- Today, I'm talking through why I sold my Pocket 6k, why I didn't buy the Canon C70, Why I did buy the FX3, Canon vs Sony, and my kit that I bought. Enjoy!
There are a couple things that I forgot to mention -
CANON C70
- The C70 has that beautiful DGO sensor, the dynamic range is NUTS
C70 vs FX3
- They basically have the same codecs, IPB, H265, ALL-I. In ALL-I you get 4 channels of audio
- The FX3 can shoot external RAW, the C70 cannot
- The C70 is Netflix approved. The FX3 is not, but so is the R5. The FX6 is approved though.
A7S3 vs FX3
- The FX3 has a fan, The A7S3 does not

Not gonna lie to you man, those pocket 6k images look so much better than the Sony fx3 images. I’m sure the run and gun use of it is easier but man…that pocket 6k image is 🔥🔥🔥

Great video! I’ve really been considering going to the R5C from my A7SIII and 2 fully setup FS5M2’s. Once you’re really invested in what ecosystem it’s really difficult to switch over and the FX3 really blows away the R5C in low light. So I’m probably gonna pick up the FX3 as a way to move on from the FS5M2 cinema rigs that I use for corporate work.
Same here, Went from BMPCC 6K to FX3 and have never regretted it.

Stumbled across this as I started exploring the C70. I solely use the R5 because I needed a hybrid camera for my workflow and I feel like the R5 is a beast for it. When I’m ready for a second body I think I may sell the R5 and purchase two Sony bodies so I can keep my photo needs, but focus on having a video first A cam. Tbh this is the best comparison I’ve seen on these camera systems and aligns with my trajectory. Idk why people get married to one brand if they have the best solution for you. Subbed brother. 👊🏼👊🏼

Yep! there's so many great options out there- if you're doing it for work the last thing you care about is brand loyalty haha. I would always prefer having gear that makes my life easier + smoother on set
Great video! I had the same journey as you. Started with Sony A7iii and left because of the colour to get an R. I kept my E-mount glass but also own several RF and EF lenses. I like Canon for photography, but I don’t have confidence in Canon video in a hybrid body since there’s always some significant cripple: 4k crop on the R, overheating on the R5 and R6, now the high price on the R3. My solution will probably be to just get the FX3 for video and keep my R for photography. You didn’t mention it, but the FX3 shoots a more “cinematic” image than the R5 out of camera, and it shoots 10-bit without log, which are both factors for me. I’m just gonna wait until Q1 2022 to see how the R5C improves on the R5 then I’ll decide! Either way, I’ll stick around to see what you do with your FX3 😎

I'm running with the C70+R5 combo myself now, and love it.. but if I was in your position of only wanting to start with the B cam first, it honestly seems like a no-brainer to go Sony, bc yeah the R5 forces you into too many sacrifices. It's not reliable as an A cam, lack of CLog 2 (unless you wanna shoot raw, which then opens up a whole other world of issues), no XLRs.. it's annoying.
One of the major reasons I went Canon (was switching from Nikon at the time), is bc I wanted a great photo camera as part of my kit. The R5 is definitely the better hybrid for that (unless you go A1, but that's an entirely different price point), but since I've bought into Canon the amount of time I spend with photography has plummeted to basically zero anyway.
But even if I do start doing more photography, it's possible that an A1+FX3/A7S3 combo would have been better for me anyway. A1 wasn't announced at the time, so it wasn't a consideration, but if I were buying now there's a damn good chance I would have found myself with Sony too.
That all said, I do love my C70+R5 setup for now.. tho I am looking forward to Canon giving us a full frame cinema camera with RF mount hopefully soon.

Great content and quality! I do have to say i'm in the market for photo and video hybrid. The resolve/image on this video is great but it feels to still retain that green/yellow shift that I, personally, hate...it's pushing me to the C6

So for image: R6/r5 will prob only rock CLOG3, I much prefer CLOG2. It’s the flattest curve that canon offers, and I find the image to be more pleasing from it. The fx3 has SLOG3, which is Sonys version of CLOG2 (flattest, most dynamic range)
That played a huge part, as well as the function of the fx3. I shot a few videos with the R5, and it was weird and tricky to work with. I felt like it wasn’t meant to be a video camera, but was photo first.
The fx3 is video focused, which makes filming smoother. They also have the FX6 which I felt gives you more than what canon gives you with the c70. So knowing that the fx3 and FX6 could be a sick duo, I went with the fx3 as my travel camera. It’s my a camera now, and it crushes it. But eventually I’ll get a FX6 and use that primarily for work

Love your content dude. Your c70 videos have been a big reason why I've been on the fence with the fx6 vs c70. If money was no object and you were simply going with one A cam, which do you think you'd go with?
thank you! Yeah I think I would still go for the FX6. SDI, full frame, internal VND, form factor are some main reasons why. The C70 is still great, but I think for me, I would go for the fx6

@@lukecatena7567 Definitely consider the C70 - Better sensor than the FX6 (it has the DGO sensor from the C300 III with more dynamic range), XLR inputs on the camera instead of on the top handle, you can use EF and RF lenses, adapter/speedbooster give you an extra stop of light, and I think it has DCI 4K in all modes
Internal ND would be so clutch, but yeah, understandable.
Would’ve been insane right haha, I think I prefer having it small!

