I've never read a book so fast! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

This episode made me strangely emotional. As someone who is dealing with the exact reactive issues in my dog that Chop has I know the feelings of fear and embarrassment that come with bringing your dog out in public. Seeing how much progress Chop has made is truly inspiring. You should be so proud and happy for all you and Chop have accomplished. As someone who has fostered several rescue dogs I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping give dogs like these a second chance. A lot of people are afraid of getting rescue dogs because they will have bad habits that are unbreakable. You are showing everyone that this is not the case. Thank you for everything.

I find these training series quite interesting. I am a volunteer at a local dog rescue. Many of the dogs are like Chop and the two dogs in the previous series. I will continue to try to improve my communication with the dogs and helping the dogs become more adoptable. Even small improvements to make the dogs more easily likable by the general adopters is so helpful. I noticed that our rescue gave a link to Zak's training videos and that is how I found him. I am no longer trying to reinvent the wheel.

thankyou for helping dog parents find a kind way to help their reactive dog. We have had our Lucy for 5 years now and its taken every minute of that to get her to a point where I finally have confidence taking her out walking by other dogs. I am sorry Zak, but after a month of continuous training this is terrible progress. My rescue Rottweiler was already parallel walking with other calm dogs and far less reactive than this after a month. He started out more aggressive and reactive than Chop ever was. Loose leash walking on a regular collar - just stopping when he started to pull - and firmly saying no and then rewarding sit when he tried to lunge or bark at other dogs got me far further than this in a shorter time. Unless you live in Alaska or walk your dog at 11pm, you have to confront, train and socialize your dog with other dogs. Avoidance is impossible. Food aggression..now that took longer, being a Rottweiler and all.

It’s really great to see you show an EXTREMELY reactive and sensitive dog. Very similar to our dog. Great to see what a realistic working distance for some dogs can be. Other shows have dogs greeting within minutes but we have been training our dog for years and a greeting with stranger dogs still seems out of the question. Great to see how much management is involved and how much work actually goes into counter conditioning episode by episode.

you can do it! Believe in your dog and trust them. They will let you know which dogs they want to meet and which they would rather not. It's been 2.5 years, but now my reactive dog has neighborhood dog friends. I always try to meet other dogs if their owners are willing. I believe in you and your dog too, you can do it. It's also ok if your dog wants to be alone, as long as they are happy! Best of luck.

The dog gets excited which makes him seem reactive, but really he's just a pup figuring out his boundaries. This is not an aggressive or fear aggressive dog, you'll never see Zak work with one because his methods don't work on tough dogs

    • @nogerboher5266
      @nogerboher5266 2 роки тому +5

I'm sorry but this dog is NOWHERE NEAR extreme levels of reactivity or sensitivity, not even remotely close. Such behavior simply can't be corrected by positive reinforcement methods. Dozen of biologists and dog trainers on UA-cam have already called out Victoria Stillwell, Zak George and a bunch of other extremely popular ''positive reinforcement only'' dog trainers and they did it publicly over all social media platforms. Not a single one of them replied to any one of the dog trainers and biologists who called them out and not a single one of them even had the decency and manners to at least acknowledge that they have been reached out to - except Victoria Stillwell. She was the only one who replied, I think it was over Twitter or something, I could be wrong, anyhow, she said herself that she won't even accept dogs with extreme issues, especially aggression and didn't answer when she was asked why. It's because not a single one of these positive reinforcement dog trainers have ever seen or worked with dogs who are actually aggressive, dogs who have actual, intense fear issues, dogs who have actual, intense reactivity and sensitivity, so on and so forth... Because they know they can't do anything regarding such behavior by using positive reinforcement methods.

We have trained our greyhound to come when called ,lie down on his bed to receive his teeth cleaning stick He understands down to lie down he understands when we want him to go into his crate which he absolutely loves
He stays inside with an open door if we tell him to stay (we have a completely fenced in property )
Many greyhounds can’t sit due to their anatomy Our dog plays fetch for a short while and then gets bored as if to say why do you keep throwing the ball away They are pure magic when running fast
I think the reason they don’t train easily in the classical sense is that they are very independent dogs with their own minds and they consider any instructions with a yeah na which means they will respond appropriately if they feel like it

As I am approved to take a rescue dog from Spain in 2022, I have been watching a variety of dog training videos. I love yours and have ordered your book.
I last had a dog in 2004. He was 17 when he died. I have been waiting to retire to have the time, I had two elderly cats, the last one died 6 months ago.
I am now retired, but I have a very small income. It has taken me 6 months to save up the required amount, and I am awaiting a small second pension to begin in March.
I volunteer at the local rescue and will continue to do this.
You could say I really want this dog. That said, I know what I want, not a big dog like Chop, although he is lovely, so I am still hastening slowly although I can't wait. I feel I owe it to any potential dog to be sure. I have seen several cats and dogs returned to the rescue, and they get so depressed. Thanks Zac. I was an infant teacher and one time Foster parent. Firm kindness is always the way!

