Watch The Empire Strikes Back theatrical trailer, which debuted in fall 1979 and gave audiences their first look at the sequel to Star Wars. In addition to a sampling of scenes taken from the entire movie, the trailer surprisingly features footage that was cut from the final film, including a kiss between Luke and Leia, C-3PO removing a warning sticket from a door in the Rebel base on Hoth, and more. Most interesting, however, is the voiceover -- provided by none other than Harrison Ford himself.

"And Romance" *cuts to Brother Sister kiss*
+RogueEagle twin brother and sister!
It wasn't till writing of RotJ Luke and Leia were siblings
+Kyle Campbell not true "No. there is another"
+Joseph McKay That suggests there's another Jedi, not that Leia and Luke are sisters. Granted, Leia is seen hearing Luke as the end, but that just implies that Leia can use the force. It in NO way implies they're brother and sister.
That's Han
I can almost see Harrison Ford rolling his eyes while reading the script for this trailer.
rennmaxbeta um yaaasa
It's such a difference from the temp music version with the serious voiceover. I can hear them directing him in the booth: "Peppier! Brighter! More fun!"
I thought this one came after, but given the unused footage and temp title treatment at the end, I think it came first.
Should've done the Blade Runner narration in the same manner. They definitely would've removed sooner.
I like trailers that don't talk. In fact I think that's why they stopped talkin in trailers is because it always sounded so weird and no one likes to be spoiled we liked it better when we have to guess.
It almost sounds like he's aping Paul Frees' narration for Hardware Wars...
while the movie still felt modern, this trailer is sooooo 70's...
+RandomUserX99 Actually no, this trailer is trying to pay homage to old movie serials, it's not in a 70s style.
+Cathal Ryan can you please send me a link to a 'typical' 70's trailer, would be interesting to see
+Cathal Ryan Star Wars itself is an homage to those serials, like Flash Gordon.
But it was made in the 80s!
Parker Pshebnisky 1979 still counts as the 70's dumbass
When you learn Harrison Ford did the voiceover for this trailer 😳
Zac Fertig I had to watch it a second time after reading your comment...holy cow!!!
Wow.
i just noticed that lol
I refuse to believe that
I could tell right away, instantly recognize Harrison Ford's voice. It sounds just like he did during Blade Runner when questioning Zhora
"A galactic odyssey against oppression". Cuts to C3-PO tearing off a hazard sign on a door.
2 edgy 4 me.
i know
E D G E
Deleted scene. A bunch of Wampas break into the base and the rebels herd them into that room. 3PO then buys them some time by ripping the sign and misleading the arriving snow troops into believing there are rebels hiding this room. Why this was cut is beyond me, it's awesome and many claim it wasn't included because "it didn't fit" 3P0's cowardly nature, which in my opinion is a bunch of BS.
@@Big0taz0 It was likely cut because a comedic scene would destroy all the tension set up during the base battle. Lucas got to wreck it all he wanted in ROTJ with Ewoks.
@@Big0taz0 It might've been cut because the hazard sign was made of paper and that was one of the rules Lucas had when making star wars, no paper allowed.
"It's an epic of romance!" Cuts to Vader torturing Han.
+Cybermat47 What trailer did you watch?
+Polymerized the version that played in my diseased mind.
Cybermat47 It cut to Luke and Leia.
+Polymerized and Luke and Leia are related 😂😂 and they kiss each other like they are in love
+shelby Mathews Well no one knew that until episode six came out in 1980...
Could Harrison say it in a more sarcastic tone?
Why he's my favorite.
That was Harrison?
@Andrew Nugent Read description
yes
Haha
(1:29) Fun Fact: This is actually a clip from a deleted scene where, during the battle of Hoth, C-3PO takes the label of a room filled with Wampas and tricks the Snowtroopers into thinking that's where they went, leading to their demise.
Pacing, it didn't fit. They also thought that C-3PO doing something smart and helpful would be out or character.
