    Hi Crystal
    I just have a regular dryer, I made a cleaning tool from a paper towel tube just bend it flat on the end then duct tape the other end to a vacuum cleaner
    Your video was excellent.

    Try using a lingerie bag for the little socks. It helps to not have so many lost socks

      That’s a great idea. I actually do have some, but have always refrained from the extra step. This is seriously annoying though, so I might need to train the kids to make that happen.
      Thanks for the tip!

      Yeah I have two kids and their little socks will get stuck in the gasket area if I don't put them in a bag. Thankfully it's usually just one sock but yeah that happens.

      That’s what we do! In fact, we have a mesh bag on a peg by where the shoes are kept and anyone with lilliputian feet puts their socks in there when they come home at the end of the day. Once it’s full enough (but not too full), the bag gets zipped up and goes into the hamper and another is hung. This technique has the added bonus of doing a great job at keeping small socks from getting lost.

    I bought some 2 x 4 pieces of wood along with a small piece of 3/4" plywood and I made a stand for my machine. I painted it to match the color of my machine and it works great. Cost me less than $100 for the material and it allows me to clean the front lower filter very easily. I put an old Tupperware container underneath the filter opening to catch the water that comes out. Super easy process....

    This is the best explanation for the use of this machine that I have seen. I wish the salesman that sold it to me had been as thorough. I never would have bought this machine. As a 72 year old with bad knees, the last thing I need is to get down on the floor to clean a filter, not to mention trying to get back up. Now I’m stuck with it until I die.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  9 місяців тому +8

      I’m so sorry that you weren’t fully aware of the process. I doubt the salesman even knew, which is also unfortunate.
      On the note about getting up and down, I used to teach chair yoga and had a lot of older clients. Keep a chair close to you, and use it to get yourself up. Also consider that this skill needs to be worked on, even if it’s scary or uncomfortable. If you were to fall, which a few of my clients did, at home alone, being confident in your ability to help yourself up is a huge help. I’m sure you can find chair yoga content on YT. The movement is very gentle, and modified for ages and ability.
      You might also consider buying a thick mat for under your knees when cleaning the machine for extra cushion when getting up.
      I’m cheering you on from my corner of the world, and I hope you can figure out an effective way to have this machine work for you. 💕

    Have same issues on our 2 units. They should have made this area easy to access with a panel on top. I recommend NOT reinstalling the filter, take it out after each load and clear it and leave it on top of the washer hard side down, rubber gasket side up so the duct can air dry as moisture builds up in there.

    Truly helpful video! I have a suggestion regarding clearing the water collected from the filter at the bottom. I use one of those extra-large, yellow sponges which soaks up most of the water from the tray. Once the water soaks into the sponge, simply lift your tray (now mostly dry) with the sponge in it to your sink and squeeze the sponge! Easy peezy!! Thanks again for your clear, uncomplicated review. It's nice to listen to a video where the speaker talks easily without a lot (or any) "ums", "uhs", or "you knows"!! Great job!

    I don't get it. I'm a guy that designs and builds things, and I just don't understand why anything gets past the filter. If the filter fit properly and perhaps had a silicone seal, then NOTHING should get past it. Cars have had filters that seal perfectly for a hundred years. What's the problem?

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  4 місяці тому +1

      Some gets past the filter. I do think the seal is not properly designed. Additionally, a huge amount piles up and stays deep down in the machine before the filter.

    I’ve been watching reviews for this machine and I must say you do an amazing job of explaining everything. From one video I saw they said to put electrical tape (or other high temp tape) on the cracks of the black filter housing. They said it helped prevent the lint from escaping and getting on the coils.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  9 місяців тому +2

      Thank you! Yes, my husband sent me that link. I have reservations about electrical tape causing stickiness. Perhaps it won’t, but I’m going to try following my routine of brushing when the filters need cleaned, and see how it goes, for now.

    I'd totally try to shortcut by sticking the crevice attachment on my Vacuum into the lint compartment suck up that lint (Of course being careful not to damage anything by jamming it around obviously). Then I'd pull out my brush for the finishing touch followed by the vacuum again to suck up anything that got loose. My vacuum is pretty powerful.
    And while I don't have this model, I definitely started enploying the vacuum to suck out the lint... I just did a MAJOR clean out on my dryer's lint duct because i had to replace the belt anyways- Im pretty sure now that im starting fresh with no buildup, utilizing the vacuum trick will keep it much cleaner for me.

    I started my journey with this machine using an old Fuller brush designed to remove lint from a dryer. Was not long enough. I evolved to using a vacuum with an adaptor to vacuum a computer that had a long enough tube to reach the back. Had to reinforce the tube with some wire. When I take out the filter I have a crevasse tool in and suck up any lint on the edges while pulling it out. Then wipe the white side with it to get the bigger lint. Stick the tool in to suck up what it can. Check for build up with flashlight. If needed. plug in the computer attachment and go at it. Then clean up anything on the floor that snuck by. Airflow is important to heat pump efficiency. Hope you find a routine that works for you. I too have found using wrinkle care aids in perfect drying.

