Can I love you any more ? Omgggg you're such an amazing human being!! This video needs to be out here in these streets. Too many bullies on UA-cam and I am happy you said what you said because people are too rude out here. On another note why is Albert sooooooo cute!!!! I love how you are authentic in every aspect of your life. I love how much you love all ypur dogs and you show them off and you dont care what anyone else thinks about them. You're not a snob even though you're learned and fancy and sophisticated enough to be a snob. You validate everyone else's personality and style and offer common sense design related advice to help improve their spaces . That's what makes you a real designer. You know you're my favorite person on here and I can go on for dayyyssss🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Ps I love your fancy house and you're robbing me by not showing me enough of it. Can't wait to see more videos of what you're doing with your space. Also in my mind you're my best friend🤣🤣🤣🤣
I enjoyed this video. I’m also tired of they hyper consumerism and every one’s home looks the same. I actually unsubscribed from a few design enthusiasts channels because of this. My unpopular design opinion is rug on top of carpet. Lol, it’s a no-no but I hate the carpet in my rental and I can’t remove it so I covered it up with a beautiful rug. 😂
Agreed! Rugs over carpeting are like wearing socks with sandals. Much better ways to bring interest into a space. The biggest reason not to do it though is it’s a known trip hazard where people can and do get hurt. Safety first!😊😊😊
I hear you! Like yeah, preferably I wouldn't want to put a rug on a carpet, but I also wouldn't prefer carpet in the first place. Most renters don't have a choice what floors we get. So yeah, I'm going to put a nice clean pretty rug over an old, dirty carpet that who knows what has happened to.
I love how you’re always so encouraging and have respect for everyone. You’re never snarky, and your passion shines through. I love how you embrace being eco friendly and turn away from consumerism. I’ve learned so much from both your suggestions as I have your attitudes. When I first started my journey I was overwhelmed having nothing and not knowing how to start. Now I can look at things and consider my feelings too. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that good interior design doesn’t just happen. It’s like a living breathing organism that evolves. I embrace that this will be a lifelong project that will reflect me and my personal growth. I also embrace all your tips here! I used to be daunted by the idea of elegant design because I thought it was only a wealthy people thing but you show how it can be done well at several price points. By the way that green is lovely on you. Thank you for another wonderful video ❤️
I couldn’t agree more with you about everything you said on this video. Especially the comments regarding consumerism. I love the idea of curating lovely and meaningful items over time.
The most important sense is the one that feels love, and Albert's love-detecting senses are clearly very sharp, the way he leans in to be cuddled and kissed by his adoring dad. In such a hostile world, it's so lovely to see a vulnerable creature showing so much trust and security in his safe and loving home. Thank you for sharing the beauty of Albert with us; he is absolutely priceless.
My unpopular decorating opinions are: -I can’t stand that dumb karate chop crease that decorators put in the middle of a throw pillow, -I also hate when people turn books around so the spine faces the back. Both of these things are so contrived and unnatural and silly to me.
Totally agree! Just fluff the pillow and make it look comfy. As for the books, how you supposed to choose a book for a leisurely read if you can't see the title or author?
"Realistic" that's one of the (many) reasons I love you so much. Your approach is realistic and you encourage us to be realistic in our homes, and how we live in them, and how we use the space. I appreciate that you touched on the consumerism of design/decor that has just gone haywire in recent years. I think you are an amazing person with so much love in his heart and I'm grateful you share it with us. Thank you again for another awesome video.
My unpopular opinions : I like carpet, I don’t like open-plan houses, I want to use a coffee table for coffee and food instead of as display piece for books, trays and candles! It makes me happy that you talked about mixing styles and different rooms not all having the same style.
When a friend of mine was updating her house she told me she was going to tear out all of the original wood floors. I almost had a heart attack! I asked her if she realized she would be destroying the value of that house, a 120 year old house with original flooring and she was going to tear it out. She reconsidered, and then just had the floors sanded and re-stained. Thank God! They were not cheap flimsy floors, they were oak. When I got down to the wood floors in my house I realize that they were fir and they were in absolutely terrible condition. So I covered them up with vinyl plank flooring.
It’s super interesting, hyper-consumerism has been a major topic of conversation in the BookTube community for the last two years. I’m glad to see this conversation is now making its way into interior design UA-cam as well. Nice job!
I love how realistic your advice is. Without naming names, there are just so many, even here on UA-cam, who kind of push for that overly trendy and lux type of aesthetic that I feel can absolutely encourage waste and makes people feel bad for having or enjoying more traditional styled pieces. Not everyone loves that ultra modern or white on white on white with a touch of off white look. I definitely have a more traditional style similar to you. I love ornate gold frames and mirrors, wing chairs and all that good stuff. Not so crazy about the modern, though I have incorporated a few more modern pieces in such as my black metal and glass coffee table (your favorite, glass table tops LOL) and it looks really nice with my antique wood pieces and topped with some thrifted vintage books and marble coasters. Also as always, though you give GREAT advice, Albert was my most favorite part of the video. He always steals the spotlight when he makes his appearance. ❤️
I learn a lot from this channel and others about design. when I was younger I read a great quote in an architecture magazine that said, “just put things in your home that you love and it will all come together.” My unpopular design opinion is that I hate the all-gray trend. Also I hate that people think that in order to update midcentury furniture, it has to be painted. As we went through the process of selling our house in Anchorage AK, I realized that people seem really spoiled. They want new construction, or they want everything to be updated to the latest trends. For our new home we bought a 1966 time capsule and I’m looking forward to giving it some TLC without ruining its amazing character.
