Tip for choosing paint via samples if you're overwhelmed by choices: 1) Think of what color you want (for example, off-white) 2) Look up the top 5-10 paint shades in that color 3) Get the paper swatches for all of them 4) Hold them up around your room and make sure to compare them to your furniture and permanent fixtures 5) Narrow them down to 2-3 top choices 6) Either buy small paint sample pots or larger painted sample sheets (for example, Samplize or Benjamin Moore) 7) Compare them to everything in your home again, at different times of day, and in different lighting 8) Choose!

Here’s a great tip…. (I’m also a designer)… get a few foam boards from a dollar store, cut them in half and paint your swatches on those, stick them on the walls, this way you won’t have to paint the wall. Write the color, brand etc. on the back and file them away. Later when you’ve accumulated many of those, you can pull them out and use them for clients homes or for another room in your own house.
You’re totally right about picking the paint color last… but we’re totally not doing that. 90% of our current furniture (10+ years of renter chic) doesn’t suit our new place, but we can’t afford to replace it all at once. Nor do we want to. It’ll be years before we have all the new pieces selected. So… we’re painting and wallpapering now. Guess we’ll redo it later if the colors no longer work!

Here for the use of scale and asymmetry!!😊 While my OCD (diagnosed, not just self proclaimed) gravitates towards symmetry, I've realized that symmetrical spaces don't look quite right. They're too "matchy", too repetitive. Symmetry isn't the same as having visual balance!! If you have something on the left, like a big table, add something to the right, like an ottoman, sculpture, etc, or multiple objects that give the visual balance to the large object. The same goes with scale, too many small objects looks cluttered, too many large objects make the place look cramped, or tight. You have to have both, so the scale of each has a place to stand out against something else. Oh, and i don't think anyone will ever be as LeChic as Albert!🥰
Yes! Thank you! I work in the paint department at a hardware store, I tell people all the time to tape the color cards that you’re interested in to the wall and observe them throughout the day or a couple of days. Then when you have it narrowed down to a couple, get samples and test them on all four walls and near any windows you might have. They cover about 15 ft.²…if you’re painting anyway, go nuts!! All of your colors are approximately the same value and intensity, they’ll get covered up just fine by whatever paint you buy. It’s better to spend some money on samples and the time to choose wisely than to hate the color you’ve chosen and potentially have to do it again.
My mistake that was on the list is in regards to scale. I purchased a beautiful sideboard to use as an entertainment/ media console. It works great to hide all the kid electronics and cords. It is just a bit too large visually for the space. I'm probably the only person on earth that is bothered by it, but it does drive me nuts. I can't afford to replace it at the moment, so I live with it as a reminder for the next time I purchase furniture.
I'm so glad to learn about layering. I've always been interested in interior design, but I have the most difficulty pulling everything together in the end. Great tip about choosing paint color last! Never realized that limited my choices; I always thought the opposite more practically: if you paint first in an empty room, it will save all furniture and accessories from being ruined in the painting process. Ha! That's why YOU'RE the professional, Garrett! Thank you kindly!
One of my mistakes - buying every piece of upholstered furniture in velvet. High quality velvet - but still - velvet. In a previous video, you mentioned how we must mix textures, so I bought a light blue leather chair for the living room and it instantly made a huge difference.
Omg, girl, you live your luxurious velvet life!!! Leather and velvet are my two favorite upholstery fabrics, and they look so sumptuous together! I've always wanted to have a home with dark charcoal colored walls with black leather and velvet furniture in jewel tones! 🥰 Too bad my existence is covered in cat hair (and i won't give that up yet😸) so velvet is a distant dream for the moment. 😂 You enjoy yourself on the velvet furniture for me, ok?
@@ophilianecr I hope you get your wish someday! I have light colored walls, but the rest of my living room is how you describe. I have a dark plum colored velvet sofa, and vintage jewel tone glass table lamps - one cranberry glass, one green glass, and one blue glass. My rug is in distressed/faded jewel tones. I'm definitely not afraid of color.
Congratulations on your imminent 50K subscribers! You're fun, informative, charming, and you don't pull any punches! Great analysis of what we designers would NEVER, EVER do! And I loved your last comment.... for all those who THINK they're designers! Yes.... take a BIG hint from Garrett and understand and apply the basic elements that make any space work beautifully!
Another thing that I love you talked about is a symmetry I also think that that makes a home or living room space feel very curated and different which I always love to use in my spaces
I decided my family room should be a nice yellow and picked the color with a swatch. I’m going to preface this by saying I’m a nurse. So, imagine how I felt when I started at, I cutting it in and stood back to look at it and realized with the lighting in the room that my “ lovely” yellow looked just like a urine sample! Needless to say, I picked an entirely different yellow (which I love). I had no idea how tricky yellows were until then!
Ugh..I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you found a color you ultimately loved. It's amazing how different a color can look on our walls and ceilings versus the paint swatch. Lightening and texture play such important roles in how a color will appear in a space, or sometimes I see a color on a swatch I love, and then when I test it on walls I don't like it.
I was guilty with the bed one. I moved to my apartment and bought an airbed for the meantime. My back really hurts because I have scoliosis. 😫 Then after 1 week of sleeping on it, I bought a good mattress. I didn’t care about the price and invested on it. Now, I have a good night sleep and it’s the best investment for me EVER! Great tips btw, Garrett. 😊
Thanks for sharing!! I agree, a great mattress is a core essential. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)

