So happy I found your videos!! You're absolutely good at these log cabin blocks! It's beyond beautiful!! When visiting my mother in Canada back 15 years ago for Christmas she'd suddenly & so very unexpectedly passed away!! I was heart sick! 🥹 Before I flew back home I'd gone into her sewing room & brought back with me the Kanas Trouble FQB & backing she bought here when with me. After seeing your Log Cabin Tutorial I thought about my mother & went & got out that FQB I'd hung onto for all these years! That was the perfect quilt to make in her remembrance of this beautiful fabric she loved so much. I'm so much like you. I don't like the cut & trim continuing like some do. And it's okay if they do right. And I'm a starch too!! I've quilted for over 60 years now. I started at 6-7 years old & had the very best teacher ever! My mother! So many times I've held that FQB & wept! I've missed my mother something terrible! She'd be so happy to see me making a quilt out of the fabric that she loved so very much. I do have a question if I could please. This FQB she had bought long ago doesn't have any lights in it. Mustard yellow yes & I too would take those out. What would you suggest I do to get the lights that would work well with this FQB I have. She'd taken the FQB apart however looking through it I believe the line is Bound To The Prairie line. As for a background, you could get a Kansas Trouble bundle and use the lights in in. Their palettes all seem to include the same types of backgrounds and go with a lot of their fabric lines. You could also use light beiges and light brown from scraps or yardage. It is a bit more work, but would be worth it in the end, too. Again, thank you for sharing this. Thank you for the tutorial on making a jelly roll quilt. I found out the hard way about wof strips (mercifully the finished quilt was good with careful sewing and squaring up. Now I cut yardage on length of fabric, cutting the strips before sewing. I even cut borders and binding on length of fabric (reduces the cursing and makes sewing much more fun!). I’ll try starching to see what that feels like.
I wish I could have seen this video back in the early 1980s. However, the internet was not around back then. Neather was home computers for people like me. You have brought back some really bad memories of all the problems that I had with the Log Cabin quilt that I made over 35 years ago. I don't remember anything about that quilt being easy, fun, or pain free. I wish I could have had a teacher as good as you to have made that experence more enjoyable for myself and my two children. . Back in the 1980s, I made a very large log cabin quilt (that was used as a bed spread). I sewed my fabric first - then I cut my logs. It was a mess. I ended up having to take most of the top completely apart (then sewed it back together after I removed or replaced my mistakes). I should not have force yourself try to meet a deadline. This is the quilt that I put the machine quilting needle (and thread) completely through my left index finger (with a Singer 301). I was trying to quilt a very large quilt in a very small area - don't do that. Those old Singers can sew through almost anything. It took a long time for my finger to heal; and, it took a very long time to grow my finger nail out. I finished quilting that quilt out in my father's open carport where I had enough space to machine quilt that large quilt (using a large wooden door, on top of two old metal box fans, as a table). The children took turns helping me keep that quilt moving and off the floor. Sometimes some of their playmates joined in. Note: My saliva really did get that blood stain out. However, you have to get it out while the blood is fresh. I have always wanted to make a blue and off white quilt. A Log Cabin quilt would be the perfect project for that quilt. Thank you for this video.
Ouch! I almost sewed through my finger once. It scares me! I just got a Juki and it will sew through anything, too. It can sew through up to 13 layers of denim! It also sews 1500 stitches/minutes. So scary! I am sorry you had such a bad experience with the log cabin quilt. I think we learn the 'fast" way sometimes and teachers don't always point out or even know some of the issues it can cause, especially for a new sewist. Just stitching the "logs" on and cutting is one of those cases. It really makes for a wonky block. I am so happy this helped you, at least a little, in deciding to tackle this pattern again. I can so relate! My quilt was from the eighties too and was overwhelming because you had to rely on the attention you could grab from the instructor in a quilt-in-a-day retreat setup. If you were shy and retiring allowing others to ask questions first you would never get the support you needed that the internet and home computers now support. Thank goodness! Ouch on your finger. My machine now has all the bells and whistles that newer machines afford the sewer. All the more intimidating but exciting too. Having a knee lift control will help avoid accidents for me so I do not get confused and can better concentrate without distraction. So relieved you have mended. What a scary experience.😢🌻🌺🍀

