    Ive got a polo 6r gti, and Im on 100000km and havent had much problems with mine at all. The only issue I had was one of my cooling fans motor that was burnt out. Otherwise I had no other issues. As for the oil usage, I cant say I’ve had that problem. I’ve got a stage 2 setup on the car and it seems to be running fine. I even put it in drag strip a few times and had no issues. I would say mines held up pretty well overs the years. I love it.

      That's great news, sounds like you have a "Friday car", she's a keeper! Our findings were that these are the most common issues that have been experienced by many owners. It's quite possible to own any car and not experience any of the common faults, our aim is always to educate so that if you do buy one these Polo's that you are aware of the possible issues that you could experience.

      @@bayandamokoena4882 Hey man, like @Wheel Index said it could just be that my car is a Friday car. Its a 2014 model so it does come with the revised CTHE motor, rather than the CAV. And it feels special.. runs stronger than the others. Think its the larger turbo(K03S) that came on the revised 6R GTI, Plus the car always had dsg software, which 100% has saved my gearbox. I would say that my stage 2 setup has outlasted stock mapped cars. How has your experience been?

    • @bayandamokoena4882
      @bayandamokoena4882 Рік тому

      I actually don't own one😅 I'm a big fan I love the sound of the exhaust but so many people have complained about the gearbox, I was thinking of a 6c gti instead

    • @miguelbertoni4601
      @miguelbertoni4601 Рік тому

      @@bayandamokoena4882 The 6c has the exact same gearbox and therefore also have problems with the gearbox, unless you go for a manual one. But if these cars are looked after, they dont give much problems.
      As simple as allowing the engine/oil to get up to temperature before driving it hard, can go a long way. And gearbox software is a must, standard is no good.

    I had one from new. (2014 model) Timing chain went at 32 000 km (the timing chain does not break but the fail point is the hydraulic chain tensioner), fortunately no major engine damage & dealership replaced the timing chain under "goodwill clause". DSG clutch shudder started at 43000 km and DSG failed at 46000 km (metatronics failure and a worn dual mass flywheel) Car was out of warranty (time wise) but I fought VW SA, eventually VW Germany replaced the entire DSG at no cost to me, but all this took 4 months. Had it back one month and traded it back to VW and got the new POLO GTI 2.0L. I later heard that the 1.4L GTi suffered a cracked water pump housing 3 months after I had traded it in. Stay away from this particular model. Timing chain replacement without dealer goodwill costs R17 500 and a new DSG is R90 000. That engine while technically is impressive is a total lemon.
    While some people are lucky and dont have issues, all the above are well documented issues and you can find references to them all over the internet. In some countries they actually did a recall on GTi and the Tiguan (cause used the same engine) due to the same issues. However they did not do a recall in SA and only repaired "if" the owner was prepared to kick up a big stink. I was lucky since mine was from new and had low km when the issues happened so i had a strong leg to stand on. Second hand buyers be very very careful of this car, it will make you cry tears of blood when something breaks.
    You have been warned by somebody with first hand experience with this car.

      thank you for this detailed and honest feedback from someone with first hand experience in SA, this will help other potential new owners realise that these issues are real and not smoke and mirrors.

    I’ve found with all Volkswagen’s buying the car is only a down payment you spend almost the purchase price on repairs bought a VW for a quality car and reliable transportation however once you fix the issues they are quite reliable with regular maintenance I have a 6R GTI 1.4 GTI has excessive oil consumption like you say I’ve replaced the water pump at great expense at 70000kms blows smoke under acceleration but turbo seems fine also the radiator was replaced at 60000kms as the cooling fan shroud punctured a hole in it due to a failed rubber grommet so over time with the constant plastics banging together all coolant was lost,
    It’s is however a fun car to drive I’m thinking of getting rid of it when the lease is up the car doesn’t quite have 80000kms yet my caddy van also has had issues once fixed it is now reliable with regular maintenance and is now 15 years old still going strong I don’t think my Polo will last that long,

      Get rid of it as soon as possible, i had mine serviced with the agents, 2nd day of owning it 3 piston ring landings came off. The last i've experienced is the ring landing came off the one VW didn't replace, VW now quoted me R17k to open it and to tell me that last piston is stuffed. I've seriously lost all faith in VW as a brand, prices are getting steeper and quality's just shit.

