer Service, not the technician himself. Who, are techincally they themselves 3rd party, independent contractors hired under Amazon, to give one more level of seperation of responsibility on their actions or whatever in relation to Amazon as the contractor to contractee relationship. They factor all of this stuff into the price and THEN they deduct if it ends up being easier (like this tech did)
Please, PLEASE do one of these expert installations for just the RAM I'm so curious...

@@BaQu82 Some peoples time is worth more than others, the time of one who installs TV stands isn't quite as valuable.
@@alwaysabiggerfish9564 his cost of living is still the same
@@BaQu82 Exactly. It's most likely a flat rate depending on the type of installation. Yeah, we can all argue all we want about whether or not the installation is overpriced or not, but it doesn't matter if the TV stand was $20 or $100. The quality and/or value of that stand doesn't change the nature of the job.
@@bon3d3th The time and effort to drive around installing and in worst cases waiting for jobs to appear is costly. There is a threshold you cant go under in services where you show up. You know what is more outrageous than the actual technician, forget his experience for a moment? It is the fact that Amazon's "estimate" for technician work is, WAY off for a housecall visit for an actual computer technician. Only a damned fool of a computer technician would charge $88s for a housecall visit... The price range, especially changes rural vs a city...
Too much or too little?
@@jajajdjdjdj6434 Too little, most likely. Most contract jobs like this have min. requirements for time/pay (like, two hour min; meaning even if they finish in 10 min you still pay for 2 hours), when you consider that the expense of a house call is factored in ON TOP of this, that easily puts the total above the $200 range, as the tech will be 100% unavailable both going to, during, and leaving your particular call/job
@@The_Eldest_Millenial We charge $175/hr with a half hour minimum and i would quote 2 hours for the job though realistically it will probably take an hour tops. Quote for double what you expect, but charge for actual time used. I think this is a fair model.

I've had that experience with a locksmith. Left the keys inside and I'm "oh you're picking the lock, then?" he says NOPE and drills out the whole thing. "That'll be 300 bucks".. Lesson learned.. Cheaper to take a taxi to the home depot, buy a battery powered drill.
@@dafl00 WOW $300 plus a drilled out lock? It would be cheaper to smash the window...
yeah, the guy drove 1 hour each way and spend 2 hours, and would want to be paid more than 80 bucks... what a scammer...
@@matts.8342 The whole problem is that it was advertised as $80. Not $80-150 per hour....

@@JWSpradlin doesn't matter, way to much
$81.81 is also the estimate for a RAM installation. Now that's stonks.
You need to take into account the time spent driving to each location and vehicle upkeep/fuel, and taxes. $81 is kinda weak especially if a percentage goes to Amazon.
I hope you didn't get that technician fired.
I think the max for this case is 50 but I dont think you could get mad at them because they could get in trouble and anymore would have to be done by higher ups and not customer/home services
