I cannot call 11-12 OZ a racing shoe, - 8-9 OZ is the target weight for me and for some reason this is the most important attribute. Recently - Saucony Endorphin Pro/2 my favorites ( 8 oz) not 12, but I get it, Puma looks great otherwise. Thanks for the review..!
Curious - why get Superblast 2 and not the DN3? Asking because I have both DN2 and Superblast 1 (love both) and am considering between DN3 and Superblast 2 now
@@teewaikay as a heavier than normal guy, i love dn2 for speed sessions and medium distances but i don't trust myself wearing them for sessions that take longer than an hour.
Man that Nitro logo makes me wince every time I see it. I really don't think we're in the era of foams selling shoes anymore, when the performance of foams seem to vary wildly per shoe.
@@EDDBUD great to know as I’m thinking over buying the deviate 3 vs the brooks hyperion max… I prefer a softer ride but not squishy…decisions decisions
v2 is one of my favorites, but it is the shoe where my feet overpronates the most. It's due to the narrow base on the midfoot. And it's not just narrow, it's angled like an "S" so the inner/medial side of my midfoot is practically hanging on air. The 2nd issue is the pointy toebox. My toes aren't allowed to splay naturally. Other than that I love the overall feel of the shoe. Just need to navigate more carefully on flat surfaces. I wish they made the toebox similar to the Foreverrun, and widened the base on the midfoot. They could have resized the small cutout to avoid adding weight. Oh well, I guess they didn't want to change it too much, but I think it's too little too late.
Shoe manufacturers should really have a massive justification for increasing weight in running shoes from one version to another. Does not sound like Puma can justify the weight in this case. Might be more tempted to try the Mizuno Rebellion Flash 2 when the DN2s are due for replacement.
I bought the V2 after watching your review and I love them. Can't say I'm a fan of the NITRO logo on the V3 but if they run as well as the V2 then I guess I'll put up with it
Really enjoyed 2 for long runs, daily runs and 5k tempo runs but midsole started to bottom out at 300km eventually taken out of rotation at 400km. Oh and sometimes between then it started to shed pieces of the outsole.
Video idea for you… a series of videos called “music that keeps me moving”. You could recommend music for long endurance runs or up-tempo runs etc. I’d love to see you do some commentary and recommendations. I’d certainly watch those videos too! Keep up the great work!
The weight increase can probably be explained as Puma attempting to reposition the Deviate Nitro as their "super trainer" rather than the more speed shoe it was before. Looking at their Nitro lineup right now you have the Fast-R as their out-and-out marathon option, the Fast-FWD as their 5k/10k racer and speed shoe(so their Takumi Sen equivalent even if it is a bit pricier RRP), the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 as their more versatile option that can do both and the likes of the Velocity, Magnify and Foreverrun filling in the various other roles. What they're missing is a "super trainer"; essentially built like a daily trainer but with the foam, plates and technology that started out in top end shoes and designed to be a versatile shoe that can do everything pretty well but is probably best as a long-run shoe for marathon training. Hence this; heavier because the focus has changed from being an uptempo daily trainer you can do fast efforts and speed sessions in (which the 2 was) to being a daily trainer you can do long efforts at marathon pace in. Will it work? I'm not sure for this first take on it. Outside of someone who desperately needs the best outsole Puma's selling point has always been value; their shoes may be just a *tiny* bit worse than comparable options from other brands but they're also considerably cheaper (and tend to be more durable). On paper that's the same here; at RRP £150 it's considerably cheaper than most of the super trainer type shoes from the other brands. The problem is most of those brands are onto the second or third version of their super trainer or at the very least are soon to release an update. That means discounts for those older editions and from the reviews of this shoe I've seen so far it's going to be hard to recommend this over a discounted Speed 3, Superblast, SC trainer, Boston 12 etc. Now almost every shoe struggles to win a value battle against discounted previous editions but that becomes more of an issue when being good value is one of the biggest selling points. My cynical side also thinks that maybe they've got a lot of Fast-FWD's hanging around in warehouses and they don't want to risk cannibalizing their sales. The Deviate Nitro Elite is already a lightweight carbon-plated racer that is really good at shorter distances while also being able to handle the longer ones in the way a Fast-FWD basically can't. If the plain Deviate Nitro was still a really lightweight plated daily trainer than could do speed sessions really well then there'd be even more questions about what the point of the Fast-FWD is then their already are. This way at least they can point to the Fast-FWD and say it's the one you want for 5k/10k races and any speed focused training.
