      Can easily turn into just a baritone by swapping to fishman pickups and a volume pot. Remove all the rest of the pots and wiring 😂
      Best is to just get a 30” baritone guitar instead of doing all of that like i have in drop E right now.

    In my experience, it's a bit of a lottery whether bass pickups sound good for a guitar sound or not, but I personally do this all the time, I even route my neck pickup to a bass amp and bridge to a guitar one so I can get both sounds at the same time, it's about the hugest sound I've ever heard come out of a single instrument ever.

    I really like how Meshuggah’s mixes sound, and I think a lot of it is due to the bass being tuned to the same octave as the guitars. Really sounds like the guitars thrmselves are fatter and more clanky while the bass isn’t too low in the mix to be audible.

  • @SanityEclipse532
    @SanityEclipse532 3 місяці тому +18

    Meshuggah actually thought of using 3 basses, then Ibanez luthier suggested to use 8 strings instead (correct me if I'm wrong). I guess this cover shows what could have been

    • @Return2TheLiving
      @Return2TheLiving 3 місяці тому +1

      Going an extra octave below will require having thick enough strings AND a long enough scale length (37” scale length for the bass) and your cheapest option is a rondo bass for about $500 and the quality isn’t great from what I’ve heard. Ibanez has a BTB bass for about $1100 and then dingwalls such as Baenas for $2500 or so.

    Real talk regarding bass and lower tunings. Do you guys tune your bass down an octave from the guitar or just play the same octave as the guitar? I have pondered this and tried both but what is the general consensus on this?

    • @RogerUp1
      @RogerUp1 3 місяці тому

      If the tuning is lower than G then it's better to play the same octave. Bass is gonna make guitar sound beefier. Cause when it's below G, bass tuned octave down is almost inaudible and it almost makes no sense to play low notes like that

      That's what I did. Figured if I was gonna get a 7 then I might as well just get an 8 for a similar price since I was really starting to get into Meshuggah at the time. I got a Harley Benton QBB 8 for around $350 and put a Lundgren M8 in it and it sounds great. I hear the cheaper ibanez 8 strings are pretty decent too.

    • @Sasquatch33
      @Sasquatch33 3 місяці тому

      @@tatocta Just be prepared, you are getting what you're paying for. While it does have locking tuners and a thru neck, It also has a lot of neck dive, and the fret ends are pretty sharp. The biggest problem I've had with it is that the nut slots aren't cut wide/deep enough for the 7th and 8th strings so any string gauge bigger than around 74+ won't actually fit into the slot which then creates a lot of buzz. I've been using d'addarios 9-65 because they're really the only ones that fit snug, but they do work.
      Other than that it's a really nice guitar for the price, no dead frets, no loose knobs, tuners etc. I've been thinking of just taking it to a Luthier to fix those things because it wouldn't be too much work.
