  • Welcome to Archinest! In this video, we’ll explore a home project that prioritizes seamless integration with its surroundings, designed by Stephenson Design Collective. Situated in a stunning location with views of the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and Olympic Mountains, this home is a shining example of design that takes sustainability and experience into account.
The project began with a deep understanding of the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The primary focus was to minimize environmental impact while creating a structure that blends into the landscape. Design inspiration was drawn from the film “Minka” and Marc Cohen’s song “Olanna,” with the goal of creating an atmosphere similar to those works.
We’ll discuss how a separate studio provides an isolated musical experience and a small metal workshop serves as an escape for the homeowners. The home’s simple exterior with natural steel and black cedar is designed to blend in with its surroundings.
Additionally, the home prioritizes sustainability with radiant concrete floors that double as thermal mass and Zola windows that provide optimal natural light and cross-ventilation. A “nest” space behind the master suite offers protection from the summer heat, while a fireplace heating system spreads warmth throughout the home.
Watch this video to see how thoughtful design can create a home that blends with nature and meets both functional and emotional needs. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more interesting architectural content from Archinest. Leave your comments and thoughts on this project below!