"work with what you have and make the best out of it" thanks, Garrett...best advice ever. There are a lot of homes with "great bones", that just need people willing to take care of them and see the beauty in them to elevate the space. 💗 And being thoughtful about what you want and taking time to source quality items makes all the difference in the world to making a house a home. New isn't always better...and new can be as simple as moving something you already have to a different place in your home to refresh the space, not just buying something to keep up with a trend or with others.
I needed this. Remodeling a kitchen in a 200 year old home and will be matching the floor to the rest of the house, even though it is not on trend. But how often can you find wide plank oak and maple flooring
I totally agree that the green shirt looks great! My husband is a retired military officer and we’ve lived all over the world in our 49 years together. We often had little choice as to what our living spaces would be. It was fun using beloved pieces in different ways as we bounced from place to place. Our mantra was always to purchase the best quality we could afford. Despite the best efforts of moving companies to destroy our household goods, much of our early furniture is still in use in our home. Good quality stands the test of time and can easily be updated with new pillows, throws, reupholstery, or other revisions. My husband replaced the feet of our 49 year old leather sofa and club chair to raise the seat height several inches. It looks so good and is much more comfortable. When I see the items that decorate my home, not only am I reminded of the places in Europe and Asia where we purchased them, but we’re also reminded that home to us is where we are at the moment and where we make beautiful family memories. I love the look of the spaces in your home that we see in your videos, but not wild about the clips of that other designer you admire so much. LOVE the artwork in the background too.
Thanks for this. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate and understand that I am happiest when my home is clean, clutter-free, and filled with the things that make me happy - regardless of what’s in style at the moment. When we moved to a new home last year, I only put things in the rooms that were useful (like, you need a colander!) and/or that I love and/or are meaningful to me in some way. Every room looks breezy yet warm and comfortable, pretty and soothing. I’m done with trends or caring about what’s “in” or “out.” If it makes me happy, that’s all that matters. Thanks for being the ONLY designer I’ve seen on UA-cam that seems to agree! :)
Great points as always. The wood floors in our home are what most design influencers these days would call “orangey”. They certainly aren’t on trend. But we weren’t about to rip them out, especially since they match our 100 yr old chestnut staircase which is NEVER changing so long as we live here.
I love that you are encouraging us to embrace what we are drawn to, regardless of what is trending. Thank you also for reminding us that trends are cyclical & that elevating what you have is doable and environmentally responsible. Your content gives me life ♥️
You always read my mind! I just decided the other day that I've watched my last "Top 10 must haves from This Store!" video. Thanks to these, I fell for the "textured, earthy vessel" hype last year. It was out by the time I got the price sticker off. And the white rooms - I agree, will go out. I think they got popular because three sticks of furniture against a white wall photographs well for social media. In real life it's not that interesting.
I'd go even further: Well made wood floors are a classic, can be spruced up a bit with stain or polish, yes. I'd say the same goes for well made, sturdy wood furniture as well. Wood is made of trees, and nature does not date a home. I'm the person that collects pieces of hardwood furniture from the curbside trash and use them to make furniture legs, stools, small tables, blanket ladders, whatever.
Thanks so much Jeannie Marie! I really appreciate your comment. It means allot! Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
I often like when something I enjoy goes out of style, because they will show up used and the prices will go down. My favorite for this is when wood colors go out of style. Antique pieces will end up being much cheaper and easier to find as everyone gets rid of them. Right now I like oak, and it is lovely that it isn't the "IN" wood at the moment.
Omg THANK you for calling out the consumerism, wastefulness, and empty trend chasing. I follow some other designers on UA-cam and while some of their content is wonderful, I can't deal with the consumerism purchase hauls...really turns me off. My unpopular design opinion is feeling less fussy about scale. I believe it's important to move around the space organically and comfortably, but it's more of an American thing for a coffee table to be the exact perfect size, for example. In Europe if you inherit a beautiful marble coffee table but it's not exactly 16" from the couches...that's OK. I live in the States again and I am still abiding by the EU sensibility...
Unpopular design: I love plants but not in any particular style type, (like boho). I just love plants and I have them near every window. I know some peeps think it’s a bit much, but they are calming. Also, taking care of them makes me happy 😊
I loved the "keeping up with the Joneses" comment. Once you start trying to keep up, you'll always be trying to keep up. No need to start that tail chasing game. Also, you'll spend all your money trying to keep up. Then? You'll be working forever because you have spent your money and not contributed to your retirement.
I think it is really important to save your money and buy something that's of really good quality that will last. Pieces that are good enough that you can leave them to someone when you are gone. That doesn't necessarily mean antiques either. Even if you are on a budget, a couple of good quality pieces is better than a house full of cheap stuff...I guess that's my unpopular opinion. I also don't like green walls, but I've said that before (also unpopular)...but hey, I do me. You do you.
