Hey. There was a Blue Angels show cancelled due to weather concerns on April 14, 2018. Do you have any idea how common that is? I'm referring to a show, not practice runs or flyovers. I've tried finding one easy place for a history of cancellations but can't. I went to their FB page and spent way too much time trying to scroll, scroll, scroll. Finally got to June 2017 posts. Searched with ctrl+f for "cancel" and there was only the April 14, 2018 cancellation. A lot of cancelled Pensacola flyovers and some practices in other cities, but it was the only show cancelled due to weather. Thank you for any help.
It's not uncommon. The team has several routines that they can fly depending on the cloud ceiling/visibility conditions, but they have strict weather minimums that must be maintained for them to perform even the most minimal routine, called a 'flat show'. Other performers have different minimums and might be able to perform even when the Blues can't. It'd be pretty hard to record all of the cancellations; there are probably a dozen a year at least.
I looked at their Twitter feed and from the beginning of 2016 thru April 15, 2018 there were only 2 show days that were cancelled, the one in Tuscaloosa and one in Sacramento on 10-01-2016. They will cancel practices and also "flyovers" in Pensacola but rarely a show day. I know nothing about "flat shows", but as far them saying today's show is cancelled, only saw it twice in a little over two years. Again, based on weather. Maybe they used a word other than "cancel", I don't know. I used ctrl+f and searched the 2+ yrs of feed.
What an amazing ride!! So glad there wasn't any tacky music played over the clip - it's nice just to hear the tranquil sound of the world going by (very fast ;-) )
This is real ... And this is an awesome video. The military has clearance to fly close to the beach / buildings during airshows. This is each year in august in Chicago, weather permitting.
Speaking strictly about the pilot, I don't mean to offend anybody with sacrilege, but that must be a godlike sensation to control all that power, to literally own the sky that way. I am in awe. Excellent video, thanks for posting !
Brilliant on board footage. Being from over the pond east side my favourite is the Typhoon but great flying and a great plane in the Super Hornet. Thanks for posting, Dave.
I'm not sure what you mean, but a cone of water vapor can form as the aircraft approaches Mach 1. Jets never intentionally break the sound barrier except over the ocean and in training ranges because of the very loud 'sonic boom' that supersonic speed produces. The vapor you see forms in low pressure areas of airflow, and most often occurs when the aircraft pulls through a high G maneuver. The cone of vapor appears between two shock waves that form at high speed. It shows up more in humid air.
Thanks for this. I love watching the Air & Water show every year. Getting to ride along in one of the AWS jets is a life long dream, watching this is probably as close as I will ever get.
Love Love Love the Super Hornets! I was absolutely thrilled to watch these amazing jets at the Chicago Air an water show. We were eagerly looking east ward across lake Michigan to catch a glimpse of these beautiful planes and they were mere specs on the horizon and man did they ever make a grand entry!!!! we were coming out of a tunnel that went under the lake shore drive and one of them passed us...and the sonic boom caught us about 5 seconds later and we all hit the ground. Amazing Super Jets!
Well, I'm not an A.E. but have been studying aviation for over 15 years, did 6 in the Airforce, have my A&P and work at LM Aero. That being said, I totally agree with your description (heck I wanna add to it, but this is your show), and let me say its nice to see someone who has the credentials NOT bash or belittle/downplay people who don't.
Fair enough if you want to get technical, water vapor is just a sufficiently correct yet simpler answer since most people think it's draining fuel or something like that (which does happen to Super Hornets during certain negative G maneuvers). The condensation comes from the water vapor already in the air, hence it is known as vapor to the pilots and photographers.
I'm not sure what else you can call it....it's the same thing as a cloud essentially. I'm currently doing a mix of airshow/aviation photography with AirshowStuff and doing some work at a small company that produces kits for homebuilt aircraft.
A few reasons. 1. A 2nd set of eyes. To make sure the pilot stays within numbers while doing the routine and for outside stuff. And for recruiting. To show there's more than just one person in the cockpit. They dont have to fly the plane, but can still go flying.