Nice video Sony came along way!!! I own c500mk2, c70 and R6 3 totally different price brackets but if I had to pick 1 c70 as the price best overall. C70 people forget 1. No top handles needed for Audio 2. ND'S Internal 3. Sd v60 for up to 60fps and v90 for 120fps which is way cheaper than cfexpress and sony type b Media and last canon has leasing program. In all Nd's, Media and more brings fx3 price closer to c70 than people realize. Either keep up great content.

yep all solid points! for the FX3, I'm using the same cards as I was on the c70, I never touch 120, and barely touch 60fps. The xlr's in handle would be annoying for most people who use gimbals, I don't so I don't mind, but internal ND is soooo nice haha. tough choice between the c70 / fx3
@@thomas.kovacik FX3 is a beast especially with addition of Scinetone and External Recording options so I think you made a great choice. I just love gear debate sometimes and comparison is always tough because of perspective. My c500 is not worth $10K more than C70 but if you compared it to RED Monstro or Alexa LF it's a bargain with 6K Raw full frame with all the bells and whistles. I've never had problem with C70 Swivel screen but heard about issues and the price difference between Fx6 allows for the purchase of focal reducer for full frame. In terms of small travel setup I got R6 because it's perfect Hybrid camera and $1400 savings can be used for Lens and Tascam for professional audio and that 5.1K sensor downsample 4K footage is solid especially with CLOG-3 that in IMO is better than SLOG-3 even though it's a flatter profile. It's such a great time for filmmakers because no matter what direction you got 4K 4:2:2 10bit is new NORMAL!!! I'm subscribed!

thanks! that's a great question- so I still think it depends. If you don't care about having a tiny travel camera, and want something that'll get the job done in so many fronts, the C70 is definitely the move. AF, internal ND, dog sensor, sd cards, 4k DCI, false color, battery life, etc. It's such an incredible camera. If I wanted to own one, for run n gun, corporate, wedding, commercial, that would be it. But for someone like me, the FX3 definitely is my dream travel camera, and it works so well as an A camera. If that C70 was around $4k it would be an absolute steal.
And to make that question more interesting, if the FX6 was 4k, I would say the same as I did for the C70. Just kinda depends on the nuances of canon vs sony! So many great cameras are out on the market, it's a dream come true haha
I’m not a black magic or canon user, but black magic has a certain look that I love. Canon colour is legit. Both have a creaminess, that stands out. Sony is a little sterile / overly sharp. It actually takes post production work to create that same vibe with Sony.
Definitely, there’s so many great cameras out it really just comes down to preference in workflow / image. Though I’ve had some people ask if my FX3 frames were c70. Side by side it’s easy to tell, but stand-alone, it’s difficult. Sony really stepped it up with these new cameras
@@thomas.kovacik I switch to Sony 5 years ago and have been decently happy. I just felt the FX6 and FX3 were let downs.. not for huge reasons, but for reasons so simple, they were infuriating. No audio input on the FX6 body was the biggest. I’m a run-gun shooter that relies heavily on quick access to audio while filming and in post production. This feature alone has me considering the C70. That way I have my NDs, Timecode, SDI, autofocus and audio inputs.

Though I currently use Canons (C70 & R5) and absolutely love them, i will say their sabotage of systems to save other models in their lineup is really annoying. I respect that for the most part Sony simply implements their latest technology into the latest body. Such as with how the Fx6 is basically better is some ways than the Fx9 simply because it has newer technology. They are also better with firmware updates. Meanwhile Canon are very slow with firmware updates and they don’t seem to allow their newer smaller bodies to completely takeover their other models.
And I agree I definitely feel like a company like Sony would notice me sooner than Canon ever would haha
love it! yeah it's so odd. yep great point on that fx6 vs fx9! Yeah it took them ages to roll out CLOG3 for the R5. Kinda weird. Yeah idk what's up with canon haha, they still make incredible, reliable cameras. I feel like Sony's team kinda knows what it takes to compete

Ok, now I need a follow up because I’m feeling the urge…
Duuuude it’s insane, I think it’s one of the best cameras for UA-camrs. Built in XLR in the handle, 10bit 422 slog3, AF. And it’s tiny, pairing this with vintage lenses is so nice for when I’m traveling and want to capture it. The FX6 is next, that’ll be my main camera for client work
I am seriously considering to but but its 2024 and rumors are that the SonyFX3Markii might be announced soon and im a canon owner but im seriously considering to switch to sony.

its so hard because right now I truthfully do a lot of photo and video, but im leaning towards more video because I want to get into other avenues! I work for the XFL right now so its a lot of sports. @@thomas.kovacik
I love my C70. It has the most cinematic looking Image of all cameras below 10K and thats the most important thing for me. The AF of the C70 is not great but ok, and the IBIS is not the best but very helpfull. But if you dont notice the difference in Image Quality and Dynamic Range between the C70 and other DSLRs or the FX3 the smaller cameras with better AF and IBIS could make sense for you.
You’ll be back to 6k lol. Nah get the camera that works for you. I have two 6k pros and R5. My combo for weddings.

Definitely not haha, I’ve shot with so many brands over the years. If Sony is making cameras that fit my needs of course I’m going to buy them. I’ve been one of the biggest advocates for the c70, and P6K. Not trying to start any brand wars, speaking from my personal experience. I’ve seen you around on the c70 forums, hope you’re enjoying it