Thank you, Garrett! I needed the reminder. I've been on a buying spree! I need to slow down. And take my time to INVEST and THINK more on each piece. I think one of the reasons I'm redecorating is because I rushed to fill up the space when I bought my home. A lot of the things I came with were cheap. And when I moved in I jumped on the "buy grey everything so it all matches". HATED that. I never leave a single video of yours without a take-a-way. You're very engaging the entire time. But where are the puppies today?
G, you took some people to class. I swear I love your channel for being sooo real and encouraging your subscribers/viewers to be the same. It’s some interior decorating/design content creatures that literally annoy me now after discovering your channel. I truly be in my head like, “Sthu sis you ain’t offering nothing but trends and ideas for me to keep up with people that will never be in my home nor are you truly trying to save me any type of money.” I truly love that you coach everyone to design with their self in mind not social media.
I have been following a few other UA-camrs for a while now. Originally, I was taken in by their style and personality. Lately, however, a few- two in particular- are constantly posting their "hauls" from various department stores. Not just a few items each time- lots of things they don't really need- and DRAMATICALLY changing their style with each season. It is unrelatable for me, unattainable for most, and frankly, the hyper-consumerism leaves a bad taste in my mouth. THANK YOU for this dose of sanity! I made two of my kids (teenager) watch this video after I finished it, and they agreed that it offered a much-needed reminder of how addicting and damaging the type of behavior you address in the video can be. You just became my favorite interior design UA-camr, Garrett. Thanks for posting.
Thanks so much! We love having you as part of our subscriber family. I really don't do haul videos much. I think they were more popular in the darker days of the pandemic. Most of what I buy is curated and not from typical department type stores so it is always harder for me plus I like to do videos on pure interior design and decorating subjects. I realize items can be unattainable for many people that influencers have, and I try to keep that from being in a person's face unless they specifically ask.
Yes the big giant homes that just end up being basic. All those homes look the same. Family with 3 kids in a 3 bedroom house and they say "oh we're building a brand new house" No character no charm just basic.... I live in a 1906 bungalow. Changed it over the years but this last time we renovated, I made sure that it was something that I love. Not trendy. Just looked at styles thru the years and see what stuck around. I redid all my wood floors and I love them. They are original to the home. You can always put s rug down for a new look. ( I love your dogs btw! ) Thanks for your honesty and taste! Love you! Marie🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘😘🤩🤩🤩
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I am loving the soap box you are on. Real wood floors are a treasure, and I can’t imagine replacing them. And we have several antique pieces that I love and refuse to accept that they might be “dated.” Keep preaching on sustainability and anti-consumerism, Garrett - I will be the one shouting Amen. Sláinte mhaith!
Garrett - I rarely comment on you tube videos but have found myself commenting a few times in your channel. We need more thought leaders like you!! Thank you for reminding us that consumerism is not the answer to fulfillment . Whether it’s for decorating or other areas of our lives - being thoughtful and true to ourselves is most important. You just rock. Keep up the great work !! ❤
Thank you so much Brianna for the lovely comment! I truly appreciate you watching, and for your support as part of our amazing subscriber community.😊😊😊
Yes, Professor LeChic! I love that you embrace using what we already have and making it fabulous. I have items from family members that others once snubbed. I refinished or refurbished them and now the snobs are super jealous of my heirlooms. Sorry Honey! Remember when you turned up your nose at Grandpa's 1960s wooden porch chair? Well, I got a lady from Etsy to make some butter-yellow leather cushions, had my hubby strip and stain it mahogany and added a little copper plate on the back with Grandpa's name and birth date on it. Now you're mad that "DJ got the best things from the house"? No, Boo-Boo. DJ had VISION and saw the beauty of Grandpa's favorite place to sit while you had to buy brand new Ikea crap. His chair now has a place of honor in my study and is my most cherished possession. Same with my late mother-in-law's 1990s lighted curio cabinet. People made fun of it because it was full of scary, big-eyed Hummel-esque figurines, but it's Thomasville and has clean lines. I cleared that baby out, switched up the hardware, had it moved to our bedroom and filled it with my purses, scarves and gloves (beautifully arranged, of course). Hubby put the LED light on a timer, so at night, it's the world's prettiest nightlight and I have my own little dust free boutique to window-shop near my dressing table. Once again, the girls seethe with envy... Now they are looking for old curios to do the same. HA! I appreciate you preaching the gospel of originality and sustainability. Can I have an "AMEN!" lol
Thank you Garret! The hyper consumerism we see with some influencers is a turn off! I’ve unfollowed people who were constantly pushing stores and unnecessary items. Also, I loved the advice to not chase new houses but to create your dream home.
