I've got a 2015 with 175,000 miles and love it ! After doing TONS of research with GM techs the ONE mod that really makes a difference is the Thermal Bypass Valve and GM had a service bulletin about it and have a replacement part for it . Nice truck !
it lets trans fluid circulate tru through the cooler at all times, vs waiting for the trans to hit 195 degrees before opening... killing tourqe converter for heat...
Great info for anyone with a 2014-18 GM V8. I bought a 2017 Yukon with 39000 miles on it back in April of 2020. Great vehicle rides nice and is very quiet going down the road. One of the first things I did was install a catch can. The second thing I did myself was drain and replace all the drive line fluids and I also had the radiator flushed and fluid replaced. I also did a lot of research on things that go wrong on these GM V8 vehicles. When I went to my local and very trusted transmission shop, I ask the owner what the best preventive things to do for this type of transmission? He suggested to replace the stock torque converter with a billet converter and a few other modifications to how this 6-speed transmission works. He also suggested to have the active fuel management removed by a guy who comes to his shop to do that along with the transmission upgrades. The cost for the torque converter swap, fluid and filter replacement and computer upgrades was 1700.00. The Yukon drives even better now, and I also did the transmission thermostat delete kit myself. Got the kit for just under 40 bucks. Pretty simple to do, just make sure you do this job when the exhaust pipes are cool. Transmission runs much cooler after the delete kit was installed. I am 70 now and hope this vehicle will last the rest of my driving days. It is my second vehicle, and I never drive it in the winter. It now has 43000 miles, and I am looking forward to spring so I can get it back on the road. Living in southeastern MI it is always best, if possible, to have a sacrificial vehicle to weather all the road salt that is used during the winter season. So far this winter it snows just enough nearly every week for the road commission to use road salt on the roads on a regular basis. I have a yearly prepaid pass for the drive though car wash that has an under-body wash to try my best to prolong the corrosive effects of all the road salt used during the winter. So far this has been a bad year for that. Would be nice to live in part of the county where winter is just a cooler time of the year without all the corrosive effects of road salt. I used to enjoy winter when I was younger, not so much anymore. I do however still walk my 6-year-old Beagle Hound Mix, Cloey every day, weather permitting at the local county park. She helps keep me moving and staying limber. Think spring everyone.

Low cost DIY upgrades to make these GM vehicles last longer...
From what I read the issue is the lifters failing /getting stuck the tuner helps but doesn’t stop from the lifters failing …only real good fix is a afm delete being it replaces the lifters with “non abjustable /afm lifters”
the tunner keeps it in v8 mode so the lifters are not being cycled , they stay pumped up , ppl believe what they want and form many opinions, i have used this range device in 6of my other dod trucks and never had a issue, so can i guarantee that yours will be ok no but they have worked for me
Put the shifter in manual mode , you can pick how many gears you want . You can make it a 3 speed if you want up to what ever gear you want to use. I usually pick 6 . The truck will shift all the gears and it will never go to 4 cylinder mode.
Sounds to me like someone has already done the transmission thermostat bypass from the temperatures you mentioned.. You can just flip the thermostat valve and it allows free flow of transmission fluid. That is what I did on my 2014. No need to buy a kit. I also, with draw a gallon of trans fluid every 20k miles and put a new clean gallon back in. Just a little insurance, maybe. I am at 125k on mine.
no it was the stock thermo valve in there , but it was a lower mileage one older adult owner, so maybe we just got lucky on a good unit, but i still put it in anyway it doesn't get over 145 degrees pulling 30 ft camper so i'm happy 👍

I've heard from a few people about the range disabler you got. You were the straw that broke the camels back and I finally bought one. Let's hope the truck wants to stop playing games now! 😂
Great explanation of everything. I did the same things on my 16 silverado along with some basic transmission and converter tuning with hp tuners. It drives so much better and limits the abuse the converter sees with the factory tune, which casues most of the issues.

Other than that, I have the thermostat bypass to keep temps down.

I’m no professional or certified mechanic by far but if I can take it apart I can usually put it back together lol, this tune that you speak of, could you please help explain a little better or inform me with a little more information so I can try to find someone to do this for me, (possibly do it myself), love the Denali but some of these issues can be very aggravating at times…..initially came here because vehicle shutting off and losing all power at random turns, cleaned both ground points mentioned with no affect, then cleaned the negative cable at battery terminal, so far haven’t ran into the powering off issue
One more you need to get is a throttle body spacer you also need a throttle controller that plugs into the gas peddle to help with the lag in the peddle