I'm an Aerospace Engineer ;) The visible part of the cone and other vapor that can be seen is just that - water vapor condensing in the low pressure regions of the airflow. They can be and are seen at high subsonic speeds (such as at an airshow, where the supersonic speeds are strictly forbidden with only a couple rare exceptions).
Click on this vid thinking it was going to be another loud music video, so glad you didn't add music to this and let us hear the roaring engines for a change.
The goal wasn't to film scenes of Chicago, it was to do his job and not crash. He was moving his head around to verify the entry parameters to each maneuver and make sure they were acceptable.
Breaking the sound barrier means that air pressure builds up in front of the aircraft so great that it is almost like a brick wall and in a sense cannot get out of it's own way fast enough. This is why high speed aircraft have swept wings as with a straight wing the vibrations would literally tear the aircraft to pieces.
Well first of all, this isn't from the Blue Angels. It's a single-ship demo team flying the Super Hornet. All of the single ship demo teams have a safety observer to monitor and double check airspeeds and altitudes during the demo. Most of the time the safety observer is another fighter pilot standing on the ground with a radio, but the Super Hornet demo teams utilize the WSO as the safety observer. It is also a chance to show the public a type of job in the Navy that is not often seen.
Ahhh, so THAT's what the trademark Hornet Howl sounds like from inside the cockpit. I always kind of wondered if it was the same inside as it was on the outside. Actually, it kind of reminds me of when I would have an empty bottle, and I would stick it out the window and get it to hum as I drive down the Interstate. Hang on tight to those bottles!
i agree i have been in a f18 before and it was the hardest thing not to move once you make a turn your definatly going to atleast jerk your head on accident becuase of you force so people who are saying stay still need to be taught i lesson in flying
the cones are called Oblique Waves in Aerodynamics and its not water vapor its low pressure building up between to high pressures, and the cones are seen after going super sonic.... The faster you go the smaller the angles of the oblique wave......
All of our hornet and super demos are flown by 106 and 122. And i see your point with the helmet, doesnt look like a helmet ive seen from either 106 or 122.
right around the 14:20 mark, what sports stadium was that that they passed over, know it definiatly wasn't Wrigley Field...LOL But what other sports team also has a open stadium in Chicago??????
No, he is performing his mission as the Weapons System Officer. These aircraft are so expensive to build, maintain and fly that every flight, even a demonstration such as this must be treated as a serious training mission. So the WSO wasn't just joyriding, he was actually practicing his skill set.
Nice video... Are you a civilian or an NFO (whoever is shooting the video that is)? I can't imagine how awesome that must have been. I was a/c and have racked up quite a few hours in the back of a 60, going 140 knots doing G+ turns and that is pretty good experience in itself, but doesn't even compare to being in an 18. Btw: worked on the A models when our squadron ditched the old A-7's, I've only seen the super hornet's from a distance. Thanks for Sharing!
Put me back to the FS-flying days although the MIGS strip was bulldozed during one night. I did use to fly between the skyscrapers all the time, but in real life this might have made the pilot unpopular.
Was this somewhere in august? Because I was approaching KORD and I saw a C-5 doing an airshow above the lake. And i think I got a video of it but gotta check my other pc. If I got it i'll upload it to YT. Nice flying bud.
To become a fighter pilot there are many medical requirements but all fighter pilots are officers and typically have graduated from Annapolis. Then you apply fir the flight program...typically 2 in every 100 applicants get accepted into the program...of those two, one will make it into a fighter. Very difficult to make it but not impossible given you meet medical requirements.
Be a navy flight officer. That was a navy NFO in the back which is normal. No way in hell they would let a civilian go up in one of those during an airshow.
2cool0 Ya I knew what you meant. Sometimes they will take people up, but it is rare. And for a show they wouldn't because they don't want to have to worry about the passenger blacking out and performing the routine at the same time lol. But ya this was the helmet cam from the NFO.
OK, here's the thing. Why THE HELL back in 90's TV shows and document. were showing only 3 second long cockpit shots?! There were practically no vids like that!
