I was a bit skeptic, when this machine first came out. My wife really wants one of these machines but I've just been hung up on the idea that the lint would get past the trap and into the other components of the machine. However, even after 1 year, it seems that you are still quite happy with the machine! That weather seal trick seems to solve the issue. I appreciate the updated video and review!
I just purchased this unit for a secondary washer/dryer unit for our basement. I intentionally scheduled out the delivery for 2 months out so I could mull over my decision between the Samsung(my favorite), the LG, and this… I’m pretty comfortable with my decision now after this video. I too am a mechanical engineer, so I can relate. The best review I’ve seen! Bravo 👏🏿 👏🏿
Nice video. We have had this unit since April 2024. So 90 days as I post this. This unit has saved us about $150 a month on our power bill since April. I clean the lint trap filter or what ever you call it after every cycle. Have not done the filter upgrade but it will happen soon. G E knows they have a problem with the lent filter. This washer/dryer has been out over a year now and they have done nothing to fix this problem.
Does anyone else find it odd that all of the research and development (testing) they did on this before introducing it and they magically never ran into the lint getting stuck in the housing problem during all that testing... seems so weird, doesn't it?
We purchase this Ultrafast back in June and I had seen about the lint trap modifications others had posted. I used a 1 inch foam door seal on the back from one of the video’s and that compress’s into that back cut out and has stopped a lot of lint buildup in that area of the trap. Before you would have quite a bit of buildup in that cut and really hard to clean it out without those lint brushes or vacuum adapter. The video with the foam seal also had thin door seal for top and bottom. So far i have not put that modification in play, however just might after watching your video or least the top seal. Still surprised GE has not issued an update lint trap with a compressible gasket seal around that entire lint trap. Too many video’s addressing this problem and CRICKETS from GE to give customer service! Would go along way that GE is supporting the customer with such an update and showing concern! Nice review after 1 year of ownership. Nice presentation and delivery! Keep us updated!
I've had this machine for a year as well. I love the convenience. It's just my husband and myself so unless I'm doing spring or fall cleaning, I can get away with only 1 or 2 loads of laundry a week. No more forgetting clothes in the washer overnight! I will have to implement the fix on the filter. I clean mine after every use, but even with a vacuum adapter it's hard to reach all the nooks and crannies in the area where the filter sits. I think that design could be better to make it more accessible. Overall I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Good review. Thanks for doing it.
I’ve one of these for just over a year. And it is a games changer. Love it. I did also add some weather stripping around the filter as that is the one downfall of the machine. You can also gently rinse the fins with water and that water flowed down to the clean out at the bottom.
Great review. Well done. I had an LG version many years ago and LOVE the convenience of not transferring clothes. You get use to shaking out the clothes and the plus is wrinkles are less an issue (admittedly I am not overly particular). Plus, they are more effective at cleaning and gentler on clothes. I am in the process of remodeling and will be getting two units. Not a cheap solution but saves time and makes laundry more of a joy.
Have had mine for over a year as well. I live by myself with my dog. So far no major issues. Holds clothes after wash for 6hrs without them smelling like death
Great video! I have one of these too. I use wrinkle care and more dry for every load and it’s awesome! It tumbles the close every now and then after the dry cycle completes and keeps the wrinkles away!
@cnbr494 thanks! Yes my wife informed me she does use both of those settings now as well and agrees they are worthwhile. Glad it's working well for you.
Have had mine nearly as long and for the first time ever I am free from the drudgery of laundry. I don’t have a schedule any more and everything gets washed and put away so no laundry piles up. It washes better than any machine I’ve ever had and I always have bought high end. Really curious how everyone else is liking it or not. Our laundry closet has a 2 story vertical run for the dryer vent, the primary reason for trying this machine because it was up to me to clean it twice a year because paying a professional to do it was $400+ a pop and most workers refused to go on the roof. The lint trap works great for us, no more maintenance than the old dryer lint trap and is a bit easier because I don’t have to bend down to get it out. I have the identical lint spots on the inside and didn’t add any gasket - I suspect only that one small area gets lint on it and it doesn’t look any different from week 2 to nearly a year later so I don’t expect any problem from it. Dries everything every time so I’m happy thus far. The controls are simple and visible and don’t lack anything. I can glance down the hallway upstairs and see the color of the dial to know it it’s still washing or nearly dried, and my Apple Watch alerts me when it’s 5 minutes left and finished. I’m excited to see competition out there now but GE put everything at eye level and made it all work well, I haven’t seen anything better yet. This thing is so wonderful it could die every five years and I”d just replace it because it’s given me my valuable time back. It just works. Toss in laundry, shut door, push button, come back and it’s all fluffy and warm and wrinkle free whether it’s just finished or has been tumbling on wrinkle care for hours.
