  • Our launch is postponed due to a broken Travel-Lift, so we take a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore Brazil and check our bucket list. You won't believe how!
    #sailing #sailboatlife #bucketlist #boatrestoration #itajai
    The launch of our sailboat after it's repair and restoration is postponed, due to a problem with the boatyard's travel-lift.
    While making finishing touches to our boats fiberglass repairs, Roxy grabs her camera and gives us a dogs eye view with "Roxy Cam" in a walk around the marina and the river in Itajai.
    We have a rare chance to check off a bucket list item, motorcycle touring in South America! Our new friends in Itaji loan us a BMW GS1200 touring bike to hit the back roads of southern Brazil. It is amazing.
    Then we learn about Guinea Fowls and Geckos in our Airbnb. Waking up with coffee in a new place while traveling is always an adventure. Kate also get's a haircut, check out the transformation.
    Next, with the extra time due to the breakdown in the boatyard, Curtis get's a chance to go mountain biking with his new friend Andre and Kate hits the water to learn to surf in Itajia, Brazil's spectacular surfing waves.
    Finally we are able to finish up a few last minute tasks, like installing our re-painted steering wheel and inserting the rudder as the boat is finally lifted. We take her for a test run in the river and back her into the dock to begin making preparations to head further south, to Uruguay!

    About Us
    We never intended to become influencers or start a new UA-cam sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings.
    Kate and Curtis both learn how to sail when they were young. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us.
    We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J (it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn.
    We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords.

    Love the Roxy Cam and Kate's hair, disappointed to hear about your drone, elated you are leaving the yard, heading for Punta del Estes. In the old days the Whitbread sailors all said Punta del Estes was their favorite port.

      Thanks Rauf! We expected this to happen to the drone at some point, just thought it would be offshore in 25-30, not at the beach in a sunny 5 knot day :-) We are excited for Uruguay, as the Whitbread stories in the old sailing magazines planted the seed which grew into Sweet Ruca's RTW adventure!

    Kate - HAIR! I like flowing feminine locks as much as anyone. But for practicality on a BOAT? I'm sure a shorter sculpted do would look good on you and be even easier to manage.
    "The trip towards Cape Horn is still on." GOOD! That's the reason I initially subbed you two. And now there are more reasons.

Curtis did a great job on the repairs please don’t bump into any more whales. I’ll stick with my rudder well protected by the full keel. Brazil looks like a blast I’m sure you were sad to leave. Looks like a very good repair job, given what you have available. Learned a lot about J boat construction (and repair) as well as what to look for when something hits your rudder. Many thanks for sharing the details. Sorry you had to stop short of Porto Bello (a port made infamous by Jimmy Buffets Cowboy in the Jungle). Been singing that song for 40 years and always wondered what it really looked like and where the sailors raise hell, night and day. Glad you were able to make the best of what came your way.

    Cool video! I always wondered how boat designers would deal with a lightning strike on a fibergrass boat. These copper straps explain a lot. I suppose those are connected to the mast and/or rigging all the way to a point where the current can escape to the water (= electrical ground).

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Рік тому +4

      Thanks jfv65! Turns out the copper has something to do with the SSB tuner as well. All of the boats metal fittings, mast, pulpits, and rigging all have grounding (bonding) wires which connect everything to the water through the propeller shaft strut.

    Curious fact: the blue sphere on the Brazilian flag is based on an armillary sphere, a sailing device that was on the old Imperial Brazilian flag, coming from the flag of Portugal for obvious reasons ( how important sailing was on Portugal history)
    The stars are real stars in the Southern Hemisphere over the sky of Rio de Janeiro on the day of independence, but seen from outside (like the armillary sphere)

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Рік тому +2

      WOW! That is awesome Rogério! We always thought the Brazilian flag was beautiful, but never knew the background. The history is wonderful, especially for sailors, and makes the flag even more enjoyable. Thank you for this! 🇧🇷 🇺🇸 🌎

