Paul I'm half your age and my knees hurt just watching you get into and out of each position just to give us that piece of added realism. Thanks for the extra effort that few other guys put into their videos
I never see anybody practice the sitting or prone position at the range. Some people zero from a rest and never try to shoot offhand while standing. Where I live, if I did practice sitting at the range, I guarantee that I wouldn't be wearing the same insulated hunting pants switch is going to change the whole sitting position. I would never be able to get down or up from that position.
You should try it when you only have one leg, and an above knee prosthetic. It's embarrassing trying to get up with something to grab hold of to help on solid flat ground, let me tell you soft wet hillsides like that of deer season here it's down right comical watching me try to get up. My solution is I stole an idea from Buffalo hunters. I use a firing stake, aka monopod, from the standing position, or I lean up against a tree. May not be the best firing position, but they work. Thankfully I rarely have to leave my porch to get a few deer each year. And my ATV with a small tilting wagon is a life saver.
I’m glad somebody else was identifying with that “I’m not young anymore” torture. I was thinking that a lot of the viewers were wondering why Paul was getting out of breath. Bless them and their youth. They’ll find out all too soon.

I've never been in the Military or spent alot of time around firearms. Ive hunted, and went shooting but never very extensively. I can honestly say though, I've learned so much more by watching these presentations over the past few years. Just by following basic advice about stance, breath control, trigger control and awareness of what I'm shooting at. My overall accuracy has improved ten-fold, still catch a flyer every now and again though. That's just me 🤣
I remember when when a couple of my friends bought their Thompson Center Compasses chambered in 6.5 Creedmor, and thought they were going to be 1000-yard commandos. They came back from the range and were frustrated by how they couldn't zero the rifle. Turns out, they had followed the advice of buying multiple types of ammo to see what worked best for accuracy, but didn't know that their point-of-impact would change when you change your ammo type. It took taking them back out to the range to demonstrate this phenomenon to convince them. They're doing better now today, although I think they have yet to move beyond anything beyond 100 yards.
Whenever Paul fires a shot, my phone's CC calls it "music" or "applause". Both are very appropriate. It is music to my ears and I applaud all he does for us.
I love the Clint Eastwood quote. As for me, laying prone has never crossed my mind while deer hunting. I guess having a foot of snow makes a difference. Also, accurate shots for me would be holding my rifle up against a tree or resting on the end of my tree stand.
I am glad I am not the only one who caught that. "I know what you are thinking. Did he shoot six shots? Or was it only five? In all the excitement, I lost count. I watch quite alot of videos on 1.25x myself just to save time.
Paul I've been watching your videos for years, and I strongly identify with your training techniques, weapons choices, and old school approach. Just as important, I very much enjoy your sense of humor. When you made the reference to the classic Dirty Harry "six shots or only five" line, I would have bet my whole gun collection that following the "Deer Misser" story you would have summed that character up with "A man's got to know his limitations.". I was a little disappointed, but never-the-less I still enjoyed the video, keep them coming!!!
Amusing story. Also, every hunter in my family shoots deer "off tree" whenever possible. Whether it be leaning against a tree for stability or using a thick branch as a rest.
It's amazing how many rests there are in the woods. Also, if you have to assume an awkward position, ease in to it, rather than making fast, easily discernable movements. You might get busted, but you'll get in to a more solid position if the critter sticks around and you're not as likely to terrify it.
I have a VERY strong feeling that "Deer Misser" is TOO stupid to know anything about Paul or shooting or Paul's videos on shooting or hunting or anything else related to firearms.
6:06 another issue with taking the time to get into a kneeling position is that the movement and noise of it (depending on the type of ground) may spook a deer.

