  • Today we're taking the Curtis C-46 Commando for a flight from Tauranga, New Zealand, and heading north to explore the Coromandel peninsula. Should be fun!

Nice trip. You flew over my holiday shack at Whitianga. The stock msfs scenery is pretty good for such a small locale with the mudflats and anchored boats fairly accurate. 59:28

The DC-3 has a hydraulic selector that you have to reposition after takeoff to use the Sperry but my C-46 has no such lever (It is mentioned in the pdf though) and seems to work fine without it! The super charger levers don't do anything but when you pass 10000 MSL the super chargers go to high automatically but the levers don't move so I just do it manually to simulate it. There is a blurb about the differences between auto start and manual in the pdf. I always do a full manual or spawn in on runway with engines on. No problems so far. I have noticed you have to run in auto rich for a while on a manual start and the fuel load changes when set before spawning into the sim. I always check my weights and fuel load in sim prior to any other checklist item.

make sure aircraft is in perfect trim (including ailerons) . set selected heading and use AIL knob just to the right of HDG knob to set the bank angle to be used to turn onto desired heading . use 10 to 15 max for large course change. if it doesn't capture use AIL to steer onto heading with small bank angles. 3 to 5. Reseting heading indicator with D key will require re capture with AIL

One of the most beautiful places to fly in NZ.

If you are having trouble with manual starts or engines cutting off at weird times check your fuel load out after after the plane has spawned in (sim running not the main menu) and check the fuel x feed valves on either side of the center pedestal. ctrl + 4 view. Like a lot of planes the fuel must be set in the plane in the sim ( not the select menu ) using the weight and balance. and depending on your peripherals and key binds the x feeds can cause both engines to pull from same side tank ( often times one that might be set very low)

I experienced the same problem with the engines, I had to make sure both cross feeds were on.

I had the engine issue as well Jon, frustrated the hell out of me, I even had the left engine cut out on takeoff roll , I would imagine the real thing could be temperamental but I think this is a bug of sorts. Happy flying,Gary

Try starting engines in full rich, not auto , as per in game checklist. works fine for me. Perhaps the auto start is try to emulate a hot restart? cold engines must be run extremely rich.

I also had trouble with engine start. Also the autopilot was weird for me.

The problems I am having are with not seeing any turn rate or slip indication and no way to set the VOR OBI course and the glide slope not working with ILS (I just get localizer only) . I know VOR was in it's infancy in the 40s and ILS was too so it's no big deal. I don't want GPS in a vintage plane. I use ADF/NDBs and VORs as NDBs and Winds aloft forecast, an e6b whizz wheel and a stop watch . It does indeed have some bugs but totally worth $9 bucks US! Edit GS is working now!! ????

I know it’s only 10 bucks but man it has a lot of little bugs for what it is like in mine if I cut the booster pumps it will eventually kill the engines and I couldn’t get the speery autopilot to work wouldn’t hold altitude or climb or descend when adjust the knobs
