P3 users had to use evokers because the dark hour is so draining. The midnight channel inversely makes it a bit easier to summon them Akihiko in the arena games stated that he doesn’t need to use an evoker anymore

Wrong. Evoker is an external summoning device, making it possible to use a persona anywhere with no trouble, while the TV world influence has a special atmosphere which makes the summoning possible. That's why P3 characters don't use evokers when they are in the TV world as well. In P1/P2 it was made possible as normal via Philemon's power, who was weakened by the time of P3 and onward.
@@tpuddin Yes, it's even confirmed further in Reload that Takaya doesn't use one because his determination is strong enough, and after the events of P3 Akihiko eventually learns to summon without an evoker too.
Actually, it's persona 2 itself that contradicts trinity soul, since there are more than a character in their 20 that can use persona without problem. And persona 2 too they just summon persona, there's no trauma gun card masks or facing true self, so all of these things were already in persona 2. Still, this anime is good, and without some of these contradictory details could be canon without problem
The reason the characters from Persona 2 have personas is a bit more complicated in nature than the later games. The characters in Persona 1 and 2 were chosen by Philemon directly, whereas in 3 onwards the MCs sign contracts in some way which means they had an option to opt out, instead of the role being forced on them. The other characters in P3 use evokers or similar methods, but it's only possible because of the dark hour, but P4 and P5 the MC gets their ability before any of their other teammates and in P4 the other 2 that are given the ability also shook hands with Izanami and in P5 only Joker and Akechi where given abilities because of Yaldaboath
Joker does not get his personal before Morgana, you as the player only have access to Joker first. However it is made clear that Morgana already had access to their Persona prior to Joker pulling off his mask in rebellion.

