1967 MGB Roadster Vintage Racer - One Take

  • This 1967 MGB is a replica of what a period factory works Group 5 race car would have been like. It makes 130 HP from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, weighs around 1,800 LBS, and makes a spectacular cackle at full throttle and when coming down off compression; an absolutely brilliant driving experience.

    Leather bonnet and boot straps
    Minilite style 14" wheels

    Best MGB video on the web! This what these cars were designed for. Back in the early 70's I had a highly tuned 67 Midget for a while followed by a 1966 MGB GT in stock trim lastly a mild tune Spitfire.
    But the BEST by far was a 64 MGB roadster I built for my then best girl now wife of 40plus years.
    It was sweet....larger SU's ...1 3/4". I polished the head and ports by hand. The cam was a one off ground by a local racer/machinist. Monza exhaust ...re-arched springs better sway bars...the stronger trans out of a later B but sadly no overdrive. Larger tires on GT rims...they were wider than stock 64 wheels. I painted it myself.."Glacier White"
    It really is the "sound" that holds my memories...blasting down an old railway causeway converted to tarmack at 100mph my god.
    Estimated HP was in the 110 to 120 range.....a joke by today's standards but the excitement metre was off the scale.
    Few know these jewels came with steel cranks...very good rods and good balance from the factory. This why you can have so much fun for so little money.
    Kids are grown and gone so I'm building another Spitfire but really want another B. Thanks for the inspiration.

      I am in the process of a similar build on my 1964 ( rust free) Iris Blue (original factory racing color at LeMans). Building up a 5 main motor and contemplating a 5 speed rather than sourcing a factory gearbox w/o'drive.Fun cars. Relatively cheap to build and bullet proof.

    That was one fabulous sounding B series engine. There are fewer greater sounds in motoring than a finally tuned B and that is probably one of the best.

      @johnpearson492 6 років тому

      I agree this is very good. It is nearly identical in sound to the A series in my Sprite. More or less the best part of the car is the sound combined with the immense sense of speed.

    I must have watched this a half dozen times in the last few days... alright, alright, FINE; I'll go resurrect my '79! Hot damn, the sound of this one - mine already has a Weber DGV 32/36 in it with a stainless exhaust, but it ended up getting parked twenty years ago before we finished the project, so I've never actually heard it sing in that configuration. Hang on tight, bank account!
    Cheers to Tyson and his dad - I hope you guys are still rocking this thing up and down HWY 1 :)
    EDIT (a year later): Revisiting this video while it's cold outside. Got mine up and running last year - basically needed a general service and tune-up, new consumables, and drilling some strategically-placed little holes in the carburetor to get the DGV to play nice with the 1800cc engine. Holy buckets, such fun!

    I believe the siamese exhaust port (for cylinders 2 & 3) adds to the wonderful sound the B-series motors make. The Sprite & Midget A-series engine shares that design and exhaust character.

    cool ride.. a good friend of mine was given an MG B for his 15th or 16th birthday and I still remember the noise that thing made taking a ride in it. Sounds like you are doing every bit of double the actual speed at all times.

      These old British sports cars were long stroke/small bore engines, I think that played a part in the throaty note they had. Modern designs are all about large bore/short stroke/high rpm.

      The 1.4L MultiAir Turbo sounds pretty good. Not as raspy, but it's still throaty.

    Cool car, in much better shape than many I saw back in the 70's in shops I worked, stock many didn't see the maintenance they should have had and had gacked motors, the wiring is often a problem as well. Its cool though, a car you can be in full race mode in and nobody else knows lol.. :) Light and nimble though and the burbling sounds are pretty fun.

      Chester I recently purchased a 71 MGB. I brought it in right away for new exhaust and told the guys to just install a resonator for now. If it’s to loud we can install a muffler later. One month and several hundred miles later, it still has just a resonator on it. Sounds very similar to this one. My son said “no way are we putting a muffler on this thing” 🤣

      It is a 2.25" pipe, single exit, with a 18" glass pack towards the rear. Very built engine though, that is mostly what you're hearing

      Thanks! What's been done to the engine, besides the obvious?

    What exhaust do you have on that? Tourist Trophy? Is it headers + exhaust?

    • @tysonkluss715

      Traditional headers and generic 18” glasspack muffler but the sound is really provided by the engine. That exhaust on a stock engine and cam will not sound as good

      What about a Triumph GT6 (hardtop Spit essentially) with a 3s-ge and 6-speed out of a Toyota Altezza? That's my current project car.

      SR20det would be easier since they already have a Nissan 5-speed... then, turbo noises!

    If you liked this"B", you'll love mine, if I ever get mine sorted and nice (tube frame, custom A-arms front, coilovers all around, discs all around, 4-link rear, 4-speed- heres the kicker-500hp SBC-alum.rods, .600 lift solid roller cam, etc.) I'll bring it down from Northern California

    im sure the MGB was a hard top and the MG was the soft/ convertible?

    • @andrewthomason3857
      @andrewthomason3857 6 років тому +4

      MG was the brand (marque). B was the open car; B-GT was the hardtop.

    You can really see how much bigger an MGB is than a Midget now they have done both.
