I really like the combination with cam and detector. There should be more options like this in the U.S. by now. Unfortunately there are so many levels of cams out there. Probably the RD companies are thinking they won't sell too well with the combination option. Someone can buy a cheap cam on its own. I like the fact of one plug into the power socket. The portability also with both in one. If the performance is good enough for this new Cobra I may consider selling the R7..lol The scout though appears to not have directional arrows. 🤔
I'm not trading my R3 for it but yeah this is a awesome concept high quality Radar detectors should have.
Even though I do not speed, I like the idea of a dual device. I currently own a Cobra dash cam and now I want to get the latest and greatest device. Hopefully, after the dust settles from the birth of your child, you'll be able to complete a demo of a working unit now that it went live for sale on Cobra's website. Congrats on the birth of your child, BTW!
Thank you for this synopsis. I found out about the radar on the cobra website and am considering purchasing this as I also was unhappy with the last dash can I got and was not happy with all the extra wires.
I wish uniden would come out with a r3 with built in dash cam. Would be outstanding I bet.

@Chris H I absolutely love mine. Honest God's truth I have a very heavy leadfoot. My husband knows this, he did the research and purchase this. Has yet to let me down. Driving back and forth through the city. Phenomenal. Every Smokey Bear it pointed out. Absolutely every single one. This thing rocks. Absolutely no issues. I love it. From one speedster to another. From one leadfoot to another. It rocks.
With limited real estate available on small car windshields, a combo makes a lot of sense. The design looks pretty cool too. Cobra hasn't had the best rep. for their radar detection, but it's worth a try.
This video is like a yearold. Is this or newer Cobra worth getting?
Totally separate note ... Who else noticed the Vanderhall @ 5:35!? There's a dealer selling those in Chico CA. (And the encourage test drives!) And coincidentally, if you have a Vanderhall, you NEED a radar detector lol!
I do like the styling of the Road Scout. At present, I've an Escort Max 360 which serves my purpose well and have considered adding the M1 Cam, however, I'm wanting a Cam with built-in viewing screen and both front & rear capability - guess I'll keep waiting for now. Thanks for another great review
My rad 450 has been actually okay. Saved me tons but I have gotten tickets. I finally pulled the trigger on the Uniden r3 though so I’m very excited to see the difference

Vortex, why is it a good idea to have the dash cam with your radar detector? I am electronically ignorant. So do u think the Escort and dash cam is better? Guess this is the current trend.
Problem is this would be required to be mounted level. Very rare for a cobra.

Hey brother, guess were local here in Seattle. Anyways picked up a 2019 Tesla Model X last week and wanted to move over my 9500ix but am running into design and mounting location issues since it’s all glass and exposed to anybody looking in and trust me this car gets more attention than my modified BMW’s. But any insight would be appreciated or even if you’d like to film something for us Tesla guys I wouldn’t mind meeting up. Have a great day!

Its odd and different but not unusable - how hard is it to view while driving? I still fail to see why DC and Va have laws against the radar detector use so much so that they have the need to have detector detectors ...seems pointless.

Hello. Great channel love watching your videos. I used to run a V1 most of the time while i was living in Los Angeles. Now I'm in Europe and would love to hear what you think about what radar detector to go with? Thanx.
I kind of like the looks of it, but I don't like the wifi phone integration, but that's only because I believe our eyes should be on the road (Not on your phone). However, I totally get why people would want a phone integration feature. I like that it has both the camera and radar detector, but I don't like the price considering Cobra's past offerings. I may be a little biased because over the years there's been plenty of opportunity for people to poison the well by expressing their feelings towards Cobra. Still, the general public probably won't have feeling either way unless they've previously owned a Cobra product or heard an opinion from someone else. As usual this was a good neutral objective review -- Thank you.
I agree with you, but the WiFi thing is basically designed to take your phone out of the equation. It connects to the cloud and does everything on its own. Alerts are displayed on the screen if the detector. No looking at the phone required. :) If you use Bluetooth with your phone, same thing. Alerts show up on the detector.

I saw pictures of what looked similar to GPS location, and since I find myself at times looking at Waze more than I should, I kind of went with the idea of bad distractions. I appreciate you telling me more about it, so in the future I might actually consider going with something like this.
I'm not impressed with combo radar detectors/dash cams. It reminds me of TV/VCR combo units from the '90s. I think you're better off with separate units. If the detector portion or dash cam portion fails or has issues then you're not completely without as you would be with a combo unit that would need to go in for repair under warranty etc... Also as mentioned in the video when one item is trying to be a solution for multiple purposes they don't tend to excel at either function but just give mediocre results all around.
That's exactly why the Passport IQ failed. Such an excellent concept but as stated, only had mediocre results. In the case of the IQ, it had decent range but the GPS function was so bad it was almost unusable in some situations. If they (whoever they is) made something similar, with Garmin/TomTom quality GPS, range of Uniden R1/R3, auto learn GPS lockout, filtering of the Redenso, with a dash can that looks as good as this or better... That product would sell around 700-1200 and would have the support of many. However, I do not believe that will ever exist in a standalone unit.