+Marcus Kavanagh Copy n paste this up above. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Deleted Scenes [1080p HD] The scene in question starts at 3:45
Ladondorf
knew that one!
Jesus Christ that would’ve been awful!
The Wampa Strikes Back
It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on.
+Darth Sibistine It's like poetry; it's like they rhyme.
+Brian Tully I want a pizza roll.
dulcetpine Post a comment on my webzone and I'll send ya a pizza roll.
F*** you Rick Berman
+Darth Sibistine I may have gone too far in a few places.
Wow I can't wait until this comes out!!!
CSC NO WAY

+Xenoforge78 Same
+Xenoforge78 I know right???? OMG SO EXCITED!
Do it! I hear there is a twist on the movie that will blow you away!
#ThisDayInHistory 1979 - The first ever showing of a trailer featuring live action from The Empire Strikes Back is screened at the San Diego Comic-Con. Not to be outdone, Disney premieres its trailer for The Black Hole in the same room the following hour.
I don't recall that clip of Threepio ripping the sign off the wall at 1:29. and that sounded like Harrison Ford narrating the trailer. :)
Probably my favorite of them all.
***** Deleted scene. I have the clip on my page if you're interested.
I cringed big time when Princess Leia was kissing her brother, Luke. BLECK!! - and yeah that DOES sound like Harrison Ford
Dale Jackson But at the time they didn't know, as we, that they were brother and sister. Probably George either for that matter.
That saber pull was probably the coolest thing ever back in 1979.
Plus Vader’s breathing continuing after the end of the trailer, genius
I can hear the sarcasm in his voice when he says “and romance”
"Continuing the adventures of our band of heroes..."
*Luke drops dead*
"Luke Skywalker !"
He's not dead... Duh there would be no trilogy if he died
xD
rip
Lol I'm dying
U have the same DP as mine!!!
0:36 I love how THAT'S the clip they use to introduce the hero. LOL!
This is easily the best Star Wars film.
+PuffinPD JR I love all 3 of the original trilogy and The Force Awakens though. Revenge of the Sith is pretty good too.
Jojo717 I also loved Revenge Of The Sith. And The Force Awakens is great too, it doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets
Aman Jain Not a big fan of Disney Star Wars, but rogue one is by far the best they got
Eh, I like revenge of the sith better
I like Return of Jedi better
So much alternate footage.
@Ricochett 1983 There are scenes in the trailer that were not in the final movie
I didn't see anything I didn't recognise from the film and I saw it when it was first released in 1980
@@YortOK C-3PO ripping off the 'wampa sticker' was the only thing I saw.
+yortko1 Lando his guards and his personal aide Lobot, walking down the Bespin corridor isn't in the film at; 1:48
@@goldfishprime Also Luke and Leia about to kiss
This trailer has more cuts than a Marvel fight scene.
@Joshua White stfu
@Joshua White Dumbass.
@@uilliam6926 Ah, yes. The wild Star Wars fan. Found in Europe and the Americas, the wild Star Wars fan is VERY dangerous. If you say anything bad about Star Wars, they will you call you a dumbass. Like seriously, dude. I love Star Wars and then it's my favorite movie series,.but he just stated his opinion. No need to bash on him.
Empire Strikes Back is still the best Star Wars film
thepunkster90x Nope Revenge of the Sith is.
thepunkster90x wrong its the best film
@A King: lol
Its the truth. But any Original Trilogy fanboy wouldn't see it.. -_-
A King Oh let me guess you care more about battles and explosions more than a story with characters that we care about
anyone notice that Harrison Ford is narrating this trailer lol
He probably despises the script he had to say
Interesting. At 1:29 you can see a fragment of the deleted scene where C3PO removes the Wampa warning, which ends up getting several Stormtroopers killed.
Imaculata that is interesting. Because nothing says "a galactic struggle against oppression" like ripping a sticker off a door!
Hahaha, aint that the truth. In hindsight, I'm glad that scene got cut. It was kind of silly.
