      Wish I could. Don't have access to Max anymore. Somebody from Autodesk actually contacted me and offered to give me free access to the software so I could make more videos, but about halfway through the process I just got a bunch of dead air :(
      Max is just so expensive, I can't justify spending the money just to make tutorials. Getting a license and making more videos is one of my Patreon goals, but it's far off

    You helped me more with this 15 minute video than my professor at uni during almost 3 months. He doesn't even know the shortcuts...

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  5 років тому

      I could understand if he just didn't teach the shortcuts, but if he truly didn't know them then I would doubt he has ever professionally worked in the software (which is scary if he is teaching a Uni class).
      Other than that, I'm glad I could help :)

    • @ContasYT
      @ContasYT 5 років тому

      @@ZachHixsonTutorials He is really bad at explaining stuff, he always expects you to know everything. The shortcuts I am talking about are the camera ones, he always uses the buttons on the bottom right corner to move the camera. My colleges think he knows what hes doing but he probably used a different program before. He indeed does amazing models in just a couple of minutes , so I suppose he knows what he is doing.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  5 років тому

      @@ContasYT Yeah, sometimes teachers come from different backgrounds and when they become a professor they are suddenly forced to teach outside their comfort zone. I've had a few fantastic teachers that found themselves in similar situations.

    • @ContasYT
      @ContasYT 5 років тому

      @@ZachHixsonTutorials Honestly from someone like me who came from a different country without any background in 3D modeling, it has been a real pain to deal with his personality and the way he talks to everyone.

      @ZachHixsonTutorials  5 років тому +1

      @@ContasYT Yeah, that's just Uni man. In a similar class myself where the teacher is probably the worst I've ever had by far, but not really much you can do.
      On the right path tho, looking elsewhere and teaching yourself what they can't. All you can really do at this point I guess

    Blender definitely has that feature, just press tab to go into the edit mode, then you can select vertices and change the width and such.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому

      Not exactly what I meant, but the cube was a bad example. I was referring to more complex shapes such as toruses, stairs, UV/Icospheres (changing the segments after the fact), and similar objects, where it's more difficult to change things later on.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому +1

      Software like 3DS max, Maya, Modo, C4D, and Blender are great for modeling pretty much anything you can imagine!
      The only situation in which one of these programs would not work would be if you needed something physically accurate to the real world with very precise measurements like 3D printing parts, or designing something for physical manufacturing, instead I would recommend software like Autodesk Inventor, or SolidWorkds

    Hey nice tut. but for the record blender totally does have the features you mentioned around 4:30. If you have an object (Say a cube) press 'n' to open the transform panel then you can change the objects dimensions under the dimensions subheading.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому

      +Ducenarius I already had this discussion with somebody else. Please correct me if I am wrong (I really wish I was wrong), but while you can technically edit things like width and scale, what I was mainly focused on was other parameters like subdivisions, and special controls such as stair count. I admit, immediately using a cube to demonstrate this was not the best idea lol, but I tried to also demonstrate it on the stairs and torus knot.

      +Zach Hixson i'm switching to 3ds from blender.. mainly because i'm autocad user and i don't like blender's "special" logic regarding navigation and selection.. also python..
      but from what i have seen, you can do non destructive modifications in blender using modifiers..
      but yeah.. 3ds works better for me..

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому

      anis shmith it makes sense, so much about 3D modeling is a feel thing, but what's wrong with blender using python? I've been a blender user for close to 6 years now and have never come across the need to use it. (I have used it, but never NEEDED to).

  • @JohnSmith-kq5px
    @JohnSmith-kq5px 8 років тому +10

    4:08 is incorrect. I have used Blender for years and it has always been perfectly capable of changing object dimensions once the object has been created. There is no such thing as objects being automatically 'locked' to dimensions. It is normally one of the first things taught in tutorials. I understand if you personally think that 3ds max is better than Blender, but it isn't right to criticise a donation-based foundation of things that are completely untrue. You can't expect free and open source software to match up to a $1500 piece of software made by many highly trained and skilled people.

