I I enjoyed seeing the old ash pack basket. Many folks used them when I was growing up in the Adirondacks. You might enjoy a little cinnamon in your honey apple cider drink.

Never tried the apple cider vinegar and honey combo. I'm a huge fan of ginger root. Just peel and slice as needed. You don't even have to peel it when it's cut in smaller chunks, but peeling reveals more surface area. It's pretty good with hot water and honey. It's my go to when I don't want caffeine or tea/coffee.

It's -2, windy and it's a perfect day to be out?!? You are definitely a badass! 😄
When you were talking about people bickering online and being negative - So agree - it also gave me a flash of Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Heroes with the "negative waves, man". 😄Guess I'm showing my age.☺️
    Excellent video as usual!💜

I really like the longer videos, especially at the yurt. I'm glad you pointed out the cattiness of the comments. Keep doing what you're doing. I'm guessing that's an ash tree and some kind of insect is eating away at it.

Can't tell you how many Ash trees I've had to cut down just this year the bore is going to wipe out our population. I'm next door in Ohio.
Like your attitude about being outdoors. I feel the same way about getting out no matter what gear or skill sets you have. Nobody is born with inherent outdoor skills. It's one of those things that over time and practice that you gain knowledge and experience.
Keep em coming and enjoy yourself!
    Beeps.

Greetings from a neighboring state . Beautiful eastern hardwoods you have there in PA . Glad to see that I wasn't the only one outside during that brutal January cold snap . You are correct about those tracks at 30:20 being made by a canine . As you may have already guessed , they were made by a Red Fox , or possibly a very big Grey . Reds often use downed logs , to travel easier perhaps . Once , while hunting from a tree stand , I saw an adult Red using several of these logs in it's morning commute back to it's den , only to see it again many hours later at dusk , taking the EXACT same path going back out . Pretty cool !

You are achieving your goal: Every time I watch one of your videos, I want to get out into the woods.
I have only one ash on my woodlot in northern Massachusetts and it looks a lot like that. I didn't think the borer was there yet, so I'll have to take a closer look. The loss of our ash will be a great tragedy.

Dan, may I suggest "Mammal Tracks & Sign: A Guide to North American Species," by Marc Elbroch. It can be a tough read if you try to sit down and read it straight through. But where it really shines is the "actual sized" track pages in the middle of the book. I created a small reference book from those pages that I take out with me when I'm tracking (the whole book is too heavy to lug around), and then if I have additional questions, I make my notes and go back to the main book to answer them. Great videos! I hope to get up to train with you soon.

I have a cabin in the middle of nowhere in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and love to go out and try the stuff that you are doing. The Ash Tree was killed by the Emerald Ash Bore. I had 87 that were killed on 2.5 acres in Oakland county Michigan at my other house. Killed off great habitat for Morel Mushrooms too.

I am gonna go with the ash tree and it has beetles that have bored in. Perhaps emerald ash beetle. Being in the West I've never seen an ash tree. We just have mesquite, to varieties of Palo Verde trees, and the desert ironwood. In the water basins you can find sycamores, cottonwoods, and salt ceders. Would be fun just to walk through a hardwood forest some day.

look at a topo map of your area and think about the trails you found. considerations are food, water, and secure sleeping areas deer will almost always come into its bed by coming into the wind - smelling its bed. Then it'll turn around and watch its back trail. My father bought farms from time to time and I learned much scouting in the snow.

lol, you really did give the answer away with the close up.
Heard Joe talk about those nasties - here in Texas we have something nearly as bad: Longhorn Beetles. I've found holes in my trees big enough to stick my thumb in. Grubs are tasty, but I wasn't happy to trade a half dozen trees (older than me, in the middle of a 100,000 human dwellings) just to try a few bugs. We're about to lose the big one, too. Damn tree parasites.