Very interesting tip on asymmetry. That’s going to be a hard habit to break lol. I have really benefitted from picking paint colors last, it’s fun to be inspired by a beautiful piece
Hi Carrie! Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it. The only thing that matters is what you enjoy. Please take a moment to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
My biggest design mistake was letting someone else decorate my home without my input. My mother's wedding gift was decorating my living room. We drove to Pierre Deux where she pored over swatches and assessed chairs, sofas, and sconces. In a few hours, I had all the fixings for a perfect French Country hang-out. It just wasn't me. Eventually, I started exploring ways to mix in modern elements. For example, I hung an abstract painting above the sofa and added a minimalist coffee table. I think the eclectic look suits the room nicely.
In our area there are neighborhoods of "box" ranches - the 3 br. 1 bath homes built in the 1950s. Basically square, small kitchens and bathrooms. Someday, ideas from you on how to make these lookalike homes have some style would be appreciated.
Love this, Garrett!!! You are SO creative in picking your topics and so informative with your tips!!! I never knew to pick my paint color last, so I will DEFINITELY do that next time! I'd LOVE to hear more about what you look for when blending newer and vintage pieces to get that LeChic look. My mistake? Trying to go with all one look -- like farmhouse -- when my style and key pieces are much more transitional. Shame on me! Cheers on your 50K subscribers! You are just the best, Garrett, and you deserve every success!!! 🌻💙🌻 Colleen
I’m so happy to hear you say don’t cheap out on furnitures that get so much use of, those are my leather sectional in the living room and our beds, purchase justified 😻 love you Garrett!😘😘😘
Yay! Very smart to buy high quality especially for furniture that gets regular use. Thanks for watching, and supporting the channel by subscribing! 🌸🌸🌸😊😊😊
The difference between you and YT designer wannabes is so apparent. You are the REAL DEAL! Congrats on the success of your channel. Smooches to all your pooches.
Excellent. A lot of designers repeat things over and over. I was expecting that here too, but you surprised me. There were other things you talked about, like asymmetry.
What you said about the weight and quality of major pieces is so true. Put your money into things that separate you from the ground, whether it be chairs/sofas, beds, shoes or car tires. In the long run, it plays dividends.
You definitely should have more viewers! My biggest mistake was listening to my husband and my mom when choosing artwork that should go above my sofa. The one they chose was too small in the end. How did I fix it you ask? I made my own artwork, it is now obnoxiously huge in scale and I freaking love it! 😁😁
I have a bulldog beagle mix! The coolest dog. He lost his eye to cancer, overcome, now he has cancer again. And when you bring Albert on! It gives me hope! Thank you so much.
Sorry to hear that April! We will certainly be thinking of him, and hoping for the best. I know you will do all you can for your pup. Albert is a fighter. He went through so much. Allot of people couldn't have made it through the circumstance he did, and came out so in tact and still having a zeal for life, and trusting people.
Question for your Q&A: When entering overnight guests, how do you make essentials convenient, but still look good. For example: an extra roll of toilet paper, or air freshener in the bathroom? Thanks Garrett.