Ah, those actors miserably failing at playing 'the candidates' or 'the top politicians' or some such play? I think they didn't debate. They only faked the event, both minutely following the script. Today, there are no politicians, scientists, businessmen, leaders, writers or artists anymore. We only see actors who are playing their rôles, according to a destructive script that only our most deadly foe could devise.
Bought a Rossi Model 92 in .38/.357 a couple of months ago at my local mom and pop gun shop here, Upstate New York. The shop also has a 100 yard outdoor range out back, so i go to try it out fresh out of the box. We have unfortunately had a huge influx of rich NYC citiots as we call them up here, moving into the area and some of them are getting into shooting. Hopefully not hunting. Long story short, i have an audience of two city guys who were practicing with their very high end 22 magnum rifles with very high end scopes, and yes, these guys were a couple, so I figured I might have a little performance anxiety because they stopped shooting and we’re watching me. So i loaded up the Rossi with 11 Remington.38 special rounds in jacketed round nose (green box UMC rounds) and i was pinging torso sized metal plates at 100 yards from a standing position. After each ping they heard, they cheered. Extremely happy guys indeed. So i got exactly 9 out of 11 at 100 yards with no adjustment to the iron sights from standing. I blame the two misses on performance anxiety. But 9/11 is good enough for me.
Getting up early is good for you. Try doing it every day, and watch your life and productivity improve. Bonus: you get to watch Paul Harrell videos when they're uploaded!
This year, I was able to get into a prone position on the first day. The ground under me was level, except a small rise, that mimicked my shooting bags perfectly. Two buck were 30 yards away, just downhill making the rest I was using absolutely perfect. I take aim at the six point, and... sun was directly in my eyes, and I couldn't find my front sight on my Garand, with the bucks in the shade. To make matters worse, the bucks were behind some dark bushes that I could see through, but didn't feel comfortable taking the shot. They ran. I got home and my Truck had a flat (it had been leaking air for some time and couldn't be repaired), and the spare that I'm using for the first time is a 20in. The rest of my tires are 17in. Better luck next year I guess...
@@ViktoriousDead I always use iron sights when I'm walking through heavily wooded areas. This was just the first time the sun was directly behind my shot. It didn't help that I forgot my shades. Every deer I've seen in that area has been within 50yrds. I've even crept up with 15, one time.
@@robertculpepper1508 I got into prone also to hide my silhouette. The sun was shining right on me through a opening in the trees. Like I said, besides the sun and bushes, it was otherwise a perfect position.
Hey Paul, great video. Do you have any particular breathing techniques that you utilize while shooting? I noticed that you sigh after every shot during your one-shot group test. Maybe you could do a video demonstrating different breathing techniques with different style firearms
Never did I ever consider it a bother hearing you say “please bear with me” your presentations are always a pleasure and I look forward to many more of them.
Great advice Mr. Harrell. Love your videos. Something from most of us out-of-shape, overweight men: If I get down into that position, I ain't gettin' up.
I'm not a deer hunter but did watch the whole video at regular speed. Paul is much more agile than any of the deer hunters that i know. After many years of yoga I can get up and down from the ground easily. Some of these guys, not so easily. Nice going Paul!
Practise does more than just train your mind and muscles. One deer season I sat in a deer blind that I had used for years, but brought a different rifle than usual. Naturally I missed a very nice buck, I shot low. The following summer I took the rifle to a local gun range to check zero. The shooting position I used in that blind was a kneeling position supported by 2 hay bales stacked on one another, and the height of the given shooting benches was about the same. I noticed very quickly that my groups were considerably lower than they should have been. After shooting a couple groups offhand and sitting with a rest, the groups improved. I then tried kneeling again, but really paid attention to my form. Turns out the position of my head on the stock was different, I had to crane my neck forward a bit to line up the sights because the supported position was just a bit too low. I was basically looking down onto the open sights, and it was changing the way I viewed them just enough to change point of impact.
I’m kinda spoiled out at the farm. Every single one of my kills have been with my Savage .270 and iron sights. The reason? Usually less than 120yds. Paul’s kneeling position has usually been ideal for me. There are lucky times when I’m aiming down a coulee and can actually sit on my butt and use a knee like a monopod.
Scott Kenny It’s a blessing, no doubt. Thing is, around this time, I start to get calls from friends and acquaintances that I haven’t heard from for a year... 🤔

