Saiki has a great vocal range, but Miku has both a higher and lower range than Saiki. Miku doesn't have the power of Saiki though, her voice is more 'sweet' for lack of a better term. They compliment each other perfectly.
From another of my files; Miku the Secondary Lead Vocalist is a Mezzo-Soprano, meaning she can sing lower and higher than Saiki the Primary Lead Vocalist, who is a Contralto/Alto. However Miku doesn't have the same vocal power that Saiki does. I have two different analogies explaining it. The first is audiophile: Miku only has a pre-amp installed, while Saiki has has the pre-amp and amplifier installed. The second is the hose: Take a hose with a screw nozzle, open it up so it covers the largest area, it doesn't spray very far or hard, that is Miku's voice. Tighten up the nozzle and now it can go very far with much more power, but it doesn't cover as wide an area, that is Saiki's voice. As of 2023, Miku has just under a full 3 octave range, while Saiki is just over 2 and half octaves according to several singers/vocal coaches. Both of them continue to train their voices and expand their range.
Thanks for all this :fascinating to know this, from a less musically educated perspective. The interplay/layering/ melding/ exchange between Saiki and her vocal "wonderchild" Miku is probably the aspect of BandMaid that I now most look forward to hearing. I tend to visualise it as two tributary streams ,flowing into each other then dividing again....as charming and mind-consuming as an actual creek running through a woodland. ! @@greylocke100
They used to feature both Miku and Saiki performing vocally in the same songs, particularly in the first three albums. Miku is a much better singer than most of their current songs would suggest. @@wave8359
True.... I would say SAiki has a good Melodic vocals? Very full.... i have seen few cover of their songs done by others with vocals, It feels so empty. No disrespect to them, Just my view... haha. The MAIDS are just made for each other.
I feel that Misa is one of the most intuitive and soulful bassist I have ever heard. She just has a knack of playing the right chord runs in EVERY song.
Yep....Kanami is a genius of composition and arrangement....but Misa is a genius at finding perfectly complimentary bass lines to augment the sound as a whole....but then there's Akane's genius, subdividing subdivisions and simultaneous syncopation doing quite complex math on the fly....now Saiki's genius is easiest to see, creating beautiful and complex vocal melodies that entrance, excite and emote, leading us on a beautiful musical journey....ohhhh....but the "pigeon", our little Miku's genius is the greatest of all.....for without her genius....NONE of this would exist....none of it.....not the band, the music, the excitement, nor the wonderful community of Maidiacs.....she wears the most hats of them all....lyricist, guitar player, vocalist, and creator of the band.....such a concentration of humble genius is truly a rarity beyond all.....67 y.o. and "fanboying" for 5 tiny Japanese musical dynamos.....they gave me back my faith in rock n roll....and frankly my faith in humanity....as per usual, your excitement and joy are great to watch....thank you...."po"
The only band I have ever listened to that every member is a star and brings something individual and exceeds the sum of it’s parts, the only downside is they have opened my eyes to how lazy all my previous favourite bands are in their writing and performances, Band Maid is now the way I measure any other bands worth.
Kanami's Larry Carlton jazz influence really comes across in this song, jazzy, funky and intricate as all get out. Beautifully arranged and nary a dull moment, always moving forward and growing and evolving through the song. Kanami works in a Digital Audio Workstation so she's like Oscar Peterson in planning out the entire composition and then gets feedback and changes from Misa and Akane. They are incredibly well rehearsed, so even with in-ear monitors and a click track they are already all on the same page when they start.
I love Wonderland, I’ve always loved Wonderland! I think it’s one of their most difficult songs to bring live to the stage for all of its intricacies and dynamics. Everyone isn’t just playing well, they’re each playing with nuance and musical intent. Wonderland is a breathtaking journey.💪🏻🤘🏻
The thing about MISA is that she doesn't just play bass, she plays _lead_ bass. 'Wonderland' is the hidden gem in their catalogue that I always seem to forget exists. This allows me to rediscover it for the "first time" whenever it pops-up.
On MISA's bassline, it is the same as the original to my ear, but if the Ladies do any modifications to their music in concert, it has been practiced to perfection. The saying, "Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals play it until they can't get it wrong.", is very apt as it is applied to Band-Maid. The Ladies are known for constant extensive practicing.
Kanami said she starts every day with an hour of fundamentals - i.e. technique exercises. That's before she starts practicing their huge catalogue, learning other guitarists' licks for education, and writing new stuff. Part of that is stereo typical Japanese _ganbari_ work ethic, part just who she is, and I suspect partly the fact that when they started Platinum Passport gave them enough of a stipend that they didn't have to have full- time non- music jobs while playing tiny clubs.
@@stevehall5128 Not sure about the stipend. As MISA at least had 3 part time jobs in addition to Band-Maid. And both Miku and Saiki worked in the noodle cafe restaurant of Platinum Passport's. However, from my understanding, is that Kanami's family is what would be considered upper middle class, not wealthy, but not struggling either. After all they have/had enough to send their 3 kids, Kanami and her brother and sister, to college without financial difficulties. And while in college, Kanami had enough disposable income to continue taking both her guitar and vocal lessons.