Loved this tutorial! A number of good tips. My favorite was when you took your strips and organized and clipped them together for your block. I think that actually took anxiety out of this project. That way you can see how each block will turn out... just super. Thanks for taking your time , energy and talent and then sharing it with all of us.
Wow! I cannot wait to try your method including starch. I always hate the fast method that always ends up waving like a flag. I have been quilting forever (and working fulltime so quilting is always in bits & pieces) but never thought starch & precutting my pre cuts would help but I believe it now. You are so welcome! Precutting those strips is a game-changer, for sure! The starch can make the strips smaller, but for a log cabin, I find it necessary. So happy this helps you!
The log cabin quilt in a day was my second quilt many years ago back before there were jelly rolls, cake squares and such. My pleasure! You are so sweet! Thank you so much! Oof. That 1/4" seam with pinked edges--this is such a tough one! Each company seems to have their own way of doing it. Some measure the 2.5" to the points of the pinked edges and some to the valley. My best advice is to be consistent and it won't really matter either way. Still, it can be tough. I wish I had a better solution for you! It definitely drives me crazy, too. You are not alone.

I would love to learn more about cutting because I did make something that came out pretty wonky and I’m not totally clear why. I didn’t quite understand what you were saying about how to cut and not cut. I’m confused. Thank you for any clarity you can offer. Loved this video. Great question! I think you are referring to me saying not to just add the "logs" to the log cabin, but to actually cut them to the measurement. This will ensure a non-wonky block. Some people add the strip and then cut it after they add it, but it won't stay true to size. I hope this makes sense. As for a block not coming out the right size, it would be because of many reasons. When I am teaching classes, the most common thing i see is people not using a true quarter inch seam allowance. Make sure to check that first. That could be way you are having an issue. After that, make sure you are cutting the correct size using the ruler (not the mat) as you guide. Mats don't stay true to size, unfortunately. I hope these ideas help! Please feel free to ask more questions if you are still unsure. I am happy to help! I purchased two jelly rolls to make as big of a quilt as possible. The colors are all dark and medium fabrics. How many dark strips did you use altogether to make the quilt? Also, how many light strips did you use?
I couldn't quite remember what I used, but thankfully I did put some measurements in the comments. LOL! Here's what you will need: For ONE Block: From Dark 2.5" Strips: (1) 2.5" (1) 4.5" (1) 6.5" (1) 8.5" (1) 10.5" (1) 12.5" (1) 14.5" From Light 2.5" Strips: (1) 2.5" (1) 4.5" (1) 6.5" (1) 8.5" (1) 10.5" (1) 12.5" For the entire quilt top (56.5" x 56.5"): Dark 2.5" Strips: (16) 2.5" (16) 4.5" (16) 6.5" (16) 8.5" (16) 10.5" (16) 12.5" (16) 14.5" Light 2.5" Strips: (16) 2.5" (16) 4.5" (16) 6.5" (16) 8.5" (16) 10.5" (16) 12.5" If you don't have enough light, you could always get a light-only jelly roll or cut it from your scraps. Will one jelly roll only make 16 of these blocks? I added up the size and for a good size lap quilt I would need 20, 4 x 5, What would your suggestion be? I am fairly new at quilting and don't do quilting math. I'm sure I would need to add fabric as in more strips but do you know how much? I would appreciate the help. I do just love this quilt so much. Can you show how you did your binding for this quilt? Did you cut off the stepped edges or bind around them?
Hi Michelle! Since you are fairly new to quilting, I would recommend getting two jelly rolls, so you have room for error. Either that or purchase some matching yardage to supplement the fabric line in case you mis-cut or mis-sew the fabric. Always a good idea. As for binding, I pieced the strips and made the binding. Sorry about the confusion.I had to go back and watch--you are right! I guess for the first one I pressed in. Sorry about that! The goal is to get it as flat as possible. Hi Kris when you starch your strips do you iron the starch in before you hang them up to dry or just after they have dried. I understand that you get the creases out first but do you iron them fully. Thanks Desley
Great question! I don't iron the starch in until the are completely dry and when i do iron them, I don't use steam. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
When ironing long strips like that do you tap and press as you go or do you push through the length of the strip so as not to stretch the fabric? I always wonder about proper ironing technique for accurate blocks. I never realized about steam and heat with starch and the unstable nature it can create with fabric stretch. Good hint.🌹
Great question! They definitely pulled in end to end, but not widthwise. They stayed a true 2.5." It may be worth testing if you use a different fabric line.
It really depends of the size queen you want to make since you may want a drop, extra to cover the pillows, etc. It is easy to figure out once you know the size you would like. Here's an example: The blocks are 14" square finished, so divide the desired length by 14." Then, divided the desired width by 14". Take those two numbers and multiply them. For example, if you want a quilt that is 84" wide by 98" long, your equation would look like this: 84/14 = 6 98/14 = 7 6 x 7 = 42 You would need 42 blocks. Hope this helps!
I messed up my block. But I'm not taking it out I'm just going to finish it the way I have it. It will be a little different since I flip the colors around still all good. Next time I will do it right.
Agreed. Our “mistakes” make our quilts unique and add a human element to the life of quilting. Nothing is perfect just creative. Have fun and don’t give up like I did.
Hi! I depending on the size of the table runner, I would say half a roll would be plenty. The fabric is by Kansas Trouble Quilters by Moda and is called Prairie Dreams. Most of their lines of fabric go together, so I am sure you could find a burgundy that works. I don't sell fabric or I would help you out. Maybe check with your local quilt shops? I am sure they can get this in stock. I hope this helps!
I think I am using the wooden one in this video. I bought it from the Amish in my area. Handmade. I have another that is white metal that I picked up at a yard sale. There isn’t a name printed on it. Sorry! Wish I could help more!
Everyone has their own way, right? I don't like pressing open because I feel like it if quilting stitches hit on that open seam, it will open the seam up, but I completely understand why people do it. It does help with the bulk. We all have to do what we are comfortable with. ❤️❤️❤️
At least one, but I did go into a second jellyroll some. You wouldn't need to purchase an entire second jellyroll if you have strips or fabric to cut into strips that would match coordinate with your jellyroll. I hope this helps!