The Novablast 3 and 4 are equally loud to this, for me. I feel like I’m a fairly nimble runner but the world knows when I’m coming in either of those lol
I use all the eyelets whenever possible. Two shoes where that really helped the lockdown were the ZoomX Invincible and the Pegasus 39. But I had to replace the stock laces to do it.
Interesting review. I can't see a world where I won't buy a pair of these, but I'll definitely wait for them to get rid of that Nitro text on other models. V2 was my parkrun shoe of choice, interesting you think this'll be better at longer distance stuff.
V2 feels like 6mm drop rather than 8mm stated in some websites, when comparing with other 6/8 mm shoes. I love the 6mm drop and am quite hesitated about stated 10mm drop.
Thanks for the review. Strange that they didn't fit the heel issue by narrowing down to more of a v shape than the rounded heel - which they did change between the VN2 and VN3. Didn't bother me much - but I know it did for some people. Somehow this colourway (and big logo!) doesn't look as good as it does on the Elite V3. However, I see Puma have 4 other colourways already available as of today. Loved the DN2, but will give this one a miss for now. The Brooks Hyperion Max 2 could well be the better alternative for me. Similar specs - looks great in the pics as well (plus big Brooks logo on the side!)
Thanks buddy. A new version is supposed to improve on the previous one and this one does the opposite it seems. Both upper (which was perfect in the DN2, why the hell change it...) and midsole a little degraded, plus the shoe is heavier. as well? Summary: Puma completely failed here. What a shame. How difficult was it to at least not degrade it?! Only the looks are improved, but that won't be enough to persuade me. Good stuff Puma, I have 2 DN2's and I really wanted to add some variety and you give me the perfect excuse lol. Still tempted by the DN3 elite though, to put on whenever I feel like a PB, which is almost never nowadays!
I logged 900k with v.2. In the beginning, I didn't like them, but they were a real workhorse. Only caveat for puma, they did not come in half sizes for sizes above 11uk. The increase in weight for the v.3 will probably hold me away for my 11.5uk (if they made it available). Good job Ed
I also experience heel slip on v2. I think it is the convex & concave shape inside the heel. The concave is only 50% not holding anything and convex or padded area is 50%. Other good fitting shoes have concave 75% & convex 25% shape, so it is actually holding the heel down. ~ Hopefully we see some cut in half review to finally confirm the stack height.
I alternate between my Puma DN2 and Superblast version 1s and honestly think if I can, I will just pick up another pair of each as opposed to there respective updates.
Probably I will hunt for second pair of DN2 on bargain. I feel like DN3E is really big step forward in Deviate Elite series but I'm not sure where Puma want to be in Deviate series. DN2 was maybe too good shoe and maybe it should stay on the market and still be produced as benchmark shoe.
True though. Now I'm struggling to find a replacement here in Malaysia. DN2 is no longer available in store. I tried DN3, it is imo, feels like a totally different shoes. A bit aggressive. Feels like the changes are intended to differentiate it even more from the Deviate Elite this time. Makes sense for them to encourage people to go for the more expensive model, but a little disappointing for those of us who love the version 2.