    I'm sorry but for the price demanded for this machine, the lint build up issue should be resolved in a better filter and casing design or self service solution. The same goes for the annoying bottom drainage filter.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  9 місяців тому

      The bottom drainage filter is similar to many front load machines. The only major problem with the servicing is getting something shallow enough to not leak under the machine if you don’t have the riser.
      I do think they will upgrade the filter systems on future models.

    Thanks for the update. I have watched all the videos you have posted so far on this GE washer/dryer combo and can’t wait to purchase my very own. I’m thinking could you use a Norwex microfiber wand to get back into the filter crevices so it wouldn’t be landing on the floor and the envirocloth to soak up the excess water to save on paper towels and keep your cork floor dry. Totally agree on using a bag to keep the socks together. I l have a Norwex house and noticed you have the mop system and are familiar with the products. Im hoping that Norwex will help me with the issues you’re currently experiencing.

    When I first got my units at launch I read the manual and noticed they recommended brushes but I didn't want to wait for shipping. So I got one locally which was similar to the one with a wooden handle that you got.
    I always wanted the other one because I could more easily get different parts and clean it really good.
    However, I do have a couple suggestions since I watched you clean the coils and you're commenting how they were moist. It's a good idea every once in awhile, especially before you clean to pull the filter out and just lit all the moist air leave the upper part of unit. Also, it's usually best practice to leave the door cracked a bit after a load, so that way all the humidity can leave if you don't plan on doing another load right away.
    This will help keep down the moisture in the filter area so that way when you're cleaning it, it won't be a wet massive lint and the lint will more easily come off the fins.
    Also, one more suggestion, the bend. The appliance guy UA-cam channel has a pretty good suggestion for our filter where we can fill the crannies between the secondary filter with either electrical tape or a bead of silicone between the snaps so that way there is a better seal.
    I love it when people actually talk about their experience and how the units change their lives because this has definitely changed my life. I haven't had a laundry machine in a long time, but I remember how awful it was transitioning laundry and even though this unit needs a little bit more cleaning or should I say if you don't clean it, it will stop working very quickly..
    Far supposed to be cleaning their dryers and washers anyway and they don't do it and eventually they die. So this unit is just making us clean it more regularly but saving us time by not having to transfer laundry. So it really annoys me when people complain about cleaning because if you keep up on it and you do it maybe every 50 cycles or less it doesn't build up that much and it only takes a couple minutes to get with a brush. Or if you have a really small vacuum you can get in there really good too.
    Yeah, one more tip, I saw you going in and out with a brush while holding the handle at an angle so it'd be pushing pressure against the fins. I'd suggest you not do that anymore and instead if you let us, there's usually a plastic sheath around the metal. You can then turn the handle to make the bristles go up and down the fins. Because if you're pulling in and out while putting pressure against the fins, you have a possibility of damaging the fins or bending them which will impede airflow so ever slightly. And this machine screams because it's an airflow beast.
    Also excuse any typos above and the length of this message. But I just wanted to leave my comment here. Like I said earlier, I've had this unit since launch last year and I really love it.

    Wow. That’s quite a bit of maintenance for that machine. Seems GE would tweet that. Still like the concept of the single unit.

      I would assume traditional units are full of lint, including the vent out of the house. This is just all contained in the unit. I actually have a friend who almost lost her house due to a fire from lint, that said, they should send the dang brushes, AT THE MINIMUM, with the machine.

Did the electrical tape trick as well, which is definitely a fault on GE's part and they should definitely release a new revision of the filter tray. But if you do keep up on it, the machine is fantastic. It has saved plenty on my energy bill. I only wash a load once, it gets them clean and the drying process is much more gentile on my clothes.

      Mine quit too, and I was on schedule with the cleaning. We cleaned the bottom drain AGAIN, and about 3 gallons of water spilled out on my floor as a result of a massive clog. (Cleaning way more than recommended.)
      Once that was cleared, it dries well again.

    so I have had mine for over a year. I thought it was amazing at first. I recommended it to a friend that has a 6 person household. He has had a technical come out 3 times to fix errors with it. When this first came out and everyone said this was new tech and they would wait for the results was right too. I fell for people saying there has been combos in other countries for many years. The fact the lint gets like that in the machine should be a class action lawsuit on them. I cant believe there isnt a fix besides buy brushes from them that doesnt come with the machine. Ive seen online were a guy used tape or silicone to see the edges of his filter to have better results. Seems like a shear money grab for GE kinda like the samsung refrigerator issue. The easy of setting and forgetting is nice. I just feel like it is on borrowed time. Ive only had a tech out once for it. I miss the days of top loaders just running forever lol. End of rant

    I just use a large beach towel under the bottom filter, soaks up the water and I just throw in the wash - I have a regular front load HE washer, not a all-in-one, and didn't realize that so many people didn't know they had to clean the filter in their washers (it's in the directions)! I do it about every 2-3 months but I also have large double coat dogs so it isn't something I can just ignore. I have even found a dime in it! When we had littles I always washed the little socks in a lingerie bag or a mesh laundry bag, they get just as clean but don't get stuck in the seal which I have had happen with regular front load washers too.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  5 місяців тому

      Because this machine does wash and dry, the filter is critical. It won’t pump out water in the wash or dry cycles if it gets clogged. I cleaned mine monthly, and that wasn’t enough.
      But yes! It’s in the manual for sure. Reading the directions provides valuable info!