@@greylocke100 Yeah I mean it is all very fuzzy and undoubtedly will never be spelled out. I just find it interesting given the US ways, which have ranged from "Work at Kinko's between 3-month tours sleeping on fans' living room floors" to "Play 2 shows and get signed to a major label that you're in debt to for the rest of your life." It feels like PlatPass actually did the "artist development" part and stuck with the 'Maids, even after they (PlatPass) gave up on anything other than pop idols and models.
@stevehall5128 There have been some weird things I have noticed about Platinum Passport. Especially after the last group they managed, "Predia" disbanded/retired. PP has basically stripped itself down to support ONLY Band-Maid. Other artist's they used to manage have gone to other parts of Platinum Productions, which owns Platinum Passport. So, I have been trying to find someone who knows how to dig into Japanese company information. As I personally wouldn't mind investing in the company that manages the Ladies. And I am pretty sure there are a lot of other Maidiacs who feel the same as I do. If it would help the Ladies further their goals, in addition to buying their merch and music, I want to invest in them.
If two angels sang in Japanese, it would sound like Miku & Saiki ! ♥️ Their harmonies on the outro are simply perfect and ethereal. My ears never get tired of hearing it ! ♥️🕊️🤯
In the band commentary for this song Saiki said that before her surgery she couldn't sing in falsetto as she didn't know what is was and Miku taught her how: Kanami: Sai-chan's falsetto is beautiful. Miku: Sai-chan's falsetto became possible after the operation on your throat, po. Saiki: Well, that's so. Miku: Until then, you couldn't do it. Saiki: Because the phlegm had obstructed my throat. Like 'Ga-ra-ga-ra.' Miku: Some time ago, Sai-chan asked me, 'How to do falsetto?' po. Saiki: I said, 'I can't do that, because the phlegm obstructs my throat.' Miku: I said, 'Usually it doesn't obstruct.' po. Saiki: I had polyps in my throat, so it was always as if the phlegm were obstructing my throat. Kanami: That's so? Saiki: In my vocal cords, the phlegm was always staying there. Kamani: What a pity for you! Saiki: Hara-hara-hara-hara. Miku: It sounds koro-koro-koro, po. Saiki: Thanks to you all. Miku: After that, you can make a clean falsetto, po. Kanami: Anyway, it's fortunate that remaining Sai-chan's original voice character, the operation had been finished. And Sai-chan can luckily continue singing with the original voice. Miku: Yes, it is good. Akane: It is serious if Sai-chan's voice is nothing but pretty. Miku: Sai-cha's voice in the first album 'Maid in Japan' is completely different from the present voice. It is also the same as my case, po.
Great reaction as always.... If you listen very carefully MISA is basically following Saiki's vocal pattern. Band-Maid in opinion is the most incredibly gifted musicians. Keep up the great job... ♥️🤘🤘
That little cymbal part is a good segue to point out something you can listen for (along with the other 127 things) when listening to the maids. Akane will rarely prolong a pattern for more than a couple of measures in many of their songs (not all) and she tends to accent beats that take you off guard. Like, a lot. She is an extremely unique and creative drummer.
Thanks for the video. As you commented, this is a song that feels the harmony of this band's amazing playing. They tend to be noticed for their hard playing, but they also love beautiful rock ballads. 「anemone」、「Awkward」、「endiessStory」、「Daydreaming」...。 I look forward to seeing you figure it out and react to it. Their songs are numerous, but as long as you keep reacting to them, I'm going to keep up. Thank you for a nice Sunday.
Listen to the solo? I've reached the conclusion all Band-Maid songs are 5 intricately locked together solos. For a year or two it just baffled me how they could possibly put all these parts together. Then heard one of their songs played on piano, likely by Kanami, then it clicked she writes hook filled little symphonies. Then the other four take that framework, adding, refining and polishing it. Miku's lyrics and those little vocal and now guitar touches she add. Saiki's ever growing vocal power, lyrics, her increased stage presence. Akane's drumming, I was never big fan of double kick till Akane. She is not simply playing double pedal as fast as possible like we often hear. Her foot work is complex and always changing I don't how she remembers it all. Every day is leg day for Akane. She should write book how to burn 10000 calories a day while sitting down. Misa's basslines, what more can be said. She is locked with Akane establishing the rhythm with Miyu, supporting Saiki's vocal melodies, will either supporting or being a counterpoint to Kanami's lead. We say Kamani is singing during her solos, but Misa also sings. Kanami in full in Mincho mode is kind of terrifying, but you want more. I love how she has these underlining "solos" in many songs.
Type "Band-Maid moments / piano" into the search bar for a collection of clips of Kanami playing YOLO, Alone, and Daydreaming on piano. Apparently, she's playing Daydreaming with her sister.