Our house (purchased late 2018) had 2 different colors of horrible carpet and 4 layers of peeling linoleum layered on top of each other in the kitchen, + cracked tile in the foyer, so we had to immediately replace our floors! We went with a 5in plank solid oak 3/4 thick boards in a dark chocolate stain to match the existing stained wood windows and crown molding. Having a single flooring running throughout really made the space feel like it flowed and was more open. Some people didn’t agree with our choice and said the trendy thing would be to paint the existing trim and do gray floors. My husband and I are strong believers in NEVER painting wood, so we ignored the trends and did what we liked. You’re the only designer I subscribe to because of your philosophy on embracing personal aesthetics and ecological choices. Thank you & please keep making great videos! (Edit for typo)
A wood floor outdated? LOL! It’s nature, like a plant, or marble. So weird when someone says that, and you called it out, YES. Have enjoyed my Eames recliner with ottoman for 20 years, a timeless classic that’s quality and can enjoy it for at least 20 more. Every word of last segment of advice about curating loved things over time is what I did and advise people too when they compliment mine. Hunting, curating , doing imaginative repurposes for items ( tiny to large) that you really do love is just the best. Hitting the antique malls with a friend for a daytrip is dreamy fun too. Getting things over time equals character for comfortable and beautiful living. Kelly is just the best, isn’t she? Her book on my coffee table is also inspo and decor for those of us wishing we has her talents. And yes, that over consumerism of new everything in every that has no soul that’s mass produced in every store truly hurts my eyes, no matter HOW it’s put together. Quality beats quantity every time. Your video content is always helpful and so interesting . Til next time, Cheers, everyone! 🍷
I hate to say it, but you are preaching to the choir, my friend. Years ago, the interior design advice I received when I bought my first house was, buy what you love and everything will flow together nicely. It has proven so true! I have an extraordinarily (to me) expensive sofa I purchased 20+ years ago. The lines are gorgeous but have never been trendy, so it is classic. I had it recovered a few years ago and it looks as good today as it did when I first got it. In ten years, I'll have it recovered again and it will still be gorgeous. Very little waste, and I still love it. As always, love your style advice.
You are so, so inspiring, and real. I hope many young people with years of home creating ahead of them are taking what you say to heart. It's not right (to this "slightly older" one, ha) that starting out homeowners and renters get over-influenced by content generators who could care less whether someone can afford to "keep up." Unique or cherished items are joys in any age, they see us through the frenzy of life outside the door, and they anchor memories in years to come. Thank you for your thoughtful presentations, and respectful encouragement to be true to ourselves in the most elevated way we can in our circumstances. And oh Albert, "...you move!" He's a delight!
UO: no art is better than boring art. I grew up in a house that had art everywhere you're "supposed" to have it: big oil paintings over the fireplace and sofa, photos in the hall, tiny pictures in the powder room, etc. Nothing that my parents particularly liked, but they bought because it filled a space. When my parentsthey moved out and were trying to sell the house, we took down all the old art, moved around some of my mother's many plants, and oh my goodness the place looked so much more inviting and spacious. It wasn't cluttered before, but it had looked like a doctor's waiting room.
Thanks so much Jessica! I'm glad you are enjoying our channel. Please take a moment if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
On the 'outdated' wood topic-my mum bought an old house in New Zealand several years ago;every single piece of wood was painted and had carpet throughout. When she started renovating they thought they would have to replace the floors, doors, moulding because of their age but found that not only where they in good condition-they where 100% Rimu wood. Lots of old houses used native wood, but as Rimu is now very rare it is protected mostly, super expensive and very rare! Top tip-be careful before removing something or painting over something! A little elbow greese and now the house is SO wonderful-native wood throughout!
Hello Garrett, loved the video. Not sure if it is unpopular or not, but I like my ceilings to be painted a color. My living room is gray on the walls with a wedgewood blue ceiling. I love it and don't care who knows it.
I love how you always talk about the art of design and not just the trends! You always emphasize homes reflecting the owner and not what’s the hottest and newest. Thank you for not being part of the sell sell sell plot hole so many other UA-camrs rely on!
Yay! I’m glad you are enjoying. Thanks for watching. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven’t already, and become a very valued subscriber. 😊😊😊
I only recently discovered your channel, and I’ve been enjoying your unique take on things… you really stand out. Your style of combining old world and modern with things that you love is very inspiring… getting tired of the generic style of decorating you see everywhere. This video made me adore you… I love that your philosophy is “better, not more”!
Wow, thank you! I’m glad you are enjoying the content. Welcome to the channel! Please take a moment if you haven’t already to support the channel by subscribing. I appreciate it.😊😊😊
*Staple Furniture Pieces* . I have had the majority of my large furniture pieces for 20+ years, some even longer. I loved the shape, the wood tone, the detailing or just the timelessness. Some pieces have been "re-freshed" with paint or slipcovers, but the cost savings has been huge, and they tell *My Story* . Textiles are an inexpensive way to re-fresh a space and that's my go-to when I need an updated look.
I immediately subscribed when you did the rant about people online putting others down for having something “dated”. I love your personality and how you explain your stance. And I love when you smooch your puppy’s snoot!!
Also thx for reminding me to trust my self and my own taste vs. falling into trends. It’s ok to mix styles in different rooms , just add some continuity throughout for design flow.
I Love your idea about taking a place with good bones and turning it into something beautiful. I have had the best time turning a rather plain farmhouse into a haven where i love to be. Ive enjoyed turning it into a beautiful home. I like to think we have made this house happy with our changes. It's not the biggest and certainly not the newest. But it is ours.
Garrett!!! Bravo for endorsing individual and unique styles. Totally agree, if there is something one loves in a home, it does not need to be qualified or quantified for anyone else!
