There's actually a voiceline for Winston during setup where Reaper says that Winston isn't liked by kids and Winston just flat out says "I don't think even children are scared of you".
I can definitely agree that the Pony of Shadows was a missed opportunity for an *awesome* villan
You’d think that a show with a team full of writers would be able to pull of more than one villain archetype.
I definitely agree that MLP has WAY too many redemption stories. I’d love to see a more in depth villain that just doesn’t do a 180 because of The Magic Of Friendship.
Voldemort screwing a Darkrai is now my new favorite thing, and I feel no shame about that
The rant as Lily’s voice fades is everything
Keep in mind Blizzard also made a character with tragic past and turned out to be the ultimate evil mother fifer, gul'dan (the one in Legion that is). Gul'dan not only has some of the most deliciously evil dialogue but goes so far to even calling himself "Darkness Incarnate", which by the way he got sued one time for Trademark because of that, true story. I can't imagine how unsatisfying it would have been for someone like Gul'dan to be "redeemed" just because of how he was bullied for his deformity and Blizzard knows this. I would MUCH rather have a character go all the way towards the dark side than some character who does dirty deeds due to dirt cheap writing just so they get a redemption arc.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT GUL'DAN! HE'S EVERYTHING TEMPEST IS BUT BETTER!
The Reaper dancing rain men had me on the floor.
Hey kids! What's worse than a repeated story arc that's predictable and boring and isn't even all that good in terms of writing? Using said repeated story arc on a really f**king cool character design. Yeah that is the thing that bothers me in all of this. The wasted opportunity. The only reason I was excited for the MLP movie was Tempest. She had an incredible design, had intimidating movement of animation, was voiced by literal queen Emily Blunt. So to find out they did a redemption on her.....*flips table*. Hey writers, you do realize that not only some of your most memorable villains, but most villains popular to the public (ex. Disney) aren't popular because "I'm sad and now I'm good", right? They're popular because they be evil and love every second of it!!!!! (Only few antagonists I have seen have succeeded in the tragic backstory/redemption element. The difference is tho that said character was played up as an ANTAGONIST. A foil. Not a villain. And their backstory wasn't "I lost a friend when I was a kid").
I think I could have enjoyed you talking about this for a half hour.
Well then you'll LOVE the 98 minutes I spend talking about The Legend of Korra on Christmas Day :P
So the "tragic friendship-related backstory" villain in MLP is becoming what the Fire/Fighting-type starter was in Pokemon, a cool concept at first until Gamefreak decided to use it three consecutive times for their Fire-type starter and people got very tired of it. The difference is that Gamefreak finally stopped doing that ( and hopefully won't start doing it again). I worry this trend will continue into the Season Eight premier(?) and redeem Chrysalis after telling the audience how she could never find acceptance from ponykind due to her ghastly appearance or something...
Admittedly, when you were describing Reaper, I thought you were gonna pull out the video of him dancing to J-Pop. The other clip was still cool, along with your criticisms of the writing. This was a good video. :)
11:00 God Damnit Lily
The only things MLP movies add is world building, maybe good music and fun character interactions.
So the only thing they add that matters is fun character interactions
No it is not to much to ask for better villains.
Where can I find more of that glorious artwork you displayed so briefly Madame Lily?
No your not asking too much it’s tiring to have a the same story played over and over again.
Two Questions:
1. Do you find it at all concerning that people are focusing more on the porn rather than the purpose of this video?
2. How the hell do you calm down after every video?
1. Well I did put it in the video in the first place, so I clearly wanted it to draw attention :P
2. Voice acting doesn't require calming down.
Fair enough
great video, great points all around... I just... have questions... questions I down want to ask... but here we go:
1that was a real picture?
2 where did you FIND it?
3 wtf?
What's your opinion on antagonists who are doing it just because?
Not necessarily 'for fun', but not because they were spited, or because they think something needs to change. But it isn't for shits 'n giggles either. They do not think morality should apply, so they don't exercise it. It's not that they don't HAVE a sense of morality, they just choose not to exercise it.
They do have the same shitty backstory as Starlight Glimmer "my friend left", well, not like that, but equally as shitty, but not that specific one. But it just showed them that "hey, morality kinda inhibits you sometimes. Some morally 'bad' things are pretty fun." What would your reaction be then?
That's Discord, and he's the most overwhelmingly beloved character in the series.
How do you come up with these titles lily
So I know this wasn't brought up in the video much, but since this feels like the only Movie video you'll do, I'm going to bring it up and get feedback. Ignoring the "friendship is the solution to everything" bit already clashing with what's going on, did you have any opinions on when Twilight finally snaps and chews out her friends for constantly getting them in trouble during their adventure? I frankly spent almost the entire movie wanting her to yell at them for the rainboom or trusting cappers, and yet it's delivered both after Twilight has made her own lapse in judgement (only because I think she could make a much better plan then wait til the room is empty), and instead of addressing how badly things could've gone if any of those people HADN'T become friends with the mane six (like slavery), it's turned into another cliche "Friends fight and can't stand each other anymore."
First of all, it wasn't that cliche. Pinkie says it explicitly: "I just can't talk to you *right now*."
Second of all, that is my favorite scene from the movie. Twilight is so blinded by stress and following Celestia's orders to the letter that not only can she not see how the others have been building allies, and all that stress finally boils over when she snaps at Pinkie. Pinkie even tries to explain that they were doing exactly what they needed to do, but again Twilight has blinders on and simply won't listen.