I found that I could cut the 12.5, 10.5, 8.5, 6.5, and 4.5 pieces from one jelly roll strip. It made it easier to keep the colors well distributed.
Great idea as long as you have a strip long enough. It cuts (pun intended) it a little close for my comfort. 😀

Oof. That 1/4" seam with pinked edges--this is such a tough one! Each company seems to have their own way of doing it. Some measure the 2.5" to the points of the pinked edges and some to the valley. My best advice is to be consistent and it won't really matter either way. Still, it can be tough. I wish I had a better solution for you! It definitely drives me crazy, too. You are not alone.

I would love to learn more about cutting because I did make something that came out pretty wonky and I’m not totally clear why. I didn’t quite understand what you were saying about how to cut and not cut. I’m confused. Thank you for any clarity you can offer. Loved this video. Great question! I think you are referring to me saying not to just add the "logs" to the log cabin, but to actually cut them to the measurement. This will ensure a non-wonky block. Some people add the strip and then cut it after they add it, but it won't stay true to size. I hope this makes sense.
As for a block not coming out the right size, it would be because of many reasons. When I am teaching classes, the most common thing i see is people not using a true quarter inch seam allowance. Make sure to check that first. That could be way you are having an issue. After that, make sure you are cutting the correct size using the ruler (not the mat) as you guide. Mats don't stay true to size, unfortunately. I hope these ideas help! Please feel free to ask more questions if you are still unsure. I am happy to help! Hi, thanks so much for the tutorial. It is very helpful. Question: I know you said in the video that you used 7 dark fabrics and 6 light fabrics. I purchased two jelly rolls to make as big of a quilt as possible. The colors are all dark and medium fabrics. How many dark strips did you use altogether to make the quilt? Also, how many light strips did you use?
I couldn't quite remember what I used, but thankfully I did put some measurements in the comments. LOL! Here's what you will need: For ONE Block:
From Dark 2.5" Strips:
(1) 2.5"
(1) 4.5"
(1) 6.5"
(1) 8.5"
(1) 10.5"
(1) 12.5"
(1) 14.5"
From Light 2.5" Strips:
(1) 2.5"
(1) 4.5"
(1) 6.5"
(1) 8.5"

For the entire quilt top (56.5" x 56.5"):

If you don't have enough light, you could always get a light-only jelly roll or cut it from your scraps. I hope this helps!