This. But most people who see 'I refuse to be an alpha' will think it means you can't correct any behaviour ever at all. A good leader shows you what is expected, but will tell you where you go wrong, too, and then how to change that. That is what Zak has been doing, with small corrections here and there, but certainly no 'alpha roll' or the use of prongs or shock collars.

So I have a question. If a dog is never allowed to experience frustration how is he supposed to learn to work through it in a good manner?
Because we surely agree that there will be a point when he will get frustrated.
With a correction you teach that bad behavior has a negative answer, just as positiv behavior has a good reaction . Every coin has two sides. Thats Nature. Night and day, Cold and warm, Loud and quiet…
The good, loving, understanding training full of empathy, and the correction to teach him that some things are just not acceptable. It’s frustrating for him, but so is a powerful mommy correction to her puppies… they learn better and faster, and that implements a deeper feeling of security in them when they know BOTH boundaries

It's great to see Chop's reactivity really improving. Dogs can be reactive from feeling threatened or insecure, and making harsh corrections will only make them feel more threatened or insecure. Obedience out of fear is not the goal and it's great to see the benefits of positive reinforcement. Also loved the shoes :-)

Tbf Chop does not look insecure at all. He looks mostly frustrated and obviously has no impulse control. Of course this is to be expected from a dog that hasn't been trained. While I don't think corrections would be an issue for Chop they also won't make him "learn" impulse control faster. He mostly needs time and I think Zak is on a good path with him.

We enrolled with a trainer last year in January 2021, when our GSD's fear reactivity was at its worst with unknown dogs and people. We got her at 7 months untrained and with separation anxiety. Her separation anxiety is gone. Initially, the trainer did a purely positive training similar to this way before and it barely improved the fear reactivity with our GSD to people and dogs after training for more than 6 months since January 2021. She had very good dog obedience but she would still bark and lunge at unknown people and dogs. We were stuck at the 3-4 metre threshold for ages. We also do mental and physical exercises daily with her.
We switched to a balanced training approach and after a month, we were able to move forward. She is now 2 yrs old, she can now walk in crowded places around people and dogs. She now plays with doggy friends and now we can have visitors come over in our house. I can talk to someone in front of me without her lunging and barking at them. She can now go out in public and listen to us if she gets distracted.

You really built up the suspense not releasing a video last Sunday. The way the trailer and the other pre-series video were put together, I was honestly thinking he attacked inertia at some point. Now I’m not so sure, and I’m anxious and excited for the next video. I’d say good luck, but you already know how it turned out. Here is an idea for another series, short daily videos in real time with an overview for each day rather than us being months behind reality. Maybe then you could do a series structured like this one that goes into a bit more depth of that dog‘s journey.

I've had rescue dogs since I was a kid, from all different situations and all different personalities. We worked with professional trainers on multiple occasions- all positive training. Its amazing to see how far they come- and how much fun working together can be for both us and our furry friends.

I've been watching your channel for months, and finally have your books on the way. I have learned so much from you! I have an 8 month old Icelandic Sheepdog, a breed very similar to Border Collie. (requires a lot of mental and physical activity, loves all dogs and people so much that she gets overly excited to see them, and HATES to be alone), but with a piercing bark that is a bit hard to live with. I think the biggest challenge I've faced this time compared to previous dogs I've trained as puppies is that I have children now. It changes EVERYTHING. Having others in the home that are constantly reinforcing the behaviors I'm trying to correct is just ridiculous, not to mention how much my time is divided. I think your books are going to become required reading for everyone in the house so that we are finally all on the same page. This video of Chop reminded me a lot of what we were working on today, I had Fagra at the sledding hill with the family, with my pupbox treats, and practiced being calm despite other dogs and so many kids squealing as they flew down the hill.

You know the fun thing with the whole discussion about alpha or no alpha, is people create all stories about what a alpha is.
Alpha is simply a leader, the leadership style what is used by the alpha is personal. Sadly people have the vision a alpha need to be agressive and always having the upperhand.
You lead the dogs with your style and learn them to cope with certain situations. So you are the leader or alpha. You teach and direct them.

@@zakgeorge do we cite scientific studies to find out which combination of martial arts is most effective at beating up another person? No, we have two human beings face off against each with a certain set of rules that make it fair and we see who wins. So I’m thinking more, trainer vs trainer. You get ten dogs that need training, the two trainers get 20 minutes with the dogs and then pick their teams; the five dogs they will train. The criteria for successful training could be negotiated with the ultimate criteria being the best trained dogs in a set amount of time using an agreed upon quality of treat and maybe no shock collars but everything else goes. You could do three simple commands, recall, stay and heel. At the end of the two week training period or however long you wanted it, you would test each dog on their three commands starting with easy level (no distractions) moving to harder (some distractions) moving to difficult (squirrels darting across the grass, sirens ringing out, multiple vacuum cleaners being turned on, strangers in hoodies limping across the dogs path) then you see which dogs are trained better, which ones will obey commands in the face of distractions. How fun would that be!! Forget the studies man! Let’s see which trainers and training method is more effective in the field!!