Wow we have everything from persona a protagonist moving to a new town to stay with someone for the year, a detective that attempts to suprise you with a persona, a murder mystery, a God to fight at the end
@@Diego35HDWell, neither do any other personas. Persona 3 was the last non-spinoff to actually show characters that would be important in future games. Rise is relegated to a poster in P5.
Does the stage plays and manga count as having a cast of characters without the Wild Card ability? Well, technically, the protags in those still have their Wild Card ability, but they never at any point actually use it and always stick with their starter Persona.
@@TrivatorGaming That's a good point. Still, feels weird that in those, they never actually use their Wild Card ability and still have access to the Velvet Room.
In my opinion this was somewhat a botched result of Atlus not knowing where to go after the huge milestone which Persona 3 was. You can see a mix between P3 social story line and Persona 2 noiresque-like notion. This was probably a mixture a little too much shaken for the player of an IP that just got out of indie and waltzed right into mainstream. (Of course the full process happened after P5 but at that moment Atlus made a breakthrough). Still I liked the show for its dry almost crispy atmosphere. It came to me more as a tribute to P2 rather than P3.
12:35 Persona 1 and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment contradict Trinity Soul's lore as well, with Kandori, a major antagonist in both games, being fully capable of utilizing a Persona despite being in his late twenties (P1) and his early thirties (P2: EP). Same goes for the majority of party members in Eternal Punishment too, with Maya, Ulala, and Katsuya being well into their twenties and Baofu, the oldest of the cast, being 32 years old and yet they all can use their Personas with no problems
Zenkichi in 5 strikers is also another adult user who awakened as an adult, trinity soul is non canon after all hence the liberties they took for their narrative. Edit: obviously strikers is long after trinity soul but it shows that it still remains the case that adults can have personas.
The Nyarlohothep trilogy has Philemon unlock people's access to their personas after being summoned during the Persona game (also the same reason why everyone has access to the Velvet Room, not just the Fool). I believe Philemon & Nyarlohothep agreed to leave humanity alone after EP, but I'm not sure because I haven't played it. Persona 3 onward has had characters limited to 1 Persona each (aside from the Fool), often with complications or limitations, so the nature of acquisition had changed so equating Persona usage with age was not unreasonable for the time. I would dispute that Persona 4's killer necessarily negates this theory since their Persona is granted to them by a divine entity, although Zenkichi Hasegawa from Persona 5 Strikers would, given he awakens to Valjean as an adult.
Here's why I think Shadow Extraction makes one euphoric. The Shadow, according to Carl Yung, is the self, that is understandable to society, you don't want anyone to see. If you let out the shadow, like in counseling or writing it in a journal, it feels good, like you lifted a weight off your chest. That's the sense of euphoria. Yes, the Shadow may be a deviant, I get that! Letting it out where it doesn't harm anyone is the key to balancing the Shadow and the Persona.
I meant to say the shadow is the side that is not respected to society, not understandable. I don't know what I was typing. I'm not editing because I don't wanna lose that heart
This anime try to sell Gloomy theme of Persona 3 but they get it wrong, because what made people love P3 is for its lively story and story telling that made the tragic end more meaningful (like loosing a friend)
Atlas has so much potential for this series outside of 3,4and 5. And even with those numbered titles, there is still so much that we can benefit from. There are lots of books left untranslated. I think the West is ready for Persona. I think there is a massive fan base that just wants more.
I think the reason for Shin not being included in the 25th merch along side the other 7 protagonist is one may think it's because many people hated this and declared it non canon, similar to the changes made for the Persona 3 stage and anime adaptations (With the bit you mentioned about Kanaru, the bit you said "How familiar...", that's only in the Persona 3 stage plays and movies, in the game, Yukari is actually the canon love interest and the game would give big hints about it, even making it a big plot element in The Answer), but in one video I saw, it's actually because Atlus doesn't really own the rights to Trinity Soul surprisingly. Also, one thing I'd like to point out is that recently all the Persona animes were all shown in this one source in this marathon in a Japanese stream service as one of the announcements for the September announcement, even Trinity Soul was featured in there, despite Shin not even being featured at all in any of the 25th anniversary merch. So, that's pretty much the only time Trinity Soul got any sorta attention for the 25th Anniversary of Persona celebration so far. I'm really hoping this would get a reboot where it would feature elements from future Persona games like 4 and 5 while still being more of a Persona 3 sequel as well as fix up a lot of the issues. Also, someone actually told me that Trinity Soul actually introduced a few elements that the Persona 4 Arena games would use.
Notice the 25th anniversary includes *Game* protagonists Trinity soul doesn't have a game sadly so maybe that's another reason as to why it's not included
Incorrect all persona social links are cannon according to Atlus So the Harem route was cannon in persona 3 and that better explain the events in the answer