Woo hoo - a new video! Thank you! I have two stories of 30-year-old strip oak flooring throughout my house. It gets more beautiful with age and I still love it!
So refreshing to hear you speak about consumerism- I’ve had to stop following some people because they just started making me feel unsatisfied that I didn’t have all these new expensive things they kept showing
Garrett, I love that you have your own voice and your own passionate opinions while not belittling anyone else for theirs. You have a very personal style of delivery and content, which makes you one of the very few on-line decorators I follow. Very much appreciate the doggies too, because in the end, in everything, it's always all about love.
Thank you for the well though out, practical viewpoint! I really never liked doing what everyone else was doing. Appreciate the confirmation 😘 Albert is adorable!!!
I agree with everything you said. My unpopular opinion is I don't like fake farmhouse style in tract houses and I don't like open concept. I enjoy nooks and crannies.
Once again you speak down to earth truth about decorating, the reason I choose to refer to you as my favorite person on utube to follow for advice on decorating. All well put!
You’re absolutely correct. My home makes me happy. I have an antique piece (family heirloom) that I work around. I have a mix of old & new which works for me.
Hey Garrett, thank you for your comment about not trying to put someone down for their choices in style. I had a question on Houzz regarding a style of door I liked, and a ‘pro’ there told me the style was so 70’s and builder grade. Um, no it isn’t. It is simple, and most importantly for me, easy to clean. And in fact, it was a design I saw in a very expensive kitchen….on Houzz! Thank you for understanding and stating that people should make the best of what you can and enjoy your style (6:50). It make me so damn cranky, but I did have a great answer and told them their comment actually hurts them more than it does me…I am not dependant of customers - if I were, I would answer more politely. Love your vids because of you being you!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I truly appreciate it. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and become a very valued subscriber. :)
You’re dining room is lovely, I just love rich, deep blues. I agree about wood flooring: if it’s done well, it can always be sanded & refinished. I inherited an antique Chippendale dining table and buffet… I don’t care if it’s trendy, it holds special memories (but I do change out centerpieces and table-runners). I’m also tired of consumerism, it creates waste.
My unpopular opinion: Give ugly a chance. Sometimes, it’s way more interesting than what’s popular. Example: I have blue carpet in my new home. The house is new to me, but was built in the late 80’s. When I first moved in my first thought was that the ugly blue carpet in the bedrooms had to go, however, after about 8 months here I kinda like it. It’s in good shape and pretty easy to clean, plus it’s given me a chance to do a lot of “tone-on-tone” designing with other shades of blue to make the color look intentional. Hardwood flooring is gorgeous, but I think it’s okay to work with what you have.
Thank you so much for your timely advice! We're renovating a house and it's very tempting to go with the lastest trends instead of taking our time to source quality, timeless pieces that we love. Listening to your design advice validates our decisions. Please keep sharing your design advice and sharing beautiful Albert.
I always watch you channel on my t.v., so I don't normally comment, but I loved what you said regarding elevating what you have instead moving into a new home to.perpetually keep up with the Jones. Very well stated in my opinion.
Thanks so much! I appreciate it. Please don't forget to subscribe and put your notifications on if you haven't already. We have allot of great content that came out, and is coming out. I don't want you to miss any plus we appreciate your support on our first major point on the long road ahead, and that's getting to 100k subscribers. Thanks for watching, and commenting!
My favourite thing to do is shop my own home! I am lucky I have a basement and over the years if we have changed out some decor I have kept the old stuff if I loved it. I can’t tell you how many times it makes it’s next debut lol! I also love just switching around furniture decor and art from one space to another, it makes everything feel fresh! You are so right if you know what you are doing in design the pieces themselves matter less, it is how they are situated in the home
Yes I’m loving your videos and your wise advice about decoration. But seeing your little furry ones being so loved, that is something to admire and that made me connect with you from the heart! From Brazil
Thanks so much Monica! I’m really glad you are enjoying the channel. Our pups are loved beyond belief, and very important members of our family, and the channel. 🐶🐶🐶
See Garrett, this is why I LOVE YOU! Love what you said about working with your house and NOT trying to "keep up with the Jones's"! My house was a basic builder grade but I elevated it by installing molding and changing out the basic lights to something pretty and changing other fixtures and some paint. People I know with larger homes love my house because they don't have the decorating skills I've learned from watching you and others. Lol
Outstanding! Especially on the wood floors, recliners, and consumerism. I became a first-time homeowner 2 years ago at age 64, and am a late comer on design ideas. I am learning a lot from your videos!
I totally agree with you about the wood floors! I also think replacing a lot of stuff all the time is very wasteful and bad for the planet, it just makes me a bit sad and disgusted, but I feel I’m the only one.
The best thing I learned from you is about textures…and mixing and layering them ..love it, as I tend towards a tad minimalist so texture warms things up. Love your pups too (lost my boxer girl a couple weeks ago, but love seeing you snuggle your’s). It’s been rough, but somehow it makes me feel better seeing such love.
