That little aluminum pot at 6:15, is like the lunchbox that I had to carry in kindergarten, in ‘42. I hated that stupid lunchbox! It was dorky, the lid would fall off, things popped out, and it became even more dorky. I hope your little pot works better for you.

I love that you mention Dick. I saw alone in the wilderness on PBS as a teenager and I was HOOKED. Begged my parents to donate so we could get the dvd 😂, thankfully they humored me. I still have the dvd in my collection.

For your cabin, maybe you can make a table that can turn into a bed, if needed. So you only turn it into a bed if you have more people around. Also maybe you can put some hooks in the wall, and put up a few hammocks if needed. Thanks for teaching me so much! Hugs!

Love this!!!! That little pot is part of a BSA mess kit. When complete it also comes with a cup, a frying pan and bowl. I have one and keep it loaded with emergency fire starting gear. Great vid. Love the "simple sitting on the porch" feel to this! Keep 'em coming!! Not every vid needs teaching!!

Pic out your sleep wall and build a series of FOLD DOWN bunk beds. Usually one wall will do for this. Not sleeping fold them up and you instantly have more space to move about the cabin. A simple mattress you can make yourself and store in a outside utility box will keep them clean and neat. Watch some of the TINY HOUSE TV shows. Lots of great ideas to maximize living space and comfort. A loft bed is OK but then you have the comebersom ladder to live with . Cabin outside looks great. My son and I build a bug out simple cabin in the woods behind his house in NC. We used nothing but scavenged wooden pallets and a chop saw. Came out great!!!

Inside the cabin- Either get a bunch of heavy duty hooks (like the ones you'd use inside of a garage or shed for hanging ladders or bikes) and screw those into the walls... Or drill some holes into the studs, big enough to pass a strap through. And then... ready for this?... set up hammocks! Get a small folding step stool for access to the "top bunk" (hammock). And they can be easily moved out of the way during the day. Add a folding table, a few camp chairs, etc...
And there ya go! It can be set up however it needs to be, depending on how many people are staying there at any particular time.

In the Outer Hebrides a couple of hours off the west coast of Scotland among other places the 'black houses' had stone walls with an earth cavity fill sandwich and a grass roof rethatched every year with a hole in the roof over a central peat fire on the floor filling the rafters with smoke where they hung the herring. But you asked about ideas for the furnishing of your cabin. The box bed was I think like a bunk bed built into the wall with a curtained side facing the fire. The elderly had armchairs facing the fire that had a parabolic curve to the back and a hood effecting the very collection of heat of which you speak and a perfect seal from draughts from behind. I guess all this can be found on-line. Ive been building a shelter with some of these things in mind that is two triangular shelters kind of facing one another so two tripods one leg of each of which is the ridge of that shelter but they face slightly towards the fire and out over the loch so their back edges are one lo-ong straight line. The back legs of their A frames are touching at ground level but their ridge poles meet and a longer pole goes from the middle of the back line to the meeting of the ridge poles plus a lot so it can nearly hang a cooking pot over the fire! If this pole had its thin end up in the air and was bent over the fire I've been thinking of exactly what you've been saying about the parabolic reflectors. All I need to do is cover it all with brash and then line it all with mylar - to have a palace! The Lord bless you!

Maybe install ring hooks in the walls where you can hang hammocks. It will save some space for stove, and tables?

For sleeping in a wall tent, what about folding beds like you get in hotels? ( or used to, I haven't been in a hotel in probably 25 years. ) something you can fold up and put on one side of the tent. If you don't want to use cots, that is the best option I can think of. It's not very practical if you have to pack in and out but if you can drive to the tent, should be fine.
On a side note, I love these videos!! I have hunted and fished and spent a great deal of my life, in or around the woods. Like you say, another tool in the toolbox! You can never learn too much!! I love watching anything like this, please keep em coming!!!
Stay safe and healthy, cheers!! that goes for every body :)

A gear loft would be great. I also recommend hammock hooks about 3 feet apart. You could then hang as many hammocks as you need and quickly take down one side and store them on the opposite wall during the daytime.

What about a U-shaped bed/couch setup in the one corner along the wall? You could have storage underneath and move a table in when eating. Negates the need for comfy seats, dining chairs, etc. And the "beds" are a permanent fixture. Then utilise the loft area for extra storage?

Hi from a South African living Switzerland ..
    Nice Posting .. thanks 👍.
We are still sitting with a total Fire Ban in our forests .. our local constabulary having a limited sense of humour with offenders and eye-watering fines being the order of the day.
'Starter Gear' .. As a teenager in the 60's, my Cook Kit was 'foraged' from the kitchen. A battered aluminium frying pan with a metal handle did service until well into the late 70's.
For beginners, military surplus is a good way to go. I still use kit that was part of my military issue almost 50 years ago. A canvas A-Frame Pup Tent is still somewhere in a cupboard .. since passed onto the kids and now who knows next.
Before one has decided 'where one is going', 'going cheap-ish' for starters and then investing in good quality gear is a choice (my Optimus 8R Hunter Benzine Stove is in it's 40's, and still in use).
Good fortune with the cabin. Part of the fun is in the planning and execution 😊.
Take care .. stay safe ..

