Yeah but then he won't look pretty and we all know that's more important than his health, right? I mean what if someone, heaven forbid, mistakes him for the wrong breed?!

@@BlackBackLioness yes I agree. It's not about how your pet looks, having pet is a serious responsibility. Most dog owners in particular forget that in worrying about the aesthetics. This is why we have so many breeds which are a combination , thus building in health issues depending on the combination.
You are so right, well said.

Paralysis ticks, especially the ones I've encountered, are often unphased by regular tick prevention medication. My childhood dogs were always up to date with their tick prevention and both dealt with paralysis ticks; one of them got a paralysis tick three times within four years. Luckily they were at least a year apart each time so we could use the antidote. We put a stop to it but keeping them out of bushy/weedy areas during summer.

I was just wondering why, after the first tick, the owners wouldn't have started tick preventative.
If it's not too effective, it's very possible that they had.
I'm glad this pup is better, and that yours were able to get care in time too.

I was going to ask if regular tick prevention does or does not work in these cases. I mean, any tick prevention is never 100% but these nasty buggers seem to break through notoriously.

AlienWithABox. I really hate paralysis ticks. I have had one dog die after a week in the vets surgery. And I’ve had another two dogs that luckily were saved. The last one had the tick inside her mouth. I have all my dogs on Nexgard. What are your thoughts on that preventative? 🙏🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕

What an absolutely frightening experience for everyone, especially Danny. My dog has short hair and I'm in the States. Checking for ticks on her isn't very difficult. I wish there were a way for Danny's sweet owners to easily check for ticks in all that fur. Even the vet tech had to shave him close to the skin, but I guess that was an emergency measure.

@Esau Davis By that definition atleast 7.5 billion people cant have pets. You are being out of line with reality. Thing is in nature these animals would just have died, its not nice but thats reality for you. So where is the difference if they would die while in human possession?
Its a luxury to be able to save them, not a necessity.
And as an addon, healthcare for *humans* in the US is a luxury, you cant expect people to apply higher standards of living for their pets compared to the general population.
And thats a first world country, most countries have it far worse than that.

Paralysis ticks are barely phased by tick prevention medication. As of right now the only surefire prevention is keeping an eye on your dog's fur and staying away from tall grass.

everyone who reads this comment I am just about to tell u what my Chihuahua had gone through while he was with us…
btw he was not as harmed as u think
    so firstly..
Cooper was his name,so when we got him he had a broken-ish back he was struggling to get off and on my mothers bed so one time when we came back from the shops we forgot we had him so my sister accidentally stepped on the right spot where it was hurting him and he had a fixed back after that accident happened😅
    Secondly
So one time he was he was not standing up properly, then a friend gave over and was patting him then felt a lump she said “hmm t-that’s a TICK!” Mum was shocked then we gave him a bath then we took the tick out PERFECTLY! 😮
    Thirdly
So my mother couldn’t take care of him any longer ( bc he peed EVERYWHERE) so we gave him to a new owner then she found out that he had 27 rotten teeth (we got cooper from a family member keep that in mind)!
so that was all the traumatising times of coopers life…😅

    • @AlienWithABox

They're in a coastal ares with a lot of trees. Because Australia is pretty good about maintaining our natural ecosystems, we end up with a lot of bugs. Majority are harmless, paralysis ticks not so much.
The owners simply need to check Danny's fur regularly and keep him out of bushes and tall weedy grass.

@@AlienWithABox Thank you for explaning that to me! I live in the Pacific Northwest USA. We get spider's! Hobo, brown recluse, black widows and now murder wasps. A year ago I was bitten by a spider. The fangs were more than a quarter inch apart. It was nasty and painful! We have ticks too. But never heard of the paralysis tick. Though we probably have those too. Thanks again!

Do anti-tick topical or orals kill this type of tick? If yes, maybe these owners should invest in one of these medicines especially since poor Danny has had these very dangerous disease.

Those ticks aren't bothered by tick collars and drops. They are relentless and the only thing you can really do is keep them away from tall grasses and woody areas. Bugs in Australia are something else