I had a Range AFM for my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and it would do weird things from time to time like flash power steering and brake codes, and also on several occassions I would put key in and nothing, couldn't start my vehicle turnd the key and nothing no power, etc. I had to unplug and re-plug in to start my truck. I since have stopped using it several years ago and sold it. Wondering if anyone else experience some weird issues like this with the Range AFM disabler?
i used them for many of my chevy trucks and never had issues, but i did switch to the pulsar lt tuners and like it 100 percent better, but way more money for more options wondering if you just got a bad one or even heard of computers on these era trucks goin crazy and failing, i haven't had any problems with mine personally but can't speak for others, hope you have better luck my friend 👍
i have had power steering issues and my voltage gauge would drop and then i would get warning lights on thought it was my alternator so changed it and did same thing at times, so i replaced it again with the high amp alternator 180 amp vs 160 since everything is power, and put the bigger battery in and haven't had any issues since, so after three alternator and battery upgrades problem solved
@@MMCGRACING Good to know don't forget to check all the ground cables those can cause all sorts of apparent electrical issues if not grounded properly or if corroded out.
@@MMCGRACING Nice, I thought about trying a tuner to permanently disable since it always drives smoother in V8 mode. I tried the M5 trick which keeps it in V8 all the time and drove it like that for a while but it's a pain to keep doing that and not having 6th. ~112K miles all driven with the AFM on crossing my fingers.
@MMCGRACING I'm in California and we have to smog the car every 2 years. With this chip monitors would not set in ready mode. I finally did a full delete with camshaft swap and purchased a tuner to deactivate the DOD in the ECU. So far it runs well.
i did a year reweigh video on it, it's great no problems so far but you have to take cere of them, mine pulls all summer long, campers and race trailers temps on 80 degree heat only get to 148 on trans , i did switch to a pulsar lt tunners and love it
So you know....if you put it in manual mode up to manual 5 completely disables dod. Its in the manual. Towing ive never gone into 6th gear so i just always stay in manual 5
@slalomking that sucks, they must have stopped it in 2018 cause it works on my buddies 2018 and my 2014. Also it only works in manual 1 - 5. Not in manual 6. Manual 6 allows dod. Try it in manual 5. Also check your vehicle manual, there may be a new way.
i get that, it's more to keep it in v8 mode mostly, and i haven't had any lifters fair in the last 5 trucks i had with the range device, now i'm using the pulsar tuner it's way better, i'm gonna be doing a video comparing the two , thanks for watching ✌️👍
it does not guarantee not to stop it but it definitely helps by not letting the lifters keep cycling, i've used these types of devices in all my trucks with active fuel management and never had lifters issues, but i'm not everyone im just saying it helps 👍
i bought a device similar to the range BUT i have watched videos where ppl have used that device from day 1 and lifters still fail and other videos that say those devices do not help that being said, im no expert, just repeating what i have seen/heard from other videos
i don't doubt it, every engine is different, some have great luck with it like myself, and i have also seen people having issues, i bought a v8 and it definitely works on keeping it in that mode, thanks for the feedback 👍
That looks like a 14' or 15' but it's definitely not a 16" and using a range technologies AFM programmer does not guarantee one of the AFM lifters (Cyl 1,4,6 or7) still won't fail. The shift technologies transmission thermostat kit also doesn't guarantee the torque converter doesn't fail either. The torque converters weren't constructed well inside. That kit is ok but you should install a billet torque converter. I installed the upgraded GM thermostat P/N 85585333 by GM SB 21-NA-199 that's regulates the trans temp from 90 degrees C down to 70 degrees C. I don't know about the K and N oil catch can but I understand the theory for a purely GDI engine.
@@REM-Roller I paid $82cad no shipping cost, I chose this route because it's a genuine GM part. It lowers the temp from 195F to about 158/160F or from 90c to 70c. GM stamps 70 on the end when it's been upgraded. The only way it will work on your truck is if you also replace the trans cooler lines because they're different on a 14-15' than on the 16-18's. Your lines are held in by clips and mine by a plate with a 10m bolt.
@@REM-Roller Sorry I assumed you were the author of the video. My bad. Yes it should work on your truck. Just take a quick look on the driver's side cooler lines to be 100% that they don't have exposed hexagon fittings!

i must be one of the lucky ones my transmission seems to shift fine , even better now i put a pulsar tunner in, and i'm at 152k i've put almost 30k on it in a year after the mods and it seems like they have improved truck in all aspects, and i tow a lot, a race car and trailer and my 30ft camper all over the state, my buddy owns a very good transmission shop and we see these trucks in there all the time for converter failure, when i do have to go visit the transmission i'm told to upgrade to 6l90 converter and of course he works his magic on the rest,
I did the transmission thermostat a few years ago it seems to work great for the summer time but it sure does not like winter. My transmission feels great at about 130° but it is hard to get it there in the winter time. I went from the best truck ever made a 98 Chevy Silverado to a 2014 and these trucks are nothing more than glorified grocery getter
lol i agree my friend to get the temp up in mine i let it idle for a few minutes it brings the heat up this is after the two starts from the remote start, i let it warm up about 30min on the cold days, but mine seems ok even around 100 degrees,
the pulsar does the delete and i wouldn't recommend keeping it in 5th gear all the time, maybe in town be definitely not on the highway thanks for the suggestion though i appreciate it

