Bandmaid are creatures of habit. Any time they are in public they are always in costume and standing in the order they appear on stage or in the mix.
That kind of structure is part of their survival technique. The way they are so different on stage and off is an indicator of their challenges. Miku is the master of this in the way she cosplays herself and kanami got that trick from the first day they met. I think they're both neurodivergent in different ways and this kind of thing is an enabler. They basically live on the best tourbus on the road on tour to protect their space, sometimes they'll even share the big star bed in a pile. They're a gang. Miku's major work of art.

Hate? was song #27 of 33 (3.5 hrs). That is the incredible thing about them. Being able to keep that energy up for that long, they are World class athletes in my book (especially Akane and this was shortly after her solo into Blackhole (220 bpm)), Po! I was there and I was getting tired standing and jumping for that time, even with adrenaline pumping (and I'm 62y/o, for God sake!). They really love their fans, Po! Btw, Misa (Bass) just sent out an Official fan mail called "Letter to the Allies," saying, "It's been a while since I've done a lot of slapping and picking on some of the songs. My arms are really cramped up though. LOL!" This is in regards to recording their new full album (9th) to be released this Summer with collabs. 1st up Mike Einziger (Incubus Guitarist) due out on 4/17/2024 (5 days), Po! 🦍🍌

In a short documentary on this concert by Ohrenje, there is a different camera angle of Kanami during the battle and you can see her 'crazy guitar solo' eyes. I have seen it in a few other videos of her during solo and it seems like she is in another world during those times. She is very intense and focused on only one thing.

Great reaction and yes, the way they mix their songs is great; (to my ears) Kanami (lead) is always on the far right, Miku (rhythm) is always on the far left, MISA (bass) is left, but not as far as Miku and Akane (drums) is generally center. If you listen to other Japanese rock/metal bands you'll find that this is pretty common in Japanese rock/metal. The thing about Band-Maid is that they are just mesmerizing to listen to and watch. Don't worry about stopping, you discuss things that are interesting.

When I listen to any Band-Maid album with over the ear headphones, Kanami is in my right ear, Miku and Misa in the left and Akane sounds like she’s in both ears at the same time and with Saiki’s voice, all of it combined together, sounds absolutely beautiful!

GINX, Thanks, you nailed the analysis of "Hate?". It is such a rock banger, no one can be disappointed with with it. That's why they have so many fans and are growing an appreciative audience worldwide. I'm a Maidiac and damned proud of it. I'm 75 years old and have seen and heard a LOT of rock music in my life from the iconic to the not so well know. I had simply given up on rock music as a present day artform until I heard these wonderfully talented, professional, and cohesive young women from Japan. I'm now hooked on their music for life. Our MAIDs have been together over 10 years now. You don't learn to play together like this overnight ;) . As long as you speak bass ... and guitar ... and drums, you will understand everything just fine ;) .
    BAND MAID is:
Miku Kobato (小鳩 ミク) - rhythm guitar, vocals, PR (Band founder, lyricist ... our flappy pigeon, po!)
Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波) - lead guitar (musical composer extraordinaire - the princess)
Akane Hirose (廣瀬 茜) - drums, percussion (see bananas ... and ramen - the gorilla)
MISA MISA MISA - bass guitar (drinks hard liquor and performs without shoes on stage - the barefoot assassin)
Saiki Atsumi (厚見 彩姫) - lead vocals ("we dance in the palm of her hand" - Domination - The Queen)

  • @greylocke100

Band Maid's mix is usually Miku Panned Hard Left, MISA panned Center Left, Akane Center, Saiki Center, Kanami Normally Hard Right except during solo's, where her cabinet goes into stereo and she is panned partway into the left channel. Her cabinet is the only one with 2 microphones on it for this reason, Miku's cabinet has one and MISA runs into a DI box like Akane's drum kit mic's are, and then they go straight into the PA. MISA's cabinet is used basically as her monitor, since she is the only member to not play to the click track. Then Saiki and Miku's vocal mic's are both hard center channel.

Oftentimes, MISA-san's bass sound is panned on both ears, I found. And Kanami-san's lead guitar, while panned only on the right ear, isn't normally loud in the mix unless required. I think that's when the lead guitar gets panned on both ears too. I'll have to listen out for it more.
Please, check out endless Story -- both MV and LIVE from this same concert. I think the audio mix and lyrics (different in the LIVE at the end) will be interesting to analyze. :D Thank you!

