**hears about the equality idea**
**begins to write a manifesto**
Lily: "I'm a socialist"
Me: "I like you more now."
Politics 101 series: A very good idea I am thinking if you want to do it.
7:27 i didnt actually realize this before but its only seen as bad because the villain is bad and evil and he says it in a menacing way so it HAS to be bad but no argument is actually given to why its bad and its never brought up again
I think that freedom is the ability to act on your own mind, as in free speech, freedom of expression, and other such things. Though, I also believe that it means that one must accept that they could be wrong when they say such things. It's the freedom to be stupid, but the idea is that through education, we can grow on ideas to better the world. I would say that a fascist has the right to speak, but then I expect the people to reject the concept entirely through what we know. I think that is best, though once again, I know I could be wrong.
I believe freedom is the state of having the following things in enough abundance that they are not a worry: Water, Food, Shelter, Health Care, Security, and Political Rights. If I have to slave over minimum wage to keep a roof over my head, I am not free no matter how much "freedom of expression" I technically have.
The problem with this version, is that there is no longer a reason for the mane 6 to oppose Starlight Glimmer, as you said yourself. If a system works, then why fix it? If it ain't broken, don't fix it, as the overused saying goes. If she was a competent leader, then she wouldn't need a friendship lesson or tutelage and the ponies in her town wouldn't need saving. And being a competent leader isn't the point of her character arc. She was meant to be an overreacting maniac, who went on a rampage out of bitterness. She needed the friendship lesson to calm her tits and change to better function in society. If her ideology worked, then there would be no reason for the mane 6 to act and it would detract from her character arc about calming the fuck down and taking control of her tendency to overreact.
A working system has a rational leader behind it. Starlight isn't one. It was her own personality that drove her to become a villain. Not a grand vision of the utopia, but her own bitterness and overreaction. Her redemption arc isn't about perfecting her political system, it's about overcoming deep flaws in her own personality.
So the problem with this version is that all the terrible bullshit that comes after no longer happens? That's not a problem. I saw that effect, and considering that Starlight has consistently been the worst thing about Friendship is Magic, erasing her terrible design from the canon is a great idea.
You're right: Being a competent leader isn't the point of her character arc. So we write a better one instead.
There's no longer a reason for the Main Six to oppose Starlight Glimmer... except perhaps dogmatic pride. Which results in the Main Six learning a lesson instead.
She was meant to be an overreacting maniac who went on a rampage out of bitterness... except that was a terrible idea and DHX shouldn't have went with it in the first place.
You're right, if her ideology worked then most of what they've done with Starlight Glimmer wouldn't have a reason to happen. Instead the writers would have to have good ideas. Ideas that aren't excessively lazy and operate on "because I say so" rhetoric.
This Starlight wouldn't be a villain. She wouldn't have the "My friend moved away, gonna burn down the planet" backstory. She wouldn't have a forced redemption and subsequent character arc flooded by sulking.
These aren't problems, these are ways the show is changed for the better. It is, as I said, a 100% positive result.
Possible reason to consider dismantling your improved Starlight town: Everyone has all the talents, but for each talent, only the original owner ENJOYS using it. The society is highly sophisticated, but no one is really doing things they like to do, leading to lower collective happiness in spite of greater ability. It's not exactly a horrible problem, but it would be enough for MLP to work with.
But if you have all the talents, you can just do whatever you want and not have to worry about not being good at it. Reflected in ponies like Rarity, who's talent augments her chosen career in an indirect way.
I can't imagine it would be often that the government goes "Hey! We need a few more architects on this project" or that it would be that much of an issue to stop what you're doing to go be an architect for a few weeks.
This problem isn't actually a problem.
Coming from a former soviet country, some of the things you said makes sense.
I keep hearing a lot of pensioners saying that "things we're better back then" and I'm like " ARe you fucking STUPID?!"
The former regime would have you in prison or shot for reading foreign books, listening to foreign radio, complaining about the leader, being on the street after midnight etc.
But those people we're not really doing those things anyway, not then not now, so why would they bother?
See the former regime ensured the "basic" survival needs as according to Maslow's pyramid. As in food, shelter, a job, security(except when the "militia" would beat the crap out of someone for information or abuse their status for personal gains but that is a different subject), some basic entertainment, affordable alcohol and cigarettes and that's about all.
I keep demanding to know why the elders keep voting for the same old bastards that we're into politics back in the "communist" regime. Like WHY. because what's the point in voting for someone who grants things like "being a member of the european union" or "less taxes for entrepeneurs" or "access to information", " freedom of speech" etc, when you are not capable of benefiting of such things? They just want basic healthcare, be able to afford food, meds, a home, TV, a cigarette and some cheap drink and that's about all. Why vote for someone who offers anything else?
This applies not just to pensioneers and not just to people in my country, this applies everywhere.
THIS is the problem of democracy : Tyranny of the majority. If the majority cares only about their basic needs, the rest will be ignored. So you are one person of minority who wants clean water in your neighborhood ? Well we are one hundred who want a park build in our neighborhood. And that's democracy. An intelligent minority would say that they need infrastructure to allow better logistics so investments would work to strengthen the economy. The less intelligent majority would say they need something like healthcare, no matter if they run out of money eventually, they just want it now, who cares about long term goals?
And..they would be both right. But there would be more people who are "right" about healthcare, therefore theirs is the only right.
What you described sounds fine and dandy, but I’d like to raise the question as to how the economy is supposed to work. Like, no one would be able to charge more for a service than the lowest bidder, which would eventually(and probably rapidly) create an environment where everyone is doing everything for free, especially when everyone has the same skill-sets, allowing them to do whatever they would have previously needed to pay someone to do, themselves. This would essentially eliminate the need for currency, which causes problems in the event they have to trade for materials they don’t have, with a society that doesn’t function like they do.
They would just trade materials of equal value in place of currency, which is still done to this very day in the real world.
Why do you block likes and dislikes?
They are a useless metric
Lily Peet well. Why do you think ratings about each of your videos are useless? Shouldn't it be another way for you to see the vision of your public about the topic? Not having the need to be coments
A blank "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down" doesn't tell me anything. All it says is "I liked this video" or "I didn't like this video" and gives absolutely no information about the specifics of that like or dislike. So I have no way of knowing if a dislike was the result of a philosophical disagreement, a dislike of my review on an episode, or a genuine belief that my content is suffering for a tangible reason.
Comments are more likely to go into that detail. Audience Retention gives more context to 100% of the audience's viewing behavior by highlighting which parts of a video were replayed/skipped. Compared to both of those, the Like/Dislike system is completely worthless. It doesn't give you any useful information. You're left to speculate on precisely why people disliked the video.
Also, when you compare total votes to viewership, oftentimes less than 1% of the viewerbase will actually use the rating system. Making any decisions off that is a waste of time especially when Audience Retention measures 100% of the viewers.
Well, shit. When you put it like that, yeah. The like/dislike system really IS a useless metric. I think you just blew my mind!
Now that we have reached talking about socialism lily answer me this question. Since what you proposed for starlights socialist town would work and the main six would have have a hard time trying to break it how come this would work but socialism in the real world doesn't work
Canada and most of Europe would like a word with you.
