Triumph did it. They made the Best 400 cc bike on the market. There sales are going to sky rocket like no one’s business. I must have one.
Dominar 400 and duke 390 will eat it, though they are not retro style.
@@randombully3798 I bought a Speed 400. I'd say it's more "classic" than "retro". Wouldn't be caught dead on a Duke, and a Dominar is not available in the US. Not into riding around on a bike that looks like a "Transformer".
I’m 76 years young and have had 9 Motorcycles in my life, this is going to be mine next Bike, looks so cool l
It's too powerful for you.
My last bike was a GSXR 600CC tricked out, it did 175 mph and I put 48,000 miles on it, so this little 400cc will be a piece of cake. The Fiesta Flash
@@Chewygsxr triumph nailed it when a 75y old like yourself like the look of the bike aswell as myself at 39y old. This bike definitely appeals to a wide audience
It reminds me of my first bike when I was 17 teen, it was a Honda CL 72 250cc Scrambler, I put 10,000 miles on it in the Summer of 1965.
Buy one. I am 72 and realise after all the heavy bikes I’ve got this is way easier and lots more fun to ride. Love it!
Great review, camera facing forward wih a rider's view of the road and instruments. No music so I can here the exhaust. Brilliant stuff. Also I like the look and feel of this bike even when I have a T100!
Excellent review Dan. No daft music, 360 degree distorted camera footage. Spot on. I’ve a few much bigger bikes but I think I will get one of these. 72 years old so easier to lug around at my age. Thanks for a great video review.

Hiya Dan, a really good review, thanks for taking time to post it.
I have already placed an order for a Speed 400 in blue, but tested the Scrambler 400X on Friday, the Speed 400 was booked out for 2 test rides already, yet when i returned the Scrambler, the Speed was still there. I totally agree with your comments on the vibrations, not uncomfortable, but still noticeable, and the front brake seemed to have good instant bight, but faded under harder pressure, maybe the pads need to bed in more, but it was a concern. Also, the bike i rode had a sticky gearbox, and was reluctant sometimes to change up from 3rd to 4th. Apart from that, the bike was very nimble and nippy, especially doing roll on`s in 5th and 6th, a very torquey little bike.
Once again, a great review, and yes, i did watch your review of the Scrambler 400, and yes, i have just subscribed.
One last thing, I think you`ll find the UK bikes are built in Thailand, whereas the bikes built in India are for the Indian sub continental countries, as they have to be built to a different spec.
That is what I have always wanted. A classic bike with modern features. It’s a beautiful bike. Triumph makes excellent quality bikes. It’s a very premium looking bike. Excellent video. Keep up the good work. From a Yankee on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean NYC to be specific. Again excellent review. I enjoyed every minute of it. 🎉
Thanks Fred! Appreciate the comment and views!
Nice little back to back there Dan, just what we needed. 👍
Great review Dan as always 👏 I got to test ride the scrambler 400x over the weekend. I agree with everything you said. So much bike for the money and incredible value considering the quality of finish. When I tried finding negatives I came up with "maybe a little vibey" and "the mirror wobble at speed isn't great, but not bad at all". I really struggled to find any negatives. Such a cracking bike, think Triumph nailed it with these 400s.
Been waiting for this!! Nice review Dan!
And yet! Another great review by Dan. Lovely bike.
here's a little tidbit you probably didn't know, I test rode one two days ago, the ergos are exactly the same as the speed twin 900 !, that is, the seating position, bar reach foot peg position. I went and sat on a new 900 at the dealer to confirm this, even though it's a smaller bike , Triumph is very smart. , folks can transition right to a speed twin 900. I found the torque to be right there at low rpms, and it's less Viby than I expected.
Nice review Dan 👍 nice cockpit view, no clutch in that’s an improvement. The engine seams very refined for a single. I’m glad the price point is spot on and given the competition I think this would be my choice or the scrambler. Coolest bike for a2 licence out there today imo. Perfect bike for my daughter in a years time
Thanks mate!
Finally, someone talking the speed up against the Scrambler. However, you forgot to say which one you would buy at the end 🙂5:48
Yes please say which one you'd buy!
Just listen to the two videos, it's the Speed 400.
Nice, real world review!
Seems like a high quality, very decent, fun and affordable ride...bravo Triumph.
Great video once again. I just booked a test ride for the speed 400 and it might be my first bike, depending on how it feels 👍
A great video thanks and thank you for not saying 'it would make a great first bike or a bike for the less experienced motorcyclist' I hear that far too much. Right off to find your Hunter 350 content ! Ride safe
Thanks mate!
Great looking bike, nice and simple, and, as you say, amazing value.
