  • Yep, crankcase venting and crankcase pressure are still real issues to deal with on our Milwaukee Eight Harleys. Some think that the updated oil pump eliminates that issue, but that’s not the case. I’ll explain this plus the other top three questions I get about crankcase venting, crankcase pressure, and crankcase vacuum.

      @@mariolepore8909 thanks for the kind words! I did some digging and found out that the previous supplier I used no longer carries the check valves, but there is a new supplier. The drawback is they only seem to sell them in packs of 6. Here’s a link to what I found: bit.ly/3GxGyGQ
      And here's another one that I have not tried but could be promising: bit.ly/3MgLY9A
      Other check valves may work fine, but the lowest possible opening pressure is definitely beneficial (the one I have opens at just 0.1 PSI).
      Let me know what you end up with!

    I run the Trask and DK Customs ext breather... No snot into combustion and great venting. My bike runs great with these setups. M8s suffer from blowby and excessive oil consumption. Letting snot into the combustion chamber creates carbon deposits on piston, which over time will cause detonation. Trask highly recommends their vent setup and ALSO venting externally the head breathers. They have a wealth of information and know a lot more than I do. Great video :-)

    I’ve done the breather mod above the air intake underneath the tank. In addition i did your transmission venting mod WITH a check valve to keep vacuum. So best of all worlds, no oil in intake, therfore no carbon buildup on piston heads, underneath the tank so no lines in sight, transmission is breathing with vacuum. So that is what you should do if you listen good to all info, including Kevin Baxter. If you do these mods, do both, not one or the other. Keep the rubber down guys! Have a good one and great footage!! Greetz a fan from The Netherlands, yes land of wooden shoes, windmills and gouda cheese 🇳🇱🧀🤘

    Hey Ron. On my 2019 FLHX, I went with a 3/8” hose on the transmission top cover vent to atmosphere through the check valve to a small filter. Installed the vent with an S&S cam chest kit upgrade. Definitely had oil in the intake before the upgrades. I even saw burnt oil buildup on top of my pistons. After the upgrades I’ve seen absolutely NO oil in the intake. Great solution. Bike runs great and verified no sumping during a recent oil change. Great content. Appreciate you sharing your work.

    Thanks again for the first round of videos. I vented my trans cover last year and it works great. I upgraded my intake beginning of winter and vented the head breathers. On the shakedown ride, my breather assembly blew right off on the highway! (I didn’t have the tubing tight enough). That told me there was pressure on the tubing unless the vibration was enough to rattle it off, but there was oil dribble on the breather bolts after just 2 or three miles. Did a better job installing another one and not looking back…. I have an brand new A1 vented dipstick I didn’t use if anyone wants it cheap but I used the pod filter and hose to vent my trans.

    I have a HD SE heavy breather intake, very similar to the Arlen Ness. However, each breather bolt exits into a cavity, and the cavity is plugged with a double oring part. The plug is a separate HD part that comes with the heavy breather kit. , Each cavity has the same little hole that goes into the intake of the throttle body. Within each cavity, I have placed a piece of HD detailing cloth (the white ones you can buy at the dealer), cut to fit snugly within the cavity. This absorbs most of the oil mist and I replace each cloth piece every thousand miles or so. I plan on using the Fueling dipstick vent to improve on this, just bought it. You have some great videos on this topic!!!!

    Hi Ron, thanks for all the videos, I watched them all. I had a Sport Glide with a stage 2 and started by fitting a vented dipstick then did the top cover mod, it all worked great and I didn't get any oil in the filter on that bike ! But now I have traded it for a RKS, only stage 1 at present (that may change !) First thing I did was the transmission top cover mod, I just swapped out the Screaming Eagle Elite as it got in the way of my knee and I didn't want to have to carry a rain sock ( I live in the UK so get caught in the rain a fair bit ! ) I have fitted an S&S stelth now and found lots of gunk in the front breather bolt but not the back ! Anyhow I have used the original bolts that vent straight through and then run a piece of hose from each to a T piece and then a catch can just above the starter. I was wondering about just venting the front breather bolt as it had all the gunk in it and letting the rear one vent into the air intake just to give a little vacuum ! What do you think ? Is it always the front breather that get all the oily gunk and if so why ? Thanks again for sharing all your research.

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey David - Thank you for the kind words! I suspect it’s just chance that just the one breather bolt had the gunk. But it would be easy enough to run your experiment. Give it a shot and see what you get. Based on what I’ve seen, I don’t think you’ll get any vacuum but it won’t hurt anything. Let me know how it goes!