I'm so sorry to hear about your pup. They are like family, and it is really hard I know. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and it's nice to see you commenting again. :)
This is the best design video I've ever seen. I'm a new subscriber and I've only watched about 5 of your videos but I'm going to watch a whole lot more. I love everything you raised, but I want to mention wooden floors. I was shocked the first time I ever heard anyone say they were out dated! How can that be? Houses have had wooden floors for centuries! I have a 100 year old farmhouse that's been hacked up, changed and extended many times over the years and it's never going to look anything like the houses some people say I 'should have' but it does look like something that I've carefully curated over the last 20 years. Hardly anything was bought new, things get painted and moved around and sometimes completely repurposed. It's a continual process, a work in progress and it's fun. I can't wait to discover what else you have to say, Thank you,
Thanks so much! It's great to have you as part of our subscriber family. I'm happy to hear you are going to go to the channel and watch more videos. I think you will enjoy them, plus get a great deal of useful information and ideas. :)
Garrett, can I just say first how much I appreciate you as a human being: your authenticity, your love for beauty, your respect for the environment and your tenderness toward Albert to name just a few!!! You encourage and inspire me so much on my interior decorating journey. Your videos are like sitting down with a friend who so graciously mentors you in the art of interior design. Thank you so much!! All of the "unpopular" ideas you shared resonated with me particularly consumerism and enbracing the home you have making it into a space that truly reflects what you love. 💙
I love that colonial round mirror. I love antiques! 99% of antique furniture is made better than 95% of the new furniture available in most stores, unless it's a piece by Baker. I prefer antiques because they are often so well made and solid wood, none of that particle wood crap.
I agree with your video even if I don't always do what you advise. I wish you had been giving advice 30 years ago when I first started furnishing my home. 16 years ago I purchased a recliner for my husband. It looks like a vintage French club chair. The leather of course shows wear which I think makes it look better. It was a good purchase - he likes it and it adds to the look of the room. I am not tearing out my golden oak wood floors from the 1960s. I don't love them but I am trying to work with them ( around them ? ) instead of destroying them.
I really love how you encourage us to elevate things we already own and not go out for the new and shiny. The price that you pay by running behind consumerism is not the one on the tag but the one the future generations will need to pay! Love from India 🇮🇳
I think this is my favorite video you've done! I prefer an eclectic look, curated over a lifetime. (My shiny red oak engineered hardwood floors were legitimately hideous, but we refinished them. Waste not, want not.)
Hello 👋 Right on Garrett, you tell ‘em! You work with what you have. Buying a home because you need more space is great, buying a home because you just want the next pretty house is CRAZY. Your advice is so real, I appreciate it. Thank you 😊
Hi Garrett, I live in country NSW Australia. I bought a 1980s Cape Cod home. It's not country NSW. I have had to embrace the style of house. I previously lived in Sydney by the beach and decorated my apartment in my favourite style - a mash of Hamptons, French provincial, inherited Australian Colonial furniture and my modern artwork. Now I'm in the country, I'm renovating the house, but keeping it very classic, with wainscoting, a new staircase, replacing walll to wall carpet with wooden floors and painting the inside and outside of the house in white-based tones but adding loads of texture in the furnishings. I have a lot of beautiful art pieces and heritage items which I'm putting together gradually. I'm also all about re-use, re-purpose and recycle. And, I absolutely hate people painting antique, or vintage wooden furniture to the latest colour trend. I beeswax all my antique furniture and make it fit! Love your channel, so much of what I've done over the years is classic and I feel as if you validate my overall aesthetic! Thank you!
I love your mahogany furniture. It is so classic and when mixed with modern art, lamps, and comfortable classic furniture it looks very modern and on trend.
I agree with everything you said! So many other commenters here have said what I want to say so I won't repeat it. Just to add that your channel is an oasis in a sea full of design channels that seem to have the main purpose of making us feel bad about ourselves, and our "stuff" and our homes, so that we'll keep acquiring new things to "fix" these manufactured problems. I love your rebellious wisdom! And I look forward to every video. It's good for my mental health as much as for the progress I'm making with my home. And Albert! ❤️ PS - When you decide to publish a book, I'll be on the pre-order list. 😊
So right! Plus when you inherit stuff, dont diss it out yet just because its old! I got the best pair of chairs ever with an inheritance. Yes it needed so much needed love and restoration, but try to find single piece wooden, carved armrest that serves as the feet too. If I have to buy new, I commission a local artist or carpenter (and they dont always cost as much as you might think) Great topic 😁
Just discovered your channel a few days ago and subscribed immediately. What I like about your channel is you go straight to the point, no lengthy intros. You are quite fluent and can share a lot of thoughts in a mouthful. Some tubers just ramble on and on. The doggies are a bonus 😍
I completely agree with every opinion. All white with tons of plants and rattan was a trend in 1988 when I was a kid and my parents were poor. It should not be repeated just because it looks good on camera. It looks cheap and cold. And I hate monochrome black everywhere. Black should be a grounding element, NOT everywhere like you’re living inside a grave. Please consider doing a video on library design. I’m going to turn the impractical office of our new house into a library. I was planning dark wood built ins & sage green until green became a color of the year and now I’m resistant because I always like something, it becomes trendy, and then I hate it.
Your library idea sounds lovely! There are many greens to choose from with those classic bones you're planning. You could put hot pink in there and it'd be timeless!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment and all your support Donna! 😁😁😁
@@GarrettLeChic you're welcomed!!! Have an amazing weekend!!