Marianne, i think you might be overthinking the air freshener. You can't expect everything in your house to be "perfectly aesthetic". Our homes are not always going to be "magazine ready". Perhaps instead of the aerosol cans, opt for a nice looking scent diffuser, an electric one with a timer, or those "poopourri" sprays that you can transfer to aesthetic containers?? As far as the extras like toilet paper and towels, myself and my MIL use aesthetic arrangements and matching storage containers. I use decorative boxes in my home color scheme to store TP and rolled towels in another. My MIL uses wicker or jute baskets in a rolly cart for her extra TP, towels and decorative soaps, bath bombs and salts and a bowl of poupourri. She also "hides" the air freshener behind the basket so it's not obvious. My air freshener lives in the cabinet, easily accessible, but put away.
I have a ceramic decorative bowl that holds a selection of travel size items (a lot of hotel shampoos lol), new tooth brush, tp, small bootle of poopperia, washcloth and a little welcome sign hanging from it. I always tell our guest they r welcome to take anything they want. Once they leave I refill it and put the filled bowl in bag and put in another area. When they come I just put it on the bathroom counter they will be using..super easy and fun.
I really dislike air fresheners as they usually have an artificial scent which gives me a headache. Just leave a pretty box of matches out to light as needed. I ran a piece of ribbon through mine and hung it on the door handle.
I am in love with that luscious plum color in the bedroom you showed. Speaking of luscious…BABY ALBERT ❤️🥰. Looking forward to the Q&A and congratulations on the upcoming 50,000 subscribers🎊
My mistake was choosing high glossy wood floors. They are a pain to keep clean and dusted. Its like having a black car you see every smudge and you have to habitually sweep/dust and mop it...never again...I haven't fixed it yet...not sure what wooden floor will be good to put in or if I should just carpet the house....Oh an NEVER put marble in front entry. I saw it in a house and made my husband install it. I can't tell you how many times i have slipped and fallen on a raining day...DONT DO IT...lol
A big mistake I made was buying some furniture, without measuring the space and deciding what will fit first. Showrooms are big, so the furniture looks small in them. But can be too large for your space when you get it home. Always carry dimensions and work out a floor plan before you buy. So you know if it will be the right scale for the room
I love your common sense mixed with such a vast knowledge of interior design. We don’t all live in huge houses and have a large budget. You teach us how to use what we have.
I understand. It’s not always easy to buy great quality. I’ve seen people get beautiful top quality pieces resale as an alternative to lesser quality brand new items 😊😊😊
Thank you Garrett for being both glamorous and practical. And for having good advice for your viewers that have smaller budgets. Your dogs are adorable too
New subscriber here!! My husband and I just bought a 120 year old Victorian and I will definitely be taking inspiration from your mix of classic and modern design! Love all your videos!! Please do how to repurpose a dining room if you don't use/need one ( Have a large kitchen, less formal living etc.) What are some good ideas to repurpose the space? Thank you for considering the topic!
Interesting problem. I have a spare bedroom that's currently used mostly for storing paints, trim and tools while I redecorate the rest of the house. Not sure what I'll use it for when I'm done. It's small and through the north-facing window you see my garbage bins and a shed. If I don't make a decision, it will probably be used for storage permanently.
New subscriber from Brunei 🇧🇳 here. Very glad your videos popped up in the recommended ones. Enjoying your very practical advice with great reasoning without being too OTT/annoying like many others out there. Keep up the fabulous work!