      Yeah I think that’s viable. Not sure how the existing holes would factor in, but that’s a nice creative approach. If the front edge was cut you could definitely get away with just sewing the raw edge with rust oleum or something compost to prevent rust. I’ll definitely explore that when I tackle the project. I'm using the Trask M8 Checkvent to ventilate the crankcase on my 2021 Road Glide Special. I like the appearance of the Trask piece, and it is working great on my bike. I've considered running External Breather System for the Top End but I'm not seeing any oil in the a/c, TB, etc. My combination runs excellent, torque comes on below 2,000 rpm and pulls nicely to around 5,000 rpm. Averaging 46.4 mpg at 75mph highway.
    Present mods: Stage-2 S&S 465 cam (full S&S cam chest kit); S&S 2-1 Sidewinder catalyst equipped Exhaust (w/Ghost Pipe for appearance, balance out the back end of the bike); Fuel Moto 3956 Air Cleaner (w/stock OE ventilator cover); HD oil cooler fan; and Dynojet PV3b Tuner w/map by Fuel Moto.
    Future mods: S&S 55mm intake manifold (ported by Ward); bore/hone spare set of low mileage 114 cylinders to 4.125" and fit my Carillo forged 10.75:1 pistons (makes a 120 cu. in. displacement with the stock 4.500" 114/117 crankshaft); Dynojet TT-8 Wideband O2 Sensors Kit. Reworked stock heads with upgrades to valvetrain; mild rework. S&S Top End Kit (Roller Rockers, etc.).

    • @tommiller8714
      @tommiller8714 Рік тому +2

      @@Andreas-yt9wv I'd suggest to just ventilate the crankcase first (w/Trask M8 Checkvent) and ride some, checking the air cleaner & throttle body for any trace amounts of oily residue (perhaps check every 250-300 miles initially). Hopefully it will be clean, but if not, then you could also go with a Air Cleaner type with Head Breather Bolts that utilize a Catch Can (will need to check catch can every 500 miles, plus or minus, for level in catch can. More than likely, it may also depend on how you're riding, that is if you're riding frequently at high rpm's, then possible you might see "some" oily residue in the air cleaner/TB. Another item, are the Breathers up inside the topside of the heads. Fueling and T-Man Performance offer superior versions versus the HD OE Breathers. I've not researched these yet. My understanding is that you really can't over-ventilate the engine...if both ventilating the crankcase and the Breather Bolts/Catch Can. Hope this is helpful.

    Hey Ron , I have done the vented top cover . I used a stainless bulkhead fitting and cut the inside barb down so not sticking down so far into the oil galley . Ran pipe up behind right hand side Cover installed a check valve under the seat and ran down under the left hand side cover to a small vented catchcan mounted via a stainless steel p clamp to the back of the primary cover . Seem to work fine untill I went for a "spirited " ride and filled the catch can with oil . Oil level was at the hot full mark before the ride and as the vented catch can is quite small didn't lose much oil but made a mess . I have since lowered my oil level slightly to see how that goes . I have a 2018 Fatbob and on the positive side at least my mk1 oil.pump seems to be working just fine 🙂

I haven't done the cam chest upgrades yet but am very close to making the switch to s&s or fueling unless the oil pump your describing is a better choice?
    Also relevant according to Baker, my 6 spd, N1 Baker grudgebox has some sumping solution intergrated as well. (Unverified personally) I was happy with my 3 hole fluid change today as all 3 holes had the correct amount of fluid come out as went in last time. (with no more than a 1/2 Oz error of margin)

    hey Ron, I installed the Trask tranny cover to vent the crankcase, I have 2021 Sportglide with 2600 miles on it, my issue is, I had my 1000 mile service done and I'm using Schaeffer Synthetic 20-50 racing oil, great stuff, I had an S+S camplate, oil pump and S+S lifters with adjustable pushrods and S+S tappet cuffs and a Star Racing 30 / 30 cam installed. I've put 1600 miles on it since the 100 mile service, my concern is, I'm burning ALOT of oil, there is no oil currently showing on th dip stick, when I checked it cold on the jiffy stand last week after 100 mile ride, it was 3-4 "dots" up from "add a quart", this past weekend, checked it cold after a 100 mile ride and not a drop on the dipstick, also, let it run 3 minutes per Harley, shut it down and checked, not a drop either on the dipstick, I have 1 month left on my warranty, I have no oil coming out of my A/C ( blow by)or the pod filter from the Trask. I've reached out to my local dealership and they did not seem to be too concerned about the modifications that I have made with regard to warranty work, however, I am extremely concerned, a quart every 1500 miles seems to be excessive, could it be my valve stems / seals, just wanted to get your thoughts, thank you for taking the time

And you’re right that if it’s not blowing out into the air cleaner or pod filter, it must be getting burned during combustion. Seems like you’d smell it in the exhaust? And if you’re still under warranty I’d press the dealer hard to address that. That’s a bit beyond what I can provide input on, but it does seem like there’s something going on internally. Sorry I don’t have more helpful input - please do let me know what you find out.

