A young mexican smuggler and a little girl travel illegally on top of a cargo train, called La Bestia, to get to the USA. An injury transforms his perception of the journey.

CONTEX (Copied from wikipedia) : "El tren de la muerte ("The Death Train") refers to a network of Mexican freight trains that are utilized by U.S.-bound migrants to more quickly traverse the length of Mexico, also known as La Bestia ("The Beast") and El tren de los desconocidos ("The train of the unknowns"). It is estimated that yearly between 400,000 and 500,000 migrants, the majority of whom are from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, ride atop these trains in the effort to reach the United States. Although these trains (which transport products and materials including corn, cement, and minerals) are regarded as a free form of travel that allows migrants to avoid Mexico's numerous immigration checkpoints and 48 detention centers, the risks are high and many riders are left with life-altering injuries that limit their capacity to work."
In some villages near the train tracks, people throw food and water on the trains to help the migrants, that's what we see at 2:50.

I felt strange to hear that it was in Spanish (the language I speak) and not in English or French (as I get used to these animations). I love how that situation unfolds, and the animation as always does not disappoint me. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate that song!?. Muy chido este corto animado. ¡¡¡Felicidades todos!!!

I really love the animation, this is something that happens everyday in "La Bestia" is people trying to have a better life but they take many risks and also their life (Sorry if I don't write correctly). Me encantó, muy buena animación... como siempre 💗

i think this short should not be only published here but to the wider public,an extremely touching tale and the students should be proud of themselves to reach this high of skills that it almost seems like a feature flim! i think calarts should be on the lookout!

I'm Mexican and had to cross the border, luckily I didn't had to go on La Bestia, I didn't knew what it was until I was on the US and met someone who's dad had been on it, it's awful, it's sad and the whole journey makes me respect the immigrants, my journey was dangerous but not to the extent of theirs. Thank you for portraying this part of Mexico, of the immigration, Las Patronas, I love this clip❤️

Thank you for showing how dangerous it can be just to find a new home. Alot of people do not understand the ultimate risk and expense to trying to get over to the states and find a better life. My parents sacrifice everything and I mean everything to get a better opportunity and to get far away from the dangers (like the gangs,kidnappings, loan sharks etc.) from there home. They came here to find a better job, home and life for themselves and their future children. It was not easy then and not easy now. This animation really hit hard for me but I thank you for this animation. Thank you.

Soy mexicana, y cuando vamos en los primeros años de la escuela nos enseñan sobre la historia de ese tren y que tipo de personas viajan en el, incluso mucha gente les ayudan a viajar dándoles comida, no puedo decir que lo que vive esa gente es bonito, pero es increíble ver lo que hace la gente para tener una buena vida..

Desde que el corto inició y escuché la voz de la niña en español empecé a llorar.
Nunca antes había visto una animación de Gobelins en español hasta ahora. Gracias por compartir esta triste, pero verdadera realidad.

For how i see it, The train that falling apart with flesh represent his infected wound (gangrene/tetanus as his skin turns green and he turn weak?). He was already very weak but he sense something wrong with the train, knowing 100% he wont survive (of whatever happen to the train as well as his infection) he let the girl take the money he was paid to bring her to America, then swing her away from the train, the train promptly derailed and crashed. Idk of the news but it sort of imply she is the sole survivor, and she settled there. (edit: seems like she went back down the track a bit and visit/help the lady who toss packed food onto passing train for smugglers... how sweet. but ultimately still within mexico)
The pacing of the animation shows you something bad is gonna happen from miles away but when the climax happens it still holds my entire attention. Really amazing story and animation.
I find it pretty interesting after 3 times rewatching, the initial scene he got hurt (it was from the ladder they climb to get to the top) wasnt really shown/focus on screen, the wound only get more attention when it start to become infected, and the girl is really young only know you should disinfect it, the man didnt let the little girl help him to at least cover it up until it has been days his infection is severe. Sounds like a "shouldn't ignore small cuts and make sure to take care of it" message to me.

The money was to give her another chance to get her there, there are other ways like paying a truck to get past or simply just trying to cross the border on foot. The ending doesn't show if she got there or not, so I can't tell if she went back or continued to to travel to United States

I kinda cried when i saw the man gets annoyed at 2:04. It reminds me so much about my dad. We are not really close but i know he is the man who refuses to expose himself to the kindness from others.

I mean, I'm used to a high standard with Gobelins films, but this... This really struck a chord with me, it's such an important subject, it is so we'll done and it messed me up
Mucha gente trata de esconder este México "Feo" y engrandecer el de los grandes paisajes y destinos turísticos, pero el sol no se puede tapar con un dedo y el problema de la migración afecta a México y a nuestros amigos latinoamericanos mucho más de lo que se quiere reconocer.
Yo estoy de acuerdo contigo. A pesar de tener semejanzas como los europeos. Nadie puede negar el racismo y la corrupción por culpa de Benito Juárez y los horrores tras la Nueva España. Hay que reconocer que Porfirio Díaz a hecho avance a pesar de sus acciones cuestionables. Jamás tengo desapercibido lo que es México en general.