    • @keketcat
      @keketcat 7 років тому +3

      Not exactly, with blender you can still control scale and rotation (Like you said) but if you where to place down an object like a torus, click off, move it around, then click back on and try to change the number of loops etc you'd be unable to with the N menu. You'd still be able to control scale and rotation sure.
      Objects within 3ds stay 'editable' until you click 'make mesh' or something along those lines.

    • @jonny11995
      @jonny11995 7 років тому

      I think this is talking about a number of vertices to an object or the dimensions of an object All I can think of is if you create a circle and say that you want it to be created from 30 points it will lock the object to this if you un-select the object. Otherwise, it might be mentioning the fact blender only stretches the object and its faces through scaling instead of adding new faces while changing the dimension of the shape.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  7 років тому +1

      Exactly, I used a horrible example in the video, should have done it for the steps or the torus knot instead of a dumb cube :/

    • @maskymate8086
      @maskymate8086 5 років тому

      @@hydraulichydra8363 blender user here also. We can't decide which program is the best but back to the main topic, in Blender if you click off the torus then some of the torus's properties won't be editable anymore. Still, blender fit me better than 3ds max. But who knows right? Many even learn Ps and Maya Blender 3DS Max and C4D at once for their final product so here I am today! Just stop arguing about "which is the best" like what those kids did with Fortnite and Pubg, just pls, be mature a little bit.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  7 років тому +4

      lol, it came from when I used to share a family computer. As a programmer I programmed a few... interesting programs that I didn't want anyone to accidentally run and screw up our computer. Overtime it just kind of became the folder where I stuff all my programming projects, and when I got my own computer, I just copied it over.
      There are actually 4 sub folders "Folder of Death" > "Do not Open!!!" > "Seriously, I swear it's not porn" > "Just ask me and Ill show you" > and "Don't Click On anything!" XD

    Thank you. I have a basic question, is there a way to type in parameters like lenght, height etc. for an object ( in this case a box) before or while creating an object? Otherwise it seems like a double work for me, first, I have to create an object and then edit dimensions?

    So i have 4D, Maya, 3ds and Hudini. What one i should use. My personal reason for all those programs is to choose between movie 3D scene creation and game makeing for future. But now i would like to mostly Make Realistlic wall destruction. Explosions, House collapses, plane crashes and etc. What can you advise about that?

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому

      If you are doing a lot of simulation effects, definitely go Houdini.
      Pretty much all 3D software can achieve realistic models, but Houdini is the only one out of all of those that comes with a ton of great simulation tools for what you want (however while the Mantra render is good, I would still get another renderer like Vray later on).
      It's also tons cheaper than any of the other software. Free for learning (some restrictions), $75 for educational (less restrictions, but still restrictive), and $299 for indie licence (fully featured, but only if you make less than $100k a year using the software).

    I got a question - I know that Cinema 4D, when you're rotating an object, you can hold Shift, which makes the object rotate every 10 degrees ( 10,20,30,ect.) Is there a similar hotkey in Max?

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 років тому

      In 3ds max it is called "Angle snap" and it is a toggle button on the top of the screen (looks like a red magnet with an angle next to it).
      You can also turn it on and off by pressing "A" by default, as well as right-clicking on the button to set the snap settings

    With blender you are fully capable of editing any shape or mesh you create. At no point does it become "locked"

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  5 років тому

      Perhaps I didn't phrase it as clearly as I should have. In 3DS Max a primitive such as a torus can be adjusted parematically until it is converted to a mesh. In Blender such an object can only be adjusted until it is deselected or moved, in which case it is converted to a mesh and no longer adjustable

      +Zach Hixson I agree, as I said in another comment, personally I think they both have their good and bad features, I tend to swap between them depending on what I want from a project because there are some things Blender does really well and there are some things Max does well. Also, although most companies will look for experience and qualifications with Max, there's quite a few companies switching over to modified versions of Blender now, especially in the advertising market, there's a lot of TV advert animations out there that were done in Blender now.