    • @rogeriopenna9014
      @rogeriopenna9014 Рік тому

      @@SailingSweetRuca Brazil independence was a little different, let's say. A little background
      Before becoming independent in 1822, the entire Portuguese court fled Napoleon to Brazil and Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the Portuguese Empire.
      Brazil became United Kingdom with Portugal, and thus ceased to be a colony around 1816... long after Napoleon had been defeated. Because the Royal Family was really liking living in Brazil.
      The Portuguese King was forced to return to Portugal to retain the theme but left his elder son in Brazil and advised him to declare Brazilian independence in case Portugal tried to make Brazil a colony again, because he knew otherwise Brazil would go to a war for independence, like the Spanish colonies and USA.
      That's what happened. Brazil became independent of Portugal but the Emperor was of the Portuguese Royal family and also heir to the Portuguese throne although the constitution forbid him of being both.
      Well, the point i am trying to make is that there was no big rupture like USA or Spanish colonies.
      The Empire of Brazil flag had the green of Bragança House, yellow of the Habsburg house (Dom Pedro I wife, queen consort, was Marie Leopoldine from Austria), coffee branches (Brasil is the largest coffee producer in the world for 200 years already), and the center of the Imperial Flag has symbols found on the Portuguese Flag. The Christ Cross and the Armillary sphere
      The Flag was changed when Brasil became a republic. Colors green and yellow remained but their meaning was changed and the Armillary sphere, which was a drawing of a real one of Iron, became a modern Armillary sphere, really representing the sky, but from "outside". That motto in a white band in the flag is the equator in the Armillary sphere, where it was a metal band.

    Wow lots of stuff in this episode. I don't know what to comment on first... Well first of all I've got to say I hate losing a drone. The Splash Drone is a little more expensive, and bright red, but the cool thing is they are pretty much waterproof and don't sink when they fall out of the sky over water. An additional alternative to DJI, which I myself have gone this other route, I buy cheap like $50-$120 drones. There a lots of pretty decent "No name" drones out there that even support 4k at times. Don't expect much from them, but hey they are not a $900 loss, but you will continue to lose drones no matter what. I don't know anyone that uses them that hasn't lost at least one quite frankly. Anyway that is my two cents about drones. The Roxy cam was neat, and even my kitty watched it for all of two seconds(Really don't expect much from a lazy feline audience). The camera on the dog adds a little bit of flair from a little closer to the ground!!! Its too bad you two can't have a light motorcycle, e-bikes, or maybe two folding bikes. Maybe you do and I don't remember, but we have two folding bikes (Zizzo Via's)we take with us on the Catalina. Plus an electric Swagtron scooter. We'd love ebikes, but the laws where we sail the boat out of pretty much say no to anything but an actual bicycle. That's Charleston SC mind you, they kicked out all the ebike and scooter rentals. I noticed the grounding strap you two had to work with. It is pretty beefy, and you two aren't hanging out in Florida or Panama...so...it isn't as super important right now. Nigel Calder says to use at least a #6 braided copper to a grounding point from all avenues that might bring down electricity from the mast. The braiding increases the momentary carrying capacity from a lightning strike as it increases the conductors surface area. I have no idea how your J is set up, but I thought I'd pass that along. I still haven't done anything with my boat as a tree, blown apart from a lightning strike, sliced through one of my rental properties like a hot knife through butter! So much for my launch plans....

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  Рік тому +1

      Oh man! sorry to hear about the boat and rental property! What a bummer on the bike laws in Charleston. Takes the fun away, but I get it about the rentals, those things were really handy for us in Tenerife, but they sure made a mess out of the side walks with then scattered everywhere. Good news, DJI reviewed the flight log and sent us a new drone under warranty as it was a "fly away error." An impressive customer service act IMO. We did look at the Splash and have thought about it, maybe we can try one in the future?

      @SailingSweetRuca  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jeff! You're welcome!!! The drone was calibrated recently and we had just done several flights in the area, even some very long range ones (we had awesome footage of the harbor and ships). We actually sent the log files and cached video from the drones fatal flight to DJI, and they replaced the drone as they determined it was a software error....more on that in upcoming episodes, unless it hits the cutting rooms teak & holly floorboards!

      Hi Randy! Glad you enjoyed the episode. You dig the long hair, eh? It's wonderful until it is 40 degrees outside and won't dry at 55 south!