    Recently bought a 2015 POLO 1.8TSI GTI DSG, drove the car home from the dealership & the EPC light came on, took the car back to the dealership to be repaired & the dealership said they fixed the following
    - 4x Pencil Coils
    - Repaired the engine harness & ECU
    - 1x Cam Sensor
    So my question is, is the car worth keeping after these repairs have been done?

      @wheelindex8983  4 роки тому

      It's concerning that they sold you a car with so many existing mechanical issues, we also doubt that they were not aware of these at the time of sale. We suggest taking the car to a VW dealership and have them a run full diagnostic check on the car and provide you with the printed report. This report should indicate any issues that can be detected by the VW diagnostic equipment, you will need to pay for this report out of your pocket. If more issues are found on this report you can present this to the dealer who sold you the car and requests them to fix the car. Many used car dealers have their own mechanics who fix their sale cars and they likely do not have dealership level diagnostic equipment that pickup all issues stored on the ECU, best to get this done at VW. You can also have VW do a multipoint inspection on the car to identify any mechanical issues, you should also validate the service history. Lots of PT after buying a used car! If you want to cancel the deal --> www.wheelindex.co.za/blog/can-i-cancel-a-car-deal-after-signing-the-finance-and-other-paperwork?id=5s4efT6dzyqKMOkUoiQmoG

      I took the car to VW to have a diagnostic test done as well as a 80 point check, I took the results to the dealership & they said they’d look into it.
      I took the car to the dealership about 8 times now to be repaired but to no avail, I laid a formal complaint with the dealership that after so many attempts I do not want the vehicle anymore & their response was that they have fixed the aforementioned problems & that the car is ready for collection.
      So I’m thinking of lodging a complaint with the MIOSA.
      I have yet to respond to the dealership’s email as well.

      No run away from the deal, according to CPA you have every right to cancel the deal. Like i told someone earlier the dealer closes the sale and then you sit with a repetition of these issues, also they are costly issues.

    2014 models don’t have much issues. But water pump issue is actually still a problem. I would say for it to not give you problems use supreme fuel instead of normal fuel. They say if you use supreme the less you visit the garage. I’m thinking to swap engine and put 1.8 instead. Or 2.0 rs3 engine as a project. 🇬🇧

    • @wheelindex8983
      @wheelindex8983  4 роки тому +2

      In South Africa we have 95 and 93 RON at the gas/petrol station, thus "premium" fuel is non-existent. Unless of course you make your own mixture and run a custom ECU file, but this is not sustainable on a daily driven car. The easiest way to up the octane in SA is to add a water-methanol injection kit, this will require a software tune though and the pros are that the engine temps will run cooler and there will be a slight increase in fuel octane. Do you own a VW Polo 6R gti? Tell us more.

    • @muzyy8978
      @muzyy8978 4 роки тому +1

      Wheel Index yes I do own a 6R version and it hasn’t been a problem. Stage 2 1.4 litre engine runs well with 97 octane and above fuel. I noticed when I used normal fuel I would visit the garage quiet often. Now she’s been running for smooth no oil loss and all. This fuel cleans up your engine and your oil will get dirty slowly like really slow. & If there’s possible garages that offer this fuel in SA I highly recommend octane 97.

      No, not at all! I'm currently pouring in 0,5L oil every 2000-3000km.. I don't mind this as premium oil costs around R70 per 0.5L, the trick is to let your car warm-up to acceptable driving temp before driving as per the user manual, it's really not rocket science. Also, don't hard drive your GTI when the Oil temp is below 90^. Some of these guys are either unaware of or just don't want to follow these simple car care/routine steps and that's why they experience issues like these. Lastly, once your GTI reaches 160 000KM mileage, reduce service interval to 10 000KM and it must be a major service every time! You'll have a good running and long lasting car.