Good review likeing this bike alot great mid range bike looking forward to purchasing one. always have been a triumph man
Good review bud, looks a cracking little bike for the money 👍
Thanks Mark!
I like everything about this bike….. apart from the massive cartoon T logo on the side of the tank. If one of these is in my future, so is a respray..
Great review of a great bike 👍🏻
I'm planning on buying this one, I think this video confirms it. 👍
Great review. Thank you 👍🏻
Glad you liked it!
Nifty little bikes Dan, I agree that the Speed is probably the better bike and cheaper too! It would be fun for experienced riders too.
Just took delivery of mine after ordering one after your great review. I’m blown away how good this bike is for the money. And I’ve other heavy, larger engined bikes and after an hour around the country lanes in Northumberland on this bike I realise you din’t need power… the torque is easily enough and it handles like you said like a little flea. I simply love it! Well done Triumph. 👍🏻😀
Excellent, hope you enjoy!
Awesome little bike...FYI £3,600 here in Thailand. The 400cc bike segment in the Asian market is huge, this beauty should sell well.
Great review as ever Dan. Rubber side down.
I live in Thailand to and I will get this one as my first bike. Just tried it at the Burapa festival last Thursday ! Perfect fit for my small size lol .
@@fredericvonkeller664 Fantastic, good one
Hi Dan, from a fellow vlogger and Royal Enfield Classic 350 owner's perspective, the RE brand does talk to a different customer, and have a firm and loyal fan base. That said, I really look forward to throwing my leg over the Speed 400, and I although I know the two bikes can't really be compared, there is talk of RE bringing out a 450 Hunter using the liquid cooled lump, found in the new Himi. Now that would/could be a true battle, which I would dearly love to be involved in. Great review's of both the Speed and X. All the best.
Reckon I will swap my RE Meteor for one of these, largely because RE chose to strangle the top end performance out of their 350 engine, whereas this bike has almost twice the power from a pretty similar sized engine.
Nice review 👍
Big fan of this bike. Been thinking of ending the train commute, and the price and quality of these makes it a no-brainer.
Great review. I think I'm going to test ride one when the weathers a bit warmer. 😁
A side question, what gloves are you using there?
Thanks a mil for great review, i finally made jy mind im gonna for this speed 400
Thanks for watching! I've got one coming next week for a bit of a longer term review. 👍
Wife ordered hers back in October and is due for delivery in March. Managed to get a black one, as if I'm honest it was the lesser of the 3 evils that are the tank design ! We'll probably end up spraying it anyway. Test rode both bikes back to back last week and although the scrambler was good the speed was great - Almost as much fun as my Supermoto! Seat height/weight was perfect for my wife - scrambler was a bit too tall. Triumph are gonna sell a load of these. We've ordered a fair few extras such as a comfort seat, lower crash bars, fly screen etc. Heated grips/handguards are in the pipeline as well. Can't wait for hers to arrive 😊
Lol you gonna let her ride her bike 😂? Sounds like it will be loads of fun
Agree. Rode one last week. Brilliant bike. No doubt there will be a RE Hunter out soon to compete......and I managed 87 mpg on my ride ( age !).
On a normal ride, my mpg is about 70ish mpg.
Yep, a Hunter with the 450 engine from the new Himalayan was already spotted testing. Would be the main rival against the Speed 400.
Ordered mine. But I took a demo bike out in York. Did not find any snatching at all, at any speed. Really looking forward to March for delivery. Fuel economy is supposed to be high. The demo bike was displaying 64mpg. Finish is superb. Note that UK models are being built in Thailand, not India. But guess parts are made all over the place. Heated grips not yet listed, think Triumph are still sorting out the software.
So been riding the Speed 400 since mid of October. Feels like just the kind of motorcycle I have been wanting. No real negatives to speak of.
There was a random stalling issue in 2nd or 3rd gear, which is already resolved with an ECU update. The headlight throw could be much better.
Apart from that, I can only nit-pick. Would have preferred black forks over the golden ones. Had to change my booking to the Black from the Red just because of how the Red clashes with the golden forks. Wish the Triumph logo was more discrete like on the Scrambler 400x. And the rear looks a bit more modern than neo-retro, does not gel with the rest of the design.
I love riding it. Been daily-ing it for my office commute. Did one 300 km + trip during the Christmas holidays (with a tail bag). Absolutely having a blast.
Regarding further models on this platform, a Speed 400 RR prototype with a quarter fairing and lower handlebars was already seen testing. A Bobber 400 is expected, follower by the most anticipated Tiger 400.
How on Earth did you get one 3.5 months before it was launched?!
