First blackmagic drops their 6k pro! Then this happens! Btw, out of everybody who made a video ok this camera I clicked yours because you actually make films, and you care more about the usability than the specs!
@Jerimiah Cook: Motivation yeah i know, definitely looking at getting that one! Even if i have a few sony lenses and this camera has autofocus, i think the blackmagic raw and a built in ND is a way better option
100% i love how he uses new cameras in depth for his projects in different ways ( not like other youtubers that collect cameras and don't film anything).
@Jerimiah Cook I own a 6k pro, but I am getting a fx3 for event work. I am tired of my back aching after schlepping my heavy rigged out BMPCC all day long.
Best FX3 hands-on by far. What separates you from all other UA-camrs is your work; You are an actual working, talented, pro cinematographer. Your sample footage looks like a movie clip!
🙏🏻
I agree, Mark actually puts his money where his mouth is with the incredible shots he gets, so we should all definitely be listening to his advice.
GREAT! I am gonna spend next 30 days watching reviews of FX3.
haha, me too
two things to this video, there are 3.5mm jack in the handle which makes the main jack on the camera inactive, second there is additional record button at the front which is handy to press record while right hand is holding the handle.
I literally drop everything to watch your videos when they drop. Thank you for always making incredible content!
Absolutely brilliant camera for professional video work.
I’ve been loving shooting with it, really is an impressive package. Very satisfied.
lost for words, all I can say is WOW! What a unit. I am a Panasonic bloke but this is just pulling me for sooooooo many reasons
AWESOME review. Thanks for the points on sensor, I learned something! Amazing shots as always. Thanks for all the stellar info
Best review i've seen on this one! Your test footage looks amazing man!!
I've got to say, when I read your community post about this video and how people complained(?) you didn't mention the A7SIII, I also thought it was strange to not do but now after seeing the video, it felt like a really fresh take to review the camera on its own merits with spending two thirds of the video comparing it to the A7SIII like most other youtubers done (which is totally fine and I understand why because they really are similar in a lot of ways).
Anyway good job and I really enjoyed the footage you manage to get out of that camera.
Mark, thanks so much for another vid of excellence! 🙏🏼💛
This camera is a fantastic camera, don't get me wrong, but it's just weird to be bringing this out with what they already have out, and like Gerald Undone said, it's not a true cinema camera as it doesn't have time code, built in nd filters, dci 4k, true 24fps or even shutter angle. I'm glad we have someone like Mark though at the end of the day actually using these cameras for their intended purposes rather than just vlogging with them and adding terrible Peter Mckinnon styled B Roll.
I ignore gelad Undone say. I listen poeple who had more film experience or education than pnly doing vididos for youtbe in their knowledge. Like mark you losten how he review difference than someone who they not for real know real film work. Like iimternal nd was never cinema it be vidido camera. Addition, I will film cinema a toy camera. it have nothng in do with specs howver poeple who act like they know cinema becuase they learn by youtbe think cinema be specs. Those channels who act like they know be worst of internet for they teach worng or false things next we get stupid movies.
@@Tuernah I have no idea what you're trying to say.. more than half of this isn't even spelled right and it doesn't make any sense.
@@RavenwolfPictures20 Dont judge me just for I speak in my different way. My stylemof laguage it be not our point.
@@Tuernah I'm not judging, I'm just saying it's impossible to understand.
@@RavenwolfPictures20 i understand it, basically what they're saying is there's a ton of youtubers with barely any real world film experience who only make UA-cam videos trying to judge what makes a good cinema camera and we should take their opinions with a grain of salt
i've watched like 20 fx3 review videos, this is the one that fully convinced me and had me wanting it the most great video man!!
🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
This channel deserves to blow up! But loving the little community of similar people responding in the comments. Props as always Mark! The amount of knowledge you share is ridiculous and i've had years of being a doc filmmaker. Seriously amazing!
Bien my bro! Vengase un día por Ecuador y nos pegamos un ceviche de pescado. Thank you for your service Mark.