I got an early version of this shoe from a French company that didn't respect the release date. 😂 I have 100 km on them. I think it's an improvement except for the heel fit for me. I had the same size as the Deviate 2s (men's North American size 9). I wish they would have made the heel like the Velocity 3s. I wouldn't say I like the heels as, like you, I had a heel slip in my left shoe, but not the right shoe with average lacing. 🤷🏻 I don't usually do a runner's loop, but for this shoe, I did, which solved the problem, but the heel is a fail IMHO. And that external heel shark thingy should be forgotten as it doesn't do anything that I could tell. As you mentioned, a simple, boring, harder insert heel counter works well and would have improved the heel. I don't care about the weight as I will use it for a daily trainer and the Velocity 3s, which I will likely use more than this one. I prefer this upper over the last version, except for the heel fit. Thanks for the candid review. 😊

@@EDDBUD After a few runs, I’m absolutely loving these. Great ride, cushion, and support; excellent build quality, and they look great too. I should’ve bought a few more pairs when they were on sale. I’m also using SL2, ride/cushion is excellent, feels very similar, almost identical to Deviate; however, my feet are rolling inward a little in SL2 (I have low arches). Of course SL2 doesn’t have replaceable insole 🤣😭.
The big nitro on the shoe doesn't bother me as they're on my feet so the feeling is the important bit...the V2 is nice used them for a half and we're fine. Now waiting for price crash of the V2 to pick up a spare pair.
Great video as always, any particular shoe you would recommend if on marathon prep but having to go on a family holiday to Disney world in, a bit of a do it all shoe where I can get some training in combined with 20,000+ steps a day ? I don’t want to sacrifice the shoes in my current rotation 😂
Ed, thanks for the review, try several Puma running shoes, such as Forever Nitro, Magnify Nitro, sizing is always the issue for me… size 5 are too big and size 4.5 is too narrow in the toe box. Sadly in the end, I have returned them all. I am also slightly overpronate not sure the DN3 is good for overpronate or not? Any advice?
Hi Edd. I am a huge fan of your channel. However most of the time you tend to skip the toebox width even if you don't have those stats do you mind at least to mention how it feels when running? Thank you
@EDDBUD I thought about the width of the shoes. You are an expert and to you it's enough to say typical puma shape and you know what it is or what it feels like. To me when I look for shoes it is vital to know if it will comfortably accommodate my feet. Are they narrow, narrowish, just about roomy enough or wide. That sort of thing 😳 Particularly when it comes to daily trainers when I'll spend most of my runs in them 🤗 Please consider this addition to your reviews. Thank you
Not a fan of the loud Nitro logo. It reminds me of the 'Speed' logo Skechers did with some of their models a few years back. Looks tacky but each to their own.
That is very weird on the stack height. They advertise the US Men's 9 as 39.5 or so mm. Bizarre they only sized up the stack height on the forefoot of your skis. Bigger shoe = less drop?
I don't like the endorphin speed. I over pronate and my calfs hurt when I wear them cuz the cushions too soft. I think these pumas would be better since they're stiffer on the cushion
Didn't get along with the V2 really. Felt super firm to me in the forefoot so I'll just go for the SB V2 and be done. Maybe the Mizuno Flash 2 to complement the SB V2...
@@tadejdanev5030 So many other better super trainers to me. I got mine for $65US on eBay so gave them away after 50 miles. The upper was far to warm for me also. It's 100+F and very high dew points here from April until mid September. Just was an OK shoe to me. If I had paid full price, I would have really been disappointed. I run in all brands (have probably 20 shoes in rotation), do some wear testing for brands and run 50-65mpw. Loved the Nitro Elite V1 & V2 and got along great with the Velocity V1/V2.
Would this be better for say training (such as running and hyrox) and the elite version just for racing? Or could you do all training aswell in elite version...or would this ruin the shoe quickly?
Does anyone have both the DN3 and Superblast V2 and able to share which one they prefer? I am aware the former is plated and the latter isn't so may not be in the same "category" but am torn between these two offerings. FWIW I have both the DN2 and Superblast V1 and LOVE both.

I cannot understand why Pumas numbers are almost always off. Version 2 had wackadoodle numbers too
Yeah the v2 and 3 are the same measurements for me
Puma USA currently 30% discount on all shoes. I just bought new Deviate Nitro 3 for $112! New Nitro Elite just $160, can’t go wrong.
Superb savings!
@@EDDBUDLol, my plodding running style certainly doesn’t justify a carbon plate, but at $112, couldn’t pass it up.