@@Englishbikerdan I'm from India, mate! 😅.
Apologies for the confusion. They started deliveries from September here.
How did the 300 km trip go? Is it comfortable for long trips?
@@nobodynobody3903 Yep, no issues with comfort. Although your hands might start to go numb if you're going above 100 - 110 kmph for long, because of the vibes past 5.5k rpm. And no wind protection means the wind blast would tire you out at the end of a long ride.
The Triumph 400s are more of city slickers that can happily pull off the duty of occasional long rides on the highway. If you want these and intend on going on long rides often, then I would suggest to go for the Scrambler 400x for a more upright ergonomic that would offer a more comfortable ride (albeit, slightly less engaging compared to the Speed 400's ergonomic). And you might consider installing a big windscreen that would offer decent wind protection, but compromise on the looks.
I ride mostly in the city with occasional sunday breakfast rides and rare lomg intercity rides. The Speed 400 absolutely fits right for me.
@@the_winged_helm thanks a lot👍😄
Great bike - great review
Thanks! 👍
A lovely
looking bike with enough power for everyday
Thank you. Was considering the RE 450..This bike looks really nice. Two...to decide on.
I'm riding the new 450 in early April. 👍
Does it have a centre stand or is one available as an accessory? Pre drilled swing arm for bobbins?
I test rode the scrambler 400 x (the speed was to small for me at 6ft 2) really nice bike for the money! I liked it! I was expecting it to be cheaply made and gutless and it was the opposite, well made for the price and better than expected poke for 400cc
Went to the dealership this morning to check out the speed.. the scrambler is so much better looking in the flesh than the speed…looks much bigger than a 400
Thanks Dan. I recently started working at a triumph dealership and these things are gonna sell like hot cakes. Deposits are stacking up for them. I am curious how they will stack up against RE like you said.
Point to note is that the engine is from an Indian company Bajaj. Originally is being used in the the dominar series wich is basically a high spedd tourer. The engine is slightly changed but wouldn't make a big of a difference. And ya apart from comfort engine should be comfortable for long rides
Initially I thought I preferred the Scrambler but having seen your quick review I think the Street will be very popular, and probably the one you'd buy.
Speed 400 would be my pick.
On the dash might have been better if they swapped the rev counter and the speedo, as in digital speed and analogue rev
Great review Dan, but you forgot to share which bike would you pick between the Scrambler and Speed, if you are buying one for your garage!
I guess my editor removed that bit. But Speed 400 would be my pick!
Got mine on order.
Enjoy and ride safe!
How does the performance compare to the Honda cl500?
Nice review thanks, are you able to tell me if there is any difference in the gearing between the Speed and Scrambler?
Not that I could tell.
Read there was/is 🤷♂️
Perhaps I've missed. What would you say about the suspensions of both (Scrambler and Speed)? It is the same calibration or you really felt a significant difference?
Felt different enough to me.
Guide review, I looked at the Hunter and this bike fir my daughter. Put a deposit on an inbound Triumph. Figured that they would outgrow the Triumph where the 20 hp hunter they would. I think the extra features are worth the extra money as well. Like both bikes though
Would love this as a second bike but hate the tank design, the ‘Jack’ is a bit over the top and tacky looking, to my mind. Having said that great review Dan and as others have said forward facing camera is much better than these distorted ones which are the current trend. Got a great feel for the bike in this review.
Hello Mr. Dan I am a 23 year old who lives in india. I love to watch ur videos and i love the way u explain each detail about a motorcycle. I have been riding a 150 cc motorcycle for past 6 months and i still don't properly understand riding a motorcycle. Here in india we don't have any good motorcycle Training courses. The driving school instructors doesn't explain things well enough. example for shifting he said we should shift to the highest gear as soon as possible he didn't explain much about the correct timing for upshift and downshift. So Mr. Dan if possible can u please consider making a video using ur riding experience explaining the topic related to shifting gears like when to shift, what gear should i be using on specific situations like overtaking and in other scenarios ?
Is the radiator fan loud like in a Duke 390? Are there any false neutrals?
No to either of those.
Superb review Dan!
What is very strange to me is that it ha a Six speed gearbox just as my 1200… but the 900 only have a five speed. Wonder why that is
Yeah not sure, probably the torque figures of the Bonnie 900 engine mean they can get away with 5 gears.
Dan, could a test a Speed Twin 900? Would be very interested to her your views on how it compares to the 400 series. Thanks, Gav
Sadly Triumph have none of these on their press fleet. I might be able to get one from a dealer though. Keep 'em peeled!
@@Englishbikerdan I believe in you Dan!