Looking forward to the Documentary Course 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for this interesting review. In your experience, is the image quality better on the FX9 compared to the FX3 (and FX6 and a7S)? The fluidity of image with camera movement (panning/moving around) is similar to the a7S (which is not the camera that produces the best flowing image with continuous camera movement, fro what I perceive on yt)?
*Mark, fantastic review, brother, and your footage is amazing as always!! Much Love* ☮️
Sick rig. Love my a7siii! very similar camera.. both RULE. We are spoiled these days....still have my GH1. Crazy what 10 years in technology brings...exponential growth.
When that flat images came up and then your LUT kicked in I was like "oh baby" - Nice video dude. I'm not a Sony fan anymore but this camera and your review definitely makes me wanna go back to Sony
great review, thank you! Are you mostly making proxies when editing with your work? Or is your computer handling the files no problem? And what are you editing in usually?
Thanks for this, Mark. I just made my first video using the FX3 and really enjoyed it.
Maybe UA-cam compression is messing with the footage but 400,000 ISO actually looked useable to me! Obviously not ideal but totally useable in my opinion if you need to use it for some reason.
those sad moments between the videos :) are just EPIC haha keep killing it man ;) so close to 100k :D
Planning to upgrade hopefully next year coming from a7siii. Thank you for this vid Mark.
It’s a low light beauty, and the colors are awesome.
Hey Mark 🙋🏻♂️ I’m revisiting yours and Matti’s video about the FX3 and FX6 haha, I bought the BMPCC 6K Pro and I’m not in the position to replace it with the FX3, I’m looking forward to the switch, thanks for all your videos so far 👏🏼 so good to see 💪🏽
One good hack for the lack of record button on the handle - remap the button present on many sony lenses to activate recording. This is also a boon for shooting in manual when you want to keep your left hand on the lens. Hold top handle with right hand, lens with left, and with left thumb start / stop recording. Works perfectly.
Mark! Love the b-roll short! Can I ask which lenses you used to create this piece? Cheers!
Good stuff, man! Nice to see that Sony added the ability to timecode jam in their firmware update recently (via an additional cable), but what I wish it had is flat 24fps as well as shutter angle (and perhaps C4K)! Otherwise a solid little cam!
Hi Mark, really love your channel. one of the view which are about film, not video. I got myself a FX3 recently and just checked out your LUTs. They look great but would you be able to create those with separate contrast and color? Like two LUTs instead of one for each look? That would make them so much more flexible and usable in color grading. Really hard to find those options.
So good to get a review from you
it is not abut specks It is all abut crating film
Thanks
Excellent review, thanks mate. What is the mounting piece you used for your external monitor? Thanks!.
Great video, dude! What monitor would you recommend for this boy?
Super Video, Mark!
Looking into buying this camera or the BMPCC 6K Pro. I love the AF on this one, but idk..
What would you buy Mark?
I’m setting up my kit atm - what lighting would you recommend for this kind of set up?
I was thinking to start off with a Godox VL-150 or the FL-100 (flex) and a mini RGB - what do you think?
Song is classic! 🙌 John Givez and Ruslan. Nice!
This would be a must-buy for me if it had the built-in ND.
Dope !!! Loved the footage 🥳
Love the look of the camera. Is it possible to mount a top handle?
Hey mark great video, does it do 180 on the shutter?
Just got mine, Love it so far. Wish the would give it False colors, Shutter degree and maybe Raw internally to make it different than the A7sIII and make it a "cinema" camera. I replaced my P6K, which I loved, but I wanted a lighter set up.
🔥🔥🔥 love that Mark bone footage!!
Sony Fx 3 ❤️ wow cinéma camera
Thank you Mark ❤️🙏🙏🙏
Just got it! It has a third audio option via trs by the other xlr inputs.
I actually did replace my BM camera with the Sony FX3. I’ve always adored the color science and codecs that BM offers, but the FX3 just offers so many incredible ease of use features that you just can’t get anywhere else for the price. I wish it had shutter angle and false color, but otherwise I love everything about this beast.