    Thank you for the video. Have you checked any fault codes? I started to get the 353-fault code. Called GE and they had to send out a GE certified technician. They had to replace a part. It took the technician about 4-5 hours. The technician ran the machine to get it to reset. After it finished, I got the fault code 354. We ran a small load of laundry and now will not go into drying mode and giving the error code 353. I cleared the fault code and tried to run another small load. Again, stopped after the washing of the clothes. Would not go to drying and fault code 354. Now we have a really expensive washing machine.

      2. Clean the lower filter monthly.
      Would I buy the LG? No. I have a great appliance man, plus our own personal experience saying to never buy LG or Samsung appliances because they’re constantly in need of repair and replacement. We’ve had both last just over 5 years, never longer.

    Great machine. Sips electricity. Doesn't need a vent (no hot air pumping out the house). Frees up a slot in the circuit breaker. Frees up space in the laundry room. Just clean out the lint trap every load, pull out the filter so it drys first. We keep a vaccum in the laundry room to suck it out. I've never seen the amount of lint you show in the video, even after my college kid comes home with a mountain of laundry. To save more electricity, use a clothes line.

  • @maf11300
    @maf11300 9 місяців тому +3

    Just ordered the brushes and a vacuum hose attachment.
    This is the one area that GE missed the mark. The filter allows lint to get through gaps around the filter assembly.
    For those that were turned off by the lint cleaning, remember you have to keep up on the lint in a normal dryer too. At leat here the lint build up is in one place.
    I am a widower and this has made my laundry chore a lot easier. Other than the lint thing this machine is amazing. Anyone considering replacing their washer and dryer should consider this or one of the other combo from LG.
    If you live off the grid, the energy savings alone are worth the extra care. An average load uses about 1KW to wash and dry compared to 4KW for an electric dryer.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  9 місяців тому

      I actually agree with you. This machine is forcing us to take care of lint, while older machines allowed up to feel like we completed the job by wiping off the filter. In reality, that was not the entirely of the job, because vent hoses were often full of it, beyond what we could see.
      I’m glad you’re happy with your machine! We definitely appreciate the ease of use around here too!

      No, absolutely not. Our regular dryer had way more lint on the filters than this one does. I’d say it’s closer to 1/5 the lint in one cycle.
      I think this machine just forces you to deal with it instead of filling up a dryer vent hose that you can’t physically see. We used to have lint stint visible on the outside of our house at the vent exit, even with cleaning the hose. This isn’t even close.

It was great and then all of a sudden the power button started blinking and the screen said GE profile. that’s all it would do and after a ge tech came out after two weeks he said he was gonna order some parts and tht was two months ago cause apparently they were back ordered. I haven’t been able to do laundry for months I’ve lost numerous things that couldn’t be saved cause I have a lot of rescue animals which is why I invested in such an expensive washer combo in the first place. From start to finish I feel like I’ve gotten a terrible run around from lowes and ge. I loved it the week it worked but I feel like it’s the worst 3000 bucks I ever spent.😢 I really hope they fix it like they said and I can love it again cause I see nothing but great reviews on it guess I just got the dud😂

    This machine is supposed to be ADA compliant. Researching the combo from the A.D.A. perspective, is this cleaning something could do from a wheelchair or with one hand? My main concern is the drain filter. Getting down on the floor and back up is a issue.

    • @thehometownhomestead
      @thehometownhomestead  6 місяців тому

      No. Absolutely not. Firstly, that drain filter needs cleaned monthly, regardless of what the directions say. If it gets clogged, it can cause water to backup inside and will flood your floor. Had I been in a wheelchair, there is zero chance I could have managed it. (IF using the pedestal, that might change my opinion.)
      Secondly, you will probably have issues cleaning the inside of the filter shown here. It takes a lot of maneuvering to get a good view of what’s going on.
      Lastly, mine is currently broken down. “Critical compressor error,” and the part is on a SIX WEEK back order. We are currently 10 days into no laundry at home.
      I will have an update coming soon on how this pans out, as we are waiting on GE to decide what’s next.
      At this moment, I would not recommend. They do not have the parts available for repair, and THAT is a huge problem for anyone looking at this machine, ADA or not. 🥴