You're spot on; I think maybe this is where you get some musicians who are actually technically proficient whose reaction is "Wow they can really play!" and yet Band- Maid doesn't seem to _totally_ resonate with them: they're missing the overall compositional genius.
I've been obsessed with this song since I discovered the band two years ago. Was in absolute tears when I finally got to see this song performed live a few weeks ago at Yokohama. My sister who was in front of me simply gave me a hug after the song.
Yes....first to view and comment....you wanna hear miku blow your mind....try corallium at eggman in 2022 or sayanokidori acoustic....I prefer the live version, but the acoustic really will blow your mind
You can go back as much as you want ! Every Band Maid fan loves 'Wonderland' and now you know why too. It excites me to say that you are still just scratching the surface ! I admire your dedication to wait to react rather than charge ahead but the pleasure in that is you can really spend the week deep diving into each song. Love your reactions, can't wait for more !
Band-Maid always sounds so natural, so organic, with such an improvisational flow. But it's all planned, composed to mesh together. All the improvisation takes place over the period of time when Kanami is trading MIDI files with Misa and the rest of the band. ...or when they're sitting together in the lounge of the tour bus speeding down the interstate. This is Band-Maid's magic: the hard work they put into their compositions and their willingness to experiment with new forms and styles. We all want to put a label on Band-Maid - Are they Metal? Prog? Pop? Punk? They're all of those and none of those. They are Band-Maid and they can do anything they want.
Wonderland is a rich, subtly complex & beautiful song. This is off the Conqueror album which is a masterpiece and my personal favorite from the maids. Saiki is a gifted vocalist and her voice has the power to penetrate the heavy Maid wall of sound. Miku has a beautiful voice that has such a pleasing, soothing quality and she harmonizes so well with Saiki.
When Kanami composed Wonderland, arranged it, and completed the demo, she couldn't help but smile. Kanami said something like that in the commentary for this live DVD. I think Kanami wanted to hear Saiki's voice in its entirety, and wanted to sing along with her on the guitar.
It took a while for me to warm up to this album at first, but after a time, I have really come to embrace it, love and appreciate it. It is simply beautiful!
@@TherealSeriousMoonlight it really is and I often do. I think fir many of us, it was very different from previous albums and it took a while to grow on us, myself included. But I have really grown to love that whole album! Mincho worked some magic on that thing!
You should check out the acoustic version of Sayonakidori. It's just Miku, Misa, and Akane and it really shows off Miku's growth as a vocalist. Also, I'm glad you liked this song. Wonderland doesn't get nearly enough love.
Everyone is saying Miku's voice has a lot of range, so now let NittPicc hear it for herself. For me "Sayonakidori", either the electric version or the acoustic version would be fine, but in reality, I would love NittPicc to compare them ( and secretly I love Akane's backup vocals).
Bandmaid sings with Japanese lyrics and forces viewers to look them up online if they want to know the meaning of the lyrics. Also, at overseas concerts, he teaches the audience Japanese, which is not very useful, under the guise of ``Saiki's Japanese Lessons''. However, the audience is full of kind people, so they follow her obediently. lol
Structurally, it's interesting on a Lot of levels, one of which is that it begins with its chorus. Not the only rock song to have done that, of course, but not common. Has been solidly in my B-M Top Ten since the first time I heard it.
In addition to the showcase of Saiki's vocal abilities, i have always loved Wonderland for it's jazzy flavor. I think it would be incredible if they did another Band-Maiko type project doing jazz fusion songs. Misa and Akane definitely have a solid jazz foundation.
Many people have mentioned that this song is a true Mincho Masterpiece. Her composing skills are on display here in abundance. It took me a while to warm up to this album - Conqueror - but I am totally in love with it at this point. It's a just such a beautiful album. From the opening strains of this song, I fight to keep my emotions in check. It tugs at one's heart strings in the most Wonderful way!
Princess Nittpicc, this is one of my favorite songs by Band Maid. It really lets Saiki explore and utilize her vocal range. I would love to hear Saiki sing this song again with her more mature and powerful voice.
I heard this song many times during their domestic tour last year and recently at the Yokohama extravaganza OKYUJI on February 22. The February 22 performance in particular was recorded in its entirety by multiple video cameras and film crews, so I don't know how it will be released, but perhaps you will be able to see it in the near future. As for the quality of the performance, I dare not mention it here so as not to spoil your enjoyment. But I will just say that it will probably not disappoint you.
Saiki's falsetto voice sounds so good it's a pity she seldom uses it...... Also, there are some songs where Misa just goes off and practically solos the entire song in the background and yet magically still manages to complement the song it's kinda mind blowing... Btw, most reactors start off with Domination (Live) and Freedom (Live). Trust me, you will love Freedom (Live) too!
