I love the inside of your fire red flower coffee cup! Wow! It is a beauty…I love your pots with the lids..I love your lids..they are so charming…have to learn more about this!! …. I especially love the one with the light blue design!
Thanks so much for this excellent video. I've only been pottering for 7 months so now I'm learning about glaze combos and this has been very helpful! I've tried a few combos and they've all come out amazingly well.... You've inspired me to try more! Exciting times! Thank you! 👍😁👏👏👏
Lois. These videos are so so helpful, love your work and love all the test tiles you have done- just bought 6 amaco glazes and am praying to the kiln gods for my firing that’s on tonight. I have used a few of you combinations thank you again .
Always like tour videos and taste in color combos. Tons Of respect that you share the color combos which takes tons of time and money. Thank you kindly.
I’m new to pottery and I just have to thank you for all your hard work in sharing your beautiful pottery pieces and skills with us! 👏🏼 I have to tell you my favorite piece was the first one with Blue rutile and snow on top on the inside of your mug! Gorgeous! Would you mind terribly sharing how many coats of each you applied. I would be so grateful! 👏🏼❤️
Lois, you are a super precise person, thanks to you I am learning how to apply glazes and I can see the results. Nobody but you does this. Thank you. Nice to look at your works. Kind regards. Ewa from Poland
Another amazing dive into your kiln. Thanks for sharing, today I've also liked your single glaze mugs, the colours are just wow. I tell in love with your red 'flower' design I think it was 3 or 4 out of the kiln. But the smoky merlo, the purple colour was just perfect. You must be so pleased
Oh my goodness--- I have kiln envy---- wish I could feed my kiln some Miracle Grow and get it to grow bigger..... LOVE that Blue Stone on that Grog clay---wow-za....seems you have so many good results....I unload and get maybe two or three Smiles and the rest of my items leave me scratching my head.... LOL THANK YOU for your videos---you and another UA-camr have inspired me to try "re-glazing"...unloading my first re-glaze this evening! Thanks again for your channel!
Every piece u took out of that kiln was STUNNING. I like to see some of the glazes on their own too. Deep Olive speckle, indigo float & the others were perfect. Ive got a few pieces Im glazing with only one glaze. I go back and forth like u with my glazes. Some are layered...some are not. Keep em comin Lady, u ROCK!☺
Thank you! So enjoyed the excitement of your kiln opening, you got a lovely haul of gorgeous pieces and it will help me this Wednesday when I glaze! Thank you for sharing your creative process.
Amazing grouping of wonderful glazing! I learn so much from you and have five pieces in our studio kiln based on your inspiration. Can’t wait to see them now!
Fabulous results! Don’t be discouraged with those amazing jars. Just tap the lids with a wooden spoon and they should pop off. Be patient. I’ve done it and it works!
Nimia miller I tried everything and did get three out without damage. The two with issues I had made the kids so tight anyway. Thanks for your thoughts. If it does happen again I will know abit more of what to do.
Ive been potting since mid September... I enjoy watching your videos, you've inspired me to do the same with the test tiles, so I'm just in the middle of glazing them and some other bisque d mugs, plates and bowls... cant wait to get them fired to see the results
A gorgeous kiln load. I have only a rudimentary knowledge of ceramics and you held my interest right the way through, though I have to say as a wannabe owner and not a maker. I loved your spotty cup, the little pale pot in the middle row far left as well as too many others! The one with the bright red flower effect inside is spectacular!
Each pièces is différent i'm a new potters ans i love to do potery but i have to do my own test of glazing sometime make me happy and some time not but i persévere in my hobby. Thank you for this amazing vidéo
Good Job! I really appreciate you being so willing to share your combos and tests. I have been doing it about 2 years and I am so addicted, so much fun. Merry Christmas!
I fire to ^6 also. To control it at the very end, I program the last ramp at 80* for the last hour. With the residual heat there at top temperature, firing that slow at the end allows me to control how fast the cones go down. Then I do a 15 or 20 minute hold but the cones don’t change much. It gives a real good soak at top temp without over firing.
You make lovely pottery, and I wrote down a few of your combos to try! You did your lids right, you should fire the lids on the pots (but with no glaze where they meet of course). Lids will usually pop off when you tap all around them with a wooden dowel, or wooden spoon, or the wood handle of a hammer. You can usually tap harder than you think you should ;) Good luck!