Will one jelly roll only make 16 of these blocks? I added up the size and for a good size lap quilt I would need 20, 4 x 5, What would your suggestion be? I am fairly new at quilting and don't do quilting math. I'm sure I would need to add fabric as in more strips but do you know how much? I would appreciate the help. I do just love this quilt so much. Can you show how you did your binding for this quilt? Did you cut off the stepped edges or bind around them?
Hi Michelle! Since you are fairly new to quilting, I would recommend getting two jelly rolls, so you have room for error. Either that or purchase some matching yardage to supplement the fabric line in case you mis-cut or mis-sew the fabric. Always a good idea. As for binding, I pieced the strips and made the binding. You said you always press out but the first seam was pressed in (toward the dark side). Is it outward or inward?
Sorry about the confusion.I had to go back and watch--you are right! I guess for the first one I pressed in. Sorry about that! The goal is to get it as flat as possible. The first one isn't as critical, but you could still press this outward if you'd like. Either would work for the first one. Hope this helps and again, I apologize for the confusion. 💕

Because I measure each piece, I don't have to. It makes for a more stable and square block.

Hi Kris when you starch your strips do you iron the starch in before you hang them up to dry or just after they have dried. I understand that you get the creases out first but do you iron them fully. Thanks Desley
Great question! I don't iron the starch in until the are completely dry and when i do iron them, I don't use steam. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
When ironing long strips like that do you tap and press as you go or do you push through the length of the strip so as not to stretch the fabric? I always wonder about proper ironing technique for accurate blocks. I never realized about steam and heat with starch and the unstable nature it can create with fabric stretch. Good hint.🌹

Great question! They definitely pulled in end to end, but not widthwise. They stayed a true 2.5." It may be worth testing if you use a different fabric line.
I know this is a late comment, but how many of these sized blocks would I need to make a queen size quilt?
It really depends of the size queen you want to make since you may want a drop, extra to cover the pillows, etc. It is easy to figure out once you know the size you would like. Here's an example:
The blocks are 14" square finished, so divide the desired length by 14." Then, divided the desired width by 14". Take those two numbers and multiply them.
For example, if you want a quilt that is 84" wide by 98" long, your equation would look like this:
84/14 = 6
98/14 = 7
6 x 7 = 42
You would need 42 blocks. Hope this helps!
I messed up my block. But I'm not taking it out I'm just going to finish it the way I have it. It will be a little different since I flip the colors around still all good. Next time I will do it right.

Hi! I depending on the size of the table runner, I would say half a roll would be plenty. The fabric is by Kansas Trouble Quilters by Moda and is called Prairie Dreams. Most of their lines of fabric go together, so I am sure you could find a burgundy that works. I don't sell fabric or I would help you out. Maybe check with your local quilt shops? I am sure they can get this in stock. I hope this helps!

No, this tutorial is for a 56” x 56” quilt, so a lap size, and you have at add a few extra strips to get it.
How many light strips did you use altogether?
I’d say about 18 strips. I used some scraps so not full strips for the extra pieces.
What is the brand of the drying rack used?
I think I am using the wooden one in this video. I bought it from the Amish in my area. Handmade. I have another that is white metal that I picked up at a yard sale. There isn’t a name printed on it. Sorry! Wish I could help more!

I do not every press to one side. I press the seams open. It is less bulky and easy to match seams.
Everyone has their own way, right? I don't like pressing open because I feel like it if quilting stitches hit on that open seam, it will open the seam up, but I completely understand why people do it. It does help with the bulk. We all have to do what we are comfortable with. ❤️❤️❤️

How many jelly rolls would I need?
At least one, but I did go into a second jellyroll some. You wouldn't need to purchase an entire second jellyroll if you have strips or fabric to cut into strips that would match coordinate with your jellyroll. I hope this helps!