Saiki uses falsetto only when the song needs and where it needs. That seems to be the way with Band-Maid. She uses both falsetto and chest voice for the same note or notes these days ❤
Nitpix, I want you to know I subscribed to your channel. You are the first one I have done this for, after watching UA-cam videos for the past 5 years and not subscribing to anyone else. As a former musician and music major/drummer your re-actions are spot on. Your knowledge of music (theory) is refreshing and much needed. Let's talk Band Maid! Akane--------------------------------------------------------I If I played the way she does back during the Disco era and 80's when I was on the road working in show bands, I would have been fired instantly. It's amazing to me the way drumming has changed but it's all good. Akane is a beast, her double kick work is flawless and taste full. She understands syncopation and delivers the goods. I stopped listening to music 20 years ago as it was all rubbish. Then one day 5 years ago I clicked on a video that had a picture of these girls in maid outfits. I thought to myself this should be really funny. The song was Thrill. I sat there with my mouth hanging open. Girls can't do this, can they? WOW! I fell in love with Band Maid, what else can I say. This old chauvinist you know what, got a real awakening. So, your assignment for next week is to do 2 songs because you got a lot of catching up to do- we love your commentary!!!
Akane, in my opinion, is the unsung hero of this song. So tasteful in everything she does, but like every person in the band, never takes anything away from what the others are doing. Ahh ... the "Tugging at the heart strings" section of BAND MAID. Daydreaming MV - Page (live or acoustic) - At The Drop of a Hat (from the Acoustic Show) - Mirage (if you can find the live version) ... Have some tissues handy and take a sedative first. Luvin your work.
Personally I feel these girls too tight to go off and Free-Range. Kanami is Always doing something, she never stops doing something. So many complain about Kanami's solo's are too short, but never realize how busy she is throughout the entire song. She's my guitar Hero, not sure how she keeps her hands from falling off during a show. Definitely my favorite Saiki outfit era......it's stunning!
I’ve been watching reaction videos for 5 years now. You are like a breath of fresh air! You’re knowledgeable, intelligent, funny & REAL! So many reactors could learn from you on how to become better at reacting. It’s really easy to see which reactors are faking it. I know none of your fans will get that from you. I just look forward to every Sunday with you. Thank you for what you do. Like Band-Maid, you make me smile.
Kanami loves to Throw in a couple extra beats or a bar sometimes to add anticipation. “Sense” takes really good advantage of delaying just a bit from what your ear expects. Puzzle and Sayonakidori both use phrases of 3/3/2 over a 4/4. Just some of Kanamis “sneaky progressive” tricks.
If you ask me, dear Saiki has already surpassed her childhood idol by quite a long distance. Maybe not when it comes to sales figures, but both vocally and especially character-wise with her career path and her development. 😏 One of their statements 👇🏻is correct, but for me these ladies are damn close. :)🤘🏻 ___________________ 「 _"完璧なんてありえない" / Perfection? No one gets there._ 」 - from *BAND-MAID* - 'Warning' 🎶🕊
Saiki has put it that she has what Kobato lacks, and vice versa, so between them they have pretty much the Complete Voice. But then the power stuff doesn't do Kobato's voice any favours. Again, Saiki has put it that every time they go hard she kind of thinks: "Sorry Kobato, for ruining you strengths."
As far as I know, this is the only song that Kanami called a masterpiece. So you could say that this song is different from other songs. Oh, btw, there is a Band-Maid song "Different" which is quite different from other songs as well.😉
This is a great showcase for Saiki and Miku, but I also think it might be my favourite drum performance. Not flashy, but so expressive and enhances the emotion of the song.
They nearly always play songs the same way. Sometimes they add stuff to the intro, transitions, and bridge for live shows. Even that is worked out ahead of time and sometimes repeated in other shows. It's the way they write their songs that allow Misa and Akane to be creative. Kanami sends them a demo with the guitar parts, vocal melody, and programmed drum a bass parts. Then they are free to be creative in rewriting their parts. Kanami was asked what she does if she doesn't like their changes. She basically said that she nearly always likes them and that they make them Band Maid songs. I do think she does more back and forth with Akane since the drums are so key to all their songs. And she and Akane have been close friends since before Band Maid.
You're not crazy, that transition at 7:32 is SO SLICK and it kills me that so many reactors seem to miss it. And you're right, if they didn't pull it off cleanly it would sound like Miku falling down some stairs. Interestingly, Kanami will also _intentionally_ write bits that sound like the wheels are coming off for a bar or two 🤪
Thanks again, NittPicc, love the comments! For me Wonderland is one of those compositional "wonders", for many of the reasons you pointed out. There are so many interlocking parts and layering, but the groove and momentum of the song is never lost. Besides being beautiful, Saiki's vocal line never gives you any solid clues as to where the song is going to resolve tonally. Kanami keeps you guessing till the very end when Saiki finally lands the home key, Miku comes in with the harmonic support, and Kanami's opening riff finally comes back. It's very jazzy, but this is one where I feel Kanami's classical training also shows through.