Your last idea about appreciating the existing features of a room like the windows got me thinking. I never liked my window frames (1980s) as they don’t fit in with the building (late 1930s). But I do really appreciate the changing light at different times of year and how far the sunlight penetrates in winter. I’m going give them a bit more design consideration!
My best advice is measure measure measure and don't overfill your space with decor and furniture. It's so tempting. I have to remind myself all the time 🤣
Hello 👋 my husband who is an artist and knows his colors well kept telling me you just can’t start painting a room a particular color without taking into consideration lighting etc…the color I wanted was that blue gray. OMG 😳 I hated the color on the wall it looked like a florescent blue definitely not what I was looking for and my husband gloated in his I told you so. long story short he chose the colors for the interior of the house and I love it. Great video your such a great teacher you make everything make sense for some of us that are interior design challenged! You will reach a million subscribers you’ll see. Albert is adorable as usual 😊
"Chintzie" my favorite Southern word! I do declare, you are such a Southern Belle! Loved this video! I made the paint mistake and ended up with a room that, while striking, was WAY too dark. Garrett- Hang in there! I I feel like 50K is just the start of a soon to be 5 mil! You rock! Great, practical advice with a little sass! LOVE it!
Congrats on closing in on 50k! I’ve totally done the paint color thing for our new house living room & entryway, but in my defense we already owned a great burnt orange couch & I needed a paint color that would work well with our extensive unpainted Craftsman trim/woodwork (the baseboards are almost 12 inches high!). We fell in love with the look of a darker emerald green & then I loved the way gold & brass light fixtures contrasted with the color we chose.
Hey Garret! I really appreciate the time and effort you put in these videos! It really shows! When we bought our sofas.. I had NO idea how to arrange the room and I put the TV in front of the window. Luckily, a family member helped me out to move the tv and now the room looks great. Wonderful content, keep it up!
I love seeing Albert. He's so sweet and you are sweet with him. Thank you for another great video. I agree that it is best to paint last but would like tips on how to decorate around an existing wall color, for those of us who have to or choose to live with the existing wall color.
It’s so refreshing to finally hear someone speaking out against the perceived ‘wisdom’ of hanging your artwork at eye level. For starters, in sitting rooms, people are usually sitting, not standing, but presumably they aren’t suggesting you hang all your art just above waist height! I think you’re absolutely right, you have to take the architecture into account. Our house (in the Mediterranean) has very high, sloping ceilings, so we have artwork, mirrors etc. at varying heights - it would look weird otherwise. By the way, I was rather taken aback to hear you suggest that we should include a cemetery in our homes! Took me a minute or so to realise what you were actually saying 😂
Always look forward to your videos! You have some of the most solid advice I’ve seen on interior design UA-cam. I love how you make design seem so approachable and accessible no matter what your design styles are. I also very much appreciate that you lean towards traditional and classic design like myself because I feel it can be hard to find people on here who aren’t into the overly modern/MCM look which is gorgeous, but I LOVE classic/traditional design and just don’t see enough love for it! Also as always, Albert is the best thing ever and I just love him so much. 😭❤️