      You may be sumping... The oil is not being scavenged back to the tank. This will cause a low oil level on the dipstick. The OEM sump plug is too long and can block proper scavenging. Fueling and DK Customs sells the shorter plug. If your bike is sumping, and you add oil you will over fill your engine causing more problems. If your rings sealed properly during breakin, the external case and external head breathers should eliminate blowby. Best of luck :-)

    Ron, thanks for your channel!! I have an ‘84 FLHT Electra glide. The previous owner ran the crank case breather hose into a catch can, and that catch can is filling up with oil and spewing out the the vent… Here’s my question since this is my first Harley, can I run that crank case breather hose to the oil tank and let the oil that’s being blown out, just dump back into the oil tank and then I could also create a breather for the oil tank? I don’t see any questions about that, but it seems to make a lot of sense to me. Although I’m not the smartest bulb in the box. Thanks again for all your help and all your videos!

      Hey Randy - I’m a fan of the check valve. If you do both mods the check valve wouldn’t really be needed because the vacuum source would be eliminated. The original check valves I liked are a bit harder to get now.

Of course it’s easy to seal the vent off but you’d still have the crankcase pressure issue. Let me know how it goes.

    Ron, Great Videos! I have been looking into doing the trans cover venting solution that you've done in your videos. I don't want to spend the big money on the Trask, which I think is a quality solution, but pricey. just wanted to give you a heads up. I seen a video lately, where they have a M8 121 CVO motor apart, and he shows that they no longer have the breather(PVC) system in the heads, and are using a venting solution directly done by the moco, in the trans top cover, so there is no venting into the intake. so now that they have done this, I wonder if they plan on doing this to the 2024 model bikes. He does state that they are using a catch can and not just a filter. He doesn't go much further in the video as to say if they are running a vacuume back to the system. I plan on doing your mod here this winter.

    What do you think about putting two fittings in the transmission cover over the crankcase. Routing the head breathers to one of the fittings and putting vacuum to the other. Would that provide the vacuum needed for the rings to seal and all the other vacuum benefits while keeping the blowby oil mist out of the combustion chamber? This would also eliminate the catch can.

      Hey Ron I really appreciate all your videos. So far I've decided against draining beathers back into the crankcase. I rerouted the breathers to a catch can and ran the output from the can to the vacuum fitting on top of the throttle body. Do you think that this should relieve the pressure and create enough vacuum in the crankcase? Or should I still consider venting the transmission cover? If so, I was thinking of running the vent to a "T" in the hose going back to the throttle body. I'm thinking this would add vacuum to crankcase and make sure oil was caught in can not crankcase. I very much appreciate any thoughts you have. Thanks

    • @RonsWorkshop
      @RonsWorkshop  Рік тому

      Hey Pete & Donna - I appreciate the kind words! I think you’ve got a good solution, and determining whether or not to vent the transmission top cover is probably just personal preference. My initial thought is that it would likely be beneficial. But if you’re unsure, you could monitor things for a while and then make your final decision after some miles. Since you’ve added vacuum using the throttle body port I don’t believe there’s really a drawback to adding the transmission top cover vent (as in the head breather mod would eliminate the potential for vacuum but you’ve introduced another vacuum source). I’m not sure if that helps at all, but let me know what you decide and how it goes!

That also helps the oil pump more efficiently, helping keep sumping in check. In general, the engine will before better if the crankcase is under vacuum. I'm not familiar with the shovelehads, so I can't comment on those.

    When are dealership mechanics going to train for this crankcase pressure?
    They are aware of it you say……
    Not the mechanics where I bought my bike.
    They must of been sleeping that day in school.
    I have a brand new bike with an oil leak that happens after a good ride. They took the chain, and front sprocket off, started the bike and put it in first gear.
    Then said, see, it’s mint leaking.
    Either they’re stupid or they don’t give a flying fk.
    I say they don’t give a flying fk.

      That’s frustrating for sure. I hope they stand behind it and get your bike sorted out!