Antifaith29 There are no flight controls in the back seat of a mission configured F/A-18F or D. They can be reconfigured to be trainers with controls front and back, but then the WSO can't really do his job. So no controls in the back for a WSO.
Great, thanks for the info on that. I see here you posted that 4days ago, only came through on my email today. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time, Cheers.
I was viewer # 43000 !! I liked it, I favorited it, and I subscribed. So what did I win? Thank you, thank you, yes a ride in the backseat of that Super Hornet will be fabulous, thank you so much !!!
something ive always been curious about and you seem to be in the know - Can the wso fly the plane in an emergency? I keep hoping to catch a glimps of flight controlls but unfortunatly he never puts his head down far enough. I know they can do it in some other fighters like the F15, is it the same in the F18?
A Question to any pilots. I used to live near Gary,In where the chicago air show originates. What is called when people see the shadow of a white cloud as they pass? I know they are breaking the sound berrier. But what is it?
hello .... i watch all ur recent vids ... and i noticed that when u ride that u keep handling a part like stick somehow near to the mirror .. whats that for ?
wow brave never flown with out hand gloves and take watch off " what time was it when he bailed out". thanks for ride along view..ps my ears popped siting on chair.

I think that was the tranquil sound of 2 General Electric F404-GE-402 turbofans
This is BY FAR the coolest way to see the Windy City.
Probably the safest too
This is real ... And this is an awesome video. The military has clearance to fly close to the beach / buildings during airshows. This is each year in august in Chicago, weather permitting.
This is the way I love to see these videos - raw sound - and no music!

These are the BEST Air Show Views From a F/A-18F Hornet 🐝 With the Helmet Cam 🛩🛩👍
None of us got to ride, this is from a camera attached to the helmet of the Weapon Systems Officer in the back seat. This is his job!
Man, I would absolutely kill for a ride like this.
Wow these graphics are amazing
Hope you guys will be at the Indy airshow in 2 1/2 weeks! If not, will wait till 8/18/20102 Chicago

Incredible skill!!!
Almost sounds like a tractor wide open. Amazing video.
Great vid! Thanks for the ride!
the real tribute was near the end, fly by Meigs Field - Northerly Island
WHAT A VIDEO BRO
Have always liked the F/A-18 and would had loved to have a flight in one!
So Awesome 🦋
The back seat was a WSO. The F model has the WSO
i agree i have been in a f18 before and it was the hardest thing not to move once you make a turn your definatly going to atleast jerk your head on accident becuase of you force so people who are saying stay still need to be taught i lesson in flying

MY CITY LOOKS AWESOME.. Bucket list.. I wanna do something like this one day!
All of our hornet and super demos are flown by 106 and 122. And i see your point with the helmet, doesnt look like a helmet ive seen from either 106 or 122.
Man that would be my dream ride I would love to do that.
right around the 14:20 mark, what sports stadium was that that they passed over, know it definiatly wasn't Wrigley Field...LOL But what other sports team also has a open stadium in Chicago??????
Andrew Silva I believe Soldier Field (which is south-east of the loop).
Ahhh,. The Chicago Bears, totally slipped my mind....cant believe it.....
Andrew Silva Da bears, SUCK
Not this season they didnt.
Just chilling and doing some working again
Outrageous to see Meigs as a park with a walking track! How on earth did that happen!?
No, he is performing his mission as the Weapons System Officer. These aircraft are so expensive to build, maintain and fly that every flight, even a demonstration such as this must be treated as a serious training mission. So the WSO wasn't just joyriding, he was actually practicing his skill set.
All those boats are people watching the pilot fly around, so awesome... XD
best roller coaster ever!
So awesome. Love the videos. would love to ride
I don't know about the modern planes, but on older ones, they had to push the throttle handle all the way forward.
Very cool, seems like that pilot was pressing it too
always wanted to be a fighter pilot, could too other then i have asthma, great vid too
Actually, this is from VFA-106 "Gladiators"!
Nice video... Are you a civilian or an NFO (whoever is shooting the video that is)? I can't imagine how awesome that must have been. @AirshowStuffVideos Well put man and I would love to be in the back seat of the Hornet. I know that had to be quite an experience :D
Put me back to the FS-flying days although the MIGS strip was bulldozed during one night. I did use to fly between the skyscrapers all the time, but in real life this might have made the pilot unpopular.