My breakfast area chairs are not comfortable. That is the first thing I will look to change when I know where I'm going to move. Thank you for always giving us so much useful content!!! 😘
Thanks so much! Sounds great.

.......Garrett reminds me of someone, when he kept sayin', ''I would, NEV-ER!!!'' throughout the video.......
been watchin you and the furry three some since arround 5k, and so glad your channel is getting the deserved recognition!! xx
Thanks so much, and thank you for your support! I truly appreciate it.

Very interesting tip on asymmetry. That’s going to be a hard habit to break lol. I have really benefitted from picking paint colors last, it’s fun to be inspired by a beautiful piece

I'm in UK, and the trend here is pink , grey , and mirror furniture, I hate it, I'm more for rustic pieces. Xx
I think the eclectic look suits the room nicely.
always useful. Using an already existing goal point is genius 💕
🤗🤗🤗
In our area there are neighborhoods of "box" ranches - the 3 br. 1 bath homes built in the 1950s. Basically square, small kitchens and
bathrooms.
🌻💙🌻 Colleen
Thanks so much Colleen! Greatly appreciated! 😊😊😊
Thanks so much for your lovely comment!

Dark window shades 😮
Excellent. A lot of designers repeat things over and over. I was expecting that here too, but you surprised me. There were other things you talked about, like asymmetry.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed. :)
I just happened on your channel and I am very impressed with your views on kitchens and open concept. I instantly subscribed to your channel.
Awesome! Thank you! Welcome to the channel Toni. It's great to have you as part of our very valued world class subscriber family!
@@GarrettLeChic thank you again!
@@aprilbean5561 Absolutely!🐶🐶🐶
I just love the work of Tarkary - that looks like a fabulous collection you gave a peek into!
Thanks so much Eileen! Agreed, he was an amazing artist, and his works will live on for ages. :)
Question for your Q&A:
When entering overnight guests, how do you make essentials convenient, but still look good.
For example: an extra roll of toilet paper, or air freshener in the bathroom?
Thanks Garrett.
Baskets! Perfect for hiding toilet paper and air freshener. Cheap to buy.
Thanks so much Gloria!😊😊😊
Thank you Albert for making an appearance!!
🐶🐶🐶
It happened wow 50k fab!!! I'm Aussie time so happy for you all.
Thanks so much Julie! I truly appreciate your support. :)
Congratulations! 50,000 👏👏👏
Thank you! 😃
I'm learning so much from you. CONGRATULATIONS your channel. Designing a new home is hard. ❤️
Thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying our channel, and finding the videos helpful. :)
Sometimes Garret I would love to buy great quality but not always in my budget , I totally get it,
I understand. It’s not always easy to buy great quality. I’ve seen people get beautiful top quality pieces resale as an alternative to lesser quality brand new items 😊😊😊
Thank you Garrett for being both glamorous and practical. And for having good advice for your viewers that have smaller budgets. Your dogs are adorable too
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Diane! 🐶🐶🐶
Excellent points Garett! Thank you as always! On to the next 50,000!

New subscriber here!! My husband and I just bought a 120 year old Victorian and I will definitely be taking inspiration from your mix of classic and modern design! Personally, I think that “regency” needs to be the NEXT BIG trend. It’s stunning! Thanks for all of your great content and sending my love to your fur babies.

Another great video! What if your house doesn’t have any architectural uniqueness? Can’t wait for your q&a!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you, great talking about scale, color, asymmetry, mixing modern with vintage, exactly what I prefer!
Glad you enjoyed it!
New subscriber from Brunei 🇧🇳 here. Very glad your videos popped up in the recommended ones. Enjoying your very practical advice with great reasoning without being too OTT/annoying like many others out there. Keep up the fabulous work!
Awesome! Thank you! Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as a part of our subscriber family.
I have to remind myself all the time 🤣
Great tip!
So glad I found this amazing designer. The quality of his content is incredible. His explanations are so clear, and backed so well with photos. Wow!

Thanks for even more great tips and information.
Thanks for your lovely comments, and for sharing! I appreciate your regular support very much. It means a great deal!😊😊

Hi Albert! Great video Garrett!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I made the paint mistake and ended up with a room that, while striking, was WAY too dark. Garrett- Hang in there! I I feel like 50K is just the start of a soon to be 5 mil! You rock! Great, practical advice with a little sass! LOVE it!
Thanks so much! We truly appreciate your support. Great things are happening, and yes, we agree the millions of awesome subscribers will happen. :)
This has the best explanation of scale I have ever heard. Thank you.
Yay! Glad you enjoyed Meg!🐶🐶🐶
Thanks so much Kiersten! Sounds great!
😊😊😊
Thank you 🌷🌷🌷

Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful.
Thanks so much Kay!
Congratulations on 50k 🎉🎁🎊
Thanks so much Erica! Stay cool. It’s hot here too. 😩
Thanks you so much for your lovely comment Ashley Rose! It means a great deal to me. I’m so glad you are part of our channel family, and that you are enjoying the content!😁😁🐶🐶🐶
All points are good and they are different from other designers. Well done! My biggest mistake is using the true white paint color and I correct it with off white.
Thanks for sharing!
