Hi Carl, Nice teaching style -- and I agree that if the pin chuck were shorter, it would be more stable. There are a few different ways to throw a top like this, and I only know one of them. The way you started it off is backwards for a right-hander. Start it with the wrap reversed, then cross over and wind just as you did on the tip. When throwing, start with the top UPSIDE DOWN (pointed toward ceiling) -- it flips over as it lands. Adjust as needed. Practice & you'll have a lot of fun.
The first top Iearned to spin had a nail tip. Later on, the tops with ball bearings came out. I still have one ball bearing top and pulled it out to spin it for my grandchild.
Great beginners project!!!!! Useful for all those small oddments also. I really appreciate the comments about which tools youre using too. Extremely helpful. Thank you
I took a class at City College, and made about 30 tops. My biggest was six inch dia. I made my own steal tips, and some of the tops have bearings. They are on face book. It's not easy. Thanks for sharing Cecil Williams.
Ouch. Sorry to hear. Try to keep the tool rest as close to the work piece as possible. I explain this a bit in this weeks video. Hope you are healing well.
Great top As a kid I use to play a challenging game with tops, I have just made a few to see if I still knew how to spin it and after a few tries I got it back. the trick is to make the string just short of reaching the ground or pull it back on the throw as you do a yoyo with a slight twist. you actually hold it with the point up on your hand as you throw it. Good luck
it would help a bit if your string was thinner. and your tip was just a bit sharper.. but i do think the top look great. and i do love all your videos. keep up the great work
you are getting some nice looking shavings even though you are cutting up hill which i am given to believe leaves a poor finish.how is your finish tks for posting
Hi, did you make your pin chuck or is it a bought item? I am hearing a vibration as you turn this. a shorter chuck might stop that . thks for the vid, nice use of the pin chuck, I like that hole in the top look.
Carl, when I was a youngster here's how we threw them. Start winding the string at the point of the top with a small amount doubled back for the first couple of wraps to cover. Continue wrapping up the thicker portion of the top until all the string is wrapped. Hold the top pointed side up with your thumb on top of the tip. Give it a quick throw and snap your wrist. The top will automatically right itself on to the tip. Enjoy!
Hi Paula, that was a long time ago :) I can't find the bearing tips, but I did find this. shop.yoyoexpert.com/products/strummol8-replacement-spin-top-tips?variant=15387975188554
When I was a kid Grand dad brought me one back from Italy where they are a typical toy boys play with. You put a loop in a string and put that around your middle finger. You wrap the string around the top so the circles of string do not over r lap. On a smooth surface you throw it away from you and then you pull when the string is half way out. The part that hits the floor was metal and looked a bit like a nail. It disappeared, I think, because I was scratching up the floor.
Thank you Annika, I'm not sure where to get the bearing tips. Here is a place to get steel tips, they might know where to get the bearing tips. shop.yoyoexpert.com/product/259/YYF-Spin-Top-Replacement-Tips
Here is a kit with two plastic bearing tips and one fixed tip for $6: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042R2ZQO/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2W60G8IO33TA5 however you'll till need the actual bearings. Apparently the bearings are available from a variety of sources; if you can figure out the correct measurements and the size you need, they are quite inexpensive, but ordered from a top-related source they cost much more for the same thing.
Hey man. Great videos. Just started watching a few, and subscribed instantly! But what is the stuff you use when you sand the projects? Cause I see you do that all the time, but I have yet to find the video where you explain this.
+skatatataatje Thank you! In this video I used Paste wax, and mineral oil. I've switched to Howard beeswax, and Orange oil. Here's a link, www.amazon.com/Howard-FW0016-Feed-N-Wax-Conditioner-16-Ounce/dp/B001BKQYGW
HI Carl when you make a typical throw top what are the dimensions? I realize they vary with the size of the top but just for an average top I guess is what I am looking for, I have never seen anyone mention size. Thanks :)
I just made a 10 1/2 top out of pine. It came out 3 pounds. I made it segmented. Can you tell me how to burn a 1.0 surface on pine useing the lathe? PLEASE.
Are they hard to make? The price of wood tools would be priceless. For the memories of hour's we spent playing with spin top's. Any advice on kind of wood, nail, or how long string should be in your Topp's? Thank you and have a great day. God bless you and your family. Chris Duran Sr.
I used to play with these tops when I was a kid. But I don't remember that there was a hole in the upper part of it. I thought it was just a solid piece of wood. The weight of it being solid will help it spin better.
The groove you put in the top for the string is not needed and if you are winding it that way, you are doing it wrong. I could show you how to wind it but really can't describe it in the limited space on here. There are sites on the web that show how to do it. These things were old fashioned when I was a kid (I'm 50) but I have an uncle that thought me. He was also second place yo yo champ in his state. Just an old kid.
Show this toy to kids now and days, and they wouldn't know what to make of it. Awesome video by the way.

