I recorded this on VHS when I was a kid. I loved the sounds Keith was getting out of his telecaster. I wore the tape out and never forgot about this episode. Thanks very much for posting this!
Thanks for putting this out for all of us to see . Keith at his best, elegantly wasted !! Paul is no slouch either. He's a legend in as a session player. The man is highly respected in the music industry. He can play anything at anytime , both Keith n Paul are legends in there own unique ways...great video.
Paul can get any sound he wants and chime in with any legend seamlessly. He’s also one of the few super nice guys that gets the respect of all the bad asses because he’s just that knowledgeable and intelligent and uninhibited without a hint of pretense. In other words yes nerdy Paul Schaffer is cool.
Keith looks and sounds healthy here. Hell of guitar player. My favorite Stones records are the Mick Taylor years. Mick plays pretty standard rock licks on a Les Paul while Keith moves around him on his Tele. Some of my favorite solos are Mick's too.
This was when he was having his daughters with Patti Hansen and he and Mick were at each others throat. I think he was doing the Chuck Berry bio pick at this time as well, so it was a period of time he was more visible than he had been in years
Sounds to me like Paul Shaffer was trying to interpret Keef's British speaking for the American audience. By repeating what Keef was saying but in an American way. Obviously T.v. was a lot different in those days. Lot to do with the over exposure today's artists are getting. It was so cool when you knew your favorite rock star was going to be on a t.v. so cool that a lot of us kids would stay over another friends house so you could enjoy the appearance with your best friends. Now any kid can catch the latest rockstar experience at their fingertips. Nothing for today's youth to share with each other on a different level like said above.
My opinion too. Somehow he always seems to get the music director job during the hall of fame, which is a joke in itself, blowouts. All I see is him jumping around try to get some attention from the real stars who in turn hardly even notice him. Never like him or especially the giggling idiot Dave.
+Bob Sewvello thirtierth anniversary, already! Miss you Keef...( when I remember the main offender's resurrection, my eyes are full of as tears go by).
Dan Michaels I don't think Shaffer tries to compare himself to Richards. Paul is technically proficient, and is a good musical director. From all accounts, he's a nice guy. Richards plays by touch and feel, and needs no evaluation of talent by me. I'm a huge fan.
totally different musicians, keith is the riffmaster, extremly creative ,driven ,and knows were to steal from, but adds his touch, and his lyrics are ,well they speak for themselves,Shaffer is a very talented musician and can play anything ,anytime ,anywhere,he also knows how to lead a band ,which is no small feat, theres a reason he is a musical director in New York City and for David Letternan
At least Keith admits that he has ripped himself off. The riff from Rocks Off is the same as Before They Make Me Run among other Stones song that sound the same.. However Brian Jones came up with the riff on The Last Time, not Keith. and Jones had a lot to do with all the other early stones hits espically Ruby Tuesday and Paint it Black but he and was never given any writing credit so he quit in 1969 and died the same year. Too bad. I'm glad the 3 remaining Stones are still out there at 75 years old but I did not want to pay 300 bucks to see them last time they were in town.
That ESP Tele sounds like shit! Keith sounds much better with a Fender Telecaster. ESP must have paid him big bucks during this time for the endorsement.
I'm baffled. How can people accept this guy as Keith Richards? This is clearly not the same person that played Keith Richards pre-1979. Has the world gone bonkers? I wouldn't even call this guy a look-alike replacement. He looks nothing like the Keith Richards from the 70's.
Not one of these PaulIsDead bullshit stories again. Point 1. People get older, so their appearance changes Point 2. He quit heroin, and looks healthier, still wasted but healthy, Point 3. It was the eighties. Everybody changed their style.
Late 80s Keith is probably my favourite version, got all the wisdom and also the chops and still the coolest guy ever
Richard in early age had a great voice…
I recorded this on VHS when I was a kid. I loved the sounds Keith was getting out of his telecaster. I wore the tape out and never forgot about this episode. Thanks very much for posting this!
Every time I see him playing music, Paul Shaffer always looks like he's having the time of his life!
Keith is a good guy and it shows in this gem of a video
One of the best interviews he talks about the songs he wrote
It is very nice to see this show again. I greatly remembered first watching this episode back on June 20, 1986.
When Keith was still Keith. great upload
Paul Schaffer is a genius. An amazing musician and the best talk show sidekick ever.
Wayne T .....indeed! A genius! ✌️🇨🇦
He ain't a genius, just a session piano player who got lucky and bobs his head alot. Name me one Paul Schaffer album/song he wrote?
Fantastic find! Keith is the coolest cat in rock'n'roll, full-stop.
Back when TV and Music still had substance
This is a real gem. Thanks for posting.