What do you mean with shutter angle and false color?
It’s very interesting indeed. Loved the video
Great video. Do you turn off Ibis when shooting with the top handle on the FX3?
If I saw in the release properly, custom button 6 is also a record button. Maybe slightly less awkward than crossing your left hand under the top handle to hit record, especially if your left hand is already on the lens. I've gotta see more reviews and discussion about rolling shutter, interesting that you found it basically a non-issue. Some pan tests I've seen with the A7SIII and FX3 make it look fairly pronounced. Either way, built in ND's would've 100% sold me.
I currently shoot stills + video on a Nikon Z6, so definitely compromised a lot on the video side. So as a jumping off point for a non Sony user interested in video, it almost makes sense for me (cause I've already got a lovely little stills camera, no need for A7SIII EVF). But, factor in an E-mount lens that can take advantage of the autofocus of any of these cameras as well as a XLR mic, and I'm pretty close to an FX6 body.
Anyway, great video, you seemed stoked to use it, which maybe is half (or 1/4) of the battle. If it inspires you, then you can't really put a price on that (Z6 + cage + handle + Ninja V + external battery for only 4k30 10-bit 4:2:2 max is not super inspiring, especially as I want to get into more sports/workout shooting and would love to be able to shoot higher fps)
Great for video journalism and flying under the radar
Great review. Since I'm still waiting for the fx6 to ship (damn you pesky backorders!), I'll probably wait a year or so and pick this up used as a B-cam. I like the fact that Sony made a camera with a small form factor that you can use in normally awkward places. I'd feel more comfortable running with this camera than with a heavier fx6... that is, if they ever ship it to me! (Naw, I'm not bitter at all at the 2+ months I've waited. Not in the least bit.)
Great video. What mount were you using to attach your monitor to the end of the top handle? Thx.
Wait, when did not having an EVF make something a cinema camera? To me that's a major negative. I want an EVF, they are super useful and I shoot with them all the time on my cinema cameras. To me the lack of EVF makes this not a cinema camera. At the very least I think Sony should have included an EVF that you can mount on the hotshoe or on one of the 1/4-2 mounts all over the camera.
Also the lack of built in NDs is a turn off as well. At that price, I don't want to be dealing with NDs on my lenses anymore. Other than those two things I think it's cool.
AFAIK, cinematographers use EVFs aaaaall the time on the ARRIs, so I agree with ya there..!
Because most of the time people use an external evf or an external monitor. Last time I checked no arri or red camera has a built in viewfinder on the body
@@stevengonz yeah but Sony isn’t even offering an external EVF for this camera. Both ARRI and Red offer them for their cameras.
Yep. Silly stuff. There's no significant advantage of the camera over the A7SIII. An XLR unit could be bought for the A7SIII. There are lots of cages for the A7SIII, which are far more versatile than the screw holes on the FX3. Marketing is serious stuff and fools even clever people.
Hey Mark great review! I had a question about lens choices for this and the fx6. Do you intentionally use adapted sigma + canon lenses so you can use proper manual focus rather than the focus by wire on e mount lenses? Cheers!
Precisely. Fly by wire = 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 we have e mount sigma lenses also but I didn’t have the 50mm available that day
Wow, that video you shot hand's on with the FX3! Wow!!!
Thanks mate!!
Looks amazing.
Dope video as always. I always enjoy your perspective on camera systems. Also respect for the dream junkies track!
Side note I hear there is a camera manufacturer that has really nice 5 inch screens on the back of there cameras...just saying lol
Hey Mark, 3.5 input on the xlr handle can be fed a time code signal from a tentacle on two of the FX3’s cameras audio tracks and the XLR Chanel’s would still be available for a nice short phantom shotgun mic like the deity SMic2S or Sennheiser avx receivers
Yeah, it just means extra plug-ins in premiere no? It gets tricky when you’re working with multiple post production houses on bigger projects
I just switched over to Sony, I will say the first thing I noticed is that Nikon's built in screens are leaps and bounds better than my FX3. The Menu's are SOOO much better on my Nikon Z6 too. But let's see how his FX3 works out. I'm excited to put it to work on my next project.