When someone is willing to take the time to impart their wisdom, it behooves one to take the time to listen, I'm listening and it's not boring.
I think this is the most animated that I've seen you. Everything you said is sound, but you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?"
Paul got a serious leg workout in this video. Better you than me sir! Thank you for what you do for us all
I see Paul was getting his cardio for the day. 😛
Great how Paul slips in the Dirty Harry reference with Deer Misser. Comic genius, informative, knowledgeable. Great combination.
I’ve watched this video 3 times now and still cannot find Paul reaching into his pockets for a pistol or ammunition? 2020 sure is messed up!
So, you've watched a nearly 30 minute video 3 times and it has only been out less than a hour.... how'd you manage that?
I guess several others got the humour .....lighten up mood hoover.
@@EricRedbear three separate tabs, obviously.
I have to ask ... can you see my comment Urban?
@@urbanjungle9600 if you click or tap your screen on the video you will see 3 dots arranged vertically in the upper right corner. Click this and there you will see several options, one of which is playback speed. It goes up to 2x. So technically he could have watched it 3 times in about 44 minutes.
A new Paul Harrell Video on time for breakfast.... the perfect start into the day. PS: greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Somewhere there's a guy watching this who missed out on the chance of instruction from Paul Harrell and knows they laughed whilst he missed that deer!
I have a VERY strong feeling that "Deer Misser" is TOO stupid to know anything about Paul or shooting or Paul's videos on shooting or hunting or anything else related to firearms.
@@thomast8539 one of my old instructors used to say "you can't educate pork"
Paul's anecdotes are my favorite parts of his segments.
6:06 another issue with taking the time to get into a kneeling position is that the movement and noise of it (depending on the type of ground) may spook a deer.
If you need to kneel to shoot the deer is probably quite a ways away “ unless your trying to shoot under brush”. So noise shouldn’t be a problem
Dry leaves, number one enemy of a hunter’s feet
My left knee is very crunchy and I sometimes wonder if a deer would hear it lol. Guess I’ll find out when I get there!
Ive only ever hunted steel targets, but I absolutely will listen to and watch any information you're willing to give out.
Perfect post-debate entertainment! 👍🏻
Trump destroyed Biden, Biden said he'd get rid of oil and Paul posts a video. End of 2020 is looking up.
I didn't watch. Did anything funny happen?
@@Stop_Gooning
Ya. Joe told Trump "I didn't say that about fracking!
Trump said "It's on video!"
Then Joe says, "Put it on your website."
So, Trump did.😊
Ah, those actors miserably failing at playing 'the candidates' or 'the top politicians' or some such play? I think they didn't debate. They only faked the event, both minutely following the script.
Today, there are no politicians, scientists, businessmen, leaders, writers or artists anymore. We only see actors who are playing their rôles, according to a destructive script that only our most deadly foe could devise.

Nothing like waking up in the moring and getting to watch a new Paul Harrell video !!! My day has been completely made better now.... nice video
Getting ready to go to bed... Paul posts a new video... sleep can wait.
But 9/11 is good enough for me.
omg the laughter at 19:53 !!! The echo :D hilarious!
Where is the loudest noise I’ve ever heard coming out of Paul in all the years I’ve been following him

I really enjoy the anecdotes and listening to what you have to say. For me they are the main reason I wait for your videos to post.
Also: Standing, with support, if available.

The fact that I’m watching this at 1 am instead of sleeping make me wonder if I have a problem.
It’s Paul Harrell. Not insomnia. You’re fine.
1 am’s not that late if we’re honest
Insomnia 🙋
No.
I watched it at 1:40 am! 😊
As far as I can tell, this is Paul's best video today. Made me laugh out loud several times.
You got into prone for a 30 yard shot 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Really not your day.
Maybe don’t hunt with a garland with Irons, unless you’re consistently shooting 30 yds
For hunting “Deer”.
I see what you did there sir. Informative and humble as always
Hey Paul, great video. Do you have any particular breathing techniques that you utilize while shooting? I noticed that you sigh after every shot during your one-shot group test. Maybe you could do a video demonstrating different breathing techniques with different style firearms
19:53 is better than any video game jumpscare. I never thought Paul would be capable of such a thing.
I look forward to your stories. They're always interesting, amusing, and instructive.
Never did I ever consider it a bother hearing you say “please bear with me” your presentations are always a pleasure and I look forward to many more of them.
Mr. Harrell, I was taught to use the sling wrapped under my elbow in all positions. How good of a technique is that?
Legit
Works very well for standing shots. Was taught in the military for steadying a shot years ago.
if you find it comfortable and helps accuracy that's the main thing , trying different techniques isn't a bad thing either
Kyle Rittenhouse would say it's not nessesary.
Helps support the rifle and tends to reduce movement of the support arm.
Great advice Mr. Harrell. Love your videos.
Something from most of us out-of-shape, overweight men: If I get down into that position, I ain't gettin' up.
+1 for the Dirty Harry reference. :)
I'm not a deer hunter but did watch the whole video at regular speed. Paul is much more agile than any of the deer hunters that i know. After many years of yoga I can get up and down from the ground easily. Some of these guys, not so easily. Nice going Paul!
Dirty Harry reference at 21:00?🤣🤣🤣
It had to be.
It certainly was
Loved it !

Wow, lucky you!!! Deer are never that close where I live. At least not during hunting season...
Scott Kenny It’s a blessing, no doubt. Thing is, around this time, I start to get calls from friends and acquaintances that I haven’t heard from for a year... 🤔
@@petarded8529 my reply would be, "where were you when I needed to replace some fence posts", but I'm a jerk like that...

Two worst sentences in hunting are "Grizzly ! RUN !!!" and "I think I hit it somewhere."
I really believe that Paul's videos should be required viewing for novice shooters. Videos like this one should be required in all hunter education classes. This is the guy who will show you the right way to do it. Thanks Paul!