@@eltinand1321 you as well!
I understand, and I don't judge, but I can't recommend it because it's a known trip hazard that people can and do get hurt from.
Girl me too!😁
so did i
I love how you’re always so encouraging and have respect for everyone.
Thanks for the awesome comment Chelsea!
Well, I mean he is snarky, but also respectful at the same time. Lol.
I couldn’t agree more with you about everything you said on this video. Especially the comments regarding consumerism. I love the idea of curating lovely and meaningful items over time.
Thanks for watching, and supporting our channel by pushing that subscribe button. :)
@@colettegjuka9604 maybe a little but never maliciously…when you’re fabulous like he is it’s an art form
Thanks for your very sweet comment!
🐶🐶🐶
My unpopular decorating opinions are:
-I can’t stand that dumb karate chop crease that decorators put in the middle of a throw pillow,
-I also hate when people turn books around so the spine faces the back.
Both of these things are so contrived and unnatural and silly to me.
Exactly my thoughts. Lol and buying a coffee table book that they don’t even look at
I agree. Every time I see that I want to go "fix it" !
Yes, that karate chop crease is so affected and pointless.
Absolutely agree with you!
Thanks so much Kimberly!😀😀😀
My unpopular opinions : I like carpet, I don’t like open-plan houses, I want to use a coffee table for coffee and food instead of as display piece for books, trays and candles! It makes me happy that you talked about mixing styles and different rooms not all having the same style.
I don’t like open house plans either. My son went for that and now he complains about cooking smells going around the whole house.
@@miranduri yeah that’s a great point about the cooking smells! Nothing like a closed kitchen :)
Thank god for people like you!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment!
I learn a lot from this channel and others about design. when I was younger I read a great quote in an architecture magazine that said, “just put things in your home that you love and it will all come together.”
My unpopular design opinion is that I hate the all-gray trend.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying our vides. Thanks you for supporting the channel by pushing the subscribe button. :)
Sound beautiful.
I just bought a 1934 home with (I think) the original cabinets in the kitchen. What to do?? I feel your pain...good luck! 😀
Good luck with your project.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks so much Sherry!
Your content gives me life ♥️
Thanks so much!
Thank you on the flooring. You always comeback to the classics. Classic always wins. Even seeing wood flooring from 100yrs ago can be so beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'd go even further: Well made wood floors are a classic, can be spruced up a bit with stain or polish, yes. I'd say the same goes for well made, sturdy wood furniture as well. Wood is made of trees, and nature does not date a home.
I'm the person that collects pieces of hardwood furniture from the curbside trash and use them to make furniture legs, stools, small tables, blanket ladders, whatever.

We can all go home after the “fancy house” comment because you are speaking FACTS! The lies are no where to be found. Come through!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Unpopular design: I love plants but not in any particular style type, (like boho). I just love plants and I have them near every window. I know some peeps think it’s a bit much, but they are calming. Also, taking care of them makes me happy 😊
Thanks for sharing! Thank you for watching, and supporting the channel by pushing that subscribe button. :)
I love the way you express your views while still respecting other people’s choices. There’s a real talent in maintaining that balance.
I’m being myself. Real without being judgmental. I give my opinions and I respect other peoples’ as well.
😊😊✨✨
I agree with every thing you listed. When I visit someone I want to see their personality, not a mini Homegoods store.
Thanks so much. Albert was in the video lol. Now they are hanging out probably discussing what they want for dinner tonite!
🤣🤣🤣
G, you took some people to class. I swear I love your channel for being sooo real and encouraging your subscribers/viewers to be the same. It’s some interior decorating/design content creatures that literally annoy me now after discovering your channel. I truly be in my head like, “Sthu sis you ain’t offering nothing but trends and ideas for me to keep up with people that will never be in my home nor are you truly trying to save me any type of money.” I truly love that you coach everyone to design with their self in mind not social media.
Thanks so much! I truly appreciate it Angela.

Family with 3 kids in a 3 bedroom house and they say "oh we're building a brand new house"
No character no charm just basic....
( I love your dogs btw! )
Thanks for your honesty and taste!
Love you!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I am loving the soap box you are on. Real wood floors are a treasure, and I can’t imagine replacing them. Sláinte mhaith!
Thanks so much! Happy St. Patrick's Day. :)
Garrett - I rarely comment on you tube videos but have found myself commenting a few times in your channel. We need more thought leaders like you!!
Loved this post! And your creativity
Love your channel and your timeless takes. Beautiful, functional spaces that bring joy are never out of style.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Garret! The hyper consumerism we see with some influencers is a turn off! I’ve unfollowed people who were constantly pushing stores and unnecessary items. Also, I loved the advice to not chase new houses but to create your dream home.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed. :)
Thanks so much for sharing, and for being a part of our very valued subscriber family! :)
A wood floor outdated? LOL! It’s nature, like a plant, or marble. So weird when someone says that, and you called
it out, YES. 🍷
I love what you've said ! It was like exhaling after holding all the "you shoulds" and "shouldn'ts" in too long.