Beautiful. I have a suggestion on the stuck lids. If you take a grinding stone and rub it on the bottom and then pat the bottom of the pot the shock will usually pop off the lid. But not if it is glaze stuck. I learned this from another potter many years ago.
When lids are stuck... place in the freezer for at least an hour... then lightly tap with a piece of wood or rubber hammer! Be sure to put foam underneath while tapping so your lid won’t break when it pops off.
Three coats as a base glase or unlayered - unless the extra layers are added tof different reactions. Tell me a time in the video and I can look for you.
I saw on Matthew Kelly's video where he actually addressed the issue of how to get the lids off. I forgot what he said because I don't have those issues. You might want to watch and ask him. Just a suggestion. Beautiful as usual.
Hi, I just find your v-log today. Your everything is very beautiful, specially 3:33 terracota sola red is perfect red for me. Which brand is that glaze? I can't find this glaze.
The red is Terracolour solar red. www.google.com/search?q=terracolour+solar+red&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari I hope that helps. There is an orange one and a deeper maroon one called gut Helrot.
That bowl is what I call my midnight skies glaze. In side x3 obsidian if I want to keep the bottom of the bowl jet black I may do another coat there. Then Smokey Merlot 3 layers but graduated. So one over a third one a bit higher up and the third in the rim. Then very thick Oatmeal on the rim. Cone 6 medium fire 10 minute hold.
Fab U Lous!! Very exciting kiln opening. I love the red combos. Did you fire the test tiles inside the pots? Have a wonderful Christmas and good luck with the lids ☺
The kiln creates a suction where the air is sucked out of the pot. Gently tap the lid with a wooden spoon to release the vacuum seal. The lids should pop off
Was going to ask in 545 is that ancient jasper and solar orange? On the inside did you do solar orange and the rim with ancient jasper and oatmeal or just ancient jasper and solar orange? Really neat how they react.
If you haven't figured out how to get the lid off yet, I use a flathead screwdriver and very gently put down in the edge and carefully twist. As long as glaze isn't the reason it won't separate, it works greatl. If screwdriver is too thick then try a dinner knife.
Diana Nesbitt I did that. After pouring boiling water on some went into the pot and caused some pressure which helped. Problem was my lids were tight so not enough room down the side. Also the rims were thin. One broke badly. Used the grinding disk to grind if both sides of the rim. Another a bit broke off glued on with Mayco mud added to bisque fire and the glaze colour came out brown. (Smokey merlot one) so really two lost.
Some potters on YT will put combo names , OVER/UNDER NAMES WITH # OF COATS AS they show the piece (text goes over video). We can take screen shots and have a crisp library of glaze samples. Maybe you can learn that editing. It is brilliant! Thanks.
If there is anything you want to know more about let me the time stamp and I will let you know. I know how to do the editing and will see if I can sort but it’s a time thing. I’ll see what I can do.
There is a good question. This is a while ago. I will watch the video and see if I can remember. I would have thought I used an underglaze and a piper type thingy. I will come back to you.
I also run a family business selling reptiles. www.reptilecentre.com have two shops and a dog grooming business. So I have been doing a bit less at work and I usually lay in bed and do the editing using SPLICE. A great bit of software for iPhones by Go Pro.
Hi Lois, Please could you tell me what temp you fire your kiln to when using Amaco potters choice glazes. I’ve been having problems with pinholes and I’m firing to 1240 Thanks 😊
I have no issues with pin holes then one plate with a different clay. It was with 20 pots on a fine stone where. It was a grogged stone where. It had also sat a long while before glazing so it may have been dirty. Watch my last kin unloading and you will see the bowl. I will do a video on it in the future.
Another thing is waxed with wax mixed with some aluminum Hydrate, you waxed that mix on the gallery and the lip of the lid, just becarfull not to get glaze on the wax. The glaze will bubble on the wax. 🤗
Marcia Silvia Johnson Thankyou. I had forgotten about that. I had seen a video on it and completely forgot. I have Alumina hydrate here from when I tried the wadding.
Lois Hook Pottery What confused me was that at the end of your firing you said the cone 6 was still upright until the last 10 minutes or so. Shouldn’t the cone 6 have been bent before the 10 minute hold time? Am I missing something here? 🤔
mary carlino your right. The one in the top shelf was just bending over so slightly. And then continued to fully bend whilst I was watching. But the one on the bottom shelf was further bent over as I showed.

