      Shawn Reedy Man, that's one hell of a hill to die on!!! I mean I get it, & certainly respect the fierce challenge but there might be plenty more inside yourselves that you're just simply afraid of facing...including those bands listed above. Tremendous expressions, plenty. Still just cause some artists choose to finally take it down a level, don't mean they lack soul. I know that's not what you said nor is it what you've implied. Just thought I'd make the observation that attitudes like that especially from real musicians, they tend to burn themselves down real quick because eventually no one cares to listen.

      Duder, not that I give a shit about Nirvana or Cobain that much at this point as a 39-year old and not that they are in any way relevant to this thread, but since you insist on incessantly bringing them up...
      Melvins formed '83, and were playing shows influencing regionally within months (first tour '85/'86), for reference Nirvana started dinking around in about '87 but weren't really Nirvana in name or otherwise until well along '88, originally just jammed with members of Melvins before or alone separately - Dale Crover - world-class drummer of Melvins played shows and toured as Nirvana's drummer whenever they were in need until '90 (he also played on their original Reciprocal demo, multiple "Bleach" songs and "Incesticide" tracks, and additionally most importantly by the late 80's long before the masses knew of or gave a shit about Nirvana, Melvins had already moved to San Francisco, quit their day jobs, and we're making a living purely on record sales, lots of local shows, and up and down West Coast, not even counting their tour income - from late 80's to now Melvins have averaged 100+ shows across the entire globe (5 continents and counting) almost every single year, some years closer to 180. They have lived in L.A. since early/mid 90's and have been making a great living ever since and continue to influence bands young and old - their respect among peers is almost unparalleled and they spearheaded multiple punk/metal/avant-noise sub-genres.
      Soundagarden and Nirvana were known fans, both of whom took liberally from them, and while Nirvana were friends as well as Soundgarden, only S.G. were actual peers onntheur musical level, also having formed with less than year of Melvins - both playing with & influencing damn near every legendary hardcore punk, art-weirdo, sludge/doomy metal or indie Alt-rock band that toured through the Northwest/west coast in the 80's.
      Ministry most definitely tip their hats to Melvins - it is well-documented, as do everyone from Melt Banana to METZ to Napalm Death to Boris to Sunno))) to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion to Mudhoney to so so many punk bands to even more mainstream acts.
      Buzz is a happy, and sardonic jovial guy. Not bitter. An incredible songwriter/musician with well-deserved success who is always happy for the success of his friends/peers. Met & interviewed him numerous times.

    I can honestly say the Melvins and Riggor Mortis/Ministry where the first ones who started this genre.
    But Riggor Mortis was kinda had that Sludge-doom metal at first, then Al geared more to different stuff which is called Industrial metal.
    The Melvins where the first ones started the whole Doom/sludge metal. Then It was caught on by bands from south like texas and Nola.
    They too had demos about year or two getting signed where passed around like Metallica. But it was called the underground. this is where that term came from.

      @78sound I Really like "With Sympathy" I believe 83 that was in Studio. Totally different than when I first saw the Melvins in 1984. Not even close. Back in the day we would go to night clubs and listen to Effigy and Revenge which was pure dance club music. The Melvins in 84 were the (in my opinion) the first hard grunge sound along with Green River and Malfunkshun. Totally different crowd. Here is some crazy shit, in the same dance club around 88 I was coming back from a Punk club and passing by and saw a concert just got out, asked who just played and was told some band called the NIN. In 1988 I was blown away with the Land or Rape and Honey as that was not the same sound at all. Twitch and With Sympathy were synth pop-New Wave. I would stand next to Buzz at some punk shows in Seattle and from what he is talking about I don"t think he knew that Ministry had successful albums before the Land of Rape and Honey. Those days were fun! Melvins, Soundgarden, and Green River would open for Husker DU and those shows were only $7....Cheers!