Thanks so much! Hopefully I can help some people that didn't get the great advice you did. :)
Yes, Garret! Preach! No keeping up with the Jones’s. Albert is such a sweet boy 😍
Thanks so much Ashley!
I agree 100% with you about everything all white and also about having to always buy things,I reuse my decor in different ways.
Thanks so much Trish, and thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.

I love that you encourage people being responsible with their renovations and styling and I love that you bring your adorable dogs in the video :)

Honestly, the best thing anyone could add to their home is Albert. Omg love at first sight!!!! What an adorable puppers!!!
I love how you always talk about the art of design and not just the trends! You always emphasize homes reflecting the owner and not what’s the hottest and newest. Thank you for not being part of the sell sell sell plot hole so many other UA-camrs rely on!

Yay! Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel Linds. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family.
I subscribed. Hi, Albert. Love eclectic...My cat is eyeballing that lovely boucle sofa lol.
Yay! Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family!🐈🐈🐈
Thank you, Garret for letting your viewers know it is ok to be oneself. Albert is priceless and I am so in love. ❤️
Thanks so much, and thank you for sharing! :)
Garrett!!! Bravo for endorsing individual and unique styles. Totally agree, if there is something one loves in a home, it does not need to be qualified or quantified for anyone else!
Thanks so much!
Woo hoo - a new video! Thank you! I have two stories of 30-year-old strip oak flooring throughout my house. It gets more beautiful with age and I still love it!
I agree...A beautiful hardwood floor is always beautiful and timeless. More great content Garrett!!
Thanks so much Tiffany!
So refreshing to hear you speak about consumerism- I’ve had to stop following some people because they just started making me feel unsatisfied that I didn’t have all these new expensive things they kept showing
Thanks so much! I’m glad you are enjoying our channel.
Garrett, I love that you have your own voice and your own passionate opinions while not belittling anyone else for theirs. You have a very personal style of delivery and content, which makes you one of the very few on-line decorators I follow. Very much appreciate the doggies too, because in the end, in everything, it's always all about love.
Thanks so much Ingrid!😊😊😊
Thank you for the well though out, practical viewpoint! I really never liked doing what everyone else was doing. Appreciate the confirmation 😘
Albert is adorable!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much 😊
Totally agree with the recliners! I love to be comfortable but why are affordable recliners always so tacky looking
Just gonna say- your artworks are joyful and uplifting.
Thank you🤗
You’re absolutely correct. My home makes me happy. I have an antique piece (family heirloom) that I work around. I have a mix of old & new which works for me.
Thanks so much Diana! That’s the way to do it to create an elevated space. Love it!✨✨✨
Hey Garrett, thank you for your comment about not trying to put someone down for their choices in style.
Thanks so much Ree! Glad you enjoyed.

Hard Yes on consumerism decorating influencers. I love listening to your opinions and ideas! Love to your little Albert.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your timely advice! We're renovating a house and it's very tempting to go with the lastest trends instead of taking our time to source quality, timeless pieces that we love. Listening to your design advice validates our decisions. Please keep sharing your design advice and sharing beautiful Albert.
Thanks so much Kathleen!
Lol
Thanks! Glad you have been enjoying our videos. :)
Outstanding! Especially on the wood floors, recliners, and consumerism. I became a first-time homeowner 2 years ago at age 64, and am a late comer on design ideas. I am learning a lot from your videos!
That is awesome! I’m so glad.😊😊😊
I totally agree with you about the wood floors!
I also think replacing a lot of stuff all the time is very wasteful and bad for the planet, it just makes me a bit sad and disgusted, but I feel I’m the only one.
And when you have talent and taste you can turn most spaces into something beautiful. What I love is seeing the personality. I love decors with souls.
Thanks for the lovely comment Donna! I really appreciate you being part of our subscriber
family. :)
I love wood, especially richly toned wood. Makes me sad that it’s considered “out”.
I think this is my favorite video you've done! I prefer an eclectic look, curated over a lifetime.
(My shiny red oak engineered hardwood floors were legitimately hideous, but we refinished them. Waste not, want not.)
Awesome! Thank you! Please take a moment to support the channel by subscribing if you haven't already. I appreciate it Robin. :)
Hello 👋 Right on Garrett, you tell ‘em! You work with what you have. Buying a home because you need more space is great, buying a home because you just want the next pretty house is CRAZY. Your advice is so real, I appreciate it. Thank you 😊
Thanks 👍
Thank you!
Thanks so much, and thank you for sharing! Please take a moment to support the channel by subscribing. I appreciate it. :)
I love your mahogany furniture. It is so classic and when mixed with modern art, lamps, and comfortable classic furniture it looks very modern and on trend.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Christina! :)
And Albert! ❤️
PS - When you decide to publish a book, I'll be on the pre-order list. 😊
Thanks for all your kindness and support Dodie! 🍀🍀🍀
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying the content. Welcome to the channel!
Thanks so much Katy, and thank you for watching and supporting the channel by pushing that subscribe button! :)

Your library idea sounds lovely! There are many greens to choose from with those classic bones you're planning. You could put hot pink in there and it'd be timeless!
Stressless chairs and couches are AWESOME!!!
11:09 Timelessly YOU. yes!! That is it. Omgee!! You get us LeChic… 💕