I have this washer. I’ve had it for four months now and I have absolutely no problems with mine because I’ve literally watched over and over again every single video that’s out there and I have a maintenance routine. I was surprised when you pulled out the filter and it had all of that lint on it. When the manual says to clean the filter after every wash You also get a notification on screen that ask you, did you clean the filter? You must be bypassing it. I clean the lint filter after every wash. I also wipe my door seal out because lint does collect there. I do that after every load. Every 2 to 3 weeks maybe I will get my vacuum and I vacuum out the compartment where the lint filter is and the coils with the soft brush. And about every two months, I will empty the filter at the bottom and get any lint that has built up there That sounds like a lot, but it’s really not once you get into a routine. This machine cost too much money not to.
@@NaterTater Aah! I’m sure you’re right. Must’ve been a recommendation from one of the hundred videos I watched. I had used the tape like one of the videos had recommended, but I like your idea better so I ordered the foam seal because even with the tape I’ve noticed lint was still getting through . Great video though
i have a GE ultrafast that i enjoy, but there is one gotcha that i don't think any channel has addressed yet: it's not lint, but we had to have a service visit and the tech ordered new lint filters for us. i'm NOT talking about the black removable filter, but the actual lint filter housing. for some reason, the mesh developed a build up that blocked airflow and was degrading drying performance. i don't know what it is, maybe it's some kind of fabric softener residue? we scrubbed it clean while waiting for new filters to arrive (was quite a bit of an effort) and it brought it back to normal, but something to keep an eye on.
I just got one of these machines on a recommendation while in a time crunch to move into a different place that didn't have pre-existing hookups, but managed to get something in place for a machine like this. At this moment in time I haven't had a chance to see if GE ever did anything to fix this issue. I know with my old Blueair HEPA filters, they have a built in gasket around their filters to make an airtight seal and ensure the filter is as effective as possible. One way to spot the fakes off of Amazon is they are missing stuff like this gasket and don't seal up to the unit they are supposed to. But with outfits like GE it seems they never thought to seal up their filter in the first place when lint and air conditioning coil fins don't mix well, so will definitely be looking into this on a brand new unit and see what all I need to do for a proper seal. It just makes sense and avoids problems down the road.
Looking at things in more detail, I think I can see the flaw. While there are seals in key areas, they are along two different axis's. The problem is the seal on the lint trap to keep air inside the machine from mixing with the outside is a snug fit and looks to push the rear seal away from the stops that it mates up with. So seeing it cannot make full contact, the main filter seal cannot mate up with the surface it is supposed to mate up with and thus lent can blow by and get into the air conditioning coils. A bit of a brain damaged design to be quite frank. Really, should have a flexible hing like deal so that when air is moving through the filter, it can move independent of the outer handle and seal up properly with the air pressure pushing it against the surface it is supposed to mate up with to create a seal. The filter body fits loosely into the machine besides the tight fit at the outer end mentioned above, so the method of putting thin foam tape around it should create a seal around the outside instead of relying on the failed seal in the back.
I picked up some weatherizing foam tape at the local hardware store. I put it around the filter, creating a nice seal around it. Did a load of towels. On post inspection the surface of the coils looked clean. The towels were perfectly dry. A fair amount of lint in the trap from the towels, but far less than a traditional gas dryer. It seems this problem is actually pretty easy to fix. You really don't want those coils clogged with lint and the design of the lint filter is simply flawed, but correctable. This is a brand new machine, so it is not like the original problem was fixed. It is not. You need to take immediate action.
I'm in a condo my utility room is from the 1980s. Have a washer on one end dryer opposite side of the room. I always had an upright washer too. When my washer breaks I think I would like that washer. I bet ge will redesign the lint filter. I bet they are going to have a new redesigned unit soon. I love watching your channel because you have a lot of interesting projects. I'm a gadget NERD 😅😅😅
I noticed when you showed the detergent drawer that there was left over water remaining in the part where you pour in the beach or fabric softener. Too many areas of concern for my liking with those filters , condensor plugging and the whole a/c unit.