you would go to google search and type in your truck information and the part you need and they would tell you everything you need to know about it, i have not got into that system to be able to help you out, but the power of the internet is awesome my friend, wish i had more info about it for you....
Regular transmission fluid changes helps as well
I just have a simple question. Wouldn’t it be easier just to make a U-shaped pipe and hook it into itself constant flow
GREAT VIDEO!!
thanks my friend 👍
Why yes it's March 31 Sunday vedio to watch .from Gordon WALKER
Those are good tips. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Nice truck !
Thanks 👍
In canada, That AFM... failed around 170,000mk 105000 miles ish. Decided to delete the whole system and upgrade the cam. Love the new power, but it was not worth it as the shop kept "finding" things wrong.
Did the Trans mod, just flipped the pill. Catch can is next. you change your headlights... stock junk lol head light revolutions has great products.
thanks for the info on the lights i'm gonna look into them 👍💪
Since the 4.3 v6 also has afm
Would anyone recommend getting the ies for it aswell?
yes i would they still drop cylinders like the v8 l
@ any specific version or is it a one size fit all thing
@diegoibarra7989 you type in the year and engine of your truck and it tells you what one to use
Where do you get your floor mats
there weather tec floor mats and live them they were in the truck when we got it,
I had a Range AFM for my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and it would do weird things from time to time like flash power steering and brake codes, and also on several occassions I would put key in and nothing, couldn't start my vehicle turnd the key and nothing no power, etc.
Whats the part number on the transmission bypass?
they varry from to year i believe, so type in your year on google search and look up shift technologies thermal bypass valve kit
Got mine on Amazon and they have info to get you the correct one 28$ mine was and runs 65-75 degrees cooler
Nice El Camino !!!!!❤
thanks
The only problem with this DOD deactivate chip is that it will not allow the check engine light to come on when you get fault codes.
mine did when stabilizer track sensors went bad, but i'm no expert on these by any means so i appreciate the advice 👍
@MMCGRACING I'm in California and we have to smog the car every 2 years. With this chip monitors would not set in ready mode.
I finally did a full delete with camshaft swap and purchased a tuner to deactivate the DOD in the ECU.
So far it runs well.
What is the deal with head lights pointing up in the trees
idk 🤷♂️
Retrdd
Thank you!
thanks so watching i appreciate it ...
Hey, wondering how your truck has held up for you. I’m 16, found a good deal on a 2014 v6 sierra single cab. Should I bite the bullet and buy it?
i did a year reweigh video on it, it's great no problems so far but you have to take cere of them, mine pulls all summer long, campers and race trailers temps on 80 degree heat only get to 148 on trans , i did switch to a pulsar lt tunners and love it
Drop the link to buy the part’s
sorry my friend i just went through amazon and typed in year of my truck and everything comes up, still learning the basics of dropping links sorry
So you know....if you put it in manual mode up to manual 5 completely disables dod. Its in the manual. Towing ive never gone into 6th gear so i just always stay in manual 5
yeah i seen that in the manual, i just like using my 6 th gear on the high way .. but good for everyone else to know that had these trucks 👍
On our 2019 this 6 gear thing will not work in deactivating AFM.
@@georgehavens4419 I tried everything, then bought the Range (Holley) disabler which plugs into the OGD2 port. Keeps it in V8 mode all the time.
what is dod
will these mods also workout for the 8 speed transmission
i believe so my friend 👍
Hypertech 2.0 you can do that and way more. And you don't have to leave it in the OB2 PORT!
i switched to the pulsar lt and like it way more, cost more money but well worth it
The credits for the truck is 100 bucks on HO tuners and it takes no shot 5 seconds to disable it
i agree but not everyone has the technical ability to understand hp tunner and this is a easy fix thanks 👍🤙
No links for the products or your update..?
no it's easy to look up, sorry for that..
update video was posted to my channel if you want to watch it, thanks 👍
The range and other obd 2 dod deactivation doesn't prevent lifter failure . Could npro long it but only.real.way is to delete the dod
i get that, it's more to keep it in v8 mode mostly, and i haven't had any lifters fair in the last 5 trucks i had with the range device, now i'm using the pulsar tuner it's way better, i'm gonna be doing a video comparing the two , thanks for watching ✌️👍
Diablo i3 tuner will work plus give you more options
i since put the pulsar tunner in and love it way better lots more to control 🤙👍
Its so funny how people think this stops a DOD lifter from not collapsing! But to each is own 😅