I know people love pointing out the contradiction of "adults can't summon personas" by talking about Adachi from P4 or the cast of P2: Eternal Punishment... But it's so often ignored what Kanaru says in one of the episodes about that. She says that she doesn't believe that adults actually lose their Persona's when they grow up, but subconsciously suppress because of this need to be "more adult". Not exactly what she says, but do forgive me it's been years since I watched this. Which means it's not that the Adachi or Maya shouldn't be able to summon Persona's... But more of that because of their psyche, mental state, or personality, they are able to summon one. Thing is, we should also look at the context as a whole as to why Trinity Soul even makes mention of this; And while this is slightly meta, it is supposed to explain why most if not almost all Persona users are teenagers. It's not that adults "can't", it's just that teenagers are more predisposed to have one. Teenage life is often some of the most hectic years when it comes to finding oneself. And a lot of teenagers focus on that and I think that is why they're more predisposed to have one. And that's why adults, kids, dogs, or even shadows being able to summon personas is an exceptional thing where it has a lot to do with either circumstance (like a traumatic event), or mentality.
Additionally I like to think the reason Akihiko can't summon his Persona anymore is because in Trinity Soul he seems much more calm and collected; Which makes me want to think that he's been able to more or less move past his traumas, doesn't feel the need to overcompensate with his brawn anymore, and is in a stable moment in his life. And since he's a cop now, has also subconsciously fallen into putting up a more "society-approved" outward Persona. Aaaaaaand maybe that's why Akihiko seems "not like himself" or "boring" in TS. He's just grown up. And sometimes being grown up is boring and mundane. Losing your Persona doesn't always have to be a thing imo. Might just mean you don't need it anymore.
The "adults" needing to take drugs to keep using their Persona's feel like a rather heavy handed way of representing needing medication for mental illness due to trauma that as an adult they still haven't been able to move past. Not sure how I feel about that but just what I think it might mean based on other points made in the video and heavy handed metaphors.
@@kjbionicle Frustrating how person fans do not care about anything except action. It's like they don't know what "Persona" is about at all. I blame persona 4 and 5.
The fact that you cannot be an adult to use a persona or you die is mentioned in this anime and nowhere else in the Persona series really tells you that the creators behind the Persona game series did not like that concept. I think it is a dumb concept. So, you're telling me that when all the characters from Persona 1 to 5 grow up that they violently die if they try using their persona? That's a bit too gruesome. Also, if I remember correctly, some were already adults (or can be considered young adults).
I want to thank you for making this video. I'm making a dnd campaign of persona for my friends that haven't played the game. This gave me ideas for it.
Shin’s design might actually come from a scrapped P3 protagonist concept; if you look at the early footage from when it was going to have an isometric perspective, the protagonist design looks a lot like Shin.
Persona 1 and 2 had them summon via normal means and not a special way in fact no one needs to do that, they just do it for concentration. Also, P2 is the one that rejects this shows canon because Maya was 20. Also also, P1 and P2 don’t entirely have characters progression tied to the Mc being around
i wanna point out that before persona 4 atlus had a very different way of having you see the world and the mechanics of personas and i'm actually really sad it didn't stay like this. Both persona 3 and trinity soul have the characters taking drugs to keep their personas in check with only your group in persona 3 being any different. it paints having a persona as a massive burden and undertaking unlike having a pokemon or having a stand. when you think of having Star Platinum you think of being this action movie hero who punches shit till it dies with magical powers. if persona had kept going like this having a persona would almost always mean sacrificing so much of yourself and putting yourself through so much pain to use that no one would ever really want one. i kinda wish atlus kept it like that. now having a persona is just WOAH CHECK OUT THIS SUPER RAD POWER and not a topic that should be taken seriously like how most mega ten games handle things.
One thing to note is not just persona 4 but the cast of persona 2 eternal punishment (which was before persona 3) the entire cast were adult persona users so the whole not having a persona at adulthood made zero sense
"As you get older, it gets harder to summon your Personas" Adachi, Maruki, Zenkichi, Toshiro, Katsuya, Kandori and Baofu would like to have a word with you.
I came to this video after having just finished Episode Aigis from Persona 3 Reload, wondering if Trinity Soul had any plot implications towards the story of P3. But as it turns out that is not the case at all and I didn't miss much.
I think I knew of the anime when it came out, but the whole semi-transparent Persona thing was a big turn off and I never finished it. I will say though, of all the interactions with Igor in the anime, mange and games, that brief interaction in Ep1 was perfection. I think it might even be my favorite scene of the whole anime, it's so mysterious, eerie and perfect for his character. I don't think I'll ever give a second chance to this anime, but it was definitely worth the watch to check out this little essay.
Nice video man, just what i was waiting for. Good analysis to this anime. This is one of my favorites, isn't really good, right, but i like the serious and mystery atmosphere.
Which studio animated this again? I read in passing on old gamefaqs threads that the animation studio who did this also made the anime scenes for Persona 4 PS2.
@@Mageman17 It's not the amount of animators who worked on a series, it depends on the priority given within the season lineup. That's what determines where the animation is done. Nowadays, an anime's animation quality depends on whether it was drawn directly in-studio or outsourced to a sister branch of said studio (be it in Japan or overseas). For example, Sailor Moon Crystal S1-2 animation was outsourced to the Philippines, hence why the animation takes real sharp nosedives at times. Why do that for one of Toei's most iconic series? It's cost effective. They preferred to cut corners just to not spend much money. And now you know why P5A looks like sh*t at times.
I watched this first few episodes a very long time ago and assumed it was Persona 1. When I later experienced Persona 1, I just assumed I had a fever dream haha

