You pointed out the director at the 50 yard line. He is on an elevated platform so that he can be seen. There are also two assistants, each at the 30 yard lines, also on elevated platforms. They watch the director and mimic his movements so that the director's cues are more visible to the band. Some US university marching bands have multiple drum majors that do the same thing. On the field, they will place themselves so that a band member can almost always see one of them. Those drum majors watch the director and conduct the same beat so that the band can stay together mire easily.
In 2021, THE Ohio State University bounced around in the Top 5 in the country as it has for many years prior and still does. It ended around #6 if I remember correctly. Most people go to the bathroom and get refreshments during halftime, so the stands aren't always going to be full during a show.
You should react to Jackson State University Marching Band Sonic Boom marching out- The Merge 2022. This is an HBCU (Historically Black College and University).
Ohio State Marching Band is WAY better than Texas A&M band. The aggies size was impressive, but got old quick. Ohio State band kept me on the edge of the seat waiting for what they were going to do next. BRILLIANT --- ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!!
No band can rival Ohio . But I appreciate their attempts, it's keep everyone on their toes.
Ohio State’s marching band rivals Ohio pretty well, but the Marching 110 are very good in their own right.

This is not the Ohio State Marching Band. It is The Ohio State UNIVERSITY Marching Band. Two different schools and bands.