This is a bad design. It should look like a dash cam so it would be a stealth detector, otherwise there is ZERO reason to have them integrated together.

Your spot on about it looking like some bizarre pair of binos. I remember when I bought a cobra wayyyyyyy back in the day. I’m not sure that thing ever did anything right. Maybe this one is a different story.
Question: if cobra is sharing technology with Escort, does that mean consumers can expect to see a better quality product with similar features from Escort?

im interested in something like this and would be willing to pay a high price after I figure what I would spend on a radar and camera separately and then mounts and hardwire kit. This one lacks a higher resolution camera and looks so ugly that I just cannot have this thing hanging under my rearview. I hope something new and better is on the way...

What do you mean? It's attached with a screw, not a magnet.
No view screen? Car needs to have active wi-fi to send video to my smartphone, then my phone is tied up with the Cobra. It should have a drop/fold down screen. Especially for that price. Thanks for the review though. I'll wait for the next version - with a screen built in.

It would be nice if the Bluetooth function of the Uniden R3 and R7 allowed for program updates and red light camera data base information to be updated via the Bluetooth function of a cell phone the same way that a dash cam can connect. Just linking up to the detector via a password would be much simpler than downloading files on the computer and trying to download them to the device.
Uploading via the unit to computer takes 1 minute, it is so simple.
Sigh...for some people it is simple. It is one of those things that I struggle with when trying to create a file location and drag the download information into that then try to update my R3. Luckily I work with someone that can do it blindfolded. My home computer is about 5 years old and that may be the issue, but I am being honest that it is a pain for me.

How big of memory card will it take? Also what kind of card is the best for video?
It comes with a 16GB microSD installed. I have put a 128GB in mine, BUT it must be formatted Fat32 which I had to do on my computer first. If you use a preformatted microSD (the way they come new) the max is 32GB. The manufacturer FAQs explain it "Road Scout .. can use up to 32GB cards (For the tech-savvy only: larger than 32GB cards can be used in Road Scout if they are formatted with FAT32)" Also, "Due to constant video recording, we recommend “Class 10” High Endurance cards or better from reputable brands (examples: SanDisk, Western Digital)".

@@kakrohn hi my dear I have. I own it. I have a lead foot, guilty. My husband did the research and purchased this for me. Traveling back and forth between two different cities. Never once has it missed a smokey bear. Absolutely no problems no issues whatsoever. And it has never let me down. I've had it for about 8 months now. It rocks. Although I'll say this the alarms and bells and whistles on it I have to keep it turned down because my goodness does it scare me. The alarm systems and bells and whistles on that thing. Quick loud and my god it works so good.
There's controls for everything. Also an app you can download to your phone. I just wanted to brush up and make sure that I'm doing everything right so I'm going through videos. Since this man hasn't truly tested it. I'm out. I want to learn how to retrieve my videos. I haven't gotten really technical and I need to. Hands down this is an awesome product. It's kept me from getting tickets. Thanks to the hubby!!! He nailed it!

Oh man I wish! I've been wanting to ever since it came out, but it keeps getting bumped down the list as higher priority things come up. Sorry about that. There's a bunch of projects I'd love to tackle if I had more time and this is one of them.

Has Anyone had any issues with the Uniden R3?
I’ve had mine just under 2 years and it started acting up a few months ago. Things are freezing up. Volume won’t adjust properly; it makes a weird noise, the mute button on the power cord stopped working. Very disappointed.
Not mine, had it close to 2 years as well. I am gonna be hopping over to the R7 here shortly.
Yes It's Me Thanks for the reply. I’m not sure what’s going on. I’m wondering if it could be the power cord? I was hoping to get another 12 months out of it before picking up the R7. I have the V1 and it’s good, but it goes off all the time on X band and K band which is not what LEO’s use where I live. Wish I could disable those two frequencies. Ka is just about what gets used where I live with some infrequent laser. I thought about picking up the Escort Max360c, but I just don’t know.

Joe Rogan I haven’t, but do you think that could cause the buttons not to work and it making strange noises? It just started happening a few months ago. I can’t imagine after it working fine for nearly 18 months that it could be an update issue.

Horses for courses. It’s all a matter of picking the proper tool for the job. That’s like saying a truck is a waste of money because it can’t outrun a Ferrari on a race track. Pick the right tool for the job.

Cobra has come up with some cool designs in the past. I loved the “Stealth” model from the early 90s but they have lost their imagination in the last 10-15yrs.