So sick of the subpar filters on heat pump dryers. My whirlpool's secondary filter seals terribly and I have had to disassemble the dry to clean the fins. The fact that the coils are on the top makes cleaning it so much easier, I had to take the drum out of my dryer plus more just to get to the coils in the Whirlpool. Looking forward to my washer dying so I can pick this machine or something similar up.
I don't have this model... but I have had a front load washer since 2005... It doesn't have the auto dispense... One thing I'm wondering about with the auto dispense on any washer model that has it is this: Ok, so when I'm done doing laundry... one of the things I do is take the detergent tray out and dump the residual water that collects in it... and I place it on top of the washer completely out of its compartment so air can flow through there....but it looks like this wouldn't be possible in cases where there is an auto dispense.. I also made the mistake YEARS and YEARS ago .. I thought my machine broke because there was a small stream of water coming down the bottom of the door...I learned that if any lint/crud collects on that window it breaks the seal... so I make sure to keep that clean and it's never leaked again.
Thanks you for the Nice review!! I’m planning on getting one in the next few months. Question: You mentioned needing a water hookup in your master closet for this unit. Who ever has a water supply in their master closet? Never heard of that. Thanks again!
Ha, yes very true but I have water in one of the master closet walls since the master bath is on the other side. So it's easy to add the supply and drain (and power).
I'm not sure I am fully following. Are you referring to your water pipes? If so yes, they can handle the flow rate of this machine. Let me know if you meant something else.
@NaterTater yes I meant the water pipes, thanks. Would you say that water pipes would have to be newer pipes to handle regular washing machines? Again thanks a lot :-)
@RobAlfieInostrozaLindley no, water pipes havent really changed much since then as far as flow rate goes. If anything newer home fixtures use less water than back then.
I have had nothing but problems with mine. First few problems were corrected with some of the remediation techniques in this video (Lint filter tape, keeping coils clean, draining, etc) but it doesn't seem to matter. My clothes are periodically really wet (not shake dry wet) and they almost always smell like mildew even when removed immediately after a drying cycle. I am trying a cup of bleach on self-clean to see if that helps but this thing is so flawed. The lint situation should have prevented this thing from going to market. I really don't understand how y'all are living with this thing.
@kaywoollen yes modification always risks warranty coverage but most states have clauses that say the manufacturer must prove your modification caused the failure to deny the warranty claim.
Thank you for the video. Have you checked any fault codes? I started to get the 353-fault code. Called GE and they had to send out a GE certified technician. They had to replace a part. It took the technician about 4-5 hours. The technician ran the machine to get it to reset. After it finished, I got the fault code 354. We ran a small load of laundry and now will not go into drying mode and giving the error code 353. I cleared the fault code and tried to run another small load. Again, stopped after the washing of the clothes. Would not go to drying and fault code 354. Now we have a really expensive washing machine.
The 353 error is often caused by a clogged lint filter. Make sure that you are washing both the gray mesh filter AND the black foam filter. They can get clogged with fabric softener residue and small pieces of lint. Ge has a video on their UA-cam channel showing how to wash them. When clean,, you should easily be able to see through the mesh filter when held up to light.
A few options from easy to complex. Easy is just stuff a rag in on the inside and call it a day (the outside typically has a flap that is closed when the dryer is off). Or you could opt to caulk the outside flap shut or opt to remove the vent ducting all together.
Question: I am researching this model and saw a comment that the heat pump technology creates a "dampness" in the room. Have you noticed any heat or humidity difference in your laundry room with the combo unit?
I bought one last fall. I wanted one with the least amount of space and hassle for my cabin. Thus I have not use it a lot but when I have used it it has been totally awesome. Please note that there is a wrinkle care setting that will keep your clothes tumbled so they don’t wrinkle up. I think it works for up to eight hours but I’m not sure. I am definitely going to add the foam seal. Plus another guy watched used food grade silicone gasket maker to make a seal between the foam filter housing and the overall housing. The more dust you block the better! UA-cam video # ipeBsqiKWsg
yes good point. I did try the wrinkle care back when new and I dont think it actually worked. As in the feature wasn’t active. But i never tried it since then and did a few software updates so its probably active now. You're the 2nd person to mention it!
@@NaterTater BTW, I just shared this video with the one I referenced in the original post. Slapping the face for wondering why it took so long for me to figure that was a good idea.🤷♂ It will be interesting to see if you get any traffic from that.