The FX3 rolling shutter is there but I mostly see it during hand-held footage, specifically during the camera operator's foot steps or any small but sharp bumps to the camera. It's a very subtle jello cam effect, vs global shutter or film cameras that look rock solid even with no stabilization at all. I may be looking at it with a harder critical eye than other mirrorless cameras because of the "cinema" designation, because compared to other full frame mirrorless cameras in the same price range or lower, it's quite good! If anyone wants a faster readout speed but doesn't want to break the bank, go with a smaller sensor like m4/3, my ancient GH5 has near global shutter quality. Otherwise, I'm loving the FX3!
Damn, those shots are 🔥 dude!
are you a believer? noticed the awesome music choice and you’re one of my go tos with camera stuff!
Sweet review! Are you able to give us sample video footage like what did for the FX6 vs FX9 video?
Dream Junkies were a dope group. Thanks for the reminder!
That was amazing, I did test the A7SIII but still confused why would Sony call this a cine camera? at least wish they add Raw option or built-in Nd filter !!
Thanks Mark for a good review.
Hey man just scored one of these cameras for work my usual work horse is the canon c200 and have loved it .
Just getting my head around the menus is full on would love to see some kind of vid of how you set you’re one up for shooting run and gun
I’m new to small cameras
Video Cinema Camera First? I’m thinking it’s video-centric, 10 bit 422 raw,, A7S3 with a few 1/4-20 holes and a grey paint job. More like a stripped down budget FX-6, and “Bob’s your uncle?” B-roll camera, C- Camera, or pickup shots, might be okay for vlogging?
Great video, i was about to get the A7 S 3 but this has more.
Thanks for the content and nice polo shirt, by the way.
The John Givez track choice was very good.
What external monitor is being used @markbone? Not sure which exact model is it, any recommendations also for the first one to buy as a beginner?
Hey Mark, I was actually about to trade my cameras (a7rii) and lenses (the g-master squad) in for the komodo.. just for the Red Raw color science. But this contender came in and now I'm torn. Can you help me with this dilemma. Honest opinion, would you pick the FX3 over Red komodo? I wish Sony can send me one to test.
Sony has made several different versions of the A7Siii...FX6 and now the FX3. BRILLIANT!
Hi, Mark, HUGE fan!! May I ask: how did you mount a monitor to the XLR handle? Please lay down some wisdom. I get mine next week.
Thanks,
Gabe
Super nice review man! Thanks
thanks brithger
As many have pointed out, your statement at 9:05 is silly because your left hand was 0.5mm away from a second record button. This is clearly visible at 10:26.
For timecode, it's not too bad as you can mount an external "DSLR" type timecode box and connect it through input 3 on the top handle. Which brings me to my next point.
This is meant to be much more portable and versatile than the larger cameras like an FX6. One awesome feature that I use when filming events (like a wedding) is that I can set the FX3 on a tripod somewhere in the church, pull up my Imaging Edge Mobile app, and wirelessly monitor the video on my smart phone. Add that to the mobile functions of some external timecode boxes - boom, got yourself a some very useful "one-man band" wireless features.
My biggest complaint is why Sony cannot do a very simple change to the shutter display setting. I don't care if they lie to me, I just want to see it - Shutter Angle. I'll be happy if I'm shooting at 23.976 FPS and it tells me 1/50s is 180 degrees even though it's slightly off and isn't a true 180 degrees.
Would you pick it up over the a7siii though ?
Does the FX3 let you change shutter speed by decimal points like the A1 apparently can? Something I sooo wish I could do on my A7siii.
Great content my man! Subbed.
