  • After 56 years of waiting, Great Western Railway Castle locomotive no. 7029 Clun Castle finally returned to the East Coast Main Line departing from the famous, historic, and iconic London King's Cross. The last time that Clun Castle was on East Coast Main Line territory was back in 1967 on an Ian Allan special. A lot has certainly changed to the ECML since then, and as ever the Castle sounded superb. The event was an incredibly early start for the passengers on the tour as they left Birmingham at around 5 in the morning and didn't get to King's Cross until just before 10 later in the morning.
I decided to do just the one shot of the run and planned to get her at speed in a good location and came across a foot crossing at Offord Cluny between St Neots and Huntingdon. Clun Castle was following a stopping service in front and hoped that the engine would make a racket past the crossing. She was bang on time and sounding really nice and she even gave a nice whistle to the onlookers including myself at the crossing. The Castle sounded great and even though she was eased back, it was very slightly as she still powered past at speed towards Peterborough. Clun Castle's destination was Lincoln, I thought about doing the return leg as well, but I decided not to bother and head home.
I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to leave a like, comment and subscribe for more Steam action from Full Steam Ahead.