I am wondering if you have had to clean the drain hose in the back? I have two cats and my filter in front needs to be cleaned every wash. Maybe I also need to add that tape to my filter as well. i now have an error code 353.
@kennyzail6224 that's a lot of cat hair! I would guess the heat exchanger is clogged, use a flashlight and look in there with the link filter pulled out. The fault code 353 on a GE Profile UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer can indicate a clogged heat exchanger, critical compressor overheating, or a restriction in the drain area: clogged heat exchanger, critical compressor overheating, and restriction in the drain area.
@@NaterTater What do you do if you get this error? I have been getting this error on my unit on every cycle I run, and this is after a thorough cleaning of the lint filter and inside the lint compartment. I also drain the water at the bottom.
2 of these might be better than 1 washer and 1 dryer since you can't wash and 2 loads simultaneously with only 1 washer and one dryer but you can apparently with 2 of these.
To sum up my other comment on this with a new mache (August of 2024), the design of the lint filter is flawed, causing it to not seal properly on these units. The air conditioning coils wringing the moisture out of the air and thus the clothes don't work when clogged with lint and thus your clothes won't dry. My solution for now at least has been to pick up weatherization foam tape from the local hardware store and put it around the lint trap, creating a nice seal around the lint trap. So GE never fixed this root cause of clothes not drying. It is stupid really as it shouldn't be hard to get this right. But you can do something that will really help and it is cheap and easy to do: create your own seal with foam tape. It is vitally important you do this right away with your machine.
leave the house with it running i would never trust a washer or dryer if you do better get some fire and water damage insurance please don't ask me how i know

Any specs on energy consumption for a full wash and dry? Vs a two machine set up? Thanks
I am sure there are but I dont have them in front of me
I have had nothing but problems with mine. I really don't understand how y'all are living with this thing.
just wondering if modifying the filter as you suggest would void the warranty?
@kaywoollen yes modification always risks warranty coverage but most states have clauses that say the manufacturer must prove your modification caused the failure to deny the warranty claim.
@@kaywoollen just pull the small insulation foam off before you call for service 😉
You mentioned you would put a link for the foam...sorry cant find it. I would love to get the exact one you bought. Thanks

@@jamesshelleywijnhamer19 should be under warranty. I'd call GE again.
How do you seal up the old dryer vent, inside and outside, once this new washer/dryer is installed?
A few options from easy to complex. Easy is just stuff a rag in on the inside and call it a day (the outside typically has a flap that is closed when the dryer is off). Or you could opt to caulk the outside flap shut or opt to remove the vent ducting all together.
@@NaterTater Thanks so much!
You can't use an air compressor or canned air to clean the lint out of the thins?
@@bonitabromeliads no. Vacuum, yes
Question: I am researching this model and saw a comment that the heat pump technology creates a "dampness" in the room. Have you noticed any heat or humidity difference in your laundry room with the combo unit?
@kathysmith1159 it does not. It's a closed system and no air or dampness is expelled from the machine.
What's the one year fail rate on these? Missus M wants one I'm on the fence.
@hooknbullet no clue but from my experience if you seal up the lint trap door and clean the lint it will last for many years.
@@Leonardokite thanks!
Did you take out the clean out trap all the way? The one at the bottom right of the front of the machine, behind the pop off door?
Can I wash with laundry pods?
@@chellybutcher yes products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=000064163#:~:text=Use%20only%20HE%20(High%2DEfficiency)%20detergent.&text=Like%20with%20all%20our%20frontload,in%20the%20dispenser%20drawer%20compartments.
2 of these might be better than 1 washer and 1 dryer since you can't wash and 2 loads simultaneously with only 1 washer and one dryer but you can apparently with 2 of these.
That is a potential and we might add one upstairs to accomplish that.
Purchased in June now the door seal is leaking

This machine is trash, drain pump broke twice before first year was up. I regret buying.
@@-raymond-2337 was it repaired under warranty?
Yes but both times I was left with a load of laundry in a pool of water. First time I flooded garage. The technology is just not there…they almost got it but it’s a miss. My wife hates it because delicates are so easily wrinkled. Repair guy said the same thing…he said I’ll be waiting for the next model because he is seeing a lot of issues.
Also when it breaks it takes two weeks for GE to get a contractor out so I’m going to the laundry mat.
I don't like the combo ever, it pissed me off and it broken down a month!! That's it. I will never buy it ever. I switched the front and dryer loaf is Electrolux the best ever.