The rear seat is higher up than the pilot seat, if that's why you're asking.
Not VFA-122 guys.
this is way better than six flags great adventure!!!!!
Was this somewhere in august? Because I was approaching KORD and I saw a C-5 doing an airshow above the lake. And i think I got a video of it but gotta check my other pc. If I got it i'll upload it to YT.
Nice flying bud.
It's not a ride along. F/A-18F has two crew: Pilot and WSO (Weapon System Officer), or "wizzo" :)
It kind of confuses me, and you're right VFA-11 hasn't flown a demo since they were VF-11 with the F-14B.
Good luck to you A1!
Reminds me of my old first copy of MS Flight Simulator. The default airport was Meigs.
what would it take tot get a ride on one of those during an air show?
Be a navy flight officer. That was a navy NFO in the back which is normal. No way in hell they would let a civilian go up in one of those during an airshow.
Zach Clemens haha damn. well i didn't me actually fly it, i just wanted to ride in it with the pilot actually flying it.
2cool0 Ya I knew what you meant. Sometimes they will take people up, but it is rare. And for a show they wouldn't because they don't want to have to worry about the passenger blacking out and performing the routine at the same time lol. But ya this was the helmet cam from the NFO.
Zach Clemens ohh ok. yeah would be awesome to go on there while they do everything. would be an amazing thing to experience.
2cool0 Ya hopefully I'll be flying those in 6 years lol. I'm trying for it.
OK, here's the thing. Why THE HELL back in 90's TV shows and document. were showing only 3 second long cockpit shots?! There were practically no vids like that!
Captain Dumpy Approves.
UNBELIEVABLY JEALOUS.
@Adelaide, this one has a WSO

Great, thanks for the info on that. I see here you posted that 4days ago, only came through on my email today. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time, Cheers.
im planning on enlisting to hopefully become a naval or air force pilot, the cold irony is, i hate heights....
what an awesome job.
Yes, there are dual controls.
I was viewer # 43000 !! I liked it, I favorited it, and I subscribed.
So what did I win? Thank you, thank you, yes a ride in the backseat of that Super Hornet will be fabulous, thank you so much !!!
Sorry, not breaking the sound berrier. Is it an interuption of air and speed?
Why is there No videos of F-14 airshow in Chicago !!?
Just out of curiosity, are fighter jets allowed to break the sound barrier far out over Lake Michigan?
something ive always been curious about and you seem to be in the know - Can the wso fly the plane in an emergency? I keep hoping to catch a glimps of flight controlls but unfortunatly he never puts his head down far enough. I know they can do it in some other fighters like the F15, is it the same in the F18?
wow, thats a lot of boats
wow amazing view my friend ! great upload
A Question to any pilots. I used to live near Gary,In where the chicago air show originates. What is called when people see the shadow of a white cloud as they pass? I know they are breaking the sound berrier. But what is it?
In verted..ps there is no Meigs ! What Happen shute got to go Midway or Ohare thanks Air Show for this video.
hello .... i watch all ur recent vids ... and i noticed that when u ride that u keep handling a part like stick somehow near to the mirror .. whats that for ?
I wish I could be on this seat!
how come you are allowed to show above so many yachts! And such a low altitude.
This video is from VFA-11 Red Rippers this is not the "Blue Angels"
The marks on the "triggs" helmet looks like VFA-11 could be wrong.
16:00 heading back to to Gary/Chicago airport
Commander Owens from The Final Countdown?
@Okwilliams Ever since the accident with the west coast team it seems the loaded roll was removed..
wow brave never flown with out hand gloves and take watch off " what time was it when he bailed out". thanks for ride along view..ps my ears popped siting on chair.
I Love Jets
NAB lifeguard crew baby!!!
lol touche its just that my teacher does not like saying water vapor lol I got to Embry-Riddle :) where do u work out of?
Stalling like a pro.
i would love to get a ride like that:)
