Great video Andy and very timely! Im on project now and need to collaborate with musicians online... your review was extremely helpful. Thanks so much!
Something you didn't cover was operating system support. I was so excited, I finally found something to stream my friends midi signals into my daw live, and its mac only. LOL. Is there anything else you have found since this video, that supports streaming midi live, and is windows?
Great comparison. I use ListenTo all the time for my radio show record (during lockdown) and for remote collaboration and sharing of audio around the world. Awesome product!
@@AndyDollerson Hey Andy. No but it would work very well. I'm recording my radio show from home at the moment due to the lockdown and it's great for that which in many ways is similar to a podcast. It does need a DAW for each user as it's a plugin. There are a wealth of programs out there in addition to those mentioned in this video. If you only want a good audio recording then I can also recomment CleanFeed. It's intended for radio shows but can record from most inputs (including phones I think via a weblink) and can output multitrack audio. It can also have cart items for music or jingle playback which you can also record to their own track so a cool product
I use ListenTo as well, but find some issues with stability and connectivity. I've got my buffers set properly (as near as I can tell), but the session(s) sometimes deteriorates over time; latency goes up, and occasionally the audio gets scrambled so bad we have to log out entirely and start over. My internet connection is very fast and solid (160 DL, 20 Upload), but my client's is on a home-consumer cable system. (Fast enough to stream movies, so it should be fast enough for just audio.) Even so, when I monitor the signal on my own system, it's also got the same issues. I wrote to them, hoping for some more info and helpful hints, tweaks, etc.
@@joehannigan9788 huh that's weird. I've chatted with loads of people about using Listento, and no-one has reported those issues. It's been by far the most stable and solid platform for us. The only thing I can think is wi-fi might be an issue.
Aloha Brother - I really appreciate this video. I have used AM and SW; not Soundwhale. I am wondering if you are aware of software that will accurately sync a musician in another studio playing along with music coming from my studio over the internet, and having the musician record into my DAW. I know AM can do that, but they don't have well-engineered syncing process. It's is only a little better than guessing. Thank you so much. Michael
Aloha! Yeah Soundwhale does that for sure, so that’s definitely worth a demo! AM can totally do it, but yeah it is a bit of a ball ache with remembering what channels to mute and have open. I’m sure there’s other stuff out there but IMHO audiomovers is worth the figuring out to get stability and sound quality with such flexibility. Soundwhale may be overkill with all the other things it can do!

Thanks! Yeah it would but depending on exactly what you wanted there might be cheaper solution. Bear in mind that latency prevents you from jamming effectively at the same time. You might get away with using zoom and adjusting the sound pref to sound card and mic which would give you good quality and be free