Giveaway: ash beetles, critters tearin off bark to eat em. Had that happen to a bunch of mine. Usually starts at the tops, so watch for widowmakers. Also, sometimes deer movement is determined more by terrain features and environment vs vegetation. We had some recent clearcuts, and the main trails remained more or less on the same path

Great video, as usual! 4 things:
1: I asked my buddy Jason Chapman, who tracks and traps for a living and he echoed some others on here about checking out som Tom Brown books.
2: Dude, spot on about Spam, it goes well with A1 or on a sandwich with cheddar and A1. However, I implore you to try a Hawaiian style breakfast. You get a bed of rice, Asian sticky rice is best, some scrambled eggs, and some diced and sautéd spam, mix it all together and enjoy! I add a little ketchup on top as well but that's eater's preference.
3: 22:30, excellent words of wisdom to online viewers. Quit being a Monday morning quarterback and lift people up instead of putting them down.
4: T shirts should be good prizes ALL year. I love rocking the junior high, high school long John under a t shirt look when it's little nippy outside.

Say Heah Coalcracker, Been that done that. I was in Andover, and on the other side of Pymatuning and on the PA. side. I hear you, it was really that cold. But we did stay indoors most of the time, but braved that cold periodically to practice some cold survival. I even carved a couple of crude spoon's with my new Flexcut Carving Jack. I also had my (2) new Customs that William Collins made me, their becoming my Fav's. I also brought along my 24"Council Wood Craft Pack Axe with the heavy duty sheath and sling, and my Agawa Canyon 21 Boreal Saw. I'm asked alot if I carry all that on me, No I dont. When I Scout a new area, I pick and choose from that bunch. I like traveling lite, so usually I bring my Survival Bushcraft Knife which is my Paul'ies Pride, It's a 5 1/8"" blade made out of a Cryo 3V. I like taking my Axe, and my Saw which I carry attached to my Kodiak Gearsling, The knife is always on person. But around camp or when we go out as a group, I love my Paul'ies Delight, I call it my Straight Kukuri. and it sure is. I can use it as a large knife and in that case, I carry it as my main knife. It baton's great and it slices like a hot knife through butter. Actually it's my take off my BK-4/Khuris that I own. That's why I commisioned William to make them because I liked what William did with his Master Woodsman. But mine is a little different and that's why William allowed me to name mine. I did post them on my Google Plus. Yeah, the weather had one on us. But I heard next week we might be in the 60's, go figure, huh. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

For years now I have been using a cheap push mower to channel deer past my tree stands and blinds. It seems that deer are just as lazy as humans. Invariably, within a day of mowing a new trail, they find it and start using it. Curiosity maybe, Idk but they jump right on that sucker and buzz right under my stands.
I also mow a few yard around the base of large oaks near my treestands. They seem to appreciate the bare ground and easy to locate acorns. I appreciate getting in and out of the area much more quietly. Just sayin.

no more getting the cuff of my pants wet (even if i tuck them into my boots they can fall out), no more getting your cuff hung up on sticks on the ground tripping you up, and its something the old timers did a lot so I like the tradition of it. Its actually called stagged pants. The loggers in the early 1900's did it because they didn't want their cleats to get caught on their cuff making them fall off large trees .

I had herd that if you leave a layer of snow on a roof it will act like insulation(always being 32 degrees no matter how cold the outside is.

Giveaway; Ash...Ash borer beetles. I used to be in pest control. I'm also a local Pennsylvania boy...well...not so local. In the northeast in the Pocono Mountains. Love your channel. I subbed you a little while back. BTW. I like longer videos. One a week or twice a month is great. Maybe I'll get out to check out your school this year. Thanks, Doug

When you chose the gear you took to Patagonia, how far in advance, of knowing where, did you get to choose/decide what you were taking?

I love videos! I don’t know your area , but have you ever ran into a bear anywhere you have been? Camping/hiking?? I was just curious if you did and what you should do? Some people pack when they camp or hike just because if a bear or cougar appears. I watch videos where people are camping/ hiking and run into a bear. I live in Portland Oregon so we don’t have bears the places I go, but there are bears in different parts of Oregon. I went camping in Joseph Oregon near Idaho that’s bear country but never saw any. Anyways I went longer then I wanted lol . I’d love to go to your school in the future.