Thnaks for showing this. I bet the spin of this top is GREAT, nice and smooth, unlike some older Duncans.
The first top Iearned to spin had a nail tip. Later on, the tops with ball bearings came out. I still have one ball bearing top and pulled it out to spin it for my grandchild.
I use paste wax and mineral oil mixed together to cut down on the sanding dust and it also gives a nice satin finish.
Thank you,
Carl
Hi Mark,
Great job! Nice looking top to.
Thanks,
Carl
Nice looking top. Hope you had fun turning it. When you throw it you need to whip it out there. Thanks Carl
+Charles “Tim” Reicks Thank you Charles, ya it took me a little practices to get the hang of it.
Hi Marty, I made in pinchuck and I got the collet chuck at woodcraft.
Great beginners project!!!!!
Useful for all those small oddments also.
I really appreciate the comments about which tools youre using too. Extremely helpful. Thank you
Thank you Leigh! Glad you enjoyed it :)

Thank you Cecil,
I'll look you up on Facebook.
@jrhperu I use it to cut down on the sanding dust.
Yes I made my pin chuck. Yes, it probably would.
Thanks,
Carl
Thanks Jason, I'll give that a try
Ouch. Sorry to hear. Try to keep the tool rest as close to the work piece as possible. I explain this a bit in this weeks video. Hope you are healing well.
Thanks, I'll check out some sites I would love to learn how to throw it.
Carl
yes you can make one with out the pin chuck.
I think the piece of wood was about 3" x 3"
Carl
Thank you I'll give it a shot.
I found a chunk of Osage and am going to try it as you demonstrated.
Thanks
Frank
I just wanted to say thank you!
You inspired me to start turning, so i thought it would be nice to show you one of my spinning top projects :-)
I get a little ahead of myself sometimes. You should cut downhill, it makes a much cleaner cut.
Thanks for watching.
Carl
Very cool how did it turn out?
Most woodworking store have lathes they range from about 200 to 600 hundred for a small one.
Great top

Thank you Albert, It took me awhile but I finally got it to spin :)
Hi,
The slower the better for sanding if you have a lathe that you can reveres it's even
better. I'll do a video to better explain it.
Thanks,
Carl
as always another informative an outstanding video. thanks.
Yes you generally get a better cut down hill I just get ahead of my self some times.
@jrhperu It's Paste wax and Mineral oil. I just mix it together.
it would help a bit if your string was thinner. and your tip was just a bit sharper.. but i do think the top look great. and i do love all your videos. keep up the great work
@cheaben3 It's a pin chuck I made it.
tks for posting you seem to do a lot of different cuts to the way i was taught.no working up hill on spindle turning
Hi Kevin, It's KLINGSPOR you can find them online.
@oxide011 Cool did you upload some pictures?
you are getting some nice looking shavings even though you are cutting up hill which i am given to believe leaves a poor finish.how is your finish tks for posting
A good hard wood like Maple.
@haydenHD Good, to cut down on the sanding dust, but what is it? Grease or what?
a few questions, can you make one of these without the pinchuck and what size peice of wood should i use for one that size
@captdestiny No I haven't turned any Russian Olive just good sharp tools.
@haydenHD great! thx for asking i just think pine wood may be a bit to fragil to be trowing it around, what wood so you sugest is good for these?
what do you put in your sanding paper and for what purpose?
Hi, did you make your pin chuck or is it a bought item? I am hearing a vibration as you turn this. a shorter chuck might stop that .
thks for the vid, nice use of the pin chuck, I like that hole in the top look.
Where do you get the pinchuck from and the jacobs type chuck that holds it?
Thanks