Imaculata Ah so thats why you see wampas inside the base during the battle in Shadows of the Empire (N64 game9 :D
Avataq Jensen
Possibly. Or maybe they just spammed them as enemies, since it was in the movie. I'm not sure if they were aware of deleted scenes when they made the game.
+Imaculata Omg that has to be a deleted scene. I wish they kept it though xP
Hard to believe Empire is now 40. Happy Birthday Empire! Even though I was born in 1992, I opted to watch the original version of the movie to celebrate.
If you were born in '92, you haven't seen the original.
@@reh3884 Back in 2006, they came out with a 2-DVD set of all 3 OT films. The DVDs were the originals and the '04 version of the films.
The Empire Strikes Back is one of the greatest films of all time and the best Star Wars in the saga. This movie is so great that I can't get how there are some people who actually dislike this film
Those must be Ruin Johnson fans.... everybody else likes it.
They're just special
I just wish they would make an extended edition of this movie with the deleted scenes in it. It's too great to only be a little over two hours. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
1:09 me too
What makes The Empire Strikes Back as a great sequel is the fact that it dwelled into the characters a lot more. The first film was fun and full of action and we meet the characters. This masterpiece took a much darker tone in terms of learning who Luke really is, the growing relationship of Solo and Leia and Vader's inner conflicts with himself.
This may go down as the best sequel I've ever seen.
Ummm... Godfather II holds that title and it's not even close.
@@SopranoPizzaJMFNJHaven't seen the second of the Godfather Trilogy but if I see it then I might disagree
@@marvincorre4783 Love Empire and it's the Best of all the Star Wars movies. Godfather II just might be the best movie ever made. There's no comparison.
One of the greatest movies ever, didn't truly appreciate it until I had grown up.
I was a drive-in to watch a re-release of Star Wars in 1979 when the preview for Empire Strikes Back took hold of the screen. I could think of little else during junior high.
Holy crap Harrison Ford did the voiceover for this!
One of the greatest sequels of all time
Imagine if this trailer was made today? "Luke I am your fa- COMING SUMMER 1980"
Happy 40th anniversary to The Empire Strikes Back.
I think what they meant at 0:46 was..."And introducing, the first black man in Star Wars!"
Sean Harrison Until Episode 7!
But...James Earl Jones never had the body type for Darth Vader! How did they pull that off I wonder...
Stefan Vella James Earl Jones only did the voice, the body was another actor.
@@everythingsith8490 Vader is only Voiced by James Earl Jones.
Chewy is black
"A galactic odyssey against oppression!"
Cuts to C3PO tearing off hazard sight!
Awww the 70s!!😂
Harrison Ford sounds like he's rolling his eyes as he says this. Wouldn't surprise me. It's pretty corny.
Still the best movie ever
wesrf 3 rw3a
I think misread Ford and his attitude towards SW. His complaints were all about use of character - not that he thought it was trash.
I swear, that voice sounds like Harrison Ford.
it is read the description
It's him
There's like 3 shots from deleted scenes in here.
DestronTC Luke and Leia kissing and im like "nonono ew ewwe" xD
was that Harrison Ford narrating the trailer?
Good ear. I only knew it after reading the description
+Wisam Safi I thought it was pretty obvious.
Luke Gibson Its not everyday that an actor nitrates his own movie....! (also he had his movie thriller voice, i couldn't detect it... :)
Wisam Safi me too
Yes
I really feel the excitement in Harrison Fords voice. Especially at 0:40 when he said princess leia
Is it just me or was marketing techniques back then just explosions and more explosions? Because that's what I mostly see
LieutenantOfSkyArmy How's that different from now?
***** good point.
***** Now the allota movies are just explosions and more explosions
NightHunter909 [AreteGaming] and yeah that makes it look more exciting seriously and it was really exciting lol.
+NightHunter909 [AreteGaming] Look at the new Force Awakens trailer..TONS of explosions!