beautiful glazes. I love that ancient copper and your night skies is one I'm going to try. Good luck with the lids. I hope that come off.

I’m definitely a fan of the speckled clay
Fantastic kiln opening!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching each and every piece come out of the kiln -- your enthusiasm is endearing and contagious! Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful work! Everything looks so lovely together.
Another brilliant result! Your videos have been such an inspiration, I’m just about ready to build my garden studio and I can’t wait!
Once again beautiful results and thank you for sharing! Gives me so much inspiration Merry Christmas

Lovely work - how many layers do you typically use on your coffee cups! Fabulous!

dekuji za inspiraci 🥰
thx for inspiration, every piece is so lovely !!
So beautiful! 💙 May I ask which glaze was on the bowl at 7:48? (black&blue)
Hi
Base is 3x Obsidian.
Rim and into the bowl x2 Smokey Merlot.
Then thick Oatmeal round the rim.
Cone 6 medium fire
@@LoisHook I would have guessed Indigo Float over Obsidian, with Oatmeal. So much blue and not as purple. Very nice !
Hi, I just find your v-log today. Your everything is very beautiful, specially 3:33 terracota sola red is perfect red for me. Which brand is that glaze? I can't find this glaze.

I wouldn't have expected so much blue from smokey merlot. I get more purple over obsidian
It’s the oatmeal that changes it to the blue. It also has fleckles of maroon. It’s amazing
Watch the beginning of video 16. It talks and shows you this glaze really well.
The lids should pop off
Dat een deksel niet loskomt hoe goed ik ook oplet altijd een tegenvaller dan nog liever een puntje dat ik kan bijwerken met acryl verf
Please tell me what kind of matte black coating (name) at 10:00, sorry for my bad English. Lovely job

@@LoisHook Thank you much
Hi! Love your stuff. Would you please tell me your firing schedule? Hold? Cool down period? Thanks!
I have a Skutt kmt1018.
So all prescheduled firings. So cone 6 no hold normal cool down.
@@LoisHook ok no problem. Thanks!
i have started firing the lids separately. so far so good.
Was going to ask in 545 is that ancient jasper and solar orange? On the inside did you do solar orange and the rim with ancient jasper and oatmeal or just ancient jasper and solar orange? Really neat how they react.
So it’s solar orange inside. Ancient Jasper our. Painted on rim
So Dale’s ok the inside.
Oh no not wax resist on lids...never do that again, your pieces are so beautiful!!! thank you for sharing your learning with us!! Subscribed Lois

Hi Lois,
Please could you tell me what temp you fire your kiln to when using Amaco potters choice glazes.
I’ve been having problems with pinholes and I’m firing to 1240
Thanks 😊
I have a KMT 1018 skutt with a preset computer. I fire to cone 6. But it is a high cone 6 nearly a 7.
I have no issues with pin holes then one plate with a different clay. It was with 20 pots on a fine stone where. It was a grogged stone where. It had also sat a long while before glazing so it may have been dirty. Watch my last kin unloading and you will see the bowl.

Marcia Silvia Johnson Thankyou. I had forgotten about that. I had seen a video on it and completely forgot. I have Alumina hydrate here from when I tried the wadding.
Were you firing to a cone 6 initially, or a cone 5?
mary carlino I show the cones. I fire to 6 on a medium fire with 10 minute hold.
Lois Hook Pottery What confused me was that at the end of your firing you said the cone 6 was still upright until the last 10 minutes or so. Shouldn’t the cone 6 have been bent before the 10 minute hold time? Am I missing something here? 🤔

Lois Hook Pottery ah...that makes sense. So the top shelf tends to be cooler? Good to know that. Still learning. Thanks!!
Tap the lids with a wooden spoon handle all around the top.
I lightly tap with a rubber mallett
Tapping gently with a rubber mallet often works.
Knock with wood, usually that do the trick. Good luck 🤗
If you use a generous Batt wash on the cookies its easier to get the pots off the cookie I have successfully done this on several occations.
Just tap the lids with a small hammer.
Even better with a rubber mallet.
Not hard. Just a light tap.
There should be an epilepsy warning on this video. That flickering light make it unwatchable. :-(
I am using my phone and have no option re the fluorescent light. Only option is not to watch sorry.
