    I have some backseat time in our Canadian version as a young pup just joining the Airforce around early 80’s. Flew as a target for our F101 Voodoos to intercept. As I watched you building my eyes went to that “well used” square of foam on your table, guessing it would speak of countless models you have put together while the T-Bird waited. Ohhhhh, watched your tips on the F18 80mm and will do my setup as per. I just got my FMS version yesterday shipped from China. I live retired in Thailand and look forward to flying it soon. Regards in Cali.

    What a great video. You did a great job showing people how to turn a PNP model into a great looking scale model and also you included a lot of pointers on material you used to do that.
    Thanks for sharing!!!

      What in the heck is a PNP model? Isn't this just a molded foam ARF?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Місяць тому

      It started out that way, yes. PNP just simply means plug ‘n play where it just requires adding a receiver to go fly.

    Chris, I would love to see a series that does an ultra-deep-dive into your refinishing process. A few years back I used your technique and materials an ended up with a plane that, while beautiful, was so heavy it couldn’t take off. Clearly, I was doing something wrong. The Tomcat refinish videos were great, but they still lacked a bit of detail on number of coats, amount of filler, that sort of thing. Thanks!

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Місяць тому +1

      What model was it? Were you flying from grass by chance? Truth be told, I’ve found most of the models I’ve done this with tend to fly better actually, so I’m a bit surprised by what you’re saying as that has never been my experience. I don’t necessarily have a set number on things, I just tend to do what’s needed to get the finish I’m looking for. So, filler as needed to get it filled, poly coats is between 3-6 and then primer as needed sanding between coats to get the desired smoothness. I have been doing some exclusive channel members content that does dive deeper into this stuff, so maybe that might help? I do at least one masterclass video per month as a part of that. One of the recent ones talked about finish materials, etc on this T33 and I plan to talk more about the refinish and paint process in the next. Btw, have you seen my book? I talk a lot about it in there too: www.artofscalemodeling.com

    I watch a lot of your stuff even receive your emails and once got a copy or preview of your refinishing book - so I don’t deserve an answer here but I’m trying to recall what primer you use? I have a similar process to yours but I procrastinate - bad ADHD, when I persevere I get incredible results but have you ever worked on a really beat up model? I’m struggling with an L39 that is quite rough - I find once there’s damage that’s gone into the foam material it’s very tricky to finish nicely. Finishing virgin foam is a dream

    I was wondering if you ever use microballoons with epoxy or paint when prepping a foamy for polycrylic? I just got my Avios Super Tacano and am starting to prep it. I don’t know if I just got a less than stellar quality one but I have a lot of voids to fill. I don’t want to do a complete repaint.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  24 дні тому

      I just use the sherwinn williams spackle for filling damage or imperfections and then coat it with a couple coats of poly before primer/paint. It’s really fine, so will give you a nice surface for paint, especially once sealed.

    alittle tip next time put some some talcum powder in the minwax make it like a slurry,,sort of thick but will still drip a little its an ol modelers trick used on balsa also but works good on foam
    l did this on my freewing al37 converted to a tanker and it work good you can also use in on lite fiberglass cloth,sands good.

    Thanks for the great tutorial Geek Master 👍 A couple of questions. I couldn’t see the brand of primer your using and what grit do you sand with between coats ? Would that Rustoleum clear be a good finish to spray over all foam unpainted aircraft as a protectant/ sealer ?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  Місяць тому

      I’m using duplicolor filler primer and sanding with 180 grit for most things. The rustoleum clear is a clear coat only meant for sealing paint, etc. so, I’m not sure spraying it over foam bare foam will do much truthfully. Are you looking for something to help with paint adhesion on bare foam?

    • @mikenowland2739
      @mikenowland2739 Місяць тому

      @@Thercgeek I use Minwax on my foam planes as a surface finish to give some protection from wear and tear and to seal in the decals. It is so expensive here in Australia at $70 a can. I can buy Rustoleum for $17. I was looking for a cheaper option to do the same job.
