If they’ve gone bad, you can still have some fun with them! They’re a PUFF ball because, as shown, they puff out their spores everywhere when agitated! Once a puffball has begun to go brown and look deflated, you can help it out and spread its spores by kicking it around for a little bit like a soccer ball! It’s only of the only things that makes finding a puffball too late worth it.
@@sanrisa3370 Yeah, but be _exceedingly_ careful to avoid igniting a cloud of powder (whether spores or flour or some other flammable powder) in an uncontrolled way and without some physical distance. Fungi are their own evolutionary branch alongside flora (plants) and fauna (animals) making them distinct from either side This makes for some weird behaviours like their main body that's under the floor being made of the same cells as the fruiting body that we see, along side other oddities like the fact that even once harvested they can absorb vitamin d for dietary consumption

One of the richest and most flavoursome meals I ever had was this mushroom prepared by a local elderly couple up on a hill less then fifty miles from where I live. Great memory and greater feast.
It's important to note that a lot of poisonous mushrooms (the destroying angel for example) look like smaller versions of the puffball when they've just started growing. Check by cutting it open before cooking. If you can see evidence of a stem or any yellowing/bug damage, it may not be safe.

My brother and I found one of these hiking and we're both like "IT'S A WILD JIGGLYPUFF!" they are so cool!! We researched puffball mushrooms when we got home😊
It astounds me that there are mushrooms out there that are actually not a bad flavor... When i was younger i just absolutely used to hate the taste of mushrooms... But ive recently started being a bit experimental with food and have found myself more at ease trying them than i used to be.
ah, the key my friend, is proper preparation! cooking mushrooms wrong can really affect their texture, and you want to season them properly too! If you plan to use mushrooms in a dish, cook them first and without any other vegetables in the pan. This will allow the moisture to evaporate out of them and theyll be drier for further cooking later when you add the rest of the ingredients. There's so many different kinds of mushrooms with vastly different flavors. If you enjoy a more chewy mushroom, shiitake mushrooms are very savory and work well when sliced and stir fried with noodles and have an umami taste. Oyster mushrooms are "meaty" in texture and work well when pan fried with simple ingredients like garlic and butter. Don't be afraid to poke around, you'll almost certainly find one you'll enjoy!
@@everythingsalright1121 yeah, my problem was always the ones that got put on pizza. They would be super chewy, bland and just overall not that pleasant to eat so it colored my preferences early on. I do appreciate the advice though, my fiance and I have been doing a lot inspired by asian cooking recently since we have been looking to eat more at home instead of going out.
@everythingsalright1121 Really doesn't matter if you just don't like mushrooms. The texture is what gets me most. I can eat them, though. It's cauliflower I absolutely can't have. Taste, texture, smell. Doesn't matter how it's prepared. I have over a decade culinary experience and came from a family that cooked from scratch, so cooking skills are not the issue, personal preferences are.
I found a couple of these up in the mountains with my dad a couple of years ago. One of my favorite memories. I've had these before, they are such a delicacy. Make sure to peel the skin on the outside though when you're processing them, as you dont know if anything's made the outside inedible. My favorite way to fix these is like toasted raviolis, the way to do that is to do a light batter on them with a flacky outside and then fry them. The inside tastes like ricotta cheese and is best served with marinara sauce.
Would these particular giant puffball mushrooms make some good gravy
Do these have the same taste/texture as those disgusting white gummy mushrooms sold in the produce aisle?
They have about the same texture as a mozzarella ball of cheese. @@jordanfehr7749
Wdym toasted raviolis, you dont boil them?
If they’ve gone bad, you can still have some fun with them! They’re a PUFF ball because, as shown, they puff out their spores everywhere when agitated! Once a puffball has begun to go brown and look deflated, you can help it out and spread its spores by kicking it around for a little bit like a soccer ball! It’s only of the only things that makes finding a puffball too late worth it.
Also looks like its useful to make campfires
Can i kick it around my backyard, so next year i get ton of shroom?

The fact that mushrooms are technically alive, breathing and even thinking creatures makes this even better
Sometimes, I accidentally interpret "mushroom" as "marshmallow" and hopelessly and falsely fall deeper in love with nature.
no marshmallow is a plant to make marshmallows
Weirdo
this mushroom is a marshmallow lol
Thats silly. Everyone knows Marshmallows grow on bushes! Magical Eskimos plant Jet Puffs up on Alaska's North Slope. Remember to wait till after the first frost to harvest them or they'll be green and hard.

This makes for some weird behaviours like their main body that's under the floor being made of the same cells as the fruiting body that we see, along side other oddities like the fact that even once harvested they can absorb vitamin d for dietary consumption

yeah we were always told they were poisonous either color
It's important to note that a lot of poisonous mushrooms (the destroying angel for example) look like smaller versions of the puffball when they've just started growing. Check by cutting it open before cooking. If you can see evidence of a stem or any yellowing/bug damage, it may not be safe.