Isn't that Harrison Ford doing the voiceover? How incredibly cheesy if that's him trying to sell the movie in his best "In a world..." voice!
Yep, absolutely it's him. The way he pronounces 'Lando CalriZZian' is the ultimate giveaway. He says it just like he does in the film!
Harrison Ford has always had a soft spot for cheesy comedy like this.
This is not only the best Star Wars movie, but one of the best sequels ever made, it’s up there with The Godfather Part 2. This film has always been my favorite of the Saga and the one I have the most nostalgia with since first seeing it when I was 4/5 years old
2 minutes long and they didn't spoil anything about the story. By today's trailer standards, we would have known the entire plot from start to finish. surprises and all! Good old original Star Wars! :)
Aeterno Entertainment they also didn’t even show the best visual effects- the speeders attacking the walkers.
"Biggest smash hit of all time". Finally they get it right on a movie trailer.
My favorite stars wars movie ever. the right mixture of live action and special effects.
Still one of the best movies ever made!
I still remember the sheer excitement that I had when I 1st saw the trailer after seeing the paperback novel....
Such a different time!
Fun fact: After recording this voiceover, Harrison Ford needed a 5-month nap.
Not a bad trailer. It was made in a day when they didn't feel like spoiling every money shot and plot twist. There's no way it would be made today without a shot of the giant space worm, Han Solo encased in carbonite, Luke and Darth Vader duelling and Darth Vader saying to Luke "Join me, and together, we can rule the galaxy..." or "Obi-Wan never told you..."
The production hid very well the part of "I'm your father" I can imagine the reaction of the people that see that scene for first time in the cinemas
"It's an epic of romance"
First thing they show is Luke and Leia kissing. Episode Six rolls around. Man, you *never* saw that coming.
I cannot believe that is Harrison Ford's voice, and I cannot believe it took me 40 years to know this
top 10 reasons why this is the best SW movie.
1. Imperial march theme was introdused for the first time.
2. I am your father.
3. Luke meets Yoda.
4. Boba Fett.
5. Irvin Kershner directing.
6. It´s the darkest of the 6 movies (a little more than Revange of the Sith).
7. The Hoth battle.
8. Han, Leia, C-3PO and Chewbacca escaping the Empire.
9. Han and Leias relationship.
10. Carbon-freezing chamber.
Revenge of the Sith is the darkest.
The Hoth Battle is so extremely memorable.
@@Mors_Umber Too bad it sucked.
How is this movie darker than revenge of the sith?
11. The good guys don't win for once
It’s scary to hear Harrison Ford sound this animated.
One of the greatest movies of all time
One of the greatest sequels of all time
Best Star wars movie
,,I am your father"
Wow, I can't believe Empire Strikes Back came out 40 years ago. Yes, FORTY YEARS AGO! How time flies.
Best film in the series hands down
Always will be.
Happy 40th anniversary of I am your father
Watching this while in quarantine
Anyone from 2020?
Happy 40th anniversary to “The Empire Strikes Back”!
"A galactic odyssey against opression"
*shows C-3PO removing a "do not pass" sign*
This is probably the most rebellious thing C-3PO has ever done.
This movie is gonna be great!!
Now that's an exciting trailer. I bet it was awesome to see this unexpectedly in 79 in the theater.
I'm watching this right after re-watching the trailer for The Force Awakens. The difference in how trailers are made now is incredible.
"The continuing Story of our Band of Heroes!
Luke Skywalker!"
*Luke falls half Dead onto the Ground*
Am I the only one who likes episode 6 the best ?
Episode 6 is my fav
The best in my opinion
One of the biggest reasons the sixth episode got a lot of hate was because of the Ewoks. They were like a teddy bear species that made Star Wars kind of awkward.
+Jayanth Krishnamurthy Yeah when rewatching I came to realize how they're only there to waste 30 minutes of screen time. Whatever bits of story the sixth movie has is great, but there isn't really enough of it. It's quite a shallow movie.
+Fozible yinka Empire still my favorite, RotJ second :)
SPOILER ALERT!