My only big hesitation with it is no internal variable ND. At nearly $4k, that makes it a no-go for me personally. If it was in the $2k-$3k range it'd be a no brainer add on, but I just don't see it justifying itself as much different from the A7Siii. Or during a pandemic justifying itself in my workflow. That said, if I could sell my FX9 + accessories for $12k, it'd be a no brainer to switch to an FX6 and FX3 setup from the FX9. But not sure in this market that's realistic right now.
In the same boat... Internal ND would've been the game changer... makes it a tough choice as an FX9 owner.
I definitely agree. On board ND is becoming more of a standard (thankfully) and there are a few options out there like blackmagic and z cam that are beginning to offer it. Maybe they can make a variable Nd adapter like canon has? Idk 4 grand for something with no proress or Nd is tough even given how great it is in low light.
$2500 BMPCC 6K PRO bro
@@xavieryt412 A great camera - however I'm in the sony system heavily, and I think E mount (full frame especially) is a much better overall system to be in than EF at this stage, and Autofocus matters to me in the work I do.
The only realistic review I've watched of the fx3 now (i watched a good amount).
Everyone else is just complaining that it isn't a "real" cinema camera because it doesn't have built in ND and shutter angle 🤦🏻♂️
yeah i dont get what the big deal is, i have my variable ND on my lens at all times, not that big of a deal. shutter angle they can easily add in firmware update
Can it record all the channels of audio at once or is it limited to stereo? I'm wondering if the XLRs for audio and the 3.5mm for timecode can all be working together.
Had no idea Owen Wilson was doing gear reviews. Awesome job Owen (Mark)! ;)
Wow! A cinema camera for the same price as an A7s iii. Thanks for this review Mark. Exciting times!
Except besides sony labeling it a cinema camera there isn't any real differences in IQ or USABILITY between this and the a7siii. And it's $400 more so not the same price
The FX3 is a brilliant camera, way more suitable and reliable for professional video work than the a7S III hands down.
@@ResizeFilms its a great camera but depending on your needs it may actually be less useful. I shoot mostly weddings and you'd be surprised how handy an evf is in those scenarios. Only nice thing about the fx3 for me is the mic module on top but to be honest audio is usually better recorded externally anyway
I switched from Sony to Canon about 4 years ago. Oh no, I might be switching back...😆 Awesome review!
What picture profile did you shoot this in bro? Or was it RAW? I know you usually shoot S-log but I thought that base ISO was 640. Thanks
Thinking about it tho. I'd rather have ND than image stabilisation....
Hey Mark! I had a question. What frame rates do you use to shoot speed ramping!!
Great video! Love the information and content you provide us! I have a random question Mark....Are the FX9 and FX6 mirrorless cameras as well?
Sorry if that's a silly question, but I'm curious and I couldn't find the answer. Keep up the great work and thanks again for the info you provide us!
I guess they might not be considered mirrorless because they’re not stills cameras but technically speaking they are “not mirrorless”
@@markbone haha copy that then! And I appreciate the reply🤝
Mark @12 MP, do you sense that sharpness takes a hit when compared to an A7 III @24 MP?
Which lens did you shoot that with,? Was its the 24-105mm and which LCD screen. Thanks in advance
Thanks for this! What magic arm do you have for the monitor at 6:48? i need something small like this
mark, would you go a7siii or this for a one and only video solution
Nice review Mark. What lens did you have on the FX3?
24 & 50
Yo I listen to "I Got the Juice" regularly. Didn't expect to hear it in one of your videos though.
I've really enjoyed following your channel the last ~6 months!
Classic! 2016 represent!
Did you shoot i t with the 24-105 lens you have on? F4 in that darkness?
What lens was used for filming with the fx3?
It seems to me like a sort of a 7 s iii.
OR? Am I missing something? Spec page on Sony looks like a 7 siii.
WOULD YOU GUYS BUY THIS or the 7 siii, for 90% video production?
Daaaaaaang! Also 2 minutes earlier than the Sony Announcement.
Great review