@@Englishbikerdan Actually Triumph delivered one to Darcy (of Darcy & The old man), unless he got it from somewhere else 🤔
What are your thoughts on how this bike compares to the Hunter 350 you reviewed?
It's faster, feels lighter and a bit more agile. The Hunter is still very enjoyable though.
At least it’s sunny out!
What are the green and orange lights showing lit on the panel during the ride?
One was the low fuel warning.
The Orange one means Dan loves communists.
What is the Yellow warning light below the gear indicator for?
Went out when he filled up so I guess low fuel light.
Fuel warning.
If I wasn't tall and looking for a taller bike as my next bike, I'd seriously consider one of these. What's your thoughts on how this compares with the Honda CB300R?
Thanks for this. Always useful to know the height of the rider for comparison. What does, "more dynamic in terms of handling" actually mean?
Cornering braking..flickability..
That sorta stuff
For me it means it turns in quicker, changes direction quicker.
Although the MCN's review says exactly the opposite of the two machines:-
"However, where the Scrambler 400 X outperforms the Speed 400 in terms of its appearance and stature, it does lose out dynamically - but this will only truly be noticeable back-to-back as it still handles to a reasonable level, especially in terms of mechanical feedback and grip."@@Englishbikerdan
Did i miss the part where you made a choice betwixt the two 400's?
I miss the part where it's my problem 🕷️
On the price front, and like the 350 enfield's with a £5000 new price it stands to reason that the 2nd hand price will be low, 12 months later you should be able to get it for around £4000 so there should be a few bargains to be had 😊
Would I assume correctly that for a 6'4 rider, the x scrambler is the one to go for?
As I'm short, I'll also have to assume that is the way to go.
This looks sexy. Loving the look. Back in the day I had the 310r.. I would have had this over the BMW 310r for sure…
Nice review👍👍
On the verge of getting my first bike and really torn between this and a Honda CB500F (a second hand Honda is the same price as this new). Really tricky!
A couple of negatives, the front mudguard is too short, and for an Enfield rider, there is no centre stand. Having said that I have ordered a red one, giving up my Classic 500 after 6 years.
Interesting also to note that the Speed 400 has Aluminium FatBars and the Scrambler 400 has normal Dia handlebars, if they are aluminium or not I don't know.
I have a friend who's owned a vintage Bonneville for decades. It's been a few years since he's ridden it because vintage bikes take some work to keep running and he's a busy guy. I'm working on convincing him that a 400 doesn't cost a lot and he should buy one so he can get out riding again. He and his misses aren't big people so I'm guessing that the 400 would be good enough for two up riding on our Canadian prairie city roads where strictly enforced 50 and 60 kph speed limits are the norm.
Will I be able to flat foot on it. I am 5'7''?
I find it odd the Speed 400 is a higher seat height than a Speed Twin 900.
Nice review--i belive the Speed has sintered front pads while the 400X does not to accommodate off road braking.
Would be nice swapping those on the Scrambler...I'm getting mine Tuesday and will put in the sintered only at first change
probably 2024s best bike per buck
When these 2 bikes were first announced, if I had to choose one , I would have leant towards the scrambler, the seat height would definitely suit my frame better. That said the more I see the street version, the more I think i prefer it. I know they have the same engine, but to my ears anyway, it sounds better in the speed 400
Scrambler looks way better in the flesh than the speed
Hi Dan. According to the specs on the Triumph website both bikes have a 4 piston front caliper.
You're right! Not quite sure why my notes say twin piston. Brakes on the Speed were tangibly better though.
Does it have more get up and go than say a DRZ400? How is the fueling and vibes?
I've not ridden a DRZ400 so can't comment unfortunately.
Nice video. One question: What is the difference between "price" and "price point"?
I can't even ride a bike, and I want one so badly !
Smart looking bike that seems to tick all the boxes. My brother is looking to get his license. It's been decades since he riden though. Might be the ideal starter bike for him. Ps. Got my SV from Suzuki Bulldog next door :-)
Would be interested to see how this compares to the KTM 390 duke as i owned one of those for 6 years and it was a brilliant second bike. This seems a bit slower to me but probably not much in it?
It is quite slower than Duke 390...its top speed is around 150 whereas Duke 390 goes past 170
Not quite as dymanic as the 390. That's a very aggressive bike in that category and there's not much that matches it. Maybe the Svart 401.
The Speed400 has matching performance to your Duke390 (2017) model for sure..
I bought the black 🎉
Lovely, enjoy!