I have had to replace the water pump at around 92 000km and I am now on problem no5 with the chain tensioner being replaced as i write this. The car is now around 120 000km. I am now contemplating selling it due to the high cost repairs which is unfortunate as I loved the car. Heartbroken

      I suggest selling your car and get out while you can. If you're a big fan of the 1.4tfsi engine in your current car and want to stick to the same size car and platform, I suggest you take the Polo GTI 6R 1.8t for a test drive. It offers the same package with more power on a better engine platform.

Its on 235000KM so far with issues having been 1) Mechatronic replacement at 87000KM, 2) Timing Chain Replacement at 120000KM (routine maintanance) and 3) Water Pump failure/replacement at 228000KM which was reasonable after so long. Never had any other issues besides those above, I consider myself lucky and will be holding on to this babe.

      Keep in mind that there are some people who have experienced zero issues, some of them even commented on this video, but the odds of engine failure is high and that why we create these videos to educate people of the realities, not scare them away. If you have R25k saved up for possible repairs and a good extended warranty that covers the engine you should be good to proceed! After this video was posted one of our staff members experienced engine failure on he's 2009 VW Tiguan that's fitted with the exact same engine as the 6R Polo Gti. This engine failure occurred at 235 000km and was the first-ever big mechanical issues experienced on this car since new, I just want to highlight that the point at which the engine might fail is not a hard fact and low mileage cars have also been affected by engine failure.

(being extremely sarcastic) The 6R which is the twin charged 1.4tsi motor, if you can and have the money to open the motor? Stick a set of Wossener forged pistons and conrods. WIth this setup you'll have a very good car for years, up until such a time please know that that the fitted pistons ring landings break causing engine failure, a costly at that too.

      Hello dude :-) All 1.4tsi are affected, old, new, all of them. We've even seen customers who experienced engine failure and had the entire engine replaced by VWSA only to visit the dealer again after 10,000km with another broken piston. The best way to fix this issue, is to install better aftermarket pistons or forged pistons. No 1.4tsi engines are immune to engine failure. There are many lucky owners who have no issues, but these cases are less than the ones who have issues.

      I have had similar problems with mine . First my piston burnt so i replaced the engine with a complete import engine(R45k). They my clutch gave in i bought a clutch at vw and this cost me R14k. Labour for replacement of the clutch worked out R10k. Immediately I was told that my mechatronic needed to be replaced which cost me R27k without labour. This all happened with in a space of two years . Currently I'm sitting with the same issue again so its seems that the cycle of spending money on this car is starting all over again. Do you perhaps have any advice for me with regards to this issue I'm having please ?

    Was a fun car while it ran but mine just blew up, cost of repair is higher than the value of the vehicle, 120,000kms.
    Got the MY2014 model, after hearing that VW had fixed many of the issues by then.
    Check engine light came on, one piston not firing, whole piston apparatus needs replacing, ~6kAUD minimum to replace all pistons. haven't had the mechanic pull it apart to see if whole engine needs replacing, if it does, 10-12k AUD to fix.
    Mechanic tells me that my DSG is showing early signs of failure would cost 1k to diagnose, He's 80% confident my DSG has a hairline crack, about 5k AUD to fix, minimum.
    Car value is about 15k, cost of repairs is around ~15k.
    At this point I'm probably scrapping the car, might get $500Aud for it.
    Totally regret buying this car, wont buy VW again, horrid company, horrid car.

      You have literally described the situation I’m in verbatim, the only difference is I have only 36,000 km on the clock, I’m sickened by the horrendous build quality of the VWs I’ve already replaced the water pump at a cost of 1200 AUD and now I need to replace two pistons, average car value is roughly 14,000 AUD looking online and it’s going to cost a minimum of 7g AUD replace them probably more by the time the mechanics pull it apart. VW will not get a single extra penny from me.

      Aone Setimela if you can stretch your budget go for the Polo 6 R 1.8T gti manual. This model is not a good choice. Too many issues with a high probability of something failing. Alternatively if you get a 1.4tsi gti check the service & especially the dsg service history. On this model the dsg mechatronics & clutch is problematic. Also look at the mk7 fiesta st.