Sean Bean dies!
Lol, as an infant?
next summer i cant wait :))
Ur using Internet Explorer right? XD
Killah841 hahaha. I see what you did there.
The best film in the entire saga.
Them trailers back then were like promotional videos/advertisement. lol
Thats exactly what they are today
Those were the 80s bro
I can’t wait for this movie to come out!
Happy 40th Anniversary!
Empire Strikes Back turns 40 today!
2016, Empire Strikes Back back in theatres and in 3D. A glorious day it will be!
One of my favorite movie the second chapter of the star wars trilogy the empire strikes back
Happy 40th anniversary, Empire Strikes Back!
I was born a decade after this was trailer was made but the 80s must've great time to see blockbusters.
Love the fact that Harrison Ford narrated this trailer. Oh and seeing C3PO tear off the warning sign on the door.
This is from back in the day when the movie was better than the trailer.
I would love to see a trailer in this style for episode VII.
hehe, i think not, as cool as this kind of trailer can be, the "Cinematic" ones are way more epic, and causes more impact :p
Complete with Harrison Ford voiceover... ;)
An epic by likes of which you've seen before!
1:03 my favorite part
GOOD OLD MEMORIES..
So pumped for next Summer! 😃
The best movie in the world
If this really is Harrison Ford doing the voice over, it sounds like he's doing it sarcastically. And I love it
Harrison Ford did the voiceover for this preview commercial. He has a very distinct vocal pattern, like we all do, and this is definitely him. In Blade Runner he did a similar voice when he did the seen w/the Snake Woman he "Retired".
this is the best star wars ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back then when the movie was released, people hated it because they felt like it wasn’t as fun as the original movie, now looking at this movie 40 years later, this is one of the greatest movies ever made
Best effects ever! And a great story too!
I saw this trailer at the cinema in late autumn or early winter of 1979. I will never forget it. The crowd went NUTS clapping and cheering. (To younger people: this was over ten years before the Internet became a public phenomenon, so no one had seen or even expected the trailer. It was a total surprise.) I don't think that anyone could tell that it was Harrison Ford providing the voiceover.
Then, at the end, he said those final two words: "... next summer." Immediately, many viewers belted out loud cries of despair and disappointment. It was hilarious! 😆
wow. trailers back in the day...
This movie is perfect, my problems with it are so small, they can't even be considered problems. The characters are much more developed and is even more memorable than the last time around, which is saying a lot. There are just a couple other installments I like a bit more, but this one is definitely top 4. 9.5/10 for a Star Wars movie
Still my favorite Star Wars film hands down the best.
The best movie trailers are the ones that don’t give away the story in 2 minutes. Like this one. The only thing audiences knew at the time this came out was that the fight with the Empire was far from over. That’s all you need.
It's amazing how cheesy trailers were back then! Although, I guess I would rather have cheesy trailers that don't spoil anything, unlike today's majority.
This wasn't a typical trailer even in those days. It was purposely done in an exaggerated, jokey, throwback style, hence Harrison Ford's goofy narration. It was clearly meant as an imitation of old style movie serial trailers of the '30s and '40s. The original Star Wars trilogy itself was meant to be a swashbuckling "Flash Gordon" throwback, so as an inside joke this trailer was done in an old school serial style.

@@TS-ev1bl Perfect explanation! Thank you!
Best one from star wars.. The ending twist🔥
Seeing this in 1979, my first thoughts about the plot was that all the heroes of SW were being kidnapped one at a time, as punishment. The point that stuck with me the most was Vader's head at the end.
First time seeing an 80 movies trailer and boy are they different from a trailer now
This is movie is called "The Empire Strikes Back"!!! Screw the "Episode V" title!
The best -star wars- film ever
Awesome Trailer - Imagine Seeing this trailer back in 1979 - incredible - I do remember going to see the movie back in 1980 with my Empire T Shirt On as well ( 8 years old )
Awesome Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Trailer.