Not having known much about singing, Saiki was the last member of the band for me to be impressed with, but her work especially on the more ballad-y songs like this really opened my eyes to how amazing of a singer she is. And if you go to a Band-Maid show you’ll be surprised how many grown men you see in tears during songs like this 😂
Saiki uses to be more inconsistent and didn't have the range she has now. Even during lockdown her vocal wasn't always perfect. December and The Day of Maid okyuji were her best vocal performance during the lockdown. Since then she continued to grow. I can definitely say that she's grown to be, not just an impressive but an amazing singer as you said. She doesn't have the best voice, but many amazing vocalists don't have the voice control, breathe control and rhythmic sense that Saiki has.
@@wanderleyjesus6772 Akane's drum work is like "yellow hilighter" on perfect vocals. Her work heightens emotions at the right time, and always in the right measure ! 🥁🤯 As if being beautiful isn't enough...she has to be a near flawless performer ! ♥️
Tagging along here to point out the same thing about Kanami. It’s the same “mi” as in Miku. An “i” in romanized Japanese is always a hard E sound. Vowels are the same as in Spanish, if that helps.
Yessssss!, Sundays with Band Maid. Ten years of writing songs always taking the difficult path of yellow floor tiles have made them a songwriting prodigy and the absolute Queens of Transitions. What you hear in this Wonderland live performance is entirely in the studio version. Her Conqueror LP contains most of her wonderful mid-tempo songs. Thanks NittPicc!, excellent analysis.
It's like a treasure hunt listening to their music. I cannot help but be excited to find a musical treasure in their songs. First of all, even if it's a medium tempo or slow ballad, for me it's always Misa who makes it interesting. And finding or discovering tiny changes in each verse or transition is another fun part of listening to their songs. So nice.
As a recent fan of Band Maid I am still working my way through their catalog. This is my first time hearing this tune. The slower tempo is very pleasant and the vocals are almost hypnotic. As usual, the musicianship is impeccable.
Band-Maid is music for musicians! They have enough pop sensibilities that I think just about anyone can enjoy them, but people with a trained musical ear can find all sorts of wonderful little treats scattered through the mix. Wonderland is one of my absolute favorites!
It’s so awesome to see this oft overlooked performance of Wonderland given the attention and appreciation it deserves. I was completely spellbound the first time I heard it, and often still are, in fact. In rewatching and a re-listening note that Miku is playing a couple lead guitar touches during a middle section of the song. The lighting on her is quite low to see but she’s playing a couple single note bends to add a touch of vibrancy to the song; as if it’s not vibrant already. 🤷🏻♂️😀 Destiny is a wise woman, indeed! 👏🏼😎 Next? The song they use as their emotional show closer and Akane inevitably breaks into tears. (There’s a story behind that, I believe). - “Endless Story” - official music video Take Care and Rock On!! 🔥🤘🏼🎸🥁🎤🎹😎✌🏼
There are _so many_ cool things in this song. One thing to listen for is the weird countermelody in the second verse (about 5:00 in this video). If you must listen to Miku by herself it makes no sense but in the context of the song it fits perfectly. So many times Kanami is not playing a "lead" line, it's more like a little pattern that works like the background wash in a watercolor. It gives a mood, or a feel, rather than a lead that draws your attention. And the descant in the ending - hoo boy! It's like she's spreading icing on a cake! Mincho, head down, lost in the moment ... Now I'm hungry.
This song has become one of my favorites, partly because of your influence. You helped me to appreciate the pure beauty of this masterpiece. Thanks Antony-san-po!
“I don’t want to hear sad stories; I just want you to laugh.” I think you would enjoy the lyrics if you can find a translation. This performance is exactly like the studio recording. WONDERLAND is one of their best yet underrated songs. It’s satisfying to watch someone who really appreciates what they’re doing there. The band is doing so much here, all the time leaving space in the music. KANAMI’s laid back drumming, especially the cross-stick on the snare, gives the piece a Jazzy feel that I’ld like to hear more of. But all I can hear is SAIKI. She just nails it here. As you analyze more songs, in addition to SAIKI’s power, tone, and amazing harmonies with KOBATO, pay attention to her *phrasing*. She’s unlike any other Japanese vocalist I’ve heard. Just wait ‘till you hear the original pandemic stream live of *ABOUT US*, a song the band wrote as the lockdown prevented them from being with their fans. It packs an emotional punch not captured in the studio or later live recordings. Other songs showing this very musical side of BAND-MAID include *BUBBLE, SMILE, and ENDLESS STORY*.
Yay! What a great choice for you to react to. Your musically trained ears are rewarded often by compositions like this. I have no doubt you would have fun finding a place for a flute part. There are several “cinematic, bombastic” songs from the Maids. “Wonderland” is one of the best. ❤ “Puzzle” is right there, but my current favorite is “Daydreaming.” The more you hear it, the more you love it 🥰 P.S. Let us know when you think you’re ready for “About Us.”
I had been listening to Band Maid for about a year (reactions, videos, playlists, etc) when I heard this song and my mind was blown by how well they did the whole jazz/pop vibe. Really excellent and such feeling! After this and several other "slow and quieter" songs they became my number one listen. They are really blessed with talent and we are blessed to have them around giving us such joy in music.