    • @mikemike8142
      @mikemike8142 5 років тому +1

      @78sound Oh man, about 86 there was this pretty cool punk club (a total dive) that got shut down. It was called the Gorilla Gardens. That night Melvins and a few others were opening up for the Circle Jerks. Jerks were on for one song then the fire marshal said too many people for this small space and shut it down. A riot broke out. This clip is on UA-cam and was the night before Thanksgiving. Kids got arrested and this ruined the whole Seattle punk club scene. Melvins were the kind of guys that after their set would just join in the crowd and BS with you. Buzz, Dale, and Matt. Some punk rockers just could not get them unless you liked Black Sabbath sound they were your band, i would have named them Punk Sabbath. Buzz always had a Kiss sticker on his guitar? Too mainstream for me. Shortly after the scene was fading Melvins moved to San Fran. Is it safe to say that there would be no Nirvana if not for Buzz? Buzz got Kurt into all that crazy shit. After the 1990 Melvins I stopped listening to them, Ministry was far better produced and had a more powerful sound Melvins were slow. There was a band in Vancouver called Windwalker who even covered "Burning Inside" on the Mint label around 1990 and we all know that Van City had Skinny Puppy too that were legends for that sound. Seattle was still doing punk rock Zeppelin bands. If you get a chance check out "Die Kreuzen Milwaukee cable TV 1983" they were Seattle Grunge before Seattle had Grunge in fact the guy that gave me a cassette with this band was Chad Channing (Nirvana's drummer on Bleach) who loved this sound, i had attended high school with him, cool guy! I could go on for hours my friend, take care!

      Great NW stories (also read/heard from local friends/heros before), however if you stopped with Melvins in '90, you are missing out on a fuck of a lot! Far from simply 'slow', they incredibly dynamic and powerful - both live and in record, and a number of albums also quite well-produced & always creative.
      Sometimes they are even quite fast!

    • @mattfoley1207
      @mattfoley1207 2 роки тому

      Also while Melvins formed in '83 and we're playing shows & influencing peers within months, yes it is true Ministry formed in '81, however it was across the country and as another below remarks they started as synth-pop before adding post-punk/industrial elements and eventually much metal (they became virtually an entirely different band once members of Seattle/Boston-based band, Blackouts, joined), whereas Melvins were a powerhouse agressive beast from the jump - originally fastest band in Seattle area, then slowest, then much dynamics and wide spectrum of tempos, genres/sub-genre experimentation & melding - punk, metal, slow, fast, mid-tempo, odd-meter, art-noise - sometimes all within one song or album.

    LOL I don't think he was describing "With Sympathy" or "Twitch" he must be talking about their 3rd album. Twitch was cool, but I wouldn't describe it as "relentless pounding". "With Sympathy" is probably the biggest joke of an album of all time. "Land of Rape and Honey" did rock though.

    wasn't Ministry around longer than the Melvins? anyways, Al started out synth pop more than metal, until TLORAH came out, which featured more heavy power chords. I tuned out after Psalm 69.

      Agreed, almost. NIN are utter garbage. Faux-manufactured "angst" at its worst. Take away the stage setup, lights, backing tracks, and outfits...a real emperor has no clothes scenario.
      Saw them with Soundgarden. They were an embarrassment as follow-up.
      S.G. came out and just ROCKED with depth and without pretense, blew those clowns off the stage.

    I like this guy music and watching his interviews, Mike Patton stories and stuff, but watching him on his couch petting his dog talking about a potential influence over Ministry's albums, and how he doesn't like GnR (wow, I didn't except that at all!) is a little too much... Silly thing is the 50000 (so many "true melvins fan" out there)
    So what's next guys? When will we get a Buzz Osbourne BBQ Recipe Channel? make-up tutorial? Video game reviews?

    Well said King Buzzo. We were ALL sick and tired of Guns'N'Roses by 1992. Guns blatantly ripped off the Stones efforts via Exile on Main Street and of course Physical Graffiti by Zeppelin.
    Al Jourgensen ... ENDED the by then bullshit sounding Guns'N'roses and was the PERFECT ALTERNATIVE to Nirvana. Nirvana in turn ripped off Sonic Youth and Husker DU. Ministry through their album The Mind is A Terrible Thing to Taste lay the ground work for the pounding sound that became the wall of sound for Psalm 69. Since Psalm 69. Al Jourgensen was blatantly ripped of ..... for years . . . with the best example is White Zombie becoming the industrial Rob Zombie.