Sorry to bother you again, but wood storage idea... Our old house growing up dad built a wood box next to the fireplace with a door in the back of it that opened to the outside, do he could refill it from the outside without carrying all the wood through the house and making mom mad about the mess. You could keep a wood stack against the outside of the cabin next to the fireplace with an awning over it to help keep it dry, next to the wood box which you could refill from the outside. I liked the one guys comment on having a hammock hang... Around the fireplace? Dude! That's the move! Also, fyi... "App-a-latch-ah".

I used to work on the roads in a public works (43+ years). I wore tidings for 15 or 20 years and had them wear out in about 6 to 8 months. I ended up getting Wolverine boots and still wear them daily! I get them with thinsulate so they're great in summer or winter. They are waterproof (as much as they can be), but dry out quickly gortex if I remember correctly). And they are less than half the weight of red wings. I wear them year round. (Even got a new pair for "Sunday go to meetin'!) 😄 Thanks for your great video library on youtube! I hope to attend one of your classes soon.

I noticed this video is over 2 yes old but wasn’t sure if you figured out your living quarters issue. An idea I had was to TL look at what campers/trailers do with their tight quarters. I had a trailer in which the table lowered down to match up with the frame of the benches then then cushions you sat on and up against were used as a mattress. Then the top bunk lowered down as well for my kids to sleep on with an inflatable mattress. We slept 4 in the tight area, but when we weren’t sleeping, the beds were put up so we could eat our meals/do activities at the table with plenty of room.

We used to keep a mattress under our bunk bed when we were kids, and we would slide it out at night to sleep three.
One of my friends in college bolted two hooks into his walls to hang a hammock from. That would get you to four, and it doubles as hooks you can hang stuff from when not sleeping.
Also, for what it’s worth, I prefer the top bunk.

Loft is claustrophobic if not enough room. Stove placement would have to be permanent I assume. Fold down work bench. Compartment under the floor with a buried metal truck tool box acts as fridge and keeps critters out if you bury it up to the lid. Use Loft to store mattresses and take out as many as needed for the night. Install heavy duty screw eyes placed in studs for hammocks or used to hang other stuff from.

Hammocks. Or navy style flip up (fold down) cots (hammock cots). Gives you space, then flip it down when it's time for bed. Storage up high. Partial loft is cool too.... but way too hot in the summer for anyone but kids (tho gear could sto in loft if flip down beds below)

Disc-o-bed cots might be an option since they stack to make bunks and can be taken down and packed away fairly easily plus you can get 7 inch extenders if you need more room in between the beds

  • @StoneE4
    @StoneE4 4 роки тому

Cabin sleeping situation - Reinforce the walls so they can support multiple hammocks. If you take them down during the day and you won't lose any cabin space. You could use cots as well. Although, when folded up a cot will take up more room than a folded (stuffed) hammock.

Completely agree about the minimalist approach - all the evidence of bushcraft I see around me is trees with damaged bark, paracord left about, and general mess. Surely bushcraft is about going out and leaving no trace - not going out and leaving no samplings standing. Isn't it about being in nature not going out exploiting her resources?

Have them slot into a holder and toggle down and then pull them off and take them where you need them. Then you pull them down and set them up in front of the cabin or inside it as you need. Thinking of building something like that for my garage/shop.

Depending on the size and shape of your cabin....you could have a rectangular space with a loft for two or three sleeping spots (air mattress size?) accessed by a ladder. Or have a full second floor with a center part cut out for a ladder with two beds on each side. One the main floor one side of the ladder has kitchen and table and the other side storage and bed or chairs or table.

As for the cabin. I like it (what I can see). And your door is outstanding! I was a carpenter for 30 years, and it looked great to me.
If you want more sleeping area, build a deck on the south side. Overflow visitors can bunk on the deck outside. (Maybe a framework for a tarp on top and one side). That way you can still ‘entertain’ inside while the old folks can get to bed early 😎

  • @spfb

Not knowing what kind of square footage you have? I would suggest that if you can put in a small loft, if space allows for it. If for nothing else to store extra gear! I would also suggest the folding down Bunk beds! You could Also position the table against the wall and make it, so that it folds up-and-down out of the way.
If you did the table so that it folds up then maybe you could do 2 beds against the wall that folds up, and have cots for other people? It will all depend on exactly where you're going to place the stove in the cabin to maximize sleeping space and work space on the table.

This was a fun video. I never tried the "Black Diamond" steak, but will now look into it. It "looks" pretty lean, so I wonder if it's tender or tough. I like your tarp.

    Fold down table with two hinged legs. Two piece folding wooded chairs you can cut out of plywood that lay flat when not in use. Double bunk beds, a low folding cot that stores under bottom bunk, Eye bolts to attach your hammock to {not just for outside you know}
place over folding cot if needed. You planning for a wood stove/heater? if so you need fireproofing. Will you insulate the walls and cover with plywood? Make it as you want it, just a few ideas to get you thinking ahead. You know the six P's, Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Good luck.

Yeah, I have that problem here in New Hampshire. I can do it in National Forests, but they are all a couple hours away. So this is a problem for those of us that do not have our own land.

If you have a scissor lift trundel under the bottom bunk you have three beds or you can turn the bottom bunk into a double. don't know how much room you have for number four. Good luck.

High lofts are good since it will stay warmer up there.
