Hey all. In this video, I stated that Kryme DDOSed the APOS website. This was based on accusations made at the time, but Kryme has since reached out and denied these claims. I should have presented this as an allegation rather than a definitive fact, and I wanted to clarify that here. I've since removed this section from the video.
@colonelloRS The vet world chest was untouched. He wasn't the only one to break the chest but it seemed like there was an agreement to leave the Vet world chest working, I played a lot during this time and only recall the chest on the Vet world breaking once and the servers would be restarted once every few months (server restarts fixed the chest). Bugged NPC's were a big problem too. The longer the server went without a restart the more NPCs became un-attackable
"The mods saw that one player was trying to finish a quest, so left the servers up" that's so sweet! i wonder if any other players helped them complete the quest- "the other players thought that maybe the mods would keep the game up forever if this guy never finished the quest, so they started trying to interfere with every quest step" nevermind.
Long live private servers. Honestly, the biggest nails in the coffin were removing classic's F2P and then shutting down the ability to play if you didn't log in in 2005/2006. It was staggering since then.
There were tons of bugs and content was literally broken until server restarts due to bug abuse. The lack of support for the game was its demise. The good thing is though, private servers. I've got nothing against them. I even ran my own so a few friends could mess around on it with a local server and low ping since most RSPS are hosted on the other side the world to me.
The lore of these bugs is cool to consider in-game, a cursed chest and a demonic summoning ritual. Using black magic to teleport unsuspecting players from all over the world to their doom and no one knows what is happening to them lol
The nostalgia... logging onto classic in 2002 and playing to 2014, it felt so magical at first. It's an experience none of us will forget. Genuinely the best game I've played
I have never played nor do I think I have the desire to play runescape, but finding your channel a few days ago has moved it up my list of most fascinating Game franchises I've seen. Thank you can't wait to learn more👏🏿
A solution for the chest could've been just having the game servers reboot automatically once every 2-3 days. It would've probably fixed some other instance-based issues as well. It's a bandaid fix, but would've gotten the job done to make players lives a bit easier up until its shutdown.
This was a legendary episode. Can't believe there's a story this major about RS history that hasn't been told yet! The Underground Pass glitch was people straight up playing God; apparently no lure or tricking the player required. Insane.
Honestly having a lot of trouble feeling sorry for the people whose bots got demon'd. What a funny way to mess with bots and take their stuff. That's hilarious.
Wow that's wild, I mean technically the tech debt was part of the reason indirectly because it cost them too much to fix and work with. R.I.P Classic I was there for the final shutdown and saw the Titus stream at the time. That was really nice of them to leave it open for him! :D I also saw the video on that warping bug, that was so wild to me then and still is!
I miss classic pking so much. almost relying on "3 hitting" someone or "catching them" was so fun. also iban staff pking was amazing since magic and melee can happen simultaneously
I don't remember exactly when you started adding the cutaways to irl you (it seems recent?) but they surprisingly add a lot of personality and polish to the videos
ever since i learnt about that glitch i'm really curious why the teleport was even needed? Why did the player need to be on that square? My bro has met Andrew Gower and if I ever get a chance I'm going to ask him
Classic certainly makes for a great social experiment. Really shows that if there's no form of enforcement around then people simply do what they want. No one really thinks about longevity or how their actions will ultimately harm them.
I havent played runescape in years, but I always feel compelled to watch these documentary type videos on what will always be my favorite childhood game. Classic was such a weird thing to play compared to RS2, I remember trying back in 2008/2009. Anybody else remember playing it AFTER rs2, but before EOC?
RIP FunOrb 😭 I miss Armies of Geilinor and Arcanist sooooo much it hurts my chest. I was so close to rank 1 in the leaderboards, I even passed Zezima and took their spot at #2. Damn I miss those games.
I really never understand why Jagex could not have just assigned one single mod to check up on classic once a week. That's it. That's all it would have required. A couple of hours a week to reset the server or to fix any little bugs that crop up but nope seems that was too much to ask. It's a shame. Much as the RSC private servers are fun they are just not the same as the real thing. And yes it was full of bots and glitches before it was shut down but I still miss it.
Because paying a dev 60k+ a year to update a game with 200 average players 95% of which being bots is actually insane. Your talking about paying someone 60k to update a game mode only about 10 actual people are playing at any given time. Not to mention by fixing one thing you could break 10 others considering how old the code was there was probably all kinds of things integrated with each other and things that wouldn't make sense to do in today's world or without context of why they did that at the time.
I am still so heartbroken to have funorb be taken offline, it had so many good memories for younger me and I wanted to revisit it for nostalgia reasons but then I found out it was offline permanently

Yeah dude said that sarcastically like he was annoyed by the popup not realizing it's a good thing lol
Because of your annoyance with pop-ups, rs classic got shutdown. How dare you not tolerate 8,000 trackers and nonstop pop ups!
Not really, it only makes big companies ask first. Smaller ones just do it
The real reason for the shutdown was because the Sandwich Lady wasn't in Classic, so they realised there was really no point in playing.