❤

I personally love the zoom fly 5 for speed day i never understood all the hate it gets lol 😂
Just couldn’t get on with that one!
🎉

The big nitro on the shoe doesn't bother me as they're on my feet so the feeling is the important bit...the V2 is nice used them for a half and we're fine. Now waiting for price crash of the V2 to pick up a spare pair.
Yeah on foot it won’t be seen really. That’s what counts
Great video as always, any particular shoe you would recommend if on marathon prep but having to go on a family holiday to Disney world in, a bit of a do it all shoe where I can get some training in combined with 20,000+ steps a day ? I don’t want to sacrifice the shoes in my current rotation 😂
This isn’t a bad choice or perhaps the sl2 from adidas.
Tried these on this weekend… definitely not a 10mm drop. 6-8mm seems likely.
If you have the V2 this one isn't worth the upgrade?
They are very close
Wish they'd do a version with the elite foam and no plate or a nylon plate. And I'm not interested in the Velocity or Magnify.
Maybe something on the horizon in that mould
@@EDDBUD
Now you have piqued my interest Budd. Keep up the great work.
how do you measure the drop? Run Repeat cut it in half and they actually measured it higher than the 10mm advertised, at 10.1mm.
No idea where they got that from. The heel to toe drop isn’t as high as that
Ed, thanks for the review, try several Puma running shoes, such as Forever Nitro, Magnify Nitro, sizing is always the issue for me… size 5 are too big and size 4.5 is too narrow in the toe box. Sadly in the end, I have returned them all. I am also slightly overpronate not sure the DN3 is good for overpronate or not? Any advice?
The base is nice and stable in the v2/3. I can see it being decent for that
This actually might be the year. Playing crap and still advancing, makes you wonder. Idk, have a soft spot for Puma runnnig shoes. Love the V2.
Bellingham goal is straight out of escape to victory.
Thanks for the review! The v2 was my favourite race shoe! It seems the v3 does not sound too exciting. 🤔
It’s got that bit heavier. More a trainer perhaps now
@@EDDBUD Looks like Beast is not going to return them to you though! 😆
@@bhky she likes these very much.
Hi Edd. I am a huge fan of your channel. However most of the time you tend to skip the toebox width even if you don't have those stats do you mind at least to mention how it feels when running?
Thank you
I think I’ve mentioned it in almost all recent videos. It’s a typical Puma shape with quick lateral taper
That sort of thing 😳 Particularly when it comes to daily trainers when I'll spend most of my runs in them 🤗
Please consider this addition to your reviews.
Thank you
Not a fan of the loud Nitro logo. It reminds me of the 'Speed' logo Skechers did with some of their models a few years back. Looks tacky but each to their own.
Did you get the elite version too?
Yes I have already reviewed it
That is very weird on the stack height. They advertise the US Men's 9 as 39.5 or so mm. Bizarre they only sized up the stack height on the forefoot of your skis. Bigger shoe = less drop?
The v2 and v3 for me measure the same. Something amiss somewhere.
Worth sticking around right to the end for “absolute tripe”. 😂
Heaven knows what my non Uk viewers think of that.
Another reason for me to save. 😅
"The cats over at Puma..."
That alone was worth the tune-in 😂.
They are cool cats too
I don't like the endorphin speed. I over pronate and my calfs hurt when I wear them cuz the cushions too soft. I think these pumas would be better since they're stiffer on the cushion
Yes a little more firm here compared to the speed
Do you do for walking shoes as well? If not, can you recommend anyone who does? Thank you
Many of the non plated running shoes could work for this
How is the heel? Unfortunately i had blisters after 4,5km.....in version 2.
It’s similar in fairness never had an issues with the v2 or this one
If I can get same price for velocity 3 and deviate 3, which one is better for a daily trainer that can do some intervals once a week? 🙏
Deviate is the one 👍🏼
is it suitable for daily trainer, slow pace for 5km - 10km?