do you mind telling me about the tools you use to make tops
Can you post a link to the ball bearing inserts? Thanks!!
Hi Paula, that was a long time ago :) I can't find the bearing tips, but I did find this. shop.yoyoexpert.com/products/strummol8-replacement-spin-top-tips?variant=15387975188554
très belle démonstration de votre savoir faire mais une question quel produit utiliser vous pour la finition merci
Thank you Alain, I use a paste wax, or bees wax to finish.
merci beaucoup
Think I could pull this off with a 3/8 and a 1 inch spindle gouges and one of those Robert Sorby Turnmaster scrapers sets?
+Jonathan Hoffman Absolutely Jonathan, I'd love to see it when you get it done. Here's my email, jacobson68@yahoo.com
+Jonathan Hoffman you can do it with just a single tool -- the 3/8" spindle gouge. Hope you already did, and had fun while at it, too!

Great video. You can tell it’s an oldie because of how much you say I’m. How does a pin chuck work? I’ve never heard of those before
Thank you! here's a video explaining it ua-cam.com/video/Odu1cT3AwUE/v-deo.html
@KO9958 Thank you,
Where can i get the ball bearing tips?
were can i buy one of those wood turning things an how much are they :)
It's about 1 1/2"
Wait?
Does it spin?
I never did figure out how to throw it :(
Oh, that's too bad. It's beautiful though!
@spintopmaster I bought one from Carls site and have been happy with it. I think it was $250.
Hi Carl, how far in do you drill the hole?
Hi Carl you have probably been ask this a thousand times, what is the brand of sandpaper you use.
Thanks Kevin
what type of mandrel is that?
Beautiful work! Working on a spinning top of my own, do you know where I could purchase or how I could make my own bearing tip?
Thanks!!
Thank you Annika, I'm not sure where to get the bearing tips. Here is a place to get steel tips, they might know where to get the bearing tips.

Charles Nicholls I believe this one was 2 1/2" by 3" but I'm not sure what standard size is for these.
Thanks Carl, pretty much what i am seeing is about an inch taller than they are wide. Thanks for the help.
Can you not use a nail for it to spin on as a bearing
I just made a 10 1/2 top out of pine. It came out 3 pounds. I made it segmented. Can you tell me how to burn a 1.0 surface on pine useing the lathe? PLEASE.
When we were kids we would drill a finish nail in the tip and sharpen it. If you were good enough you would stick your top on top of the other guys.
you can find them at woodturning supply stores.I have a video on all the basic tools you need. did you want to know specific names?
Dalle mie parti si chiama "Strumbl" e noi giocavamo a "spacca strumbl"
you should have made the top smaller in height.
it'll keep it balance much easier.
How much for 1 or 5?
Sorry I don't sell them.
Are they hard to make? The price of wood tools would be priceless. For the memories of hour's we spent playing with spin top's. Any advice on kind of wood, nail, or how long string should be in your Topp's? Thank you and have a great day. God
bless you and your family.

Hey Carl, Is there any way i can get one of those tops?
but like made by you?
Thanks
Jamal
Чем вы шлифуете ?
Yes. but thanks for the info.
I used to play with these tops when I was a kid. But I don't remember that there was a hole in the upper part of it.
I thought it was just a solid piece of wood. The weight of it being solid will help it spin better.
MUY LERDO, LENTO
i would put nail in the tip before hand and grind off the head for the tip
If you make the tip out of a nail it will last for ever!
The wood tip will not last long. Needs to be steel.
the heavier the head the better it spines
or.....you can buy one on ebay or amazon.
The groove you put in the top for the string is not needed and if you are winding it that way, you are doing it wrong. Haha crap you don’t not spin it.
