    So glad that I watched this video. I have not been putting a label on my quilts because I felt intimidated by the process (speciality pens, neat printing, etc.). This is so quick that I don't have an excuse not to start getting labels done.

      Great! I am so happy it helped. There are so many different ways to do it and this way really is easy, albeit a bi pricey because of the printable fabric. You can make your own with freezer paper, but I haven't had much luck with it. I know lots of people who have, however. Thank you so much for commenting and watching! ❤️❤️❤️

    I really must start doing this. Soon I am sewing a quilt for my grandson. One time when he was over, he rang after school on a Friday and asked if he could spend the weekend with us, he commented on the quilt on his bed. He asked if I would make one for his bed at home. It would be really nice for this quilt to be labelled so he will always have a lasting memory of me and my love of sewing and sewing for him. Thanks for this Kris I wouldn't have known how to go about it.

      @@SewtheDistance I asked him what colours he would like and would he like to come and help choose some. He said he'd love to come with me. Then he said maybe he could help cut some of the fabric. Of course I said yes. He has already used my rotary cutter and mat and my sewing machine making a faux leather cover for note book so I know he will be ok. So, now on the label it will be mentioned that the both of us worked together from time to time on it. I joked with him though that he had better make sure his hands are grease free. He loves to be down with his grandpa in his workshop and grease is to them much more than glue is to us!!!! We only have one grandchild and I am so glad it's him. We all get along so well together. Soon he will be 16 and can start to learn to drive. Hubby and I said to our daughter that we will help pay for proper lessons for him. Straight to the driving school. No bad habits from us first off, then, when he gets proficient at driving the whole family have said they will take him out from time to time to get his hours up. Unfortunately covid has slowed all our plans down. Even going out and buying fabric has to be put on hold. It all will happen though.

    I learned a long time ago, that it is impossible to remember when you finish a quilt; therefore, I make lablels using the alphabet on my machine for every quilt. If I decide to gift it later, I add a fabric heart above my original label with the name of the recipient & additional info. I make my labels, backed with interfacing ... easy peasy. Until I watched this video, I did not think of using fusible interfacing. Thanks for the tip.

    I am really inspired by your labels! It is something I need to work on. I am working on my goals for this year (not resolutions). I like making goals. This might need to be one. Thank you! It is a great way to do it. I think you will love the crispness of these labels, too. The fabric really does feel like paper, but it does soft when washed, so that's good. Glad you enjoyed it! Last year, my resolution was to toss any pen that didn't work. LOL! It is a great resolution and has become a habit. Silly, but it is so helpful to know when I find a pen that it will actually work. :)

    Hi. I think I saw this video was from 2 years ago. Im wondering how the labels have held up in the wash now that you or someone has had a chance to test them. I have homeschooled half of the world and that has made me very familiar with Google lots of things ( docs, sheets, classroom…) and I am pretty good at getting my printer to do what I want it to. I make quilts that are really lived with and washed often. Camping, dogs, lemonade stands, beach blankets, car quilts. Multi purpose, multi use. I usually hand write my name and a date and I have been testing all sorts of pens and markers. I’m open to suggestions if you have a favorite. So far, fine line sharpies are way ahead of everything I have tested. Oh, and good video. I love your show and tell at the same time approach.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  2 місяці тому +1

      Oh my goodness! Thank you for coming back to this! I haven't had any issue with fading at all, but from what I have learned since making this video is that it really depends on the type of ink you use and not all printers use a pigment-based ink. That is the key--printing with a good ink. I hope this helps!

    Wow!! I didn't know I could go into Google Docs to design my labels! Thank You! Is there some way that I can 'grab' my label and move it or spin it around? I like to make triangular labels and fit them in the corner under the binding and hand stitch the 3rd side so I have to turn it so it is diagonal on the paper. I also like to fit as many as I can on a page so as to not waste my printable paper. I can't figure out if there is away to do this.

    Hello! When making a label using fabric paper and your printer, do you have to be concerned about the message fading after multiple machine washings? Looking to do this as a keepsake label on a child's quilt, but worried being able to read the message long term.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Рік тому +1

      Great question! I did a lot of research on this after the video first was published, and the short answer is that it depends on your printer, the ink, etc. You want a pigment ink in your printer. Some use pigment ink and some do not. You can have things printed at Staples and stores like this where they use permanent ink. Because it is a keepsake quilt that you are making, I would consider getting it printed at a shop to make sure. You can also get custom fabric labels from Spoonflower. Hope this helps!

      Hi! Sorry about the delay in responding. This is a GREAT question and honestly, I didn't know the answer and hadn't thought of this. Duh! I should have. I have been labeling my quilts this way for about ten years and I haven't had a problem. That said, my wonderful husband did a deep dive on this topic (he is great like that), and found that if you print with the black and white setting on our printer, it uses pigment ink, which is permanent. We have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600. Now, each printer is different, of course, so just make sure yours uses pigment ink. IF it doesn't, you can have them printed at copy shops or Staples, etc. I hope this helps! I will be chatting about this in my monthly vlog next week. If you have any other questions, let me know, and I can try to find out.

      I haven’t had an issue with it, but that’s a great question. The ink needs to be permanent, so it really depends on your printer. I wish I had a better answer for you. I really should test it.

      @@SewtheDistance I just realized that spell check garbled my previous question. The permanent ink pens (micron, pigma ink) that many suggest using for labels, are used frequently in scrapbooking, and they are permanent on paper, but they fade with laundering. I guess the best bet is to only use the on wall hanging type quilts that aren’t washed frequently. Thanks for your reply. Perhaps I’ll print a trial label and wash it a few times.

      I’m also thinking of using this idea for labeling. One of the tips was waiting for the ink to dry and then pressing the fabric. Apparently it’s suppose to set the ink and make it permanent. I also know it depends on what brand of fabric sheets you buy. One brand has you soak it in water to set the ink.