It's a great looking little budget bike. And I think this bike actually competes with the Ducati scrambler Icon, esp. at the eye watering prices Ducati is asking for them, a £5k difference. There'll be alot of people that will keep £5k (plus servicing costs) in their pockets and buy this over the Ducati as the Triumph is styled for the same sector. For the green lane'ing there wouldn't be much in it if the tyres were changed to those found on the scrambler, which they make for the Triumph too.
Did you ever review the Speed Twin 900?
Not yet.
Would this bike be okay for the highway? Out my way, the highway speeds are typically 60-65mph. My Honda Navi doesn't stand a chance on a highway....
Yes absolutely, no issues doing 70-80mph.
17:16 it was a lexus rcf. 5.0 v8 na. One of the last na hurahh imo
Nice, quite a rare car to see out here!
Bought the scrambler cause of price and already have an 2023 xsr 900 2023 for this price a no brainer
Havent heard before that the Scrambler has a two piston front brake caliper and the Speed a four piston caliper.
I think the Scrambler will be better for a taller person and for someone shorter the Speed.
It doesn't, same 4-piston as the Speed. I was sure I read the spec sheet right but perhaps it changed. It's happened before.
Bosch ABS is cornering ABS ?
No it's not their IMU-based ABS.
great review! I thought it was funny when you were saying "it's less than forty horsepower" but you kept letting OFF the throttle - Ha!
Ha!
You have to eventually let off the throttle! 😬
A short question for you Dan.
This isn’t on my list of bikes, but a new tourer is.
What would you go for having a pillion rider?
*The new Tiger 900 GT Pro
*The Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello or…
*The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 GT?
Three very different beasts at approximately the same price.
No of course I haven’t test driven the new Tiger yet, living in snowy Sweden n all, but seeing I really love the 1200 and test drove that monster last year I get how it might be.
The Suzuki is so powerful but the Guzzi has soul…
So. Given you would have a pillion rider fifty percent of the time.. which one would you choose?
Forgot one thing… I’m 6.06 ft with a 34 inseam.
Harley..
Seen the Nightster?
I've not ridden the V100 so would have to say Tiger 900 GT Pro would be my pick.
@@sanjaysharma-jf8fv Not my cup of tea. Will test it though 🙂
@@tomryner5830 Quite..
Being an Enfield/Triumph/BSA user I thought so too..that Harley isn't mine either. That was until I got to take a friends Harley 300km to its 1st service. Willing, robust, durable, involved..these are things that strike you about one. It kind of grows on you, and the engine note is always communicating feedback...by the time I rode it back am seriously considering buying the 440x once my new Triumph Scrambler is broken in and settled. The 440x's trellis chassis give one a lot of confidence cornering too...
Love the Speed 400 video! Do you have any plans to take the Kawasaki Z500 out for a run?
Thanks. Are the moment Kawasaki don't want you work with me. I've asked a few times and it's been a firm 'no thanks' from them. Bit of a shame.
Too buzzy for extended stints at 70 like the scrambler? Apart from that seems an excellent bike
You seemed quite enamoured with the bike, I have a deposit on one but for my use case of occasional commute am not entirely convinced it would be more economical than my 60mpg car which for a machine with so little weight to move would be a disappointment, what are your thoughts on the running costs Dan? Cheers
Take a look at the 390 Duke, so lightweight in town and does 70mpg, on my second since 2020 and never had an issue with either in 34,000 commuting miles....
My speed 400 is getting 80mpg
@@MRo55i74wow..u must be treating it fair n square
@user-sj6cn6lt3j That's OK given it has a bit of performance and will be still tight.
My CB300R reports 90mpg on the dash.
I was about to order one, but suddenly LOTS of bad issues reported coming out of India.
Now considering ordering the CB500F instead.
I think the decals on the bike are awful. Such a shame for an otherwise decent package (quality aside)
For an extra £700 you can get the Kawasaki z500
i've never seen more stickers on top of a tank.
Right?!
That car was lexus rcf 17:15
Is this bike more vibey than cb300r?
I can't quite remember tbh.
You should buy a speed 400 and doing a long term review 💯
Unfortunately I can't purchase bikes just to make content, it doesn't make financial sense for me at the moment.
Clutch lever always wiggley wobbly on Triumphs. My 1200RR, Daytona Moto2, and I believe my Street Moto2. The Thruxton I'm not sure. My Tiger Explorer, I don't think so.
My Tiger 850 clutch was solid, as have many other bikes I've had from them. Seems to be hit and miss.
Looks fantastic for the money. I couldn't help thinking the same as one comment you made: a Tiger 400 would be amazing.
Controversial, but if the Daytona 660 sells well then a Daytona 400 would be very interesting to see too.
In the meantime, this looks like a lot of bike for not that much money.
