New to pottery and thrilled I found your videos on Amaco layering. You are very generous in explanation of layering and the end results. Can’t wait to do some experimenting.
I really appreciate how you format your vids. To see before and after with comments on earlier trials, thickness of glaze, location on shelf, even how you cooled is sooo helpful. Thank you!
Thankyou for your comment. This was the first time I showed the before and after in the same video. Worried that people would be annoyed by a long video. But there is a lot to say.
Second comment from a new sub. It would be great if you could pop up a pic of the before fire on screen as you unload so we better remember before and after.
Hi Lois!! It was me that suggested you try the Palladium on the Snow and I'm so glad you tried it. I didnt put it on as heavy as you, I put dots on just as I saw you did before the firing. Mine came out as you said and I said, "Feathering". so I'll tell ya Ive got an idea I'm going to try and I will share a picture with you when I'm done. I will take a shot of the mug I made which you asked to see. I didnt see your message to me for almost 3 weeks after you posted it. Great load for you this firing and I have to say that you truly are a potter to be respected for the work you create and the top notch records and test tiles you take. I love seeing all your work and look forward to it every time Your fellow potter in Denver Colorado!!!
So so pleased you suggested it. I’ve made my son an orb for the garden. And we are doing the same for that. I was in a right panic when I put so much on the top with a pippet and nearly scrapped some off as I knew how much it runs. But the snow being a Celladon seams to hold it a lot better. The dots merged lively with the creeping. It was amazing. Then that made me try the bud vase with palladium and then other metallic glazes and fabulous. Very different colours for me and I loved them. Thankyou !!
Just read the second half of your massage as was so excited to tell you how happy I was. I love chatting to other potters. Denver. All these places I need to visit. Yesterday I was chatting to a lady in New Zealand. Then one in Jamaica. Wow how international.
Really amazing! Thank you so much for your videos, i really learn so much and inspire me to try similar and different things. Now I look forward to glazing!
It was really interesting to see the before and after and I’m so impressed with the system you have for recording which glazes you have used. Thank you! 😃
Lovely to see the care you take with your glazes and the delight you take in the more experimental bud vases. You got so many beauties with this firing!
You mentioned you use china white and something else on your cookies to keep your pieces from sticking. What was the something else? BTW, I can't begin to tell you how informative and fantastic your video is. I look forward to your other videos and subscribing. Pot on!!
Thanks for all these lovely combinations Lois. I was wondering if you post pictures of the pots with the glazes before firing them, so we can see how you layered and dripped? Also did you make your cookies or buy them, if so where ?
Hi. Made my cookies. Some are slab rolled. Cut out using a round cutter Held between two layers of dry wall board until dry so they are flat the others I have followed Joe Thompson at Old Forge creations and made some that raise the pot up buy catch the glaze if need be. I was having issues with them sticking to the pot but recently I put kiln wash on them. 50/50 China clay and Alumina Hydrate (though check that). There are different recipes and it made a huge difference. If you tell me the pots you like at the time I can explain what I did. I did show some at the beginning this time and I think it helped people realise the work that goes into it.
@@LoisHook Thanks Lois. I just watched your explanation of the glazes you used on the vase, so great. Now I’m seeing that you have many more on this video and will take notes! I’ve been making my own cookies but think I should use cone 10 clay so they may last longer. Yours are professional looking . 🙏🏼
Bonjour Madame vos couleurs sont super .Moi je débute .vous faites vos couleurs au pinceau avec plusieurs couleurs merci de votre réponse .encore bravo
Hi Lois. I have a tan speckled clay and the combos I liked are Merlot and temmoku on the rim, alabaster and temmoku on the rim and the texture turquoise also looks great by itself, but my clay is similar to your maybe give you a different results, better to do more testing and see with colours your daughter in law likes the better 🤗
I have used many colours on the Lavaflek though not alabaster. Interesting when out. They chose the one I had sent a pick off iron lustre x2 and toasted sage x2. So result. I have videoed the colours outside and some are really nice.
Lois I read that black Magma can cause a color reaction on nearby pots. Have you found this happening I really love the look but can’t risk other peoples pots at the studio.
Not too much on other pots. More that the black magma lightens and becomes slightly brown and even bigger bubbles. But not so noticeable that it’s an issue.
Hi it’s in the UK Scarva Terracolour Solar Red. Gutt Hellrot. The orange is amazing too. But it’s usually for inside as it runs. So top half outside. www.scarva.com/Mobile/en/Terracolor-Brush-on-Stoneware-Glazes/m-c-89.aspx
I very much like the ancient copper matte next to the shiny glaze on top...adds interest
I love how you showed the before and after. The transformation is magical.
I've watched A TON of these videos from all kinds of potters. You are my absolute FAVORITE glaze artist. Thanky you for sharing so much. ❤
That’s very kind.
Love seeing the pots before firing...hope you will continue doing that.