Im goanna be that asshole. Technically, even before P4 was released, Trinity Soul makes no sense with adults with persona. The cast of P2 part 2 (and two members of part 1) are all adults. So trinity contradicts the real lore of the series by ignoring the past titles.
You're not an asshole. I haven't play p2 or p2.5 yet because I was told 2. 5 doesn't have a full English patch yet. And I kinda assumed they were teens. I'll read up on it now. Hope you stick around for more content in the future!

@21:46 sparked a memory So during my first watch of Kamen Rider Blade, there's an entire arc with Garren that's a giant anti-drugs message: It's basically "Don't do drugs, you'll isolate yourself from your friends and family and become dependant, and your Dollar Store M.Bison drug dealer will kill your girlfriend if you try to kick the habit." (Kamen Rider W's almost-entire schtick counts too, a lot of the early Dopants are basically addicts strung out on the effects of using Memory direct into their body to escape the issues in their lives) There's something about the early 00's public morals messaging in Japan that's just so unwieldy that it's almost comical.
But adachi first fuses with his shadow or something also he uses it in the TV world so it makes sense why adachi has a persona and I guess the same goes for zenkichi because hes in the metaverse
Back in 2010, when I really got into persona 3 FES. I didn't have internet at the time. I've seen the picture with Shin, and I had no idea who that was until today!
the lazy copout answer is because the concept of a multiverse applies to Persona too (being very important to a good chunk of Q2, as well as why the Persona series even exists in the first place, much less exist past Innocent Sin), there probably are timelines where Trinity Soul happened
I didn’t know much about Persona, but for some reason I realy resonated by the chill wibes while feeling a bit ackward at the same time. For some reason the snow, cooking and some of the music stuck with me. Not the most profound show I have ever watched but I atached to it somehow.
I feel like if this was a game, it would have been done better because anime usually has time constraints that they need to meet, and there's only so much you can include in an anime, if it's not a long running series.
I remember this anime from back in college. I got halfway through it but never finished it lol. I was hoping there would've been a crossover 5 and Trinity soul.
It better work in tangent with p3 and p5/p5s then. Akihiko also needs to be useful and able to use his persona plus they should actually bring back previous game casts.
Maybe the existence of Adachi doesnt contradict TS. I mean *spoilers* he did get his powers directly from a god rather that having the potential like in 3. My theory would be that getting your persona that way instead of awakening to it transends normal rules.
It's been a WHILE since I watched the anime so I may be be forgetting it, but you not mentioning it in the video also makes me think it wasn't really a thing in the anime. But Personas and Shadows are deeply routed in Psychology and what have you (As I'm sure most people know) But the idea of a piece of Persona fiction that doesn't involve that or acknowledge it feels like someone saw the cliffnotes of Persona 3 and just went "Oh okay, they are kinda like personal pokemon, got it." Missing the whole point of that they meant and what shadows and ego mean nether, which is something that is a through line throughout the whole series (With Persona 3 Journey arguably being the one with the weakest ties to this.) I get why the show was made non-canon not due to the plot or characters or anything like that, it's mainly because it feels like it missed one of the main theme of what the persona games have in common, being the relationship between Personas and Shadows and the effect that can have on a person and the people around them along with the collective unconscious. All that being said, great video~
Persona Trinity soul, I think takes place 10 years in the future. We’re a bunch of teenagers have their bodies ripped inside out by having their persona stolen by your serial killer that’s what I remember??? And a funny thing is this anime got me started on persona in the first place cause I never heard of it until I saw this anime . Then I saw UA-cam video, about persona 3 let’s play, which is how I got introduced to the entire series.
never thought id get to share a trinity soul fun fact in my life but hey around 28:40 you mention that a whale's feather really should've been read and explained to the audience. aniplex and nis america clearly agreed, because the volume 1 premium edition dvd box set comes with a hardcover copy of the in-universe children's book - "written by shigeru kanzato and illustrated by haruka kanzato" its not very good! but the art is very appealing. fitting!
I have a fantasy where if Persona 6 be a thing which will eventually become a thing they're going to use almost like the same character models they use for this one
As someone who loves the Persona series and most of the adjacent series like Digital Devil Saga and the Raidou Kuzonoha games, I always found Trinity Soul to be an aggressively mid side story that was non-canon. Even revisiting it after years later it's still pretty mid, but I can see what they were trying to do.
I greatly respect that you didn't self-censor like so many people on this terrible platform do. Also, protein is a major part of Akihiko's character only in later games, so it makes sense that an anime made only a year after it wouldn't mention it. After all, it was only mentioned once in the game, and only as part of a missable sidequest.
12:38 I don't really think retcon is the righr term for that, since each game have slightly different changes in rules and all that. The use of pills to interfer with the persona seems to be vaguely based on surpressants pilla in p3
the concept for this show is pretty cool. it would've been such a good story for another game. like imagine a Persona User antagonist who, instead of being a wild card, they steal other people's persona's :0 i think that'd be sick :P also couldn't the reason Adachi can use a persona be because they are in the TV world? they're in the real world in Trinity soul, so maybe that's why they have to use the drugs? idk

Especially since fundamentally, their Personas were formed from rebellion or whatever so it might not even work at all
Although yes, Evokers can be used whenever and I'm surprised more people don't know that.

Makes me wish there was more anime original Persona enteries starring non-wildcards
Heck I'm even surprised no UA-camr has tried to make an Abridged parody of the series, it would really help reintroduce people to it.
Does the stage plays and manga count as having a cast of characters without the Wild Card ability? Well, technically, the protags in those still have their Wild Card ability, but they never at any point actually use it and always stick with their starter Persona.
@@spydersoup8447 I don't really count those because they still have access to the Velvet Room
@@TrivatorGaming That's a good point. Still, feels weird that in those, they never actually use their Wild Card ability and still have access to the Velvet Room.
It’s not an Anime but Persona 1 and Person 2’s duology doesn’t use the wild card trope
Atlus doesn't own Trinity Soul
@@shelbybayer200 I honestly didn’t know that. Thank you for your response. Well, that explains a lot.
Yuki, Nanjo and Elly are also adults
These modern Persona fans man..
@Eduardo-ll7eg also, there's an adult in P5 Tactica that has a Persona.