Excellent overview here, Andy! We are thinking about using Audiomovers for remote live-streamed concerts. Any thoughts about syncing audio coming from a remote guests DAW to a video call via Skype? With the ability to adjust latency, you should be able to align them (somewhat) - even if it's not PERFECT, the audio quality would be far superior to simply taking the audio from Skype. Thanks again!
Rogue Amoeba do a couple softwares that would probably help - I use loop back and audio hijack. One of them ca direct audio directly to Skype. But you’d need it on the client end I guess which might not work. Still, might be worth looking at?
Some apps, like Zoom for example, allow you to see the latency stats during a session. Even though latency is a non-deterministic parameter, you can adjust AM latency settings matching the picture to get very close.
Hey Andy, nice video. Great review. I wanted to know, have you tried using loopback along with zoom or any other streaming/meeting software, to work in this way?.
Hey Francisco. We use loopback for various things but not collaborating w live audio. I imagine you could route something to play good quality audio to a client but it would prob be a faff. Might be worth a try though!
Hi!! Awesome video!! Can you help with an issue that I am having with the listento? It transmits pretty clearly at 0.5s, but at 0.1 it is very glitchy and drops out.
Sounds like you need to adjust your buffer in your DAW, and check your comp can take it. Other than that, I can recommend you contact audiomovers directly.
Your best bet is to demo the software. I would think Audiomovers would be the best because you can adjust the latency and bit rate. I would imagine it might be possible with solid stable internet both ends.
How do you hear the client when they are playing/recording live? If u want to hear the track and them at same time? Do u have to use two instances of listen to? One on input channel and one on master bus?
Nice video. Do you know is any of those apps can share 2 monitors? I:E if I want to share my session monitor and another monitor with the plug ins so the participants can watch my 2 monitors? Thanks!
That’s a great question that I don’t know the answer to. From memory I don’t think any of them could. Listento doesn’t have a video streaming capability so you could potentially use that and stream two monitors via a different software (zoom?)
That's a nicely put together video. I learned a lot from it. Doing a lot of travel myself, I've needed to do a lot more of this as well as live streaming in these times. I've just downloaded Ishowu last night and it seems to work for putting desktop sound into Streamlabs OBS(on Mac), which is great, but it doesn't pull up the sound from pro tools. Which of these 3 would do that? Especially, would the free version of soundwhale do that? what info are you planning for your next video?
Sound whale will do that. It’s free so you should demo it and see how it works for you. Next vid is how to prepare a space where you’re living to record remote vocals in a useable way for producers.
@@AndyDollerson Thanks for the quick response! And if you are in the UK., you about 1:30 am.... he he. Your next video sounds like a great topic as well, especially since I am a vocalist, violinist.
For your next video, it would be great to hear some suggestions for also recording something decent from a hotel room even when traveling light! Like maybe with something like a USB HypeMic which starts to get decent quality....or whatever. I talked to the sound whale guys last night, they said that I would need at least the level 2 version, but sounded that they would be easy to work with on this.
Great job! I found that the buffer size within your daw is the real issue that may disrupt the workflow speed on remote collabs. Also, one way to do this is to setup a shared dropbox folder and open it up on each participant’s file browser in a DAW of choice. Like that midi part, but want to tweak it a little? No need for trying to explain your suggestion with proper terminology, you can just ask the other person to drop the midi file into the shared folder -> make your adjustments -> put it back. Also works with audio. Much safer and just as fast.
Hello Andy, im from Mexico. Im part of a vocal music group and we are trying to figure out how to make a live recording session in which each of us could record their voices in a same software window. Kind of like google docs but for audio. I would like to play some vocals in a loop (mi computer audio will be shared live via Zoom), and then on top of that, I would like that the other group members could record their vocals. So each time the loop initiates, it would play the new version with each member entering at a time. Do you now if any of these software allow that? Edit: I do not care about latency because the audio people would get via zomm will come from just one computer (my computer) that's playing the master in a loop.
Wow that sounds really cool. Are you using a DAW? If so, you might want to try that with Audiomovers Listento - you would instantiate one listento plugin on your main out on your DAW, and then separate receive plugins for each member of the music group. I've never tried it, so it'll take some workaround to make it happen. I think it will work in terms of latency, although you WILL have some very slight latency, so depending on how tight your loop is, that will affect it. If this doesn't work, there is more and more software coming out, or already out that you might find useful! There is a free trial of LIstento if you want to try it out. And it's very reasonably priced after that. Hope that helps!
@@AndyDollerson Yes, we´re using Reaper for recording and Ableton for looping. I'll check that plugin, thanks. I really think latency is something we will have to work with and not against it. So my idea to achieve that is that each member has their own loop (4 bars long) playing independently from that one from the host. We will not be hearing each other, or hearing the main audio output, but we will be able to generate 4 bars of sounds/singing. So Im even thinking in a Git solution...
Hi - so I checked out all three of the programs and it seems that Soundwhale and Sessionwire are Mac only, and according to Listento they only support ProTools, Logic, Cubase and Ableton. I work with a variety of clients on different OS (Windows and Mac) and DAWs (Reaper, Studio One, etc.) . Is anyone aware of a software solution that will can accommodate those of us that are not locked into one system?
interesting! I know that it says on Audiomovers website that only a few DAWs are supported, but listento might still work on other DAWs? Have you tried the demo? I know that all the DAWs you mentioned are covered with the plugin formats Audiomovers provides..
Thanks for this comparison - very informative! I was looking for collaboration functionality in terms of recording and practicing - and finally came up with Reaper-based MusiCollaboration (www.MuCol.ch): A couple of scripts allow from a "main-project" to generate instrument specific projects which can be shared over any of the available cloud-services (such as google-drive, OneDrive, iCloud or Dropbox). The instrument projects can be used for recording or practicing independently from all other participants. The recordings made in all instrument projects and also the main-project can be synchronized using plugin-independent backtracks so that everyone involved has the latest work results available to them.
Help? Can 3 members of a band use this to write remotely.. Could I have this open, record a vocal and immediately have a bassist add a baseline to the same logic session as my vocal and then a third guitarist add another, all from different locations on different computers? Or Is this simply a broadcasting tool? cheers x
Hi Andy. I co-run a choir with another leader (who also has Logic) and I wondered whether Listento would be a way for me to play accompaniment and for her to sing. Is this possible do you know?
Yes definitely possible with good internet connection. Will need some tweakery and figuring out where to place the plugins but latency can be really low so you shouldn’t notice playing live.
How do I do this Ableton Live 10? I want to use Zoom for the client to just listen in realtime. When I play it I get a delay so how do I mute on my side in Ableton? T
I think you’re saying you’re routing the audio directly through Zoom? I would recommend checking these softwares out. They enable higher quality audio with NO delay! They also separate the main audio stream and talkback functions so you don’t get that annoying double sound. I would recommend checking listento - you can use it for £4 a week - pretty good deal!
Thank you for kindly responding! I have the audio movers listen to plug-in. I use Ableton live 10. Can I do a test session with you to check and troubleshoot to help get it working right?
They can use the listen to receive plugin or they can just listen on the browser. If you send them the link and they click on it, it will open a browser window and enable them to listen to what you’re playing.
@@AndyDollerson This works great Andy! I tested it with my friend in another city and all went well. Now can I keep the same link open when I open other music projects in Ablelton or the DAW or do I have to resend a new link for each song project?

You should try Cockos Ninjam!
Nice thanks! I’ll check it
Do the other person need listento receiver just to hear it or just the link? So far setup seems easy .
Great video sorry I hit thumbs down by mistake.. but thank you for making this
Haha no probs. I think you are able to reverse the thumbs down and hit a thumbs up maybe? Have a good one!!