Amazing results!😊❤️😊love them as is😊
Ok I love when they have matte finishes so ancient copper as it is on those pieces is stunning to me.
The palladium over snow is awesome!
Agreed
I’m really enjoying re watching your videos and writing down lots of glaze combos. I pray you’re doing well.
I’m good Thankyou.
Great show! I love your technique. #Keepupthegreatwork

You have the BEST kiln openings! Thanks for all your experimentations and your excitement.
Beautiful pottery.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Fabulous bud vases.....the glaze combinations are wonderful 👏 👏 👏
Thats the snow and palladium ordered!
It was really interesting to see the before and after and I’m so impressed with the system you have for recording which glazes you have used. Thank you! 😃
All pots are numbered 001-21 so I can keep a record. I also photograph the pot when painted with the glazes used.
Fabulous!!. The snow with palladium is so lovely, like mocha diffusion.
That was the biggest surprise.
Lots of work in there and some really interesting results, thanks for sharing it all with us.
Thank you for sharing-all your lovely pieces!
The palladium over snow looks a little bit like mocha diffusion, and I love it.
Thank you, Lois, for this is a very inspiring video. I really appreciate that you describe your thought process and you show us the fired results!
Like the Matt finish of the ancient copper .....
Thank you I really enjoy watching
At 19:43 that incredible vase...iron Luster and Oatmeal and a bit of Smokey Merlot somewhere? How many x of SM plz? Thank you!!! So gorgeous!
The vase at 19.43 is three coats of Iron Lustre and thick coat of Oatmeal. That’s all
Lovely to see the care you take with your glazes and the delight you take in the more experimental bud vases. You got so many beauties with this firing!
Thank you so informative and fun
Very nice, you get great results with your glazing. Thanks for sharing your combinations.
So many successes in this firing. Glazing is truly a journey and I am learning so much from you! Thank you.
love the vases.
Brilliant as usual and yes inspiring .... great results
I have just tried light flux over AC and loved the results. You may want to look into it. Love your work!

Alumina Hydtrate. It’s been a while since I e thought about this. But I believe it’s equal amounts.

Yes I just heard TT at 24:17 or so...thx!!!
The bud vase at that time is Amaco Vert Lusture and Mayco Midnight Rain. Is this the one you mean.
Also 28.20 is also the same but with some runs of oatmeal and round the middle of the vase with oatmeal.
@lois Hook Pottery,
Paladium over snow, the effect is similar to "mocha diffusion"
I will look into this. Cheers.

@@LoisHook alabaster is mayco colour. It is a nice satin white colour.🤗

Beautiful pots! what kiln do you use? :)
This is a Skutt KMT1018
Palaisdian Fringing is hot!
Don’t re-fire the ancient copper. It’s beautiful as is…
How do you make your biscuits? Do you bisque fire them before using them for glazed pots?
Yes I would bisque then use.
I also put shelf wash on them and that helped make sure they would not stick if the glaze ran. I hope that helped a bit.
@@LoisHook Thank you
My ancient copper comes out matt. I have an older kiln that cools verry fast. My controller does not allow for a slow cool
What are you using in place of PC 56 Copper?
This is an old video but because it was one of my favourites I had bought 3 pots and I still have. To to answer I’m still using it.
What clay have you used for your dinner service samples?
UK Lavaflek. potclays.

Thank you Lois. Loved the results of those glazes on the clay!
Hiya I've been looking for a decent red, what is the red you used on your bud vases?
Hi it’s in the UK Scarva Terracolour Solar Red. Gutt Hellrot. The orange is amazing too. But it’s usually for inside as it runs. So top half outside.

@@LoisHook that's really helpful, I'll have a look later x
What was the blue glz w the Ancient Copper? Plz? Thx!!
I used Textured Turquoise with Ancient Copper. Is that what you meant. If not please tell me the time within the video And I can check.
Ancient copper is no longer available I've heard.
That is true but I had a couple of jars.