Keith always seems like nothing bothers him, i sometimes wish i was like that because i stress and ruminate on things from the past that i did wrong
It’d be pretty hard to be worried abt anything when u wrote all the stones tunes and r literally the coolest person of all time
@@judewessel5713 I still would
Good to see Bass player, Marcus Miller, playing along with Keith and Paul. :-)
THIS IS PRICELESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lovely lost times ..
Paul can get any sound he wants and chime in with any legend seamlessly. Paul S. is an undefeated force in music
classic,thanks for this.
my fav keefer phase is mid 80s an on point...the Stones and Keith second half starts here
Keef being Keef. Class.
Beyond
Thank you Tatas!
I love how Karate Kid is just coming out during this show.
Part II.
This is great footage, awesome upload
Smile smile
Back when tv was casually brilliant.
They were all pretty buzzed but Paul was feeling it a little more.
To the guy on youtube teaching stones songs - you've just been replaced
plus Marcus Miller!! what a combo
Satisfaction dream
It was interesting how both Paul and Keith vocalized the Satisfaction riff in the wrong key. They started it in F# instead of B.
Happy 70th Keef
Keith looks and sounds healthy here. Hell of guitar player. My favorite Stones records are the Mick Taylor years. Mick plays pretty standard rock licks on a Les Paul while Keith moves around him on his Tele.
Some of my favorite solos are Mick's too.
Keith looks good but I'd bet the farm he is high
You can tell by the raspy voice and the constant scratching, he's loaded for sure.
Thomas Sabino it would be more sarcastic if u said "fuk keef looks straight"
This was when he was having his daughters with Patti Hansen and he and Mick were at each others throat. I think he was doing the Chuck Berry bio pick at this time as well, so it was a period of time he was more visible than he had been in years
i believe i bought dirty work in may or april of 86-the week it came out....
I did too, it was the first Stones album I got as a "new release".
have a copy signed by Charlie Watts on Ebay if you're interested.
@@RollingOrmond I got Ronnie Wood to sign mine at book signing!
All in
I love Keith's Tele tone. His stories though ... They're always slightly different in the detail.
The man is very good at creating his own mythology :-) Never one to let the truth get in the way of a good yarn.
lol PS asked Keith about it and he said, "uhhh it goes like this." wonderful insight from the rolling stones
Intro voice the late Scott (self proclaimed 5th Beetle) Muni.
DJ from WNEW FM another lifetime ago.
It's funny that Little Richard thinks "England" has three syllables and Keith thinks that "Diddley" has three syllables. :)
I always wanted to watch "Friday Night Videos" but by the time I was a teenager in the nineties the show got cancelled.
Memphis
You dream it

What is a "Fendert"...?
Is that Willie Weeks on bass?
Actually Keith came up with the riff to Satisfaction in a hotel in Florida, not the London Hilton. That's drugs for ya.
***** Yeah, a lot of that was copied from the Victor Bockris biography.
Clearwater
yeah but he was also remembering back 20 years
When i first heard the story 50 yrs ago keith said it was a motel room in Albuquerque new mexico, so who really knows
Chuck
I would very much love 2 have Brunch w/Keith, I'm 50 baby, I've live life w you up 2 now
I don't understand what makes Shaffer "famous" other than combining enormous insecurity with enormous ego. I guess there is hope for everybody.
He had the greatest late-night band on tv. Have some respect.
My opinion too. Somehow he always seems to get the music director job during the hall of fame, which is a joke in itself, blowouts. All I see is him jumping around try to get some attention from the real stars who in turn hardly even notice him. Never like him or especially the giggling idiot Dave.
Cool meets Uncool.
On the left, is it one of the Muppets ? Lol
Keith Richards RIP
Bob Sewvello Luckily it was a hoax...Keith is still alive!
+Bob Sewvello thirtierth anniversary, already! Miss you Keef...( when I remember the main offender's resurrection, my eyes are full of as tears go by).
Bob Sewvello FUCK you
Bob Sewvello bet he outlives u
He'll outlive all of us .... if he all he's done hasn't killed him yet, nothing will
Esp. Ronnie wood telecaster...
うーん、やっぱりキースのカッティングはすごいんですね。
Slight difference in talent here. Shaffer and Richards compare like Pee Wee Herman and Lenny Bruce.
Dan Michaels I don't think Shaffer tries to compare himself to Richards. Paul is technically proficient, and is a good musical director. From all accounts, he's a nice guy. Richards plays by touch and feel, and needs no evaluation of talent by me. I'm a huge fan.
I was only joking. I never liked Shaffer but he did all right for himself as you said.
Dan Michaels Musically, or as a sidekick? He did tend to sound whiny, no doubt, but I guess his job was to echo Dave and say the odd witty thing.
I totally disagree,Shaffer is one of the BEST studio musicians,of course he's no Keith but he's no slouch either
totally different musicians, keith is the riffmaster, extremly creative ,driven ,and knows were to steal from, but adds his touch, and his lyrics are ,well they speak for themselves,Shaffer is a very talented musician and can play anything ,anytime ,anywhere,he also knows how to lead a band ,which is no small feat, theres a reason he is a musical director in New York City and for David Letternan
So a lounge lizard interviews a legend? :)
That's not a fair characterization of Paul. C'mon now!
It's his style. He's a good musician. But he's tacky. Just my take.
Lounge lizard? You're flat out wrong. Shaffer is one of the best in the business and has played with all the greats for a reason.
Show me ONE time where he's not doing that velvet lounge version of a song? I really would like to believe
boy u dead wrong on that one, calling shaffer a lounge lizard, would be like saying, micheal jordan is a roof shingler
At least Keith admits that he has ripped himself off. The riff from Rocks Off is the same as Before They Make Me Run among other Stones song that sound the same.. That ESP Tele sounds like shit! Keith sounds much better with a Fender Telecaster. ESP must have paid him big bucks during this time for the endorsement.
Xcorgi I think it's bc Ronnie Wood has a ESP signature, that's probably what Keith has here
No, it's just Keith Richards. He kinda sucks kiddies
Paul Shafer knows the bass line of 19th nervous breakdown was Brian Jones the only white guy who could do bo Diddley. I'm not kidding.
I'm baffled. How can people accept this guy as Keith Richards? This is clearly not the same person that played Keith Richards pre-1979. Has the world gone bonkers? I wouldn't even call this guy a look-alike replacement. He looks nothing like the Keith Richards from the 70's.
+dmh497 Hmmmm.... I'm baffled that you think that's not Keef.
+dmh497 Was off heroin by then, face looked slightly healthier than the '70s.
blink...it is keith, trust me. it has been said he has a million faces. i have met him recently and he is a swell guy
Not one of these PaulIsDead bullshit stories again.

rubbish, first bit anyway
