The Doomed Cleveland Balloonfest of '86

- In September 1986, the city of Cleveland attempted to set a special record: the simultaneous launch of 1.5 million balloons. But fate intervened, and the result was both crazier and more tragic than anyone could have imagined. Read more: www.theatlantic.com/video/ind...

@@Jack-jw2no Come on what?
The classic line "Just because we can, doesn't mean we should" fits well here.
I love how the guy says, "It is a happening city, we are on the move, it's no longer the butt of jokes" and because of this, Cleveland became even more of a butt of jokes. The wife of one of the fishermen ended up suing the United Way of Cleveland and the company that organized the balloon release for $3.2 million, and later settled on undisclosed terms. The balloons also landed on someone's pasture and spooked a farmer's Arabian horses which led to the horses having permanent injuries. The farmer sued United Way of Cleveland as well for 100K in damages and settled on undisclosed terms.
The balloons even caused traffic collisions! Drivers swerved to avoid the slow-motion blizzards of the balloons or took their eyes off the road to gawk at the overhead spectacle. Motorists on the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway ran into fences and each other before the roadway was shut down. A bulldozer was actually needed to help clear away all the balloons!
You have more information than the video, thanks!
I was imagining it caused a lot of vehicle crashes

This was a fundraiser for United Way but ended up costing them more than they got, plus two lawsuits, one for the fishermen and one for injured horses who got spooked. They actually thought that "the balloons would reach an altitude where they popped and disintegrated.".
Burke Lakefront Airport had to shut down as well as Cleveland Memorial Shoreway because of accidents.
Guinness did actually recognize it in 1988 but they took it out after that because of the huge negative impact it had and stopped accepting that type of world records.

My family and I lived in Hamilton, Ontario and in those days we would have had no idea about the balloon launch in Cleveland. We did see several balloons in the sky over our city but really thought nothing of it. We then heard on the local radio news that people were reporting seeing balloons, and it was mentioned about the balloons from the launch making their way to Canada.

"There is no mistake on the lake anymore" with this event ironically being the worst mistake the city has ever made, that is quite fitting to say. It's a shame because you could feel the community coming together for this so to turn into a disaster is so ironic but fittingly Cleveland. Though considering this is 1986 and happened a few months after Chernobyl, they probably figured it wasn't the worst thing to happen that year. But 5:46 isn't true. The 1988 copy of the Guinness Book of World Records DID recognize Balloonfest '86 as a world record. However, because of the effects of what the event caused, it no longer measures events that are harmful to the environment.
Also...the anchor at 0:38 does realize that winds are named from where they come, right? In other words, if you have a northerly wind, the balloons would move to the south. To move to the north, you need a southerly wind. So what happened was a southerly wind. And, at 5:49, does the reporter think the balloons that landed on the lake just evaporated? Smh

@FitTallGayBlond i see your point, but its a bit more complex than that. Without america in the WW2, its not a sure bet that japan and germany would have been put back in their place, and they were quite brutal in taking what they wanted. After the war, i think it is a sure bet that stalin would have rolled over a destroyed europe like a steam roller, but american military power kept that from happening. Britain was too weak at that point to stop it. The powerful in america have done some dirty deeds for sure that must be noted, but america also kept the oceans open for free trade, thats a been a major gift to the world. America will always be loved and hated, as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. As for canada, a small population with a large chunk of the planet, someone would show up at some point with some big guns and try to take it. But no one will even try it since they know they would be fried extra crispy in minutes by the american military.
@FitTallGayBlond yes and then at some point america would have to swoop in and save britain, as always

Outside of stars and radioactive decay, there's really no way to make helium. Producing any significant amount of helium on earth would take millions of years.
So. Unless you happen to be one of those giant nuclear fusion reactors we call stars, you're not going to be making your own helium any time soon.
Nobody cares. Plus this was 30 years ago. All that helium migrated up to the upper reaches of the atmosphere and diffused out into space. I've worried about the depletion of all the helium, but fools don't understand and continue to use it for birthday balloons and fritter it away. Thousands of dollars in helium are lost each time an MRI machine needs to be quenched when some fool allows a ferrous material to get into the magnetic field and it flies into the machine.
The US government used to have a massive supply of helium, but sold it all off cheap in the 90's. From what I understand it can only be commercially sourced from certain caves and oil and gas fields.

People: This millennial generation is the generation that is going to screw this planet up.
Cleveland 1986: **Nervous Sweating** *Yeah ikr lmao*
@Christina Reynolds Cuz it's easy to blame a generation for your own sins. Basically, past generations project themselves on others. So they accuse millenials of being lazy, screwing the world, etc while they did it. Simply narcissistic behavior. All generations are. Millenials will blame the next generation for their own sins, etc.
@Christina Reynolds True. It is a way for them to feel superior over a generation... the same way the generation of their parents felt superior over them. They repeat the same toxic pattern and create division simply based on the age of the individuals.
Lies. The oldest millennial has only been a tax-paying adult for at most 21 years. It’s impossible for them to have caused that much damage. Pop culture garbage, yes...actual garbage, no!
I've never heard anyone say millennials are going to screw up the Earth. Either people insist it's not happening and never will, or they blame the Boomers. (Gen X apparently doesn't exist, but in this case I'm not sorry we've been forgotten.)
Without out the Yhea ikr lmao the joke would've been better
They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.
It was beautiful , it inspired children for life.
K K... I see what you did there.

"at least they are no longer posing a threat to fish and wildlife, and are not littering the lake."
