More dinghy cruising at next year’s show please!!! There wasn’t enough this year and the interest in Roger’s talk was just amazing.........best attended by far of the talks I saw (I was there both days). Thanks for a great show though!
I enjoy Rogers cruising. I have sailed many size of boat in my life and I am going back to dingy cruising. I am currently searching for a dingy in Florida. There are many boats here but sailing is not that popular. Everyone it tearing around at high speed. the open boat appeals to me as the small enclosure of a sail boat is like an oven.Currently there is one wayfarer for sale in the whole country.
I don't find big white yachts depressing: I find the sight of that many parked big white yachts depressing! I'd rather have a dinghy I can afford to sail (both timewise and money wise!)
I love Roger's channel and his vids, though few and far between are excellent. I bought his book and am reading it for the second time at the moment.
I wish I could of been at that show, I like how the people in charge their were very kind and recieving of you there. I never knew you were a part of or had your own dinghy cruising association! Very Kool, maybe someday I can sail there...
Interesting, I am always amazed at the tidal range you all are dealing with in the UK. It adds a challenge to the passage and a respect for the power of nature that we do not see where I sail.

ooo, that looks great. I live by the sea and just started to learn to sail on a RYA course (at 62 years old) and most of the folk learning with me want to race things. But I've been climbing and sea swimming and mountain bothying for most of my life, so something like this appeals quiet a bit more. Thanks :-)

Great job Roger! You look far more at home in your dingy than on a stage watching the clock! In the US we have a couple of dingy rallies, and more people are camping using their dingies, but it is a wonderful thing to do that incorporates every aspect of seamanship and gives a great sense of accomplishment when you know you got where you wanted to go using only the forces of nature. And, sometimes you have a great time not getting where you thought you were going!

Very Good, i enjoyed all of that Roger, Great Stuff, i wish i knew as much about dinghy sailing as you.
I am from new zealand. My personal favorite is the 16' Hartley trailer sailor. These very stable and fast vessels have a cabin. The hull is twin chined with a similar appearance to the wayfarer. Wow have I had some adventures. For six months I ranged between whangamata on the coromandel coast and rite up to north cape. This included many offshore islands such as great barrier island.

Loved the video. I'm 72 years old and live in North East England. I would love a yacht but my wife is adamant I can't have one. Expence, I've never thought of dinghy cruising. What would be an average length of a cruising dinghy, and is it expensive to start.

If you're an experienced dinghy sailor there's nothing wrong with a wayfarer. Starting prices about £500😢 and up but will probably need some work.
My best personal favorite is a "laser 16 cruising". Safe and stable 16 ft cruising dinghy. Starting about £1,500.
If not experienced a boat like Roger has everything... But not that boat because of the cost and maintenance.
You can get a cat rigged open fibre glass boat with a lug sail starting at around £600 -£700.
A small outboard..2.5 HP long shaft is more then adequate...and will set back, second hand,, less than £350.
I've never been into sailing, always looks too complicated and all that "tipped over with your bum hanging out" type of thing but this cruising dinghy lark looks just the thing for me. I need to investigate further...
Complicated..? Every sport/hobby requires practice
I think you probably need a wider variety of skills than the average dinghy sailor to be able to do what this guy does, a point which he does make in the presentation.

Their are a lot of free public hard's for launching but most their is a small charge. Finding somehwere to keep the car & trailer over night can be a challenge though.
Notice that nearly everybody going for a very small boat - particularly inflatables - are choosing a kayak instead of a nice wide, stable, comfortable, dry, versatile row boat. Because the kayak is FASTER. Lame.
A small inflatable boat that you can carry in a backpack is a good way to get into dinghy cruising before buying a solid boat, and you can get a pop up spinnaker sail to do a bit of sailing with it too.

Long oars.........or sweeps?
Pfft "proper technique". I find rowing forwards in an inflatable boat is very easy and natural, like walking with your feet stepping out in front of you and seeing where you are going at all times (AVOIDING FLOATING DEBRIS). You can do it while sitting, kneeling or even lying down inside the boat - which is very useful if you are rowing directly into the wind, it makes it a lot easier!