For me a good steady pace type shoe. Should hit the spot
Didn't get along with the V2 really. Felt super firm to me in the forefoot so I'll just go for the SB V2 and be done. Maybe the Mizuno Flash 2 to complement the SB V2...
so you didnt like DV2 at all?
@@tadejdanev5030 So many other better super trainers to me. I got mine for $65US on eBay so gave them away after 50 miles. The upper was far to warm for me also. It's 100+F and very high dew points here from April until mid September. Just was an OK shoe to me. If I had paid full price, I would have really been disappointed. I run in all brands (have probably 20 shoes in rotation), do some wear testing for brands and run 50-65mpw. Loved the Nitro Elite V1 & V2 and got along great with the Velocity V1/V2.
The SB2 is top of my list right now
@@EDDBUD I just need that "clean" colorway I'm seeing in other places!
@@EDDBUD 200€ cries in corner :P
Would this be better for say training (such as running and hyrox) and the elite version just for racing? Or could you do all training aswell in elite version...or would this ruin the shoe quickly?
It’s a good shoe for some steady pace. Just feel it’s a bit more shoe than the last version without any major push forward in terms of ride.
Does anyone have both the DN3 and Superblast V2 and able to share which one they prefer? I am aware the former is plated and the latter isn't so may not be in the same "category" but am torn between these two offerings. FWIW I have both the DN2 and Superblast V1 and LOVE both.
The dn3 is very close to the 2. The Superblast 1 and 2 appear more different between the versions than the Puma.
@@EDDBUD nice to know. if you had to pick just one shoe, (DN3 vs SB2) which would you go for?
Hi Eddbud I’m 6ft 2 and 18 stone with a bad back. Decent national runner back in the day 32 min 10k times. Just starting to get back into running with some long walks to start off with. What shoe would you recommend for me that will take me from walking to running? Any advice would be welcome thanks
@@al1356 this could work well though depends on your foot width. Does taper a bit in the front. Try the magnify nitro 👍🏼
@@EDDBUD thank you for the reply, I will take a look at them and let you know what I end up going for.
Picked up a pair of the Pums’s as suggested, great shoe. Also bought the ASICS Nimbus 25s to rotate. Very different but love them both, thanks for advice.
The writing on the wall, england you mean😂
It’s a tough watch right now
Edd, for the same price would you get V2 or V3?
Same price? V3
@@EDDBUD interesting, thank you. I loved V2 but due to massive feet I can find any in the sale, but Puma have the full price on their website.
Is it worth buying the 3s now or just wait for them to go on discount. I have the 2s and still have a ton miles on them.
They are close especially considering the midsole construction
Sounds like it moved away from the Endorphin Speed 4 & closer to an SC Trainer V2.
I hope it’s a 6 mm drop
It is 👍🏼
I found V2 a bit stiff (for me), is this version softer?
It’s very similar.
@@EDDBUD cheers 👍
Skip the “NITRO” on the medial side! 👍
Kinda like that Nitro logo tbh…it’s big, it’s brash but then why not shout the fact you’ve invested in your running & your fitness? But then, almost immediately, insidiously, the English reserve kicks in…and the beige nondescripts get another outing :(
It’s somehow not as prominent on this model
Multiple lines of 'Southgate, you're the one, you still turn me on' is enough to give anyone a viral condition 🤢
Hope you don’t have glow worms.
@@EDDBUD 😂
So you listened to the track too 😂 I don’t remember it charting but the internet says it got to 14 on the hit parade
Heavier and a greater drop. What a shame. Wont be buying these. Its either dn2 again if still available when i need a replqcement or something new. Its to make the elite more worth buying
No the drop is the same. I mention this early on
So sounds like they really upgraded the nitro elite v3, but nitro v3 is about the same. I guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it haha
Big update on the elite 3. Wearing my pair right now
It's coming home 😂
I hope they at least improve today 🦁🦁🦁
@@EDDBUD not looking good bruv
@@TheValonquar Not a good showing so far. All at sea at the back and only small signs of scoring
I don’t mind the nitro logo but I really don’t care for the puma cat. Go figure…..
👊🏼🤖‼️
Much appreciated