Yo lo veo al revés, el mundo habla mucho más de las cosas malas de México que de los paisajes bonitos y las cosas buenas que se hacen aquí.
Las patronas y su increíble labor, que animación tan buena.
This is brilliant, a reminder and metaphor for the dangerous journey hundreds of thousands of immigrants make in the hope of a better life and how it can devour them.
Lo genial es que el diseño de Guayaba ya te sugiere una historia implícita: Quizás perdió su brazo cuando el fue un simple pasajero y ya no pudo pensar en trabajar en EEUU, así que decidió usar su experiencia acumulada para ganar dinero de la forma que vemos (aunque sé que lo más fácil fuera que lo perdiera mientras transportaba a alguien).
No.parece de los que son simplemente codiciosos, así que seguro que la razón por la que quería el dinero era muy buena e interesante.
If he was just greedy he never would have helped the kid. There’s not exactly checks and balances in place to make sure the kid gets where they’re meant to go. But the parents put their faith in him and he kept the kid alive even when he couldn’t keep himself alive. He even threw the kid off the train to protect her from being discovered and let her take the money to have a better chance at living.
This short was really interesting, especially with the ongoing degradation of the coyotes' reality as his wound gets infected. I really liked the ending, how the little girl never made it to America but found a happiness helping the other migrants.
Solo los latinoamericanos entendemos el dolor de esa realidad, y mas cuando eres pariente de aquellas personas que jamás vuelves a ver.

I really enjoy that about the animations these students have been coming up with lately, where the film ends on a note that's gripping your emotions by the heartstrings. I know a part of me wanted to cry at the sight of the girl smiling in the doodles at the end.
Hace mucho que sigo Gobelins... Y creo que es la primera vez que veo un corto en español (puede que exista alguno pero si es así no lo recuerdo) El caso es que me ha dejado de una pieza. Es impactante y hermoso a la vez... su banda sonora, la animación es bestial, así como su historia. Es sólo un caso entre millones, pero te llega a lo profundo del alma y te la deja lastimada. Maravilloso trabajo y muchas felicidades al grupo que lo llevó a cabo. Es una pasada!!

This was beautiful. I love the expressions of the characters. They have these little movements in their faces that I haven’t seen in animation for a long time.

Soy Mexicana, jamás he tenido la necesidad de buscar una oportunidad de la manera en que la hacen los paisanos que se van al otro lado; pero siento que este corto lo retrata muy bien, me llego bastante y creo que es una de las mejores formas de representar una realidad tan densa

This is a very beautiful Mexican short film, the animation is incredible and very colorful 😃
I'm a substitute art teacher at a public school in NYC for the past 4 months now. The school is in a low income neighborhood, surrounded by public housing and family shelters. I'm happy to be here because my family was in a shelter across the street from the school when I was still a teenager. Anyway, the school is very diverse, there are Black Americans like me, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, South Americans, kids from Honduras, Africa, Yemen, and even a few Asians and many of the students have emotional support needs, or have some learning disability. I teach Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th-8th and two 1to 1 special needs classes. The kids love watching this and it's a great way to relate to many of them and to inform and remind them of the hardships that their parents, grandparents, family members or even friends may have come here. It is sad at times but it inspires hope and I'm the least patriotic person I know. This video almost makes me cry every single time. Thank you to to the creators and to Gobelins for sharing this! We need more!!

Beautifully made. I was so emotionally invested. Every frame shows dedication and hard work. Incredible sound design and animation. Proud of you Alfredo and team. You make us all so proud.
I had the opportunity to go to US and Canada to learn English, and being an immigrant feels weird. The pain of leaving your home for new opportunities, feeling that you don't belong, that maybe it was a bad decision. But watching this, makes me feel that I'm not alone.
Currently I'm in my hometown but I still I don't know if I will stay or try to reach my dreams in another place.
I sure didn't came here to be dragged by emotions this hard but that's what I got. Wonderful film!
This is one of the best short films I have seen. I am just truly amazed by the effort that you have put on. Amazing animatings, music and cinematography, etc. Everything goes really well together and I really really enjoyed it. I just can't belive this is done by a student, such a professional level.
This is so powerful in so many ways, it is a fusion between how raw and how surreal it is to look for better opportunities, it broke my heart and then somehow it got back together again. Thank you for telling this kind of stories.

Precioso detalle de incluir en el 2:49 y en los créditos finales a "Las Patronas" de Amatlán de los Reyes, Veracruz. Son mujeres que en la vida real ayudan a los viajeros que van montados en "La Bestia" aventándoles comida y agua, que la pequeña viajerita viva al final con ellas y participe dando comida es una bella manera de representar el agradecimiento que tiene con Guayaba.

La animación increíble por lo bien desarrollada, atrapa. El final poco creíble. Lupe siendo tan frágil se salva de la caída, del tren. Creo que más bien "si muere" se salva de su probable destino en un país extraño. Felicidades

Definitely my favourite Gobelins film. Sweet, heartfelt, yet so sad and leaves you with almost a sense of longing. The character development of the man was beautiful as well. You think in the beginning he was in it just for the money but you later see how deeply he cares for the girl, like a father-daughter relationship.
This is a fact, the art style... is amazing!

I am from Romania so I will never understand this situation, and I actually didn't even know about "La Bestia" until I saw this short. I have a lot of respect for those who cross the border. It takes enough courage to just move to another country in general, but when the journey is dangerous (especially THIS dangerous), holy shit, you have to have a lot of guts to do it.