Also, to correct you on something, the two art you showed with Shin, those are promo art for Persona concerts from 2009 to 2011.
Notice the 25th anniversary includes *Game* protagonists

2:08 igor being some random guy on the street is hilarious
The fact that you cannot be an adult to use a persona or you die is mentioned in this anime and nowhere else in the Persona series really tells you that the creators behind the Persona game series did not like that concept.
I think it is a dumb concept. So, you're telling me that when all the characters from Persona 1 to 5 grow up that they violently die if they try using their persona? That's a bit too gruesome. Also, if I remember correctly, some were already adults (or can be considered young adults).
Kek I can see Akihiko trying to summon his and he suddenly violently blows up.
Actually water does expire, or more accurately the bottle its in expires, causing the water to leach in chemicals from it contaminating it.
Every character in this anime looks like an OC.
I was sold first ten seconds pls continue to make such high quality SMT content so I don't have to thanks~

Your intro made me laugh so much i suscribed inmediately
I think I knew of the anime when it came out, but the whole semi-transparent Persona thing was a big turn off and I never finished it. I will say though, of all the interactions with Igor in the anime, mange and games, that brief interaction in Ep1 was perfection. I think it might even be my favorite scene of the whole anime, it's so mysterious, eerie and perfect for his character. I don't think I'll ever give a second chance to this anime, but it was definitely worth the watch to check out this little essay.

Which studio animated this again? I read in passing on old gamefaqs threads that the animation studio who did this also made the anime scenes for Persona 4 PS2.
It's was A1 Pictures if I'm not mistaken.
@@Onichanel. thanks for the response. They didn't do too bad with the animation here. Did a talent exodus happen at some point?

The cast of P2 part 2 (and two members of part 1) are all adults.
So trinity contradicts the real lore of the series by ignoring the past titles.

So during my first watch of Kamen Rider Blade, there's an entire arc with Garren that's a giant anti-drugs message:
It's basically "Don't do drugs, you'll isolate yourself from your friends and family and become dependant, and your Dollar Store M.Bison drug dealer will kill your girlfriend if you try to kick the habit."
(Kamen Rider W's almost-entire schtick counts too, a lot of the early Dopants are basically addicts strung out on the effects of using Memory direct into their body to escape the issues in their lives)
There's something about the early 00's public morals messaging in Japan that's just so unwieldy that it's almost comical.
I know Trinity Soul got decanonized around the time of Persona 4 Arena

Meaning the original story but edited to be more in line with the games
It better work in tangent with p3 and p5/p5s then. Akihiko also needs to be useful and able to use his persona plus they should actually bring back previous game casts.
Maybe the existence of Adachi doesnt contradict TS. I mean *spoilers* he did get his powers directly from a god rather that having the potential like in 3. My theory would be that getting your persona that way instead of awakening to it transends normal rules.
When I saw the personas were transparent I immediately thought of the Jojo OVA.
Thou hath awakened something within the sea of my souls...dang I forgot this existed.
It's been a WHILE since I watched the anime so I may be be forgetting it, but you not mentioning it in the video also makes me think it wasn't really a thing in the anime.
But Personas and Shadows are deeply routed in Psychology and what have you (As I'm sure most people know)
But the idea of a piece of Persona fiction that doesn't involve that or acknowledge it feels like someone saw the cliffnotes of Persona 3 and just went "Oh okay, they are kinda like personal pokemon, got it." Missing the whole point of that they meant and what shadows and ego mean nether, which is something that is a through line throughout the whole series (With Persona 3 Journey arguably being the one with the weakest ties to this.)
I get why the show was made non-canon not due to the plot or characters or anything like that, it's mainly because it feels like it missed one of the main theme of what the persona games have in common, being the relationship between Personas and Shadows and the effect that can have on a person and the people around them along with the collective unconscious.
All that being said, great video~
Really like this was feeling the surprise of use some more music

its not very good! but the art is very appealing. fitting!
I've known this back in the same year it was released.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Atlus just casually drops Trinity Soul as a game