Like most Maidiacs did you ever think that five gorgeously talented Japanese musicians with a maid theme would ever have such an impact on you? Akane and Misa are right up there with Bonham and Jones, Entwistle and Moon, they basically live in each other's musical pockets and are known to finish each other's musical sentences, what a Band Po 👍🍻
Progressive jazz rock fusion ... incredible vocal performance by Saiki, virtuoso playing by the band, another exquisite serving from the best band on the planet.
Wow, you truly get it. Band-maid is the finest band i have ever had the privilege to hear. I've found myself looking forward to your Band-maid Sundays. You're reactions are genuinely entertaining and fun! Well done! I recommend watching Freedom live, for Akane's drum solo.
Wonderland is a great progy, jazz rocker with touches of funky elegance wrap around a mid-tempo, storytelling, epic soundscape. In other words, as Ryan Mear and Chase put it, ”Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things!” 😊 BTW - For really special, reimagined compositions of Wonderland and other songs from Band-Maid, check out FXDx Studios YT channel. Thx, NittPicc - my new fave reactor!
They definitely have jazz DNA in their sound. One of my favorite B-M bridges is the little jazz bridge in Secret My Lips. I could listen to an entire album of them playing that style.
Check out "Start Over". The video is a bit cringe-y but it's a beautiful song. Don't remember who said it but I find some truth to the statement that they are a jazz band playing rock music.
14:47 That buildup you describe applies to a lot of Band-Maid songs, really. So while you *could* just put on any B-M album and get hit after hit of that feeling, I'd like to direct you to my second favorite song of theirs, "Blooming". It, uh, it'll take you on a journey.
Great reaction!!! I think you've reacted to eight songs by them so far, but the pigeon hole is so deep that's just scratching the surface. If you want to hear Saiki bring the feels check out the acoustic live version of Puzzle. Did you know they have an alter ego version called BAND-MAIKO? Their maiko song Gion-cho might be their most beautiful video. Maybe try a song with Miku as a lead singer like "Sayonakidori".
Two things caught my attention: the dialog between bass and guitar, in one compass bass starts and guitar finishes, for around 8 compass (4:10 your time) and during the calm part the silence of Akane (9:16), her intervention (9:24) and then silence again. Among many other small jewels here and there.
I think it’s time to listen to Miku’s song “Sayonakidori”. On every album, there’s a song where Miku sings lead. During their concerts/servings, there’s a portion where Saiki takes a break and Miku interacts with the crowd, and leads into an instrumental and one of the song where she sings lead. Sayonakidori is probably the fan favorite of these Miku-led songs. There are two versions worth watching, the acoustic version featuring just Miku, Misa, and Akane from their Christmas Acoustic Special Concert, and the fully electrified one with Kanami shredding it up. Both are worth reacting to, and would make a great 1-2 punch of a double reaction, especially given the contrast between the two versions
Misa is my favorite bass player of this time. Her playing is so unique. Most bass players just chug the open low string and hold the beat but she plays like a lead instrument. She spends more time in the higher frets than the lower ones sometimes. Our barefoot assasin.
Saiki is just so damned good! I love her voice with its power and sass and when wanted soft sweetness. Personally I think she doesn't realize how good she is, but I know I do and love it. I would love to see you react to tthe video of her singing in concert with just a piano that she has learned to play in the last two years. The song is "Choose Me," and you can hear the nervousness in her voice since it is her first solo completely on her own, and yet this is so so good. ua-cam.com/video/1z7BVaavLu4/v-deo.html I love this whole band so much. It is funny to me that having been around from the early days of the Beatles and having watched the girls all go crazy over them, it is kind of funny to see us older males now have a deep fondness for these women. I think we have sort of claimed them as our band. I know they have a lot of younger fans, but us old guys seem to treasure them a bit more.
I have a hard time getting into Wonderland. It is jazzy, and I like jazzy stuff. MISA is jamming. I like when MISA is jamming. But, I think it is a bit too busy. I would like it more laid back. Slower. More chilled. This reminds me of this kind of busy New York jazz where the instruments are constantly going at too high speed and urgency. Music I turn off as soon as I hear them, because it triggers the wrong things in my brain and body. So no, not my thing BAND-MAID. And it is not many BAND-MAID songs I say that about. I love almost everything they do. Please BAND-MAID, do some chill jazz stuff. I know you can do it. I would love it.
Yes, this is quite different. One of their most complex and understated songs, with lots of jazz and soul influences. Very few reactors/reviewers hear the little complexities that you pointed out. Great take!
One video you can find that they make a "mistake", was in the newer video of Play. I'll let you find it when you react to it, since it just makes them even better. Because you get to see the fun they have doing their thing. I also remember there was an unofficial video somewhere of Saiki losing a shoe in the audience at one of their shows. Think it caused her to not get back to the stage in time, Miku was like "Alright, guess I'm up" and just sang her part.
