  • สวัสดีค่ะ /sà-wàt-dee kâ/
    Do you know how to say ‘Before’ and ‘After’ in Thai? It is a basic Thai word but important when you want to refer about time and order. Moreover, these words can be used in various ways in a sentence. Today, our lesson will talk about ‘Before’ and ‘After’ as an ‘Adverb of time’ and as a ‘conjunction’ in Thai language.
    • Adverb of time
    Before = ก่อน/gòn/
    After = หลัง/lăng/
    1. Before putting make up on
    ก่อนแต่งหน้า
    /gòn dtàeng nâa/
    After putting make up on
    หลังแต่งหน้า
    /lăng dtàeng nâa/
    2. Before (plastic) surgery
    ก่อนศัลยกรรม
    /gòn săn lá yá gam/
    After (plastic) surgery
    หลังศัลยกรรม
    /lăng săn lá yá gam/
    3. Before getting a haircut
    ก่อนตัดผม
    /gòn dtàt pŏm/
    After getting a haircut
    หลังตัดผม
    /lăng dtàt pŏm/
    4. Before midnight, we have to go home.
    ก่อนเที่ยงคืน เราต้องกลับบ้าน
    /gòn tîang keun rao dtông glàp bâan/
    We shouldn’t go back home after midnight,.
    เราไม่ควรกลับบ้านหลังเที่ยงคืน
    /rao mâi kuan glàp bâan-lăng tîang keun/
    • Conjunction
    Before = ก่อน/gòn/...จะ/jà/
    1. Apologize, before it’s too late.
    ขอโทษซะเถอะ ก่อนมันจะสายเกินไป
    /kŏr tôht sá tùh gòn man jà săai gern bpai/
    2. Get in, before I change my mind
    เข้ามา ก่อนพี่จะเปลี่ยนใจ
    /kâo maa gòn pêe jà bplìan jai/
    3. Nan had learnt English before she went to Canada
    แนนได้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษก่อนจะไปแคนาดา
    /naen dâai rian paa-săa ang-grìt gòn jà bpai kae-naa-daa/
    After = หลังจากที่/lăng jàak têe/
    1. John called me, after I had left
    จอห์นโทรหาผม หลังจากที่ผมออกจากบ้านไปแล้ว
    /jon toh hăa pŏm lăng jàak têe pŏm òk jàak bâan bpai láew/
    2. We went out for a walk, after we had eaten dinner
    เราออกไปเดินเล่น หลังจากที่เรากินอาหารเย็นเสร็จ

    At 14:38, can we say lang jaak tee rao dai* gin aa-haan yen? I am new to Thai language here and I get the idea that the word 'dai' before a verb gives a sense of something that happened in the past, but I'm not sure. Thank you for your video, it's really helpful and practical 🙏🏻🙏🏻

    • @thailessonsbynew

      I would recommend to stick to the meaning rather Grammar tense. If you want to mean you had a chance to do it, yes you can say dâai+ Verb 😊

    In example 12:49 you used ook jaak baan pai laew… ( but baan we use for home like pai kab baan) … in english example “john called me after I had left” … there is not know left for where ? Left for home ? Left for work ? …. How we know??

    • @thailessonsbynew
      @thailessonsbynew  3 роки тому +1

      You are right. In English sentence, it's enough to say just 'had left'
      In this case I just gave a choice how you say if you want to mention left somewhere which is a house as an example.
      If you don't want to mention where you left then can say
      lăng jàak pŏm òk bpai láew
      😊

  • @Pad_See_Ew
    @Pad_See_Ew 4 роки тому

    (falling tone) òk -awk sound means "out" ? "ok-jaak" always means "had left" correct? "sá tùh" is more like a command/emphasis on convincing a bit more than, "sá" which is like a command w emphasis on quickly/fast (the example: to apologize)? Learning/practicing when/where to place particles is on my study list... "sá ... sá tùh" a good start. kap thank you New. 👍📝

    • @thailessonsbynew
      @thailessonsbynew  4 роки тому +2

      ออกจาก = to come out, get out from somewhere. In this example แล้ว(already) would be the word telling you, about tense.
      ซะเถอะ, ซะ very casual particles. To be a command or not also depends on what tones you use when you say them😊

    2 notes~ in before midnight or before dinner etc., "before" is a preposition not an adverb. Also, can you say ก่อนที่ไป USA without จะ?

    Are there Thai translations for the words 'beforehand' and 'afterwards' (or thereafter)? Could you please translate the following sentences:
    1) I graduated in 2010 and joined the army shortly thereafter (or afterwards).