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 8 місяців тому +4

When Kanami's switches her pedal board to "Solo" her signal goes from being panned hard right, to being panned right and part of the left channel. That is why her amp cabinet has 2 microphones on it. The second mic is for her solo channel from her pedal board/amp. Her normal playing is only one of the mic's, then when she switches over it's both, with the second mic about 1/3rd into the left channel.

The separation on this mix allows the listener to easily hear Kanami on the right, Misa to the left, Akane in the middle, and Miku right beside Misa. You'll hear Miku intermittently throughout this cut, supporting Kanami and Misa. Band-Maid's compositions and arrangements lend themselves to multiple listens: you'll want to concentrate on each part individually just to hear everything that's going on and appreciate the complexity they blend into the mix. They always sound fabulous.
Kudos to Saiki for writing the lyrics with just the right mixture of sarcastic anger that makes "Hate?" such an entertaining tune.

I wonder if "Panning" might be one of the main reasons why Band-Maid has quite a few fans 50 years old and up enjoy their music so much most saying it has reinvigorated their love of old school rock and roll music. It made us old school rockers realize that Rock is not dead, it just moved to Japan!

Please also notice the wonderful harmony between the main vocalist and side guitarist. This performance is from the final show of their ten-year anniversary tour. To see where they came from you should look for their first music video for the song, Thrill.
Believe it or not, ALL of this almost didn't happen. Band Maid was a generic J-Pop band in the beginning and their first album did not sell very well. Their management company met with them and said they were going to release them from the contract, basically firing them. Miku and the ladies made a deal to shoot a music video and post it to UA-cam, if it didn't get any attention they would quit. The company agreed and the ladies picked a B-side song that they had written, most of the album had songs that were written for them. They figured if they were going out, they were going to do it on their terms with a song they wrote. The video is bare-bones low budget, just them in a white room with a couple costume changes. It was so early in their career that Miku had not learned how to play the guitar yet, she's just holding it as she lip-syncs.
At first nothing happened, then some UA-cam reactors found it and praised the song and shared it. Then other music fans found it and now it has over 20 MILLION views and the ladies finished their ten-year anniversary tour and will be going into the studio to start recording their next album. All because some music reactors found an obscure video in Japanese.
Now, you've also heard Lovebites, wait till you discover Hanabie (Ha-Na-Be-Eh), Nemophila, Bridear, Yōsei Teikoku, MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, Mary's Blood, Galneryus, Unlucky Morpheus.

Band Maid is definitely a musician’s and engineer’s band. This song is an example of their more chaotic and dense music. They have several. Not my favorite of theirs because I lean towards the melodic hard rock and prog elements they deliver.
That’s the two-edged sword of Band Maid. Their variety and depth of catalog means they have songs for every genre, but not every song can be everyone’s favorite.

Another reactor, or their subscriber, mention that the Call & Response "Battle" sounded like an argument between Saiki and whoever she hates. Maybe so. What do you think?

The lyrics were written by the lead singer on this one (unusual, since Miku usually writes them) and it's about a friend of hers whose boyfriend was cheating on her during covid. And now you know the "rest of the story."

Saiki wrote a song about me but that involved me rushing to a sports store in Tokyo before it closed to buy her the new Hanshin Tigers baseball cap. It was called "HAT?".😏

@@GaryHolloway-810 Well since they've done "at the drop of a hat", maybe they'll write you a song entltled "at the kick in the head." With you getting a special mention, natch.

It more strange to me the panning does not match the picture. I think they just leave the panning where it is for both guitars.

    • @markyg236

The panning mostly aligns with their default positions. Miku and MISA switch, but otherwise the pan matches the stage unless they are moving around. Kanami on the right, Akane and the vocals center, MISA left-center, and Miku on the left.

Not familiar with Japanese rock/metal bands?
    You should fix that!
    Love Bites - Holy Wars
    Nemophila - Revive
    Hanabie - We Love Sweets
Babymetal - Road to Resistance live from Japan.
All female, all unique, all kick a$$!
    You're welcome!🤣😇😎🤘🫶🙏

Yes, many bands, especially in the 60s and 70s panned this way and into the 80s, and of through out. It just became way less common in the last 20 years lol