She kicked off her shoes during Freedom at Zepp so she could go into the ladies section, Miku took over the vocals for the last part of the song whilst they rescued Saiki. Saiki stayed shoeless for the next song Real Existence until Kanami's solo when she retrieved them.
4 years i have been listening to this, and i just found something new in it thanks to your reaction. looking forward to when you react to BAND-MAID's Puzzle.
Saiki has a great vocal range, but Miku has both a higher and lower range than Saiki. Miku doesn't have the power of Saiki though, her voice is more 'sweet' for lack of a better term. They compliment each other perfectly.
From another of my files;
Miku the Secondary Lead Vocalist is a Mezzo-Soprano, meaning she can sing lower and higher than Saiki the Primary Lead Vocalist, who is a Contralto/Alto.
Kawaii Davey"Sweet" is the perfect term.🤗
Nicely said, and completely accurate. The little pigeon that could!
Perfect! my thoughts exactly!
The only band I have ever listened to that every member is a star and brings something individual and exceeds the sum of it’s parts, the only downside is they have opened my eyes to how lazy all my previous favourite bands are in their writing and performances, Band Maid is now the way I measure any other bands worth.
コレはホンマにエエ曲❤
Band Maid has no category, they just write and perform good music
Saiki's got the power, and Miku's got the range. They compliment each other. 😻
Very well said!!
MVP: Akane's rimshots ;)
If two angels sang in Japanese, it would sound like Miku & Saiki ! ♥️ Their harmonies on the outro are simply perfect and ethereal. My ears never get tired of hearing it ! ♥️🕊️🤯
In the band commentary for this song Saiki said that before her surgery she couldn't sing in falsetto as she didn't know what is was and Miku taught her how:
Kanami: Sai-chan's falsetto is beautiful.
Miku: Sai-chan's falsetto became possible after the operation on your throat, po.
Saiki: Well, that's so.
Miku: Until then, you couldn't do it.
Saiki: Because the phlegm had obstructed my throat. Like 'Ga-ra-ga-ra.'
Miku: Some time ago, Sai-chan asked me, 'How to do falsetto?' po.
Saiki: I said, 'I can't do that, because the phlegm obstructs my throat.'
Miku: I said, 'Usually it doesn't obstruct.' po.
Along with "About Us" "Wonderland" toys with your emotions in the most melancholy but joyous way possible.🤗
It is very Memorable. 🙂

I agree totally...thats what makes trying to play drums to most Band Maid songs beat for beat almost impossible !!!!
Thanks for the video.
As you commented, this is a song that feels the harmony of this band's amazing playing.
They tend to be noticed for their hard playing, but they also love beautiful rock ballads.
「anemone」、「Awkward」、「endiessStory」、「Daydreaming」...。
I look forward to seeing you figure it out and react to it.
You probably heard her playing YOLO on piano. Piano was Kanami's first instrument and most of their songs start there.
I think Misa would be a great jazz player.
Genres? We don't need no stinkin' genres.
Some folks always harp on the LP Conqueror but ignore the fact that the whole album is experimental as all get out. The album is so amazing!
my fav album.
Great album!
It took a while for me to warm up to this album at first, but after a time, I have really come to embrace it, love and appreciate it. It is simply beautiful!
It's really fantastic as an _album_ Listen to it start to finish.
Just on Sundays isn't enough Band-Maid
The joke "no but different is another song" 😂
Everyone is saying Miku's voice has a lot of range, so now let NittPicc hear it for herself. For me "Sayonakidori", either the electric version or the acoustic version would be fine, but in reality, I would love NittPicc to compare them ( and secretly I love Akane's backup vocals).
I say do a twofer, the Shibuya Eggman version first then the acoustic.
As far as the vocal goes, Acoustic wins for me - so exquisitely beautiful! I don't like Miku's vocal so much in the original version.
NP, we are lucky to have you in the Band-Maidiac community - welcome!
And this was live!
If you ask me, dear Saiki has already surpassed her childhood idol by quite a long distance. Maybe not when it comes to sales figures, but both vocally and especially character-wise with her career path and her development. 😏
One of their statements 👇🏻is correct, but for me these ladies are damn close. :)🤘🏻

Heavy stuff, I'd say.😂
Actually Miku's mid to high range vocal is powerful. Her voice just isn't right fit for rock/metal sound.
When it comes to both singers, it's Saiki is the moon and Miku is the stars in a beautiful night sky
As far as I know, this is the only song that Kanami called a masterpiece. So you could say that this song is different from other songs.
Oh, btw, there is a Band-Maid song "Different" which is quite different from other songs as well.😉
Different indeed ;) .
This is a great showcase for Saiki and Miku, but I also think it might be my favourite drum performance. Not flashy, but so expressive and enhances the emotion of the song.
Akane's touch and precision in this song blows me away !!!!!
Kanami has said, "Band-Maid is not a jam band." Which honestly I am thankful for.