it does not guarantee not to stop it but it definitely helps by not letting the lifters keep cycling, i've used these types of devices in all my trucks with active fuel management and never had lifters issues, but i'm not everyone im just saying it helps 👍
You should be able to deactivate it from the controls.
No you can’t
i bought a device similar to the range BUT i have watched videos where ppl have used that device from day 1 and lifters still fail and other videos that say those devices do not help
that being said, im no expert, just repeating what i have seen/heard from other videos
i don't doubt it, every engine is different, some have great luck with it like myself, and i have also seen people having issues, i bought a v8 and it definitely works on keeping it in that mode, thanks for the feedback 👍
How much was the upgraded thermostat?
@@REM-Roller I paid $82cad no shipping cost, I chose this route because it's a genuine GM part. It lowers the temp from 195F to about 158/160F or from 90c to 70c. GM stamps 70 on the end when it's been upgraded. The only way it will work on your truck is if you also replace the trans cooler lines because they're different on a 14-15' than on the 16-18's. Your lines are held in by clips and mine by a plate with a 10m bolt.
@@subatomicparticle6535 I have a 2018. So I should be good correct?
@@REM-Roller Sorry I assumed you were the author of the video. My bad. Yes it should work on your truck. Just take a quick look on the driver's side cooler lines to be 100% that they don't have exposed hexagon fittings!
@@subatomicparticle6535 Thank you for the quick responses! I'll call my local dealer tomorrow. Should be able to install this weekend. I'll send you an update once I get er done!
I had the range device it works but may still not prevent the problem it’s more of prolonging it
i agree my friend👍
Totally agree, I had one in for over a year and a half, I took it out to do a scan on the obd port, forgot to put it in, in the next couple of days I got a siezed lifter and needed overhaul done.
Is that a 1500
yes 1500 serria
Nice truck besides it being a Goverment Motors Corp
I run small company. Own 14 pickup trucks. No more crap ford products
That's not a 2016. 2016 has the horizontal fog lights
it's titled as as a 16, it's a late production month, nov... i asked dealer same thing
**PSA**THE RANGE IS FALSE HOPE. HAD ONE ON MY 2017 SIERRA, IT STILL GOT A COLLAPSED LIFTER AT 70,000. MINE IS DELETED NOW SO I DONT NEED IT. NO AFM PARTS IN MY TRUCK AND NO SOFTWARE CABABLE OF TRYING TO ACTIVATE IT.
Thanks for sharing your experience, everyone's engine is different so it's good to hear from people who have tried it.
100% HP tuners MPVI3
this is a cheap way to disable for people who don't have the ability to use hp tunners, but agree that is a great way to do things tru the computer 👍
Everyone I know that has the 6L80 transmission has been replaced by 100k miles 4k 😊
mine has 152k and still like new temps stay in the 120 degree range
Because they didn't replace torque converter at the beginning. Over 300k on my two 6l80
Just had to spend $7000,00 for recons GM trans on 2017 Silverado, GM would not cover anything with with hard downshift
.
some transmission shops are not good my guy covers and warranty everything 👍
I have a 2014. Terrible terrible terrible. Transmission will fail period. No silly mod will stop because all of the transmission parts are crap. The torque converters are poor quality. Heat just accelerates their death. Terrible shifts. Can't decide what gear it is supposed to in. Crappy A/C system! Crappy headlights! Crappy electronics! Radiators are total shit! Had three under warranty!
i must be one of the lucky ones my transmission seems to shift fine , even better now i put a pulsar tunner in, and i'm at 152k i've put almost 30k on it in a year after the mods and it seems like they have improved truck in all aspects, and i tow a lot, a race car and trailer and my 30ft camper all over the state, my buddy owns a very good transmission shop and we see these trucks in there all the time for converter failure, when i do have to go visit the transmission i'm told to upgrade to 6l90 converter and of course he works his magic on the rest,
Sounds like Bad Engineering has been doing a Slow Death of these Vehicles...
I did the transmission thermostat a few years ago it seems to work great for the summer time but it sure does not like winter. My transmission feels great at about 130° but it is hard to get it there in the winter time. I went from the best truck ever made a 98 Chevy Silverado to a 2014 and these trucks are nothing more than glorified grocery getter
lol i agree my friend to get the temp up in mine i let it idle for a few minutes it brings the heat up this is after the two starts from the remote start, i let it warm up about 30min on the cold days, but mine seems ok even around 100 degrees,
Delete your a.f.m. or just keep it in 5th gear
the pulsar does the delete and i wouldn't recommend keeping it in 5th gear all the time, maybe in town be definitely not on the highway thanks for the suggestion though i appreciate it
Just avoid these trucks
everyone has their opinion sir 👍