Thank you so much for the dedication of my favorite song!! You're the sweetest and I appreciate you! 🥰
It was a perfect suggestion! I jumped right in because I couldn’t wait after the interview! ❤️❤️❤️
You're not crazy, that transition at 7:32 is SO SLICK and it kills me that so many reactors seem to miss it. And you're right, if they didn't pull it off cleanly it would sound like Miku falling down some stairs.
Interestingly, Kanami will also _intentionally_ write bits that sound like the wheels are coming off for a bar or two 🤪
My favourite Band-Maid trait. 😂
Destiny did not steer you wrong, Wonderland is musical brilliance!! Great job!! 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂🕊
Saiki Saiki Saiki!
The section beginning at 9:16 always makes me tear up. Saiki's jazzy falsetto has such a sweet pleading tone to it. It's just beautiful !😘
and the small intervention from Akane just in the middle of this part
@@wanderleyjesus6772 Akane's drum work is like "yellow hilighter" on perfect vocals. Her work heightens emotions at the right time, and always in the right measure ! 🥁🤯

So nice.
For me, members try to make Misa stand out more, but personally I think everyone's making it sound super creative and interesting.
Kanami’s arr’s are one kind of Wonderland 🔥❤️ Amazing musicians 🤘❤️ Love it!
Destiny is a wise woman, indeed! 👏🏼😎
Next? The song they use as their emotional show closer and Akane inevitably breaks into tears. (There’s a story behind that, I believe).

Take Care and Rock On!!
"DAY DREAMING"をお勧めしたいです😊
It is one of my all time favourite songs from any artist. Musical masterpiece.
Great suggestion from Destiny and a great reaction/analysis from NittPic. The Princesses are knockin' it outta the park! 🕊
Yay! What a great choice for you to react to. Your musically trained ears are rewarded often by compositions like this. I have no doubt you would have fun finding a place for a flute part.
There are several “cinematic, bombastic” songs from the Maids. “Wonderland” is one of the best. ❤
“Puzzle” is right there, but my current favorite is “Daydreaming.” The more you hear it, the more you love it 🥰
P.S. Let us know when you think you’re ready for “About Us.”
NittPicc is feisty ! She could probably place a flute part in Rinne ! 😆

You still need to check out their songs: Bubble & Manners
especially MANNERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Happy you did this one, brilliant song off my favourite album 'Conqueror'
Wonderland live is probably my favorite song from them.
I really enjoy their heavier stuff.. but this? Those is a masterpiece.
A new pigeon hole to explore, Thanks Tom!
@@markyg236 The guy's interpretations are really cool. I wonder if the Maids have heard them?
From start to finish, maybe their "Jazziest" song. Jazziest section of all still goes to that wee bit in Brand New Road.
They definitely have jazz DNA in their sound. One of my favorite B-M bridges is the little jazz bridge in Secret My Lips. I could listen to an entire album of them playing that style.
@@armynurseboy Me too!
Check out "Start Over". The video is a bit cringe-y but it's a beautiful song. Don't remember who said it but I find some truth to the statement that they are a jazz band playing rock music.
@@markyg236 That would be a stretch for me, as a former jazz trumpeter.
As others have said, don't sleep on Miku's singing. After you do Daydreaming, maybe check out Sayonakidori live acoustic for some real good Miku
14:47 That buildup you describe applies to a lot of Band-Maid songs, really. So while you *could* just put on any B-M album and get hit after hit of that feeling, I'd like to direct you to my second favorite song of theirs, "Blooming". It, uh, it'll take you on a journey.
One of my favorite power ballads EV-AH. So so happy you covered this song on your BAND-MAID journey! The closing verse gives me goosebumps every time.
The acoustic version of 'Sayonakidori' is beautiful, as is either version of the bittersweet 'Time'.
One of my favorites.
Two things caught my attention: the dialog between bass and guitar, in one compass bass starts and guitar finishes, for around 8 compass (4:10 your time) and during the calm part the silence of Akane (9:16), her intervention (9:24) and then silence again. Among many other small jewels here and there.
one of my favorites
The Shibuya Eggman version is here : ua-cam.com/video/wbXUXVmu_X4/v-deo.html
In Band-Maid no one stands out, because they all stand out, and blend in to make a band that is more than the sum of it's parts.
Check out the Miku song Sayonakidori official and acoustic version...
Thank you for your great reaction!!! Any song from Band Maid is awesome!!!
When Miku sings in high register, it's powerful yet cute, Saiki's is powerful with a hint of sass ❤
They have so much material that you might have to do two songs per Sunday!
Must listen to daydreaming by band maid. One of saiki's best vocals in my opinion
Yes, this is quite different. One of their most complex and understated songs, with lots of jazz and soul influences. Very few reactors/reviewers hear the little complexities that you pointed out. Great take!
BAND-MAID doing BAND-MAID THINGS!
I'll advocate for my favorite song: Blooming. It would make a nice followup to Wonderland.
